From the Editor
Happy New Year! The club year kicks off in style on February 1 with a show by Danish comedian Carsten Knudsen. The
committee has already had its first meeting and just yesterday we were bowled over by
a grant for $32,000 from the QLD Gambling Community Benefit Fund for an
upgrade of our kitchen facilities. It’s
Christmas all over again and a huge boost
for the club. The committee will have to think hard to get the best possible result
from the grant. That’s the challenge for 2014.

Study & Stay in Australia? Your door to the best in Australian Education & Training….
IAE Study In Australia is owned and operated by a Dane – Riborg Andersen – a former teacher and senior government employee, with a strong background in both Danish and Australian education and training. We
are a professional International Education Agent, with over 18 years’ experience. Did you know that when Denmark decided that it wanted every senior secondary student to have an international experience, the Danish Undervisningsministeriet invited Riborg, as the only Australia
representative, to run workshops for Danish secondary schools seeking to establish relationships with international counterparts, to encourage their students to have an international study experience? Using our
knowledge and expertise, we help Danish (and many other international students) to come and study in Australia. Do you have family or friends in Denmark wanting to come and study in Australia?
We are here to help.
For individual students, we can help you to find a suitable school, college or university taking into account a student’s academic background, family/friendship ties in Australia, their strengths and interests, budget and aims. We place students into primary and secondary schools, TAFEs and
universities all over Australia.
For Danish schools, colleges and universities, we can help you to identify suitable partner institutions in Australia, and develop successful Study Abroad programs. Over the years, we have
established such programs between Australian institutions and schools/colleges in Aalborg, Aarhus, Skanderborg, Silkeborg, Køge and Roskilde among other places.
Tell us what your aims are, and we can find the best way forward. Did you know Australia now offers a 485
Graduate Visa for students graduating from any 2-year Australian Bachelor or Master’s degree, and wanting to stay in Australia for another 2 years to work and/or play? Want to know more? Ask us. And the best
news …We do not charge any service fee, as we are paid by the Australian schools, colleges and universities. We look forward to hearing from you.

What better way than to start the year with a Party?!
Many members of the Danish Folk Dance Group “Heimdal” are reaching certain milestones in
2014... namely 60th, 70th & 75th birthdays.
Our last party was so popular we have decided to do it again! Hence, we have thrown open the
doors and would like to invite you all to join us for another night of fabulous food, live
entertainment and dancing.
Kupaleja, our very own and much loved Band, will get the festivities rolling for the evening
with some of our favourite Scandinavian tunes.
Michael Whitmore and his “Big Band” sound (known from clubs + Cruise Liners) will provide
the main entertainment with anything from Jazz, Rock’n’Roll & Country to “Pride of Erin”…
ensuring a full dance floor at all times.
When: Saturday, 8 February 2014
6pm for a 6:30pm start
Where: Danish Club, Austin St, Newstead
Cost: $35 includes 3 course dinner, coffee/tea and birthday cake
(Bar will be open on the night)
Please note that bookings are essential. Our last party was a sell-out & sadly we had to turn
away over 20 people at the door. Don’t miss out!
Please contact Lone on 0437 612 913 or simply email your booking with the number of people
and pay in the amount due to the club account marked 8Feb14 and your name. The

Fastelavn Party
Sunday 9 February 2014
2 – 5 pm Get the kids dressed up and ready for action. If you have run
out of ideas, there are lots of suggestions in the side bar.
Adults may dress up too!
There’ll be prizes for best-dressed boy and girl, so now’s the time
to start up the sewing machine and get going.
‘KUPALEJA’ will entertain young and old with songs and games
from Denmark and lead us up to the big event: bashing the
barrel to scare the black cat away and get to the goodies
inside.
There’ll be delicious fastelavnsboller available from Britt’s
to go with your afternoon coffee or maybe you prefer a
hot dog with a cold beer. You can also order fastelavnsboller
in advance to take home.
Send an email to Lone at [email protected] by
Tuesday 4 February 2014 to let her know that you and the kids
are coming or ring on 3359 2026 or 0437 612 913 with details.

Access and Inclusion Partnership Program 2012/13
Last year, the Danish Association Heimdal was awarded a grant of $3,182.52 to resolve
2 existing problems – the lack of proper access by wheelchair and lacking facilities in disabled toilet.
Having consulted with a specialist, the implemented solutions were:
A ramp connecting footpath with our front courtyard and a second ramp enabling safe and comfortable access into the clubhouse through either of our sliding doors.
Installation of new tap on bathroom sink with better grip as well as a rail (see below photo).
This project is proudly funded by an Access and Inclusion Partnership Program from Brisbane City Council
The aluminium ramps are securely stored in our courtyard and can quickly be placed to enable access by wheelchair.
On behalf of the Danish Association Heimdal we acknowledge and thank Brisbane City
Council for their kind assistance and support.

Jumping Pillows
Do you know what Jumping Pillows are? The Idea of Jumping Pillows originated 20 years
ago in Denmark. It is great fun and a healthy way of keeping kids (and even adults)
entertained all day long. Jumping Pillows are being installed all over Europe with more
than 5000 happy customers in Scandinavian countries alone.
In Australia, Jumping Pillows have been a huge success especially with resorts and
holiday parks. They are also suitable for playgrounds, amusement parks, kindergartens,
schools, sport clubs etc.
You will often find children and adults playing together on the Jumping Pillows all day
long. It is also amazing to see how the kids can stay on the Jumping Pillows for hours
and hours and keep jumping and inventing new games. Amazingly, the bounce from one
child (or adult) has very little effect on any other person.
Depending on the size of a Jumping Pillow, you will often find 10, 20, 30 or even more
children jumping their hearts out, all at the same time.
The biggest Jumping Pillow in the Southern Hemisphere is located in Australia at Cairns
Coconut Caravan Resort. It is 30m long, 16m wide, with 480 m² of pure jumping joy.

Dragør sits on the southeastern coast of the island of Amager and is located only 12 km from central Copenhagen, but the town is not a part of the urban area of Copenhagen. Together with the neighbouring village of Store Magleby, it forms a separate urban area with a population of 11,874 (1 January 2013).
Dragør has many well preserved historical buildings. The old part of the town is a cozy, picturesque maze of alleys with yellow-painted houses, red roofs, and cobblestone streets built in the traditional Danish style. Many of these buildings are hundreds of years old.
Dragør was a prosperous seafaring town in the latter half of the 19th century, and its charming harbour front is still in use.
History Dragør was founded in the 12th century, and grew quickly as a fishing port. In 1370, the Hanseatic League was granted some trade privileges in the town. Dragør continued to grow as the home of one of the largest fishing fleets in the country and as a base for salting and processing fish.
The first part of the name, Drag-, refers to drawing (dragging) boats ashore. The ending -ør is common in Scandinavian place names and means a beach covered in sand or gravel.
The area has a Dutch ancestry that is still much in evidence. In the early 16th century, King Christian II invited a group of farmers from the Netherlands — at the time a more agriculturally advanced nation than Denmark — to settle in the area and produce food for the royal household. Twenty-four families arrived. They and their descendants settled in the village of Store Magleby. Tensions between the Dutch farmers of the inland and the Danish fishermen and sailors at the coast are still detectable now, with a certain rivalry between citizens of Store Magleby and Dragør. The Dutch peasants delivered vegetables to the Amagertorv market in Copenhagen. Among their many other achievements they were responsible for introducing the carrot to Denmark. Dutch and Low German were still spoken on Amager until the 19th century.
Attractions
The Amager Museum, an open-air recreation of life in old rural Amager. Dragør Museum, a seafaring museum located at Dragør harbour. The Kastrupgaard Collection (Kastrupgårdsamlingen) in nearby Kastrup. An art museum on the
premises of an estate from the 18th century. Mølsted Museum, in the heart of old Dragør in the artist's studio, an art museum dedicated to the
works of seascape painter Christian Mølsted (1862–1930). Dragør is the sister city of Kodiak, Alaska.

Scandinavian Festival 2014 Our September date coincides with the
Bridge to Brisbane run. As access to Austin Street will be severely curtailed
with Breakfast Creek Road closed for traffic, our only option is to move the
festival. 31 August 2014 is currently looking like the best option. Grants
from QLD Government $9,000 and Brisbane City Council $5,000 have
already been awarded. This year, we want to start early with ideas for the
club’s stalls so we’re better prepared with t-shirts and aprons for volunteers
and interesting stall set-ups.
Australia Day Flag Raising
Ceremony The club has received an invite to participate in the QLD
Government’s Flag Raising Ceremony at South Bank.
Membership We’ve almost reached the 250 member mark, all paid up.
Still chasing around 13 members for membership fees for the current year.
Events Programme for 2014 was
discussed, February will be a busy month. The big birthday party is
already fully booked. It might be an idea to arrange babysitting at the
Carsten Knudsen event if we can find a
suitable sitter with a Blue Card. Alan has made a new barrel for Fastelavn.
Café Danmark in April falls on Anzac Day and it was decided to cancel the
café.
Beer, snaps and licorice The latest
shipment of beer, snaps and liquorice sold well, with many lines sold out at
Christmas. A new order has just been placed: Søren has secured some more
Julebryg. Faxe Kondi and Tuborg non-alcoholic beer are some other new
products for the bar. We’re also looking into an airfreight solution to
get Anthon Berg Easter eggs shipped in time for Easter of course.
Grants We have applied for $10,000 in funding for the book project about
our history in Brisbane and are hoping for a favourable outcome.
Books and old printer After the
library clean-up many books were boxed up and we’ll put out the boxes
at cafes for members to help themselves. As interest in old books is
generally very low, we’ll have to
dispose of any books not taken. Also, if anybody is interested in our old
printer, we can give it away.
New equipment and maintenance We’re still looking at covering the
courtyard area and replacing the fascia in the new year. Ducting from kitchen
exhaust to be re-directed. Alan has been busy over the holiday period and
overall the club is looking good. The
ceiling tiles are looking tired with many needing replacement.
Money The first six months show a
profit of approx. $35,000 enabling us to finance maintenance needs.
Brisbane City Council has just granted us a $1,300 discount on our rates
(annual rates etc are $8,000) – a welcome contribution.
For godt nok glæder

ordbogsgeneratoren.
muligheder for nye danske ord.
godt-ord-igen.dk:
Milimeteralmægtig: Følelsen af at have stor
indflydelse på ligegyldige beslutninger.
Hævnehynde: Et af de klassiske begreber fra
pudekamp.
Konfektludoman: Person som er afhængig af
julelegen ’Mus’.
Kævebanket: Banket med udelukkende flydende
varer.
Pisdims: Tissemand
Gratin-sidefag: Studieretning på kokkeskolen
Drømmestøj: Når man snakker i søvne.
Kulturkampmyose: Den smerte, man får i skuldrene

Isbjerget is situated in Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus.
Located on an old container terminal site along Aarhus’ waterfront and covering an area of
some 25,000 m², the buildings are positioned in four L-shaped wings which contain more than
200 one or two storey apartments ranging in size from 55 m² to 227 m².
Drawing its formal shape from that of floating icebergs – and of which the structure takes its
name – balconies feature glass panels in gradations of deep blue to transparent, offering a
shimmering appearance which speaks of these arctic influences.
The ground level is where two-storey townhouses are integrated into the volume of the varied
triangular buildings, while penthouses are located within the ‘peaks’, or pointed spires.
The façades – divided into triangles in free combinations – are made from white terrazzo
offering a dynamic edifice, while the balcony floors contrast the starkness with their warm
