Dear parents and friends, Thank you to all the families who attended the information evening on Monday. This provided the class teachers with an opportunity to briefly outline the operations of their classrooms and what families can do at home to support the children’s learning. These sessions were general in nature but parents are always welcome to contact the class teacher for more specific information on their child. There will be formal parent/guardian/teacher/student interviews in term 2, when the individual child’s achievements will be covered in more detail. One of the key messages on the night was the importance of home reading to reinforce the learning in the classrooms. An extra five or ten minutes additional reading each day adds up to thousands of additional words for the younger children, and millions of extra words for the older students. I have added a poster showing the difference those extra few minutes each night have on reading volume across a year for a Year 5 child. Today all children will take home a copy of the Cavendish PS ICT Acceptable Users Agreement. This is a document explaining the expectations of students when using computers or iPads at school. In an age when the safe and appropriate use of technology is constantly in the news (and currently being discussed in parliament), it is vital we keep everyone aware of the expectations for correct use of all technology at school. This document is an important teaching tool, as it allows teachers and families to discuss appropriate and safe use of technology during lessons and makes the children aware of how they need to be safe online. We ask all students from Year 2 to 6 to sign this document and return it to school after discussion with families. The Prep and Year 1 students doesn't need to sign however a copy will still be sent home as a reminder for parents to discuss the use of technology when timely and in appropriate language for the age of the children concerned. A reminder to the Year 6 children that their Baimbridge College transition note is due back to school as soon as possible. Year 5/6 students have until 3.30pm next Thursday to return their expressions of interest for this year’s Somers camp. I am required to enter our student numbers by this time and no exceptions can be made. The first junior council meeting was held today. Our junior council is an

important body in our school and provides the children with the op-portunity to discuss ways to improve the school and make suggestions on fund-raising ideas. Next Wednesday is the first school council meeting for this year. This is the final meeting prior to the for-mation of the new council in readi-ness for the March annual general meeting. Four current councillors are coming to the end of their two-year term. Information about nomi-nations and council elections will be sent home to families following next week’s council meeting. It is only two weeks until our annual
picnic sports. We shall include the proposed program in next week’s newsletter. Make sure you set aside the date (Friday, 1st March) and come along and barrack hard for Glenelg or Wannon
House. The picnic sports is a fun, semi-competitive day of activities. It is our school’s traditional lead-up event to more formal athletics. Later in March, our whole school competes in the Southern Grampians Small Schools Association athletics carnival. This takes place at Pedrina Park, and is against the other smaller schools in the district. The children compete in shot put, discus, sprints, relays, hurdles, etc. We shall com-mence our formal
athletics training next week. A reminder that if your family holds a Health Care Card to speak to Tammy in the office in relation to claiming the Camps, Sports & Ex-cursion Funding. Have a great weekend, Anthony Hill

Yum, yum! On Wednesday we made chocolate rainbow space
balls. We followed the recipe to make the chocolate
rainbow space balls. The ingredients were melted
butter, warm water, cocoa, crushed biscuits and
sprinkles. We mixed them all together and put them
in the fridge to set. Our fingers were very sticky at
the end. We cleaned up and did the dishes too. We
made enough for the whole school and they were de-
licious!

Bushfire At-Risk Register - Schools
School procedures for the bushfire season
Fire danger ratings and warnings are used in Victoria to provide clear direction on the safest options for preserving life.
Schools and children’s services listed on the DET Bushfire At-Risk Register (BARR) will be closed when a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined in their Bureau of Meteorology district. Our school has been identified as being one of those at high bushfire risk and is listed on the BARR.
Where possible, we will provide parents with up to four days notice of a potential Code Red day closure by letter and/or SMS message. A Code Red day will be deter-mined by the Emergency Management Commissioner no later than 1.00 pm the day before the potential closure. Once we are advised of the confirmation of the Code Red day we will provide you with advice before the end of the school day.
Once confirmed, the decision to close will not change, regardless of im-provements in the weather forecast. This is to avoid confusion and help your family plan alternative care arrangements for your child. It is also important to note that:
No staff will be on site on days where the school is closed due to a forecast Code Red day.
Cavendish Primary School– A Rural Tradition of Excellence 27
School camps will be cancelled if a Code Red fire danger rating day is determined for the Bureau of Meteorology district in which the camp is located.
As a bus co-ordinating school all bus routes will be cancelled.
On these Code Red days, families are encouraged to enact their Bushfire Survival Plan – on such days children should never be left at home or in the care of old-er children.
For those of us living in a bushfire prone area, the CFA advise that when Code Red days are forecast, the safest option is to leave the night before or early on the morning of the Code Red day.
As part of preparing our school for potential hazards such as fire, we have updated and completed our Emergency Management Plan.
What can parents do?
Make sure your family’s bushfire survival plan is up-to-date and includes alterna-tive care arrangements in the event that our school is closed.
Ensure we have your current contact details, including your mobile phone num-bers. Keep in touch with us by reading our newsletters, by checking our website http://cavendishps.vic.edu.au/ and by talking to your child’s teacher or any other member of the teaching staff about our emergency management plan. Immediate con-tact can be made through the school’s phone number prior to any Code Red Day on (03) 55742282 or directly to the principal’s mobile on 0402526258.
Most importantly at this time of year, if you’re planning a holiday or short stay in the bush or in a coastal area, you should check warnings in advance of travel and remain vigilant during your stay.
If your child is old enough, talk to them about bushfires and your family’s bushfire survival plan.
You can access more information about children’s services closures on the Depart-ment of Education and Training website – see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/health/pages/closures.aspx
