SELECTED PROJECTS

• Planning Interdisciplinary Postgraduate programs at UTS 2017

(UTS, $38,000) Summary: I am the Project Director (ISF) under the direction of Professor Lesley Hitchens (Law) which involves working with faculties across the university to plan the pilot and introduction of new interdisciplinary post graduate degrees at UTS.

• Central Park (CCP) Organics Management Feasibility Study 2017 ($20,000 - City of Sydney and $30,000 - Flow Systems) Summary: I am Project Director and Chief Investigator of a feasibility study of organic waste management (food, sewage, trade) using an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) system at Central Park, taking into consideration collection, transport, treatment and reuse of organic waste at a building scale to minimise waste and maximise resource recovery (energy, biosolids) while considering associated economic and socio-cultural issues.

• Briefing Paper: The Water - Waste Industry Convergence 2016-2017 (Department of Environment & Energy, $10,000) Summary: I am Project Director and researcher of a team of four co-authors collating and synthesising the risks and opportunities associated with the emerging trend of the convergence between the water and waste industries. The project was funded by the Department Environment.

• Organics management in the Pyrmont-Ultimo Precinct 2016-2017 (NSW EPA $20,000 and Sydney Water Corporation $40,000) Summary: I am the Co-Director and researcher of this project to conduct a feasibility study of alternative organics management systems in the Pyrmont-Ultimo Precinct. Tasks included conducting an (1) international literature review and system map of the scope of potential systems, technologies and approaches to manage organic waste streams, (2) mapping material flows of organic waste across the precinct, (3) interviews with key stakeholders implicated and invested in the organics waste management system and communication and dissemination of finding at an organised ‘Organics summit’ with key industry and government stakeholders.

• Onsite recycling of organics at University of Technology Sydney 2016-2017

($244K NSW EPA + $244K FMO/UTS + $45K UTS Resources) Summary: I am the Project Director and Chief Investigator on this project, managing two research staff and co-ordinating an interdisciplinary winter school connected to the EPA grant with Dr Ali Crosby from DAB. The aim of the project is to install 2 processing systems at 2 different sites at the city campus at UTS with the aim of managing 100% of the organic waste streams from cafes, staff/student kitchens and public bins on-site. Once dehydrated organics have been processed on-site, and outputs regulated by the EPA, we will be seeking to use the nutrient rich soil conditioner in local council gardens/parks and market gardens to sustainably manage all organics produced. Discussions with local councils have been initiated with City of Sydney and Leichardt Council to receive the organic outputs from the system once the

regulatory issues have been settled with potential sites for use being local parks and gardens and community gardens.

• UTS Vice Chancellor’s Teaching and Learning Grant – Scoping, developing, trialling and evaluating resources to support transdisciplinary learning, teaching, design and research in higher education, 2016 (UTS $10K) Summary: I am a co-leader of the teaching and learning grant with Dr Tanja Golja. The project aimed to support academics to take transdisciplinary approaches in designing, teaching and evaluating learning experiences for their students, whether at undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD level. Its significance lies in, first, building staff capability as UTS begins to scale up transdisciplinary offerings and, second, collaborating with and contributing to international networks to progress this field. The outcomes from the project are resources (concept descriptions, techniques, processes, methodologies, tools) curated developmentally to assist academics in understanding transdisciplinary principles and practices, and enacting such ideas in their teaching or design of programs.

• Scoping Interdisciplinary Postgraduate programs at UTS 2016 (UTS $109K) Summary: I am the Project Director of this project. Having identified the need to develop a range of interdisciplinary postgraduate degrees at UTS, this project involved scoping the potential and recommendations for the introduction of new interdisciplinary degrees at UTS. This was achieved by scanning both local and international best practice in the delivery of interdisciplinary programs in research, teaching and learning as well as through strong engagement with stakeholders throughout the process. An implementation strategy was developed, in consultation with key faculty, to trial two to three pilot interdisciplinary postgraduate degrees with a market research brief providing an outline of the proposed degrees for conducting further market research for 2017.

• Cleaning contaminated sites with effective social engagement, 2015-2017 (NSW Environmental Trust, $193,500) Summary: I am the Project Manager and research consultant on this project. The research aims to effectively engage affected communities in risk management responses and the remediation of contaminated sites. Beyond the management of 5 project partners from government and industry, I have been involved in interviewing a range of community members and organisations involved in the remediation of contaminated sites at Botany, synthesising data, developing final reporting and publication of results.

• Alaskan Water and Sewer Challenge, 2014-2015

(Alaskan Department of Environment & Conservation $100K) Summary: I was involved as Project Manager (of the Australian team) and social researcher within an international team funded by the Alaskan government to design innovative water and sanitation systems for remote indigenous communities. I was involved in interviewing 25 stakeholders from government, industry and remote communities on their knowledge of and preferences for low cost, low technological systems. The data was analysed, developed into design principles and used as primary guidance for developing culturally appropriate, socially acceptable systems for remote communities.

• Doctoral research – People and practices: Fostering transitions toward sustainability

through transdisciplinary inquiry and individual, social and organisational learning, 2014 Summary: The sociological perspective of ‘people and practices’ adopted to study transitions in sanitation revealed the complex relationship between sanitation technologies, users/consumers

and managers/providers of these systems. Contributions to new knowledge resulting from this research span praxis and methodology. This has included identification of principles for designing experiments to support social learning in transdisciplinary projects inclusive of end-users, processes for engaging end-users in adopting new practices through social learning, and methods for translating individual learning into organisational learning and change by organisations trialling sustainable innovation. Methodological contributions include the identification and application of a cumulative staged approach to case study research on transitions and demonstration of the value and validity of qualitative social research in facilitating and supporting the emergence of new and fragile practices.

• Transitioning to sustainable sanitation futures: a transdisciplinary pilot project of urine

diversion systems, 2010-12 ($70K, plus $125K industry funds and $165K in-kind contributions) I was involved as a project manager, social scientist and participant within a transdisciplinary project team, trialling urine diversion (UD) systems within UTS to determine the viability of UD as a resource recovery and reuse system in practice. My role invovleved managing 15 partners from industry, government and 3 universities (UNSW, UTS and WSU) across 4 faculties (Business, Design, Engineering and Law), organising workshops and co-ordinating teams to work across disciplinary fields in the project.

• Mutual Learning for Social Change: Using social research to support the introduction of

urine diverting toilets in the Kinglake West Sewerage Project, 2011 (Yarra Valley Water $110K) I was involved as social scientist, facilitator, co-author and collaborator, using social research to support the introduction of urine diverting toilets in the Kinglake West Sewerage Project in Victoria, Australia. This project, used as case study for my PhD research involved interviewing household residents, tradespeople and utility managers involved in trialling, installing managing and using innovative systems of sanitation; analysing the data, planning and facilitating workshops with managers from Yarra Valley Water (water utility).

• Melbourne Sewage Strategy: Development of qualitative decentralised systems, 2009

(Melbourne Water $80K) I was involved as research consultant, co-author and contributor to developing decentralised concepts and case studies for the 2009 Metropolitan Sewerage Strategy for the provision of sustainable sewerage options for Melbourne over the next fifty years.
