From the Editor February is a busy month at the club: we have already had two concerts, a dinner dance and Fastelavn. They are wonderful events: why not

come along to a Folkrag Old & New Concert, the local folk scene has many facets. At the Fastelavn party, the many kids dressed up in colourful costumes and the odd flying nun (yes, that was really Iben) made it difficult to pick the winners of the ‘best dressed’ prizes, but Peter Pan (Anton) and Pippi Longstocking

(Tia) appealed to the discerning judges. The barrel made by Alan with beautiful artwork by by Tommy Brandi was too good to be beaten to pieces and it

knew! Lots of hard work before the barrel gave up its goodies.

The immediate world around the club is certainly changing with work commencing on the new units across the street.

Once the old concrete slabs have been removed, excavation works will start. There are also new tenants in the neighbouring building (number 32) adding lots of activity to the streetscape after a couple of quiet years. The club will try and keep up

with developments and add new elements to our street frontage.

Committee The committee currently

has nine members: Soren Hoimark, Alan Przybylak, Iben Giessing Lund,

Peter Wagner Hansen, Eva Kaiser, Henning Klinke Jørgensen, Lis Larsen,

Maria Faurskov Nielsen and Lone Schmidt. Charlotte Due Adams will be

joining the committee at the March meeting.

Courtyard We have purchased outdoor furniture (timber tables and benches)

which will be arriving from Denmark in March. Currently working on ideas for

new fence panels to secure the courtyard.

Ceiling The existing ceiling is looking increasingly fragile and replacement

ceiling tiles are no longer available. Alan has to cut new tiles to size. Soren

is sourcing quotes for new ceiling and if possible we’ll raise the new ceiling.

Insurance Have just renewed the

club’s insurance at an annual cost of nearly $6,000. Public liability limit

increased to $10m.

Scandinavian Festival 2016 The new

festival date is 11 September 2016 – work is already in progress.

Membership We’ve dropped back to

290 from the 300 member mark, and

are still chasing around 30 members for membership fees for the current year.

Hall Hire The Corner Pocket Swing

dancers are now using the club three evenings a week. Weekends are

always busy with concerts or private functions and the committee is happy

with the current activity level.

Events We have two concerts coming

up in March. March Café Danmark would coincide with Good Friday and we

have reluctantly cancelled.

Wi-Fi We are looking at installing wi-fi at the club, initially on a trial basis.

Beer, snaps and licorice The new order is expected to arrive early March

just in time for the Easter lunch.

Money The first seven months show a surplus of approx. $44,000.

Check out the Royal Life Guard uniform at the club. Many thanks to Lars Jeppesen who not only managed to acquire the royal insignia for the uniform, but also polished

and rearranged the sabre.

FOLK DANCERS VISIT TOOWOOMBA

Despite severe storm warnings on the Friday, 19 folk dancers descended upon

the James Byrne Centre in Toowoomba on 29 January. Set in beautiful, peace-

ful surroundings this was the venue where the Country Women’s Asso-

ciation held their Conference this year.

They were studying Greenland and

invited the Folk dancers to perform traditional Danish Folk dancing at their

Saturday evening dinner. Tom was asked to give a talk on Greenland.

During his talk Tom spoke about the

history of Greenland, first settled by the Viking, Eric the Red with his 14 boats in

986 AD up to the present time. It is now an independent state with Danish

support. He also showed photos and videos from Greenland with the dancers

from Greenland performing at home and in Viborg, Denmark at the Nordlek

Festival last year.

Later in the afternoon, Jennifer Ras-

mussen, one of our dancers, and her husband Jan brought along their Husky,

Asgard and told the audience of the work these beautiful dogs perform in

that part of the world.

Beading was the topic of Pam Arm-

strong’s talk and she showed some beautiful pieces of work.

As we were walking towards dinner that

evening we were surprised to find a photographer from the local Toowoom-

ba newspaper waiting who captured some nice shots of us in our colourful

costumes, some in dance pose. Maybe one day we will be famous!

After a delicious dinner, it was time for us to dance. Everyone enjoyed the

dancing and were enthusiastic about participating in the ‘Familiesekstur fra

Præstø’. “This is such fun”, one lady said to me. They were a friendly group

of women and made us feel very welcome and much appreciated our

attendance that weekend.

These weekends away are such happy times and enjoyed by all. Many thanks

to Tom and Lis for arranging another great event.

.

Jennifer, Jan and Asgard

The Scandinavian Singers.

Page 13: Den Danske Forening Heimdal - danishclubbrisbane

3324 8986. KOMMENDE GUDSTJENESTER Datoerne for kommende gudstjenester i Brisbane er: Søndag 20. marts 2016 kl. 14.00 Lørdag 25. juni 2016 kl. 10.00

Søndag 28. august 2016 kl. 14.00 Med venlig hilsen Merete, Magnus, Pat og Pia
