UK COALAs one of the UK’s largest coal producers, UK COAL understandably employ a large fleet of equipment to extract the “Black Gold” from the ground. Supplying around 7% of the country’s energy needs for electricity generation. One of UK COAL’s completed projects, Cutacre, was situated just off the M61 near Bolton and included the reclamation of old colliery workings and spoil dumps covering a working area of 200 hectares of a total site measuring 320 hectares.
While 300 tonne O&K RH120s undertake the bulk of the rock extraction a smaller 80t RH30D in face shovel guise is being used along side a subbies Hyundai 210LC to clean away the last vestiges of rock before the coal cleaning work can commence. The excess rock is loaded into a number of Cat D350E ADTs before UK Coals own O&K RH9 coal shovel comes along to skim off the seams of coal which can vary on site between 170mm and 1.8m deep thus requiring a steady hand to avoid getting too much contamination in the coal.
Another area, away from the main soil strip, was also being prepared this time another of UK Coals RH30D backhoes was digging to formation and loading a fleet on Cat D400D ADTs again making light work of loading a stiff clay type material into the Cats.

ascroft transportAscroft Transport based in Tarleton near Preston are the preferred haulage contractor for the UK Cat-erpillar dealers, Finning.
Boasting a very well turned out fleet of high specification vehicles, the company have vehicles in their own livery as well as that of their client.
Vehicle choice is pretty simple with Scania being the preferred vehicle of choice for the top weight 6x4 tractors while further down the weight range Volvo, DAF and Scania vehicles have featured over the past few years.
Trailer choice is also an important part of running a profitable heavy haulage company and Ascroft run a predominately Broshuis fleet with three and four axle step-frames and multi-axle low-loaders featur-ing heavily with a number of Nooteboom low-loaders also present on the trailer park.
Capable of grossing 150 tonnes some of the Ascroft fleet are more than capable of undertaking any haulage task for Finning and can be regularly seen hauling some of the largest Caterpillar earthmoving equipment in the UK.
Beam decks are the choice for hauling some of the larger quarry trucks and large wheeled loaders and excavators as the load can sit closer to road surface reducing the overall height of the vehicle.

powerdaySituated along the banks of the Grand Union Canal in North London is Powerday, the largest recycling company in the UK. The family owned company’s head office and recycling facility are ideally situated a mere 5 miles from Oxford Street enabling the company to access waste from one of the most densely populated cities in the Western World.
Operating from their 9 acre state of the art facility in Willesden Junction the Company, headed by Chairman Mick Crossan, is proud to boast a 100% recycling record for all the material brought into their facility. Holding a license to process up to 1.6 million tonnes of waste, Powerday currently receive around 800,000 tonnes of household, office, construction and demolition waste into the facility. Top quality service is a major requirement for Powerday when it comes to their equipment fleet. If the plant is unavailable the whole process of recycling cannot commence.
Working alongside three 329D and M322D excavators are three 966H wheel loaders. Used as general workhorses around the site the 966H are used for cleaning around the stockpiles, loading the daily trains and general truck loading. The 25 tonne loaders and are seen as a more capable loader than their IT62 predecessors. As with the excavators, the operator is looked after with a large comfortable cab fitted with the standard air suspended seat and are all fitted with the more traditional steering wheel set up. As for the attachments, 2 of the machines are fitted with standard general purpose buckets whilst the third has a high tip option. Processing over 800,000 tonnes of material per year and operating 24 hours a day calls for maximum availability from the fleet of Caterpillar machinery
