Tracking Growing Student Achievement at DHS By Kevin Chederquist, MTSS PLC Core Interventionist Increasing student achievement is at the core of what we are about at Denfeld High School! We are about student achievement at Denfeld High School! Research shows that students who find academic success in high school are more likely to be successful in life, therefore we have developed an intervention program that monitors our 10th, 11th and 12th grade stu- dents. The Minnesota Early Indicator and Response System (MEIRS) oversees all students then identifies those who are showing signs of struggling, matches them with proactive interventions and monitors their aca- demic progress. This system is similar to the Build Assets, Reduce Risks (BARR) program for 9th grade stu- dents that was first implemented last year. MEIRS has a team of DHS teachers who determine, discuss and address students needs at regularly scheduled MEIRS meetings. The teams of teachers look at the attendance, behavior and coursework progress of a group of students en- trusted to them to look after for the academic year. It is hoped that the teams of teachers would have access to the students through their regularly scheduled classes, before or after school, or during the WIN time each day. Each core curriculum department (Math, English, Science, or Social Studies) has reserved a WIN period each week for servicing the students who have been assigned to an intervention. Students who are missing over 10% of their classes, have behavioral referrals, or have current progress “Fs” are recognized as struggling to- ward adequate academic progress. “The MEIRS program is an important part of the Multiple Tiered Support System (MTSS) that encourages students to improve their achievement in school,“ states Tonya Sconiers, Denfeld Principal. “Providing Tier II interventions is another form of academic insurance that provide all our students the chance for higher achievement.” Students receive an invitation for additional attention to their issue beyond what happens in the classroom and the MEIRS team monitors the students’ response to the intervention until progress is evidenced. If progress is not made then the student is referred to Tier III interventions which is handled by the Student Success Team (SST). This Tier II level of care and concern for Denfeld students is expected to make a differ- ence in the graduation rates for all students. Tracking Growing Student Achievement at DHS By Kevin Chederquist, MTSS PLC Core Interventionist

Increasing student achievement is at the core of what we are about at Denfeld High School! We are about

student achievement at Denfeld High School!

Research shows that students who find academic success in high school are more likely to be successful in

life, therefore we have developed an intervention program that monitors our 10th, 11th and 12th grade stu-

dents. The Minnesota Early Indicator and Response System (MEIRS) oversees all students then identifies

those who are showing signs of struggling, matches them with proactive interventions and monitors their aca-

demic progress. This system is similar to the Build Assets, Reduce Risks (BARR) program for 9th grade stu-

dents that was first implemented last year. MEIRS has a team of DHS teachers who determine, discuss and

address students needs at regularly scheduled MEIRS meetings.

The teams of teachers look at the attendance, behavior and coursework progress of a group of students en-

trusted to them to look after for the academic year. It is hoped that the teams of teachers would have access to

the students through their regularly scheduled classes, before or after school, or during the WIN time each day.

Each core curriculum department (Math, English, Science, or Social Studies) has reserved a WIN period each

week for servicing the students who have been assigned to an intervention. Students who are missing over

10% of their classes, have behavioral referrals, or have current progress “Fs” are recognized as struggling to-

ward adequate academic progress.

“The MEIRS program is an important part of the Multiple Tiered Support System (MTSS) that encourages

students to improve their achievement in school,“ states Tonya Sconiers, Denfeld Principal. “Providing Tier II

interventions is another form of academic insurance that provide all our students the chance for higher

achievement.” Students receive an invitation for additional attention to their issue beyond what happens in the

classroom and the MEIRS team monitors the students’ response to the intervention until progress is evidenced.

If progress is not made then the student is referred to Tier III interventions which is handled by the Student

Success Team (SST). This Tier II level of care and concern for Denfeld students is expected to make a differ-

ence in the graduation rates for all students.

If you have any questions regarding this program, please call Kevin Chederquist at 336-8830 Ext. 2005 or

Seniors

College Applications

Are you still pondering your future? Think about applying to college! Whether it’s a training program

or a 4-year degree, the Duluth-Superior area has some GREAT local options for colleges and universities.

If you’re considering college, seniors who have not already done so should apply to colleges in which

they are interested. Applying to college isn’t a commitment unless you apply early decision. Programs at

community and technical colleges can fill-up quickly, so apply early to have the best chance of getting

into your field of interest.

Colleges require a copy of each student’s high school transcript. Students can request a transcript

through Parchment. The link to Parchment can be found by going to the Guidance Tab on the Denfeld

website and scrolling down and clicking on Transcripts.

Scholarships

Many of the local scholarships have a deadline of January 15, 2019. Be sure to request letters of recommenda-

tion as soon as possible and complete the application well before the due date. Please DON’T WAIT until the last

minute! The Career Center Coordinators (Room 1212), Mrs. Tusken and Mrs. Long, are a great resource for assis-

tance in completing your scholarship applications. Your school counselors are also available to help you.

Your scholarship quest doesn’t end after January 15! Listen to announcements and check in the Career Center

for additional scholarship opportunities.

Juniors Mark your calendars!

Junior Night will be held on February 13, 2019 in the Denfeld High School Auditorium at 6:00 pm.

All Juniors and their parents/guardians are encouraged to attend to learn about Senior year.

ACT Plus Writing Test Day!

Juniors are also going to be given the opportunity to take the ACT Plus Writing during the school day.

The ACT is a college entrance exam that tests students in Reading, English, Science, Mathematics, and

Writing Skills. It is a nationally recognized test which is required to attend most four year colleges and

some two year programs. The test is being given on April 2nd and will cost students $55. Students on

free/reduced lunch will be asked to pay $5.00. If a student decides to take the ACT on a national test date

- on a Saturday, the cost would be $67.00.

Only juniors will be allowed to ACT test on April 2nd. The details about the test setting and procedure

are still in the works. The ACT test will begin promptly at 9:00 and will end at approximately 1:30.

Those testing will have a late lunch and return to their regular schedule afterward. Unlike the last several

years, all other grades will have school that day.

What if I am not planning to go onto college? Any junior who elects not to take the ACT will fol-

low his/her regular schedule.

ACT Prep Course Offered

Doorway to College/ZAPS staff will be presenting an ACT Prep course at Denfeld in the Smartboard

room off of the Library on March 20 - 20, 2019 from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. Look for more information, includ-

ing cost, coming in the mail in February.

College Visits

Actually setting foot on a college campus can go a long way in helping a student to decide if a college

is a good fit for them. Looking at websites and talking with college admissions reps only goes so far. Vis-

iting campuses this spring is a wonderful option for juniors who are trying to decide where they might

want to go to college. If you’re interested in scheduling a visit to a college or university, contact the Ad-

missions Office. They will be happy to set up a date and time to tour and answer any questions you may

have.

Another way to learn about colleges and universities is to attend the talks with the Admissions Reps

when they visit the Career Center. Listen to announcements or check the bulletin board inside the main

entrance.

Sophomores

Keep up the good work!

On December 4, 2018, 10th grade students are invited to meet with local scholarship representatives

during WIN to learn the ins-and-outs of earning scholarships. The students will be given a list of the cur-

rent local scholarships and learn about the opportunities that will be available to them in the future. Topics

will include the value of hard work in school, challenge yourself as a student, and the importance of being

involved at school and in the community.

Career and College Readiness Opportunities

Sophomores will have the opportunity to attend one or two of the following activities:

Construct Tomorrow at the end of February at the DECC

College and Career Fair at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in March, 2019

Transitions Fair in February or March

Freshman

The march towards graduation begins now. Ninth grade students need to have earned 5.5- 6 credits by

the end of the school year in order to be considered on track to graduation. WIN is a great time to get ex-

tra help and support in your classes. Sign up for WIN with the teachers you need extra support with. Na-

tional Honor Society tutors are also available during WIN time to help with homework assignments. See

your WIN teacher or counselor if you need assistance signing up for those opportunities. You're setting the

foundation for your cumulative grade point average and class rank. We encourage you to do your absolute

best!

Registration

Registration for the 2019 - 2020 school year will begin the first full week in February, 2019. School

counselors will be meeting with students to review the registration process, talk about requirements for

graduation, and answer any questions. Students are welcome to register at home and the instructions can

be found in the Supplement Course Guide for 2019 - 2020. In addition, counselors will be meeting with

students in the computer lab to assist with registration the week of February 11th. On February 4, 2019,

Denfeld will host an Open House for all 8th grade students and their families who will be attending Den-

feld during the 2019 - 2020 school year.

Honors/CITS/AP Course Requirements

Any student enrolling in an Honors, College-In-The-Schools (CITS),or Advanced Placement (AP)

course, please review the Commitment Agreement found in the Course Registration Supplement which

will be handed out during registration. This Agreement outlines the commitment requirements for the

challenging courses, as well as explaining the course expectations. By enrolling in one or more of these

courses the student and parent are, essentially, agreeing to the additional rigor, workload, and time

commitment, along with understanding that if the course doesn’t work out the student may not be

moved to the traditional version of the class.

CITS courses offer high school students the opportunity to receive college credit through high school

coursework. Colleges awarding the credit may include Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, Lake

Superior College, or the University of Minnesota - Duluth. Each of the colleges have set criteria that must

be met to register for the course(s). Please see the Course Registration Supplement for details.

AP courses are another option for adding rigor to a student’s schedule. The AP curriculum consists of

standardized high school courses that are roughly equivalent to undergraduate college courses. After

completing the AP course, students take the AP exam in that subject which can earn them credits and/or

accelerated placement in college. See your counselor if you have questions. More information can be

found in the Supplement Course Guide for 2019 - 2020 which will be handed out in February.

ISD #709 Athletic & Activity Eligibility

It’s time to review 2018-19 athletic and activity eligibility. When determining student eligibility we

look at two things:

No F’s on report card (for a quarter grade or an F for a final grade).

Is the student on track for graduation (# of credits).

Each fall we run grade reports on all athletes from the previous school year. If a student received an F in

any class for the fourth grade period OR received an F as a final grade in any class – the student will be

ineligible until September 28th (the fourth Friday of the school year). If on Friday, September 28th the stu-

dent is passing all classes, they become eligible.

A student may retain eligibility if they complete the failed class during summer school or online.

Besides grades, we also look at the number of credits earned (based on the chart below). If your

son/daughter does not meet the requirements, please contact their counselor.

Incoming 10th grader (sophomore) – 5.25 credits, 8.0 credits at semester

Incoming 11th grader (junior) – 11.25 credits, 13.75 credits at semester

Incoming 12th grader (senior) – 16.50 credits, 19.00 credits at semester

22.50 credits to graduate in 2019 and beyond

Please make sure your son/daughter has an up-to-date physical on file with the activities office.

7th grade physical is good for three years (through 9th grade)

In most cases, all incoming 10th graders need a new physical dated after June 10, 2018.

The 10th grade physical is also good for three years (through 12th grade).

If you have any questions regarding athletic eligibility or physicals, please contact Tom Pearson at

336-8830 ext. 1948 or [email protected] OR Krista Hill at 336-8830 ext. 2145 or Kris-
