1. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY AND THE DEPARTMENT

The Fakir Mohan University,

Balasore was established by the

Government of Odisha, under Section 32 of the Orissa Universities Act, 1989

and it was notified vide the Government's Notification No. 973 dated 3rd July,

1999. The University was also been duly recognized by the UGC under

section 2(f) of the UGC Act by the Notification No. F-9-1 / 2000 (CPP-I), dated

11th February 2000 as well as under section 12(B), vide UGC letter No. F.9-

1 /2000 (CPP-I) dated 23rd December, 2005. It has also been accredited by

the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), vide their letter No.108693,

Dated 22nd August, 2000.

The Department of Business Management is one among the 7 academic

departments of the Fakir Mohan University. The Department, which came

into existence with the inception of the Post Graduate Course in

Management in 2004, is an amalgamation of competent teachers, state of

art infrastructure, pollution free environment and an experienced and

efficient administration. It has been imparting teaching in Business

Administration, leading to MBA degree and sincerely attempts to prepare

professionals in management and information technology for corporate and

non-corporate sectors including Government and developmental institutions;

while establishing an international network for education, training, research

and development and consultancy in management and information resource

management field. The Department has five dedicated full time faculty

members having specializations in Accounting and Finance, HR and

Marketing.

The Department has full-time faculty in core management disciplines

and functional areas of management. Besides the regular curriculum, the

students are also involved in co-curricular activities like inter-business school

competitions and have constant interaction with the industry, thus

strengthening their practical orientation and developing into future business

managers.

2.2 The Mission

To provide the best possible learning and development environment in order

to produce world class principled, competent and socially sensitive business

leaders

To achieve the Vision and Mission, the Department:

a) Organizes lectures on core courses and electives, workshops,

seminars, interactive sessions and study tour.

b) Provide project work, communication skills, summer internships and

other relevant inputs to students.

c) Faculties undertake research projects and consultancy works.

d) Faculty members provide guidance to Ph.D. Scholars

e) Updates course curriculum on a continuous and regular basis.

f) Will collaborate with NOCCI to strengthen University-Industry

Interaction

3.0 PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY THE DEPARTMENT

The Department offers following programmes:

Ph. D. in Business Management and Commerce

MBA and Executive MBA Programmes with specialization in

Finance, HR and Marketing

M. Com. Programme with specialization in Finance and Accounting

Research and Consultancy

3.1 Ph. D. in Business Management and Commerce

The Department offers Ph. D. in Business Management and Commerce both

in Full-time and Part-Time basis. A candidate who has qualified for the award

of the Master's Degree of Fakir Mohan University or of any other University

recognised by the University Grants Commission with not less than 50%

marks or an equivalent grade; and he/she should have qualified in the

entrance test conducted by University or should have passed M.Phil./UGC-

JRF/NET/CSIR/ICSSR or other fellowship/ related examinations.

3.2 MBA Programme

The MBA degree offered by the Department is a two year programme which

aims to equip the students with the basic knowledge in all areas of

Management and indepth knowledge in a chosen area of specialization. The

admission into this programme is through OJEE and Vacant seats, if any, is

filled up from the Orissa JEE qualified candidates of the concerned year only.

The first two semesters focus on giving a good foundation in the areas of

Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Systems. Apart from core

specialization subjects, students are also taught general management

subjects like Statistics, Operations Research and Operations Management. 

The introduction of Business Communication aims at improving the oral as

well as written presentation skills of the students.

In the last two semesters students are taught general management subjects

like; Strategic Management in addition to specializations in Finance, HR and

marketing, which help them to perform well in the middle level

management.

3.3 Executive MBA Programme

It is the first and most trusted programme under self-financing mode of the

University designed specifically for working professionals of Northern Odisha

and outside. It adds a formal MBA degree to professional experience of local

executives.

For more than 7 years, the EMBA has helped managers and senior

executives become leaders in their field. The program is specifically

designed for mid-career managers, executives, and professionals who wish

to pursue a graduate level business degree without disrupting their career.

The EMBA is a 3-year intensive study program that provides candidates with

a solid foundation in all core business disciplines and the skills necessary to

take on leadership roles to accelerate their careers and enrich their lives.

3.4 M. COM. Programme

Fakir Mohan University is pleased to announce an innovative post-graduate

programme in Commerce offered by the Department of Business

Management from the current academic session. The objective of the

programme is to develop teaching and research talent to create academic

expertise suiting to contemporary needs of the society. There is a need to

transform teaching as a profession more than a mere career to bring in the

right skills, capability and attitude in the field of academics in the larger

interest of sustainable education. The program aims to create faculty of

quality and competence in the subject areas of Commerce and Management.

The M.Com program of this University is of 24 months’ duration (4

Semesters) with significant emphasis on Research. The program is career

oriented in its design, course structure and teaching-learning process, as

compared to traditional M.Com. The program includes value-adding modules

on teaching methodology and student behaviour, in addition to descriptive

research oriented study modules on various subjects of Commerce &

Management, with options for specialization. The curriculum is developed

duly considering the desired level of knowledge exposure in the context of

ever changing environment in global business. Research paper on a chosen

functional area based on industry/ organizational interaction/ internship, is

included to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

The sanctioned faculty strength of the department is six. At present, there

are five faculty members (two professors, one reader and two lecturers).One

The department has a sanctioned strength of 40 in MBA programme, the

admission into which is made through Odisha JEE only. The students

admitted into the programme are from different streams. The profile of the

students admitted in different years from the inception of the Department is

6.0 INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES PROVIDED

6.1 Wi- Fi Connectivity: A stable

and high speed connectivity (2

MBPS leased line) to the internet

ensures speedy access and campus

is completely connected with Wi-Fi

network.

6.2 Class Room Complex: The

class room is equipped with LCD

Projectors, audio-video equipments,

internet facilities and laptop power supply.

6.3 Hostel for both Men and Women: The University has one men’s

hostel and one women’s hostel at

New Campus for the students. Each

hostel is under the supervision of a

Superintendent, who is responsible

for the administration and

discipline of the hostel.

6.4 Library: There is huge

library inside the campus which

has over thousands of books in

various disciplines such as arts, commerce, Management, science, IT,

mathematics, philosophy, psychology, economics, English. Apart from books,

the collections also includes working papers, audiovisual resources, annual

report of corporate houses, CDs, case studies, training manuals and bound

volumes of periodicals. Apart from that Department of Business Management

has its own seminar library.

6.5 Industry-Department

Interaction Cell: The department is

having a cell to promote better

interaction with the industries. For this

purpose the cell is headed by a senior

faculty member. Besides, the cell

inducts some industry personnel as its

member. Recently, the University has

signed an MOU with NOCI, Balasore

which will further strengthen the

linkage between industry and the Department. The activities of the cell is to

promote research, consultancy and project work. Frequent participation of

the industry personnel as speakers helps us to increase the practical

approach of the subjects.

6.6 Sport Facilities: University provides facilities for all indoor games such

as table tennis, badminton, basket ball,

foot ball, snooker, chess, etc. The

University has a vast playground too.

6.7 Medical Facilities: The University

provides free medical consultancy at its

Health Centre, medical checkups to all

its students and night time Ambulance

service to Borders at a very nominal

price.

6.8 Vehicle Shed: The University has constructed the Vehicle shed to

provide protection to the 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers of the employees and

students of the University.

6.9 Banking Facilities: The students, teachers and employees of the

University avail core banking facility from UCO Bank at New campus and

other Nationalized Banks at Balasore. Needy students avail study loan from

the nationalized banks on the recommendation of the University. The ATM

facility also exists in the new campus at Nuapadhi.

6.10 Central Computing Facilities: Besides the Department’s own

Computer Laboratory, there is a

Central Computing facility located in

the Department of Information and

Communication Technology. As a

State-of-the-Art level facility, 100 Nos.

of Pentium PC, 2 Nos. of high-end

Servers, Scanner, Digital Camera,

Printers and a number of application

software have been installed for the

benefit of the students, teachers, and research scholars of the University, in

addition to high speed internet connectivity. Looking at the present scenario,

software/ packages like JAVA, ORACLE, VISUAL Basic, NET, etc. have been

kept open for the benefit of the students. Facilities also exist for using

various languages such as C, java, C++, HTML, and FORTRAN-90/95 in

various operating environment like WINDOWS-98, 2000, XP, NT Red Hat,

LINUX.

6.11Health Insurance: The University

has an insurance scheme for the

students known as Janata Personal

Accident (JDA) offered by National

Insurance Company Ltd. All the students

admitted into 1st Semester are brought under the insurance coverage. The

insurance coverage is valid for 2 years (Four Semester).

6.12 The University Canteen: The University has two canteens, one at old

campus and other at new campus being managed by private party. The

University has provided the necessary infrastructure required for the

Canteen. The Canteens are supervised by a committee. This committee

takes care of the standard of food, cost of the food items and general

cleanliness of the surroundings.

7.0 COURSE CURRICULUM AND EXAMINATION PATTERN

The course curriculum is always restructured in every two/three years for

updating the course or adding new subjects. The duration of MBA course

consist of two academic years spread over four semesters. In each semester

there is an internal assessment of 20 marks for each theory paper of 100

marks and rest 80 marks for semester examination. Papers like have

practical component. Besides, the curriculum gives scope for evaluating

students on their performance in seminar, summer project and dissertation &

viva-voce.

8.0 ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department provides students with the best management education in

an environment that stimulates intellectual growth. Realising that future

management professionals sometimes need a break from the rigorous

schedule to relax and engage in pursuits of their choice, we give them ample

opportunities to enjoy themselves and at the same time expand their

horizons; all within the campus.

8.1 ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

These are supplement to their classroom learning where they participate in

variety of activities.

Seminars on a range of subjects relevant to the business world are

conducted. Speakers from the

corporate as well as the academia

share their knowledge and insights

with the students.

Workshops are organized with the help of faculty members that

enable the students to learn how apply their theoretical knowledge in

real world situations.

Debates & Group Discussions are a vital part of the students’ day

to day routine. These help in keeping the students stay abreast of

current events and at the same time enhance their group behavior.

Corporate Communication Sessions give the participants an

opportunity for enhancing their communication skills.

8.2 EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Student Clubs in the form of finance club, marketing, HR club, etc

allow the students to interact with and

organize periodic events with like-

minded individuals.

9.0 PLACEMENT

The University has an integrated Training & Placement Cell headed by a

Senior Faculty as its director. It offers final placements to the students. To

supplement the placement cell the Department publishes Placement

Bulletin every year. The department also provides facilities for Summer

Training to its students as a part of curriculum. The students participated in

RELIANCE, VEDANTA etc in

2009.In 2012 the Company like

paper Mills Conducted Campus Recruitment and have selected few

students. Besides, few students have been able to get into different banks

like HSBC, ICICI, Axis Bank, SBI, Bank of India etc by qualifying the selection

test conducted by respective banks. Some students also have been placed

in state government and central government organizations. Few students

have also chosen academics as their career and working as faculty

members in AICTE approved institutes. Many students having marketing as

the specialization is well placed in private, multinational and other reputed

companies and doing well in the marketing field. The department always

endeavors in creating a supportive environment for the students to capture

the market trends and prepare themselves accordingly.

The students have participated in Summer Placements and working in

following companies: SAIL, RSP, Coca Cola, LG, Intex, Emami Paper, ICFAI,

SBI, Nesco, ORIMPEX ORIFinance, Philips India, ICICI Bank, JK Paper, OCL,

Sterlite, ORIPLAST, OMFED, Bajaj Home Appliance, Hero Honda, Kinetic

Group, HDFC Bank, Balasore Alloys, AXIS Bank, LIC, and others.

9.2 Department Publications

The department publishes a bi-annual news letter AAKANKSHYA which

highlights the department achievements, business articles contributed

by the students and the achievement of faculties.

In addition, the department plans to publish a Research Journal from

the current academic session by inviting research articles from

scholars in the areas of business and management.

9.3 Faculty Achievements

The faculties have published 189 research papers in different referred

journals, other journals of repute, conference proceedings and book

chapters. They have also published 27 books and successfully completed 8

research/consultancy projects. A total of 27 scholars have been awarded the

Ph.D degree in commerce/Management under the supervision of the

departmental faculties. Further 8 research scholars have submitted or going

to submit their thesis and 19 are still working at present in the Department

for award of P hD . A brief profile of achievement of the faculties is presented

10. PLAN OF ACTION FOR NEXT FIVE YEARS

1. To achieve the AICTE Approval for regular MBA Programme.

2. To start research centre for offering Ph.D programme with a foreign

University

3. To organize MDPs in different functional areas viz. Marketing,

Finance, HR, Entrepreneurship, etc

4. To tie up with national and international bodies like AMDISA, AIMS,

AIMA, ISTD etc. for conducting training, research and providing

consultancy service.

5. To undertake socially relevant development projects

6. The department plans to publish a research journal to encourage

researcher to share their thoughts and ideas.
