Dear parents and friends,
Welcome back to everyone for a new term. Everyone appears to have returned
refreshed and rested after the two week’s holiday. We look forward to another busy
term ahead, with a great many activities already listed on the school’s calendar. The
winter weather has certainly made itself felt this week, with a mixture of rain, wind,
sun, rain, cloud, rain, rain and wind.
All at Cavendish Primary School
welcome our new students, Nate and
Noah. Both boys have been made feel
welcome by the children and they have
soon adapted to their new environment.
Ms Ferrier reports they are working hard
in their lessons and getting along with
their new classmates. So far I can see
that Nate is a champion footballer and
Noah has taken an instant liking to the
down ball games.
On Wednesday the whole school benefitted form the special workshops with marimba
maestro, Jon Madin. This event was organised by Leeanne Barber and provided our
young musicians with the opportunity to develop new skills in their percussion work as
well as learning new repertoire. Jon has been a leading advocate of marimbas for
many years and introduced the instrument into schools following his workshops over
the past twenty years. He brought a wide range of equipment with him for the children
to explore during his visit. Our students are certainly fortunate to have the
opportunities such as this to enhance their regular, classroom music lessons.
We have appreciated the response from families this week when children have been
absent. The school has received written notes, phone calls, texts, messages left on
the answering machine and verbal contact to explain student absences on the day of
the absence. As explained in newsletters last term, new DET rules require our school
to make contact with families on the day of an absence to ensure student safety.
Having families contact the school on the day of a child’s absence avoids unnecessary
office work and is most appreciated. Please develop the habit of ringing/texting the
school on the morning of an absence to let us know.
An envelope will be sent home to all families today with information on the annual
parent opinion survey. This is an on-line survey completed in all government schools
and is used to provide useful information for future planning. I encourage all families
to read the information and to take the time and complete the survey—it should take
about fifteen minutes.

Next Thursday is the Year 3/4 Hoop Time basketball tournament at HILAC
and will be followed on the next Monday by the Year 5/6 event. Not all the
notes and $5 fees have been returned yet so unfortunately travelling infor-
mation won’t be available until next week. Please have the notes returned
on Monday so final details can be arranged.
The Hamilton Cinema has contacted the Parents’ Club explaining that the
original booking for Mamma Mia 2 is no longer available owing to a distri-
bution problem. However the fund-raising film night will still take place,
with a new date of FRIDAY, 10th August. Please buy your tickets now for
this event from the school office. All profits will go towards the school’s
camp costs for this year—this will mean a reduction in the cost per child.
We would like all children to be able to attend our term 4 camps. The costs
of camps are increasing but they are a wonderful opportunity for the chil-
dren to participate in all sorts of social and educational experiences. It can
be a challenge for families with several children but we have maintained
high participation rates over recent years. We continue to be wonderfully
supported by our Parents’ Club and School Council, who have offered to
pay for bus costs. Some children have been active in cutting firewood and
baking to raise their own money to contribute towards their camp costs.
The final costs for our camps will be released shortly.
Don’t forget to have next Friday's 6pm farewell barbecue at school for Ker-
rie Jones marked in your diaries. The Parents’ Club will provide bread,
meat, plates and cutlery. Guests will need to bring their own drinks and a
salad to share. Kerrie has given our school wonderful service over many
years and this is our chance to celebrate her time at CPS. Please let Tam-
my or myself know if you are attending to assist us with ordering supplies.
Don’t forget there is no school for all students on Monday, 6th August. This
is the first day of Sheepvention. The staff will be having a professional de-
velopment day at school on ClearTrack data entry and coding.
The new date for the school photos is Friday, 10th August. Notes about the
photo packages will be sent home today. If you are looking at getting fami-
ly photos taken, you can collect an order envelope from the front counter
outside the office.
The Parents’ Club will be running a kids movie night at the Hall on Friday,
3rd August. The movie will start at 7pm in the Supper Room.
We received a letter informing us that the Dunkeld and District Community
bank have granted us a $600 donation towards the cost of a new iPad. As
we now have wonderful coding equipment some of our older model iPads
aren’t able to be used for controlling our Spheros and Dashes. This gener-
ous donation from the bank is most appreciated.
We held our first Buddies session for a while this afternoon. The project
was a problem-solving construction activity using blocks, icy-pole sticks,
etc. there will be photos in next week’s newsletter to show how we got on!
Have a great weekend (and stay warm),
Anthony Hill

Following our recent world cup soccer tournament at school, there
is quite a lot of interest among the children in playing the game.
The MiniRoos sessions are a great way for young players to develop
their skills. It is equivalent to the AFL’s Auskick program. The first
of the nine sessions is tomorrow, so contacting the club immediate-
ly through their website would be required.
The Soccer Mums program is running alongside the MiniRoos and
might be of interest to some families. Mum can learn the skills of
the game while the children are at their sessions.

Citizenship Survey Each term the children in Years 2 to 6 complete a Citizen-ship Survey. This provides the opportunity for them to rec-ord the positive and negative behaviours they have ob-served in our school. The survey is confidential and allows the true thoughts of the students to be heard. Last term there were 75 positive comments and only 12 negative. Most children will be given a one-on-one interview to discuss the positive comments their schoolmates have said about them. I have removed names to protect confidentiality but the comments are very encouraging about the behaviours on show in our school.
XXX plays fair and is an honest person in games.
XXX helped me when I get stuck in class. XXX has a positive attitude in the play-
ground and in class. XXX is a great friend—always there for
me when I need her. Kind, caring, polite and shows great sportsmanship.
XXX always respects others. XXX is always happy and greets me with
a smile. XXX is happy and joyful.

XXX always uses good manners. XXX supports and helps our younger
students around the school yard. XXX shares her pencils with me. I like it when he helps me when something is
hard. XXX works hard on her projects. XXX helps me spell tricky words. XXX is always happy and invites others to
play. XXX holds the doors open to let others
through. XXX is honest when she is out in games. XXX lets others play when they don’t have
anything to do. XXX helped a Prep when they were lost. XXX gives others a turn in soccer. XXX is always organised. XXX bounces back fast when upset. XXX always includes others and is happy to
help.

ADVISING SCHOOL OF ABSENT STUDENTS
Please remember that from the be-
ginning of this term it is a require-
ment that the school contacts fam-
ilies on the day of an absence if we
haven’t been informed of the ab-
sence. The easiest way to over-
come unnecessary administration
time for our school is for families to
send through a phone call or a text
on the morning of a child’s ab-
sence. A message left on the an-
swering machine is quite accepta-
ble on the days when Tammy isn’t
in the office.
