I grew up in North Vancouver and have been playing football since my earlyteens. My size kind of dictated what position I play (offensive line) but I’ve learned to

really love my role on the club and on the offence. As the centre I do get to touch the ballon every play, so it all starts with me.

Growing up, I was very close to my father and he was a big influence on me during times I needed himmost. Picking my college, dealing with adversity, being the best person and player I can be were a product

of his guidance and it’s one of the reasons I love taking part in our club’s community programs.Among the programs I take part in, I would say Read, Write and Roar is among my favourites becauseI’ve seen firsthand what happens to a young person’s life when they grasp the ability to read. The benefits of literacy last a lifetime and I take pride in knowing that I might be planting the seed for afuture reader.

Longtime Ladner lawyerUlf Ottho closed the dooron his legal practice lastFriday only to open a newchapter in his life.

Last week, federal PublicSafety Minister Vic Toewsannounced 13 appoint-ments to the NationalParole Board and Ottho wasamong those named to thePacific Region.

He wrapped things upat the Delta Law Office, where he’s been practicingfor more than 30 years, andon Monday Ottho reportedfor his first day on the jobas a full-time member ofthe National Parole Boardat its Pacific Region officein Abbotsford.

He was first appointedto the board as a part-timemember in 2007.

Ottho began his careerin the same building onDelta Street in 1974 as anarticling student under HerbIvens. The practice — Ivensand Ivens — was run byHerb and his brother Boyd.

Over his 35-year careerin law, Ottho has seen it all.He has worked in variousaspects of the field, includ-ing criminal, family, civil, wills and estates, and cor-porate.

From 1984 to 1996, heacted as standing agent forthe federal Crown and pros-ecuted many cases, fromfisheries and income tax to

narcotics. Ottho said someof the biggest cases heworked on involved pros-ecuting drug dealers.

“I think the biggest one Ihad was nine tons,” he said, adding it was a large ship-ment of marijuana that hadlanded in Ladner.

Over the years, Ottho hasbeen involved in some high-profile cases. In 1978, theattorney general’s inquiryinto the Delta police depart-ment was initiated in his

office. Ottho worked on theinquiry along with fellowlawyers Percy Smith andRon Pitters.

He said at the time therewere complaints of the useof excessive force by someofficers and “other irregu-larities” at the department. There was a deteriorationof the relationship betweenthe youth of South Deltaand the police department,he said.

“When it was all over...

the chief had resignedand the deputy chief hadresigned,” he said.

Over his years of legalpractice, Ottho has seeneverything from medi-cal malpractice suits toattempted murder cases.

And throughout theyears, Ottho has also beenheavily involved in thecommunity. He was a direc-tor with the Delta Chamberof Commerce for a numberof years, sat as vice presi-

dent for a time and actedas general counsel for theorganization; he was gen-eral counsel for the DeltaArts Society; he’s workedwith the Delta Foundationand the Delta HospitalFoundation; he wasappointed by Delta councilto work with the municipal-ity in an advisory capacity;and he is a past presidentof the Ladner BusinessAssociation.

One of his pet causes,

however, has been the con-servation of Burns Bog.In 1984, Ottho and Smithstarted the Don’t Dump onDelta committee to opposethe Greater VancouverRegional District’s (whichis now known as MetroVancouver) plan to expandthe Vancouver Landfill.

The community rallied,as it often does in SouthDelta, and the committeestarted a petition that hadthousands of signatures injust a few weeks. The planwas halted and Ottho’swork attracted the atten-tion of the Ministry of theEnvironment.

“I’m proud of my rolein sparing 560 acres of bogland in that way,” he said.

Ottho said he decidedto make the change andapply for the parole boardappointment because hewants to be a part of someupcoming changes to thesystem Ottawa is looking at.

Ottho said he was feelinga little nostalgic and wistfulas he wrapped things up atthe Delta Law Office forthe last time last Friday.

He had taken a step backfrom his legal work over thelast two years as he tookon the part-time positionwith the parole board. In2008, he sold the practice toMurray Lott but stayed onas an associate counsel.

With the full-time, three-year appointment, however,Ottho is precluded fromother work.

Ottho appointed to parole boardAfter a successful 35-year practice in Ladner, lawyer begins new chapter with full-time appointment

condominiums and apart-ments close to the towncentre.

The only question thatdid not see a clear major-ity was the one asking ifthe municipality shouldlower the maximum height

of new houses. The resultswere almost split down themiddle.

Civic politicians haveasked the area plan commit-tee to consider incorporat-ing five points, based onthe survey results, into the

new plan: retain the currentpolicy and land use desig-nation, as agricultural, forthe Southlands; retain thecurrent policy regarding afour-storey height limit forbuildings in the town centrearea; retain the existing pol-icy for single-family subdi-vision; develop policies andland use designations for

permitting the developmentof higher density housingclose to the town centre;and develop policies regard-ing building heights for newhouses in Tsawwassen.

The committee is cur-rently working on a draft

plan to bring back to coun-cil for public consultationand approval. Council isasking it to report back withits recommendations byAug. 30, but Coun. BruceMcDonald, who chairs thecommittee, said the report

should be ready beforethen.

Council decided to do themail survey after problemsarose with an online survey.

The survey cost $18,500as well as an additional$6,592 in mailing costs.

Delta’s mayor has alreadysaid the thousands paid tohave meetings arranged inOttawa was money wellspent, and last week civicstaff outlined what themunicipality got for itsmoney.

Back in March, Deltacouncil approved spend-ing up to $22,000 on aconsultant to set up one-on-one meetings with federalofficials. It hired TactixGovernment Relations andPublic Affairs Inc. (Tactix)to secure meetings with keygovernment staff in severaldepartments.

The municipal-ity partnered with MetroVancouver and the two gov-ernments split the $27,000cost — Delta paid $16,000while Metro Vancouvermade up the remaining$11,000.

Mayor Lois Jacksonand councillors BruceMcDonald and ScottHamilton were joined inOttawa by CAO GeorgeHarvie, police chief JimCessford, fire chief DanCopeland and Sean McGill,

Delta’s director of humanresources and corporateplanning.

The group had 21 meet-ings over four days, June1 to 4, that covered a vari-ety of issues — policing, dredging, Burns Bog, solidwaste, fire and housing.

“We undertook a verylong, arduous week inOttawa,” said Jackson. “Itwas a very, very... gruelingweek and, I believe, a fruit-ful one.”

Two years ago, Delta andAlpha Aviation hired thesame Ottawa-based firmto arrange meetings withfederal officials, an expen-diture that cost $12,000.

McGill told council thatmaking key contacts duringthe first round of meetingsin 2008 helped the munici-pality garner funding forseveral projects.

“Those meetings wereextremely important to us,”he said.

McGill also said thework done by Tactix ismore than a municipalitycould expect from a localMP.

“The scope of thisarrangement is outside whatcan be expected from a

local MP’s office,” he toldcouncil. “It includes con-ducting political research, arranging meetings at vari-ous levels with politiciansand bureaucrats, providingguidance and on-groundsupport.”

McGill said the meet-ings have already producedsome results on many ofthe issues Delta and MetroVancouver took to Ottawa.

In the case of BurnsBog, Environment Canadarepresentatives have con-tacted Delta to review theecological conservancy areaand conservation covenantamendment process inregards to a Ramsar desig-nation, which would pro-vide long-term protection tothe bog.

McGill said meetingswith representatives fromthe Department of Fisheriesand Oceans, TransportCanada, and the Ministryof Transport, Infrastructureand Communities helpedraise the profile of the needfor dredging in local chan-nels.

Jackson called the trip “avery worthwhile venture forus that I know will pay divi-dends over the next year.”

Ignoringthem won’tdo the trick

TEDMURPHY

MURPHY’SLAW

I’m not so sure Delta should be count-ing on birds of prey, or car tires, toaddress the rabbit situation at the LadnerLeisure Centre.

There are, by municipal estimates, 200rabbits in and around the civic precinct. These feral bunnies provide a cute andcuddly sideshow for those visiting theleisure centre and I suspect they evenattract people to the area. At this point, civic officials are choosing to ignore theissue, hoping instead that Mother Naturewill take care of it for them.

You only have to look across the waterat the University of Victoria to see whatcould happen here if the situation isn’taddressed soon. It’s believed abandonedhouse pets — sound familiar? — wereleft on campus to multiply over the yearsto the point university officials peggedthe population at a whopping 1,600 lastmonth.

They, too, are looked upon as a bit ofa campus attraction, but at those numbersthey’re now creating health and safetyconcerns. The plentiful droppings arecausing health issues, they’re destroyingcertain types of vegetation and the holesthey dig pose a danger, particularly onplaying fields, where at least one anklehas been broken.

The issue has spun far enough outof control that UVic has had to employa limited cull around playing fields, amove that has proven to be unpopular.

Delta’s situation is far from that point, and any concerns tend to centre on thewell being of the animals rather than theadverse effects, but given they are, well, rabbits, it won’t take long for the popu-lation to approach the total in Victoria, where university officials say they cleanthree to five rabbits off the roads everyday.

It stands to reason the longer Ladner’sbunnies are left to multiply, the greaterthe issues that will develop. I’m not surewhether those concerns will be for thebunnies themselves or with the problemsthey create, but I am certain it will be farmore difficult dealing with 500 or 1,000rabbits than it will be with the current200.

If Ladner’s bunnies aren’t causing anyheadaches for the municipality or thosewho frequent the leisure centre, andthey’re not in any danger, which appearsto be the case at the moment, then it’seasy to look the other way. How long thiswillful blindness can continue will, inlarge part, depend on how big this colonybecomes.

Given they’re rabbits, which haveearned the reputation they have, Deltawon’t be able to ignore this one for toomuch longer.

Howdy folks from the wild weststates of Wyoming, Idaho andMontana. My husband, our friendLouis and I are riding the back-roads on our iron horses and enjoy-ing the company of our small townneighbours. I find myself cominghere as a way of recharging mybatteries and reminding myself whyit’s important to protect our greenspaces.

Canada’s west wasn’t settled inthe same way as the United States,so we have a golden opportunity tolearn from their mistakes as wellas what they’ve done right. We’refamiliar with the shoot ‘em up sto-ries from the gold rush and cowboydays, but how well do we know thestories of how town squares anda proper main street were put intouse?

In fact, most western towns werebased on a pretty good model of

town planning. Government andsocial buildings were situated inthe centre of town along with acentral park and shopping area.Homes were within walking dis-tance of these services. Liveries, blacksmithies and other industrialcrafts were outside these areas forsanitary reasons but still walkable.

The advent of the car, of course, changed everything and suddenlythat model was thrown out thewindow in many cases — but notall. Strip malls and cookie cutterhousing developments became thenorm.

Restoration and retention of oldhomes and buildings was consid-ered old fashioned and outdatedthinking. We became a throw awaysociety and that included wherewe built and how. In many of thetowns we went through it’s amazingto see the difference in how theyfared depending on the develop-ment model they followed.

Towns such as Boise, Idaho, have managed to prevent the ugli-ness and costliness of urban sprawl.

With the recession taking aheavier toll in the U.S., it has takena bigger bite out of business andone of the most interesting phe-nomenons taking place there is therushing back to smallness. There

is a need to feel connected to yourneighbour and those who you dobusiness with. Strip malls are clos-ing and main street is coming backto life.

A great example is the littletown of Buffalo, Wyoming, whichwas the setting for a famous shootout in the book The Virginian. Ithad the classic main street with thegeneral store, pharmacy, hotel, etc.A place with covered sidewalks, you could look in the storefrontwindows and then go inside ifsomething caught your eye, or youcould sit outside on a bench andjust watch the world go by.

During the 1960s it caught thestrip-mine disease and suddenlybusinesses were everywhere butMain Street, which meant custom-ers were more inclined to go to amall than shop locally if they hadto get in their car anyway.

But businesses in Buffalo andother old west towns have had anepiphany and have started revital-izing Main Street. And now the oldneighbourhoods around them arecoming back to life. Young familiesare moving back to small townsfrom big cities to raise their fami-lies in safe, old fashioned places.

Because, in truth, everything oldis new again.

Towns taking step back intime to revitalize Main St.

Letters to the Editor

Editor:A long-standing history

of volunteer firemen inDelta came to an end ear-lier this month as Hall 4 inEast Delta finally closed itsdoors.

Growing up in EastDelta in the 1960s, I recallnearly all firefighters inDelta were volunteers, withfire halls in Beach Grove, downtown Ladner, EastDelta and North Delta.

Almost all volunteer fire-men at Hall 4 in East Deltawere farmers, and manysacrifices were made toattend calls, as often timesthe fire siren would go offin the middle of milking, orduring planting, harvestingor haying. They would dropeverything and race to thefire hall, often on their trac-

tors as the quickest meansof getting there.

The first fire hall in EastDelta came to be in 1958in a converted chicken barnbehind Doig’s store andEsso station at 96th Streetand Highway 10 (whereTim Hortons is today). Bythe mid-1960s, Hall 4, as itstands today, was built onHighway 10.

Many a young manin East Delta (includingmyself) joined up and wasproud to serve his commu-nity as a volunteer fireman.Practice night right to theend was always Wednesdaynights.

I take my hat off to themany East Delta fam-ily names that served in avolunteer capacity since1958 ... names such as

Embree, Huff, Cory, Davie,Weaver, Peterson, Lawrie,Kerr, Hendriksen, Kevlen,Thibaudier, Robertson,Terpsma, DeBoer and evena couple of Patons.

Biggest thank you of allgoes to Gordon Huff, whonow at age 88, was thevolunteer chief since the“chicken barn days” andtaught many a young buckhow to tie proper knots, how to drive a fire truckand work the pumps, andmost of all, how to usecommon sense to deal withfires and horrific MVAs onthe freeway and Highway10.

Also, many thanks tocurrent volunteer chiefKen Davie, as well asHarold Thibaudier and DonWiedenhammer, who hung

in there to the very end andkept Hall 4 going despitethe dwindling number ofvolunteers available.

I guess closing Hall 4 isa sign of the times, but weshould all remember thetime and contribution madeby hundreds of volunteerfiremen that served all cor-ners of Delta for so manyyears.

I am told that a grandfinal reunion of Hall 4 vol-unteer firefighters is beingheld on Saturday, Aug. 14at the East Delta Hall. Allpast members are welcome.

Letters to the Editor

Editor:Yet another Canada Day

is upon us and, after 143years as a geopoliticalentity in North America, the question of Canada’sidentity and substance asa mature nation remainsmore than ever on the frontburner of the Canadianexperience.

On a personal note, itwas a few days beforeCanada’s 90th birthday in1957, exactly 53 years ago, that this immigrant arrivedthrough the gates of Shed5 of the Port of Montrealto embark on his ownCanadian experience andjoin all those who had comebefore him and with him, ready to embrace Canadaas a new home and a newbeginning.

Intent on grasping theopportunities Canadaoffered to all those whowere prepared to relyon themselves and theirown efforts, those earliernewcomers regarded their

“landed immigrant” statusas a privilege, not a right,on the way to earning theirplace in Canadian societyand become full-fledgedand productive Canadiancitizens.

Having bidden good-byeto their native countries togive themselves and theirchildren a new life, andmaking learning Canada’slanguages of either Englishor French a foremost prior-ity as “New Canadians,”they brought with thema ready sense of loyaltyand commitment to theiradopted country, togetherwith their skills, craftsman-ship and personal desire tosucceed.

Nothing was handedto them. There were nofree lunches, no welfareprograms, no social safetynets, no ESL support, noexcuses for failure ... onlythe opportunity to prove tothemselves and to their newhome they were personallycapable of succeeding in a

country that was built onthe self-reliance and self-sacrifice of all those whohad come before them.

But now, some 50 yearslater, it is with a sense ofsadness and resignation thisimmigrant of old watcheswave after wave of newimmigrants who appearto want and expect to beaccorded all the rights andprivileges earned by earlierarrivals, without the atten-dant responsibilities andcommitments.

In a country where aCanadian passport has beenreduced to an instrument ofpersonal convenience andrequires the mere formalityof only three years of resi-dence to obtain and wheredual citizenship providesa guarantee of keeping thehome fires burning andremaining faithful to themother country, patriotismhas become a rare commod-ity on the part of present-day newcomers.

Letters to the Editor

Editor:I presume most

Canadians ponder the ques-tion of our national identityon Canada Day. The prob-lem is the term “identity”is a misnomer when weshould really be talkingabout unifying nationalexperiences.

It is probably astonishingto foreigners that Canadahas not fractured given thecomposition of its popula-tion and contrasting geog-raphy.

Yet our ancestors tamedthe wilderness, tilled the

soil, built cities, establishedlines of transportation andcommunication, enduredpenury, fought valiantly inworld wars and enjoyed aprosperous peace. Theseevents bonded practicallyall Canadians in the respec-tive contexts in which theyoccurred and left an indel-ible mark on the Canadianlandscape and psyche.

But now in this post-modern era with no morefrontiers to conquer thestate has become the com-mon denominator in thelives of Canadians. After

all, we have an absurd heri-tage department responsiblefor promoting our elusiveidentity.

I think it is dangerouswhen the government is thesole catalyst for nationalunity rather than the sponta-neous actions of the people.

Only the Canadianpeople can determine theauthenticity of their iden-tity if it is to withstand thetests of time. But unlike ourancestors, my generation’smark on history has yet tobe seen.

Linda Mallard, owner TWC

The TWC Studio is full of chatter asclients’ are gathering for their Pilatesclass. With only 4 people in a class, Ihave time to check in with each client. One client, waiting for a hip replace-ment, let’s me know that she’s par-ticularly sore today in her hip and back.Another is tight in her back with sometension radiating down her thigh. Thethird client has been sitting at a computerall morning. His neck feels tight and ithurts to turn his head. And the fourthclient says he’s feeling pretty good andwants to work hard today.

Time to begin our class. Lying downon a Reformer machine we begin withsome deep breaths. Client’s becomeaware of how their body feels. In prepa-ration for movement, they find theircomfortable posture, are reminded torelease tension in their body that doesn’tserve them and then to gently activatetheir deeper core muscles.

We begin to move. The spring basedequipment feels great. It is smooth andeasy on the joints. The muscles startto work. Body’s become warm and myclient’s breath coordinates with theirmovement. Core muscles are now work-ing well as clients move the many joints

in their body by stretching and strength-ening as they go. Tension is meltingaway and being replaced with strengthand control.

10 minutes into the class I walk quietlyup to each client and ask how their painlevel is:

“I feel great. My hip feels really good.Back pain is gone.”

“The tension in my back is gone. Itotally forgot that my back hurt when Icame in.”

“No headache here. Awesome.”

The client who wanted to work hardsays he’s feeling challenged.

Healing through movement is powerfulstuff.

There are days when both myself andmy team of instructors feel like heal-ers. And in some respects, I guess weare. Twenty-five years in this business,we’ve taken many courses to learn howto assess movement, posture and pre-scribe exercises to help heal. Over theyears we’ve developed an “intuition” ofreading our client’s bodies and can selectexercises that will help reduce pain, increase energy and improve function.

The class has ended and faces are bright, bodies are tall and strong and everyone isready to get on with their day.

“Incredible”, they say. “I always feelso much better after a Pilates class andthat’s why I always look forward to com-ing. Thank-you!”

I respond with “You are welcome. Ithas been my pleasure.” And I move ontothe next round of classes or private ses-sions, knowing that within one hour of aclient coming in our door, he or she willfeel 100% better when they leave. Nowthat’s a rewarding day!

Practice Pilates this summer and discov-er for yourself how Pilates WILL increaseyour energy by reducing pain and improv-ing your strength and mobility.

Research this year has left no doubt thatVitamin D deficiency - which affects 97%of Canadians in winter - is nothing lessthan a Canadian crisis and world wideproblem.

Dr. William Grant (www. sunarc.org)calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiencyto be no less than $9 billion annually.

A Creighton University study this yearshowed that people rich in Vitamin D haveup to a 77% lower overall cancer risk.

In September the Canadian PediatricSociety recommended that pregnantwomen consult their physicians aboutgetting 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10times the current government recommen-

The Canadian Cancer Society has calledfor all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. ofVitamin D daily.

The key message the Vitamin D Societywants Canadians to receive is: that we areat risk of Vitamin D deficiency becauseof our country’s relatively weak sunshinemost of the year and the fact that VitaminD is rare in diet.

With thanks to the Vitamin D Society forthis info, who incidentally recommendsasking your doctor for an annual blood testto check your Vitamin D levels. OptimalVitamin D blood levels are 50ng/ml(125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.

The bulbs we use at Hawaiian BeachTanning Salon can, in most cases, give youthis optimum level of Vitamin D.

The work party included (from left) Sieg and Sandra Gebhardt(kneeling), president Larry Rossiter, Keith Anderson, Jim Matson, Colin Haskins, Jim Henderson,Graham Parker and Karel Ley. Kiwanis club members did this task in honour of member MikeSawka, who passed away June 1.

A recent three-perfor-mance run of the UnitedEntertainers’ Once Upona Time, Happily NeverAfter raised a record-set-ting $2,600 for the DeltaHospice Society.

“Thank you to everyonewho came out to take in oneof the shows,” said organiz-er Ted Hubert of the musi-cal parody of several classicand modern fairy talesstaged in April at GenesisTheatre. “We were over-whelmed with the responseand look forward to nextyear’s production.”

Nancy Macey, execu-tive director of the DeltaHospice Society, was grate-ful to the group for its gen-erous donation.

“The United Entertainersshould be commended ontheir ability to entertainand appeal to such a broadaudience,” Macey said.“Congratulations on a won-derful performance and aheartfelt thank you for thetremendous fundraising

efforts.”The United Entertainers

began in 1999, under thedirection of Ross Laidley,as a way to raise moneyfor local charities. Duringthe past eight years, over$22,000 has been donatedto many worthy causes.

Birthday gift for school!

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Students at Boundary Bay Montessori House on 72nd Street in Ladner climb to new heights cel-ebrating the school’s 20th birthday with the opening of their new playground earlier this month.

Over 100 students atTsawwassen’s Ecole SouthPark Elementary spent thespring planting, tendingand harvesting seed-raisedorganic vegetables inpots through the school’sPortable Garden Project.

The project is a the resultof a partnership betweenthe parent advisory council, teachers and the schooladministration all workingtogether to realize an out-door classroom experiencefor students from kindergar-ten through Grade 4.

“This project demon-strates the tremendouscapacity we have in ourschools to build parent-school partnerships thatenhance student learning,”says Bob Thompson, SouthPark’s vice-principal andleader of the garden projectcommittee.

The project is founded in

research that shows prima-ry-age children that growtheir own food are morelikely to make fresh, wholefood choices when they areolder and eating indepen-dently. Working with teach-ers to foster Ministry ofEducation learning objec-tives in the areas of life sci-ence and social studies, theproject also takes studentsthrough concepts such asecosystem definitions, plantbiology, insect lifecyclesand sustainable agriculturalpractices.

Weekly hands-on teach-ing sessions have includeda “salad celebration” daywhere students harvest thelettuce they have grownand make a salad to sharewith their class. One classis growing heritage wheatfrom seed and will harvestit to make flour in the fall.

“The project is designed

to encourage students totake ownership of their gar-den space and responsibilityfor the food they are grow-ing,” says Peg Keenleyside, the project facilitator whobrought the idea to the par-ent advisory council lastyear.

Each student in the pro-gram begins with their ownpot of either peas, beans, carrots, lettuce or toma-toes and gets to take theirpot home with them afterschool is out in June tocontinue growing their veg-etables through the summer.

“The more personal thegardening experience isfor a child, the more likelythey are to maintain aninterest in the outcome andretain the science lessonsthey have learned,” saysKeenleyside, a South Parkparent with two primary-age children.

I still don’t get it — thepajamas-in-public thing.

It’s been going on foryears, of course. I thinkit was, oh, seven or eightyears ago when I firstnoticed that the pajamas-in-public was a happeningthing. I’d looked out thewindow and seen peoplewalking down the street— mostly female, mostlyteenaged — wearing whatyou’d normally wear to bed.

“Hey!” I remember call-ing to my husband. “Thereare three girls walkingdown the street in paja-mas!”

My husband took a look.My husband raised his eye-brows.

We told ourselves that itwas probably Grade NinePajama Day. That was theanswer, we said.

The next day, however,

we noticed them again. Butthis time, eight girls. All inflannel PJs.

“Maybe it’s Grade NinePajama Week,” I said. “OrPajama Month.”

Turns out it wasn’t GradeNine Pajama Week, or evenGrade Nine Pajama Month.

I began to see people— mostly female, mostlyteenaged — wearing paja-mas on the bus. At thebank. In the book store. Inthe supermarket.

“Maybe they’re just toostrapped for time in themorning to change,” I toldmy husband. “Or maybethey’re just too busy towash their jeans. Poor kidstoday. They just face somany demands.”

“Weird,” said my hus-band. “In my day, we worejeans even when they weredirty.”

Fast-forward seven oreight years, and still, they’reout there.

And no, I still don’t getit.

“Here’s the thing,” I saidto the husband. “You seethem in pajamas, but you

never see them wearingnightgowns. Or bathrobes.Or slippers. Why aren’t theywearing slippers?”

My husband shrugged. He’d long since given uprunning to the windowevery time I hollered apajama alert.

“Slippers wouldn’t begood outside,” he pointedout. “They’re not built forsidewalks.”

“True enough,” I said.“But why be selective aboutthe sleep attire?”

The husband shrugged.Again. Two more girlsambled down the streetwearing you-know-what.

“You know,” he said,“you should go out and askthem.”

“I couldn’t do that!” Isaid. “It would make melook so old!”

The husband looked atme. I knew what he wasthinking.

Sure, I’ll ask them oneday soon, but I’ll have tolook the part.

Let’s just say I’ll headoutside, but I won’t bewearing jeans.

The storied NHL franchise selectedthe 18-year-old from Tsawwassen in theseventh round (182nd overall) of lastSaturday’s Entry Draft.

“We have some fans now,” laughedNicholls who grew up in Canuck crazyhousehold.

“I really didn’t know what to expect(going into the draft) and kept an openmind about it. It was hard not gettingcaught up in the excitement once it gotgoing (on Saturday) but it felt like it tookforever before I heard my name.”

Nicholls enjoyed a solid sophomoreseason with the Western Hockey League’s

Saskatoon Blades. The smooth-skatingcentre doubled his point production, fin-ishing with 48 points, including 18 goals. He added five assists in 10 playoff gamesand saw his final NHL Central ScoutingBureau ranking jump from 128 to 93among North American skaters.

Nicholls had an extended interview witha Maple Leafs scout midway through lastseason but it was another team that showedthe most interest leading up to last week-end.

“I was interviewed by Calgary a coupleof times,” said Nicholls who watched thedraft unfold with the rest of his family onthe NHL Network but was also was scram-bling to the computer to keep up with thefast-moving selections.

The Leafs would like to see Nichollsbulk up his 6-foot-2 frame to prepare forthe next step of his career.

“Josh is a very good skater and anotherguy who is underdeveloped physically,”

said Dave Morrison, the Leafs director ofamateur scouting. “He has good offensiveskills and is a two-way player who I thinkhas top six or bottom six potential.

“Josh still has some work to do but webelieve he is the type of kid who will putin the time and effort in Saskatoon.”

Nicholls has been working out at home, including on ice sessions with skatinginstructor Derek Popke. He is expectedto attend a Leafs orientation camp thencontinue his preparation to make an evengreater impact with the Blades next season.

“I’m suddenly going to be one of theolder guys they will be counting on evenmore,” he said.

“Other than getting used to the coldwinters, it’s been a great experience inSaskatoon. I have a great billet family andmy all-round game has improved a lot. With (Head coach) Lorne Molleken, youhave to come prepared to work at everypractice.”

Gallagher adds Montrealto his busy travel plansCanadiens select Tsawwassen forward in 5th roundafter breakout campaign with the Vancouver Giants

Brendan Gallagher will be jetting backand forth across the country this summerand he doesn’t mind it one bit.

Two weeks after learning he had beeninvited to the National Junior Team JuniorTeam Development Camp in St. John’sNewfoundland, the 18-year-old fromTsawwassen was selected in the fifth roundof Saturday’s NHL Entry Draft by theMontreal Canadians.

That means the Vancouver Giantsstandout will be heading to Montreal onFriday to attend a three-day rookie camp. There should be another trip east for theCanadians main camp in September.

Gallagher enjoyed a breakthroughsophomore season in the Western HockeyLeague, racking up 81 points, including ateam-leading 41 goals. The feisty 5-foot-8winger also ranked third with 111 penaltyminutes and delivered in the playoffs with21 points in 16 games this spring.

Still, there was enough questions abouthis lack of size for the NHL CentralScouting Bureau to list him 174th amongNorth American skaters in their finalrankings. With European prospects also

factored in, it meant there would be no cer-tainty Gallagher would be drafted despiteRogers Sportsnet ranking him number oneamong their sleeper picks.

That’s why the former South DeltaStorm Bantam standout and his familytook a low key approach to the weekendproceedings.

Gallagher watched the second day ofdraft coverage on the NHL Network withhis mom and sister while his dad andbrother were at a hockey tournament inCalgary. He had also promised to attend abirthday party of a young heart transplantsurvivor.

“It’s a good thing I got drafted beforeround five because I wasn’t going tobe home for the final two rounds,” helaughed. “I didn’t have a lot of expecta-tions going into it but of course I’m veryexcited now and what lies ahead.”

The Canadiens and the Phoenix Coyoteswere the two teams to show the most inter-est in him.

“The same scout who took me out forlunch was the first one to call and congrat-ulate me,” said Gallagher. “From a (Giants)perspective, I wished things would havegone a little better but, for me, I wouldhave to say it was a pretty successful year.”

Islanders aim for 4th placeafter sweeping Island trip

Just days after it appearedthe Delta Islanders werelooking ahead to 2011, theyproduced two of their big-gest wins of the year to setup an interesting finish tothe B.C. Junior “A” LacrosseLeague regular season.

The Islanders partedways with veterans CarltonSchuss, Robbie Campbelland Jamal Allen in separatetransactions last week.

Campbell was dealt tothe Coquitlam Adanacs forrookie Cody Craven and afirst round pick in the 2011midget draft.

Schuss and Allen arenow members of theCalgary Raiders. The tradeoffered little in return to theIslanders but does establish apotential talent pipeline withtheir Alberta neighbour.

Schuss also gets betterexposure to the CalgaryRoughnecks who selectedhim in last year’s NLL Draft.

The Islanders were com-ing off disappointing lossesto Coquitlam (20-9) andNew West (6-4), leavingthem a combined 0-8 againstthe teams top three teams.

“It was just time,” saidgeneral manager and headcoach Greg Rennie of themoves. “The record speaksfor itself and we needed tomake a change.

“At practice, the firstthing the guys wanted toknow were we throwing inthe towel on the season? This was not only about get-ting younger but also gettingbetter in the long run. Codygives us a right-hander that

we desperately need and weare ecstatic to be gettinganother first round pick.”

The Islanders respondedto the major shake-up witha 7-6 win in Nanaimo onFriday, then a come-from-behind 11-9 victory overthe Victoria ShamrocksSaturday.

The results leaves Deltawith an 8-10 record headinginto tonight’s home gameagainst the Langley Knightsat 8 p.m.. The locals alsohost Naniamo on Saturday(5 p.m.) and then closeout the regular season atBurnaby on Sunday.

They have an excellentchance to move up to fourthin the league standingswhich would likely set-up anopening round playoff seriesagainst Burnaby with homefloor advantage.

Craven’s first goal as anIslander, midway through thethird period, proved to be the

game winner in Nanaimo.Nathan Clare and RyanKeith each scored twice.

On Saturday in theprovincial capital, LoganSchuss’ hat trick goal tiedthe game at 9-9 and set thestage for Keith’s game win-ner 82 seconds later to pick-up a rare two points from theShamrocks.

Schuss finished with sixpoints, while Keith alsorecorded a hat trick. MikeMallory added two goals andfour assists. Berekoff scoredonce and set-up three others.Blake Duncan was terrificin net for the second straightgame with 29 saves.

Boxla bits ...Rennie remained busy on

the trading front Monday, finalizing a deal with thePoCo Saints that will seethree of their top scorersand an elite defender cometo Delta for cash and fourmidget draft prospects.
