Meet the Psychology TeamDr Julie AllenAssociate Principal LecturerJulie has a PhD in the nature and effects of belief bias in reasoning from the University of Plymouth. Her research interests focus on bias in thinking and decision making, critical thinking, and students’ academic skills.

Bruce Rainford Head of PsychologyBruce began his working life as an Occupational Psychologist within Disability Services at the Department for Work and Pensions. He has been a co-editor of the Journal of Occupational Psychology, Employment and Disability since 2000.

Dr Julian PeraraAssociate Principal LecturerJulian has enjoyed a varied career in Psychology; working with the Ergonomics Research Group at Hull University, for Pat Lindley and Dave Bartram at their Occupational Psychology consultancy in Hull, and on various international research projects in the field of children’s drawings.Portugal.

John PerrySenior Lecturer, Sport & Exercise PsychologyJohn is a BPS Chartered Psychologist and a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist with an academic background in sport and exercise psychology. He has particular expertise in mental toughness, sportspersonship, coping, and psychometrics. John has published and presented his work on these topics internationally.

Dr Paul SmithAssociate Principal LecturerPaul is programme manager for the BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology Degree and lectures in Forensic and Abnormal Psychology. He has published extensively on cognitive bias in offenders, gender and aggression, impulsivity and anger.

Danielle McDermottLecturer in Forensic PsychologyPrior to lecturing at Leeds Trinity University, Danielle had 7 years’ experience working in the Psychology Department of one of the busiest local prisons in the country which houses male prisoners aged 21 and above. Danielle has also delivered training to Prison Service staff on topics such as Motivational Interviewing and Pro-Social Modelling.

Psychology remains a popular degree choice, not only because of its inherent interest and applied nature, but because employers recognise that psychology graduates possess a useful combination of transferable skills. We understand the need for graduates to be able to transfer theory to practice. The two professional work placements offer students the opportunity to do just that, in a real work setting. This, and our carefully designed British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited curriculum, contribute to the successful employment of our students upon graduation.

RegistrationOnce you have booked your place, you will receive a confirmation letter which also contains your registration slip. Simply hand over this slip at the registration desk when you arrive.

1.45pm - 2.15pmCoffee BreakGrab a coffee and have a chat with our psychology staff and students.

PsychologyWorking with specialists and students from the Department, you will be working in teams to complete a problem solving task.

Who will do what and why? How do psychologists explain this and apply these theories in the “real world”?

Forensic PsychologyWe will discuss the widespread breakdown in public order that occurred across the UK in 2011. We will also consider the psychology of policing riots effectively, and whether psychology can prevent such widespread lawlessness in the future or are we limited in our contribution to “picking up the pieces” afterwards?

Student Life TalkFind out what it is really like to study at Leeds Trinity University from our Student Ambassadors – perfect for any prospective student! The talk lasts approximately 30 minutes and includes a welcome from our Executive.

10.00am - 4.00pmMain Reception

INFO HubThe INFO hub will be open throughout the day where you will get the chance to find out about Finance, Accommodation, Student Support and the Students’ Union. If you wish to speak to a representative from any of these areas, they will be available from10.00am until1.00pm.

2.30pm - 4.00pmMain Reception

Campus ToursTake a tour with one of our Student Ambassadors to get a feel for our campus, including our halls of residence, the Andrew Kean Learning Centre, the Media Centre and our sports facilities. Tours last approximately 45 minutes to an hour, and will depart from the Main Reception on a regular basis.

ParkingFree parking is available on campus for the Applicant Day. Upon arrival, please look out for our Student Ambassadors who will guide you to an available space. For more information about getting to Leeds Trinity University, please see the back page of this guide.

Food and DrinkThe Dining Room and Lounge provide a wide range of hot meals, drinks and snacks, freshly prepared on campus using local produce where possible. They are your main hubs for refuelling on campus, and will be open from 9am until 4pm on the Applicant Day.

GuestsYou are more than welcome to bring your friends and family to the Applicant Day. If you do, please note that some of the academic workshops are for prospective students only. For any workshops where this is the case, it is indicated on the programme for the day, along with a suggested activity for guests accompanying applicants.

Key Dates for your diary

7 May 2014You will need to reply to all offers made by Leeds Trinity University by 7 May 2014.

31 May 2014You will need to apply for Student Finance by 31 May 2014 in order to receive your finance before you start university in September.

14 August 2014If you are studying this year you will receive your exam results on 14 August. Good luck!

22 September 2014Time to celebrate becoming a student at Leeds Trinity University - ‘Freshers’ Week’ begins!

What happens next?Making your decisionWhen you have received offers from all universities, UCAS will send you an email to say there’s been an update. You will then need to go through UCAS Track to make your replies. You’ll have a deadline shown in Track of when to do this by – how much time you have depends on the time of year, varying from a week to five weeks.

Replying to an offerFirm acceptance -This is your first choice. If it’s an unconditional offer, the place is yours! If it’s conditional, the place is yours if you meet the entry requirements. So just in case you don’t, you can pick a second offer as a backup – your insurance acceptance.

Insurance acceptance -The backup choice to a conditional firm acceptance.If you’re choosing an insurance choice, go for a course with lower entry requirements,

but make sure it’s somewhere you’d still like to study. Remember, you will only attend your insurance choice course if you don’t meet the requirements of your firm choice, but you do meet the conditions of your insurance.

You can’t choose between your firm and insurance course when you get your results, so make sure you’re happy with your firm and insurance choice by doing as much research into the course and institution as you can.

DeclineYou will then need to decline all other offers. Or if you decide you don’t want to accept any of the offers, you can decline them all and you may be eligible to use the UCAS Extra service. In Extra, you can apply for any course with vacancies and hopefully secure an offer before the summer.

Free Leeds Trinity Shuttle BusThe Leeds Trinity University free shuttle bus will be operating between Horsforth Train Station and our campus every 30 minutes throughout the Applicant Day, from Horsforth Train Station.

By busThere are frequent bus services between Leeds city centre and Horsforth. West Yorkshire bus routes 97 and 731 travel from Leeds Central Bus Station and both stop outside Leeds Trinity University. How to find usLeeds Trinity University has great transport links – it’s easily accessible by road, there’s a railway station ten minutes’ walk from campus and plenty of buses from and to Leeds stop directly outside the main entrance.
