A reward is being offered, andsome new information is comingto light, in the case of the stolengolden eagle.
Ron Shore, who owns themulti-million dollar statue, isoffering a $10,000 reward for
information that leads to itsreturn. He confirmed that it iscurrently valued at $7 millionCAD.
The statue was stolen ataround 10 p.m. on May 29 inthe 4700-block of 57th Street inLadner. Police this week con-firmed they are looking for twosuspects and two vehicles in the
case, a black or dark blue largeSUV, similar to a GMC Yukon,and a smaller red or burgundySUV, similar to a Hyundia SantaFe.
Shore said he was approachedas he was walking to his car. Hesaid he was hit over the headbefore a suspect grabbed the bagcontaining the statue and a sec-
ond bag containing a decoy.He said he gave chase and
was dragged several metres aftergrabbing onto the suspect’s car.
Det. Brad Cooper said investi-gators are still reviewing witnessstatements and surveillancefootage. Anyone with any infor-mation is asked to call police at604-946-4411.

Tsawwassen Mills is rap-idly taking shape.
Set to open in just underfour months, the destina-tion shopping mall at theTsawwassen First Nationwill be a centre that caneasily be described asunique in B.C.
Tsawwassen Millsgeneral manager MarkFenwick and developmentdirector Jeff Brown gavetheOptimist a tour lastweek of the 1.2-million-square-foot mall, whichwill feature 200 stores,including 16 anchor ten-ants. Many of the retailerswill be making their firstappearance in B.C.
For years, tenant newshad been limited to BassPro Shops until Saks OFF5TH and Designer ShoeWarehouse announcedthey would also be locat-ing at the mall. Morerecently, the names of acouple dozen retailers
were made public, includ-ing what will be Canada’slargest Nike Factory Store.
“We’ll be announcingmore tenants this summerand we’re pleased with themix that we’ve achieved,”said Fenwick.
Located at the cor-ner of Highway 17 and52nd Street, the IvanhoeCambridge project will bemostly a fashion-orientedcentre with a mix of outletand other retailers, but itwill also have a wide rangeof other products and ser-vices.
In addition to shopping,it will have an 1,100-seatfood hall (they’re not call-ing it a food court) andfull-service restaurantsMilestones Grill & Bar andMontana’s Bar & Grill.Other features of the mallinclude a children’s playarea and space wherehusbands can watch sport-ing events on big screenswhile their wives shop.
“We want to make thisa shopping experiencewhere there’s somethingfor everyone,” addedFenwick.
The mall is scheduled toopen Wednesday, Oct. 5.
It’s based on the compa-ny’s huge CrossIron Millsmall outside of Calgaryand VaughanMills in theGreater Toronto area.
Interior construction iswell underway and ten-ants have started to takepossession of their spacesto work on their uniquefinishes. Wood and metalpaneling is being installedwhile the mall floor, whichwill be mostly high-endhardwood, has alreadybeen installed. On the
outside, facades are nowbeing installed.
Coast Salish native art-work, featuring contribu-tions frommembers ofthe TFN, including ChiefBryce Williams, will beprevalent throughout thecomplex.
The mall has createdaround 2,000 constructionjobs and 4,500 perma-nent jobs will be availableonce it opens. A job fair isplanned for June 25 and26 in Vancouver, althoughsome retailers havealready listed job postings.
Separated by a newroad called Canoe PassWay, Tsawwassen Millswill have TsawwassenCommons as a neighbour.That 550,000-square-footoutdoor mall will feature100 or so retailers, includ-ing Rona, Canadian Tireand Walmart. Some of thebuildings are well under-way, while work recentlybegan on the Walmartsite. It is also scheduled toopen in October.

1700-block of 55th Street:Complainant arrivedhome to find the residenceransacked. Entry to theresidence appeared to bethrough a patio door butno signs of damage to thedoor. Forensic identifica-tion officers attendedand processed the scene.Incident still under inves-tigation.
• June 2, 9 a.m., 500-block of English BluffRoad: Complainantreported that sometimeovernight someone brokeinto his trailer parked inthe driveway. Investigationby police found all threelatches cut with bolt cut-ters. Nothing stolen butdamage to trailer approxi-mately $100.
• June 3, 2:10 p.m.,1200-block of 56th Street:An employee of a busi-ness observed a femaleload strawberries, nec-tarines and a watermeloninto a vehicle and leavewithout paying. Policeprovided with the vehi-cle license plate numberand a description of thesuspect. The vehicle wastraced to the owner whoclaimed he lent the vehiclebut refused to give anyfurther information. Thesame female is suspectedof stealing liquor from anearby business. Incidentis still under investigation.
• June 5, 5:59 p.m., 1000-block of 54A Street: Policereceived a report from theoccupant of an apartmentthat a young female hadbroken into her apart-ment. Police attendedand confirmed there wasno break in but that thecomplainant appears besuffering from dementia.Police to make a referral toSouth Delta Mental Healthin order to get the assess-ment process started.
• June 5, 2:27 p.m., 1400-block of View Crescent:Complainant reported shehad left her residence forabout an hour and whenshe returned she foundthe entire house had beenransacked. The suspectsentered the residencethrough an upper rearpatio door that was acci-dentally left open by theowner. Forensic officersattended and processed
the scene. Still underinvestigation.
• June 5, 8:40 a.m.,1600-block of 56th Street:Complainant reported sheleft her vehicle parked ina back handicap stall andwhen she returned to thevehicle she found the gascover open and the gassyphoned from the vehi-cle.
LADNER• May 30, 8:12 p.m.,
4600-block of ClarenceTaylor Crescent:Employees of the leisurecentre reported two lock-ers had been pried openand two patrons had theirpossessions stolen. Itemsstolen from one patroninclude his wallet contain-ing personal and bankcards. Police to examinevideo surveillance in anattempt to identify thesuspects.
• June 2, 6:39 a.m., 4900-block of Linden Drive:Complainant reported hispickup parked in front of aresidence had been stolen.No one has permission todrive the vehicle and nospare key was left in thetruck. Details of the truckentered in the police infor-mation database.
• June 3, 9:51 a.m., 5200-block of Central Avenue:Complainant reportedhis trailer was brokeninto sometime overnight.Suspects cut the latch andstole tools and other items.The bicycle appears tohave been used to trans-
port the goods and waslater located by the owner.Canvass of the neighbour-hood negative.
• June 2, 8:43 p.m., 5200-block of Central Avenue:Having been informed bya neighbour that she hadbeen the victim of a breakand enter in her shed, thecomplainant discoveredshe had also been a victim.The suspects removed aBMX bike and a gardenwagon from the shed.Both items were recovereddown the garden path sev-eral metres from the shed.Police suspect the itemswere used to transportstolen goods from otherbreak-ins.
• June 3, 6:20 p.m.,5400-block of River Road:Complainants left theirresidence for the day andwhen they returned theyfound they were the vic-tims of a break and enter.The suspects enteredthrough a sliding glassdoor that had been leftajar but secured with awooden dowel. Forensicteam attended to processthe scene.
• June 3, 10:23 a.m., 53rdStreet: Real estate agentsadvised police that severalof their signs along thestreet were spray paintedovernight. Police attendedand found eight signs hadthe faces of the agentssprayed over with a circleand two lines coming outof the head like antennas.Photographs taken as evi-dence.

Delta is taking a hardline on medical marijuanadispensaries.
Civic politicians recentlyupheld the denial of abusiness licence for adispensary that has beenoperating on Scott Roadin North Delta. Followingthe decision last week,the municipality issued astatement saying: “Deltawill take all necessarysteps, up to and includingfiling court injunctions,to prohibit medical mari-huana dispensaries, untillegally permitted by theGovernment of Canada.”
The municipal-ity received a businesslicence application fromWeeMedical DispensarySociety on May 3. Theapplication stated theintent of the business wasto provide medical can-nabis and other natural
health care services.Hugh Davies, Delta’s
manager of property useand compliance, toldDelta council he visitedthe business two dayslater.
“There was marijuanavisibly available in thedisplay cases along withmarijuana edibles andsmoking pipes, T-shirtsand other materials forsale,” Davies told councillast week.
He added the buildinginspector cited a numberof building code deficien-cies and issued a stopwork order.
Davies said he thensent a letter to MayJoan Liu, director of theWeeMedical DispensarySociety, advising her the“activities taking place arecontrary to the ControlledDrug and Substances Actof Canada and that theCorporation of Delta doesnot issue business licences
to unlawful businesses.”Delta’s zoning bylaws
also prohibit medical mar-ijuana production.
A bylaw inspector hasbeen visiting the site ona daily basis to issue aticket and fine as longas the business contin-ues to operate. The fineswere initially $200 a day,however, amendmentsto the business licencebylaw approved later inMay increased the fines to$1,000 a day.
Liu appeared beforecouncil last Monday tourge civic politicians toapprove the businesslicence.
“Since the federalgovernment has alreadyannounced that they aredecriminalizing the useof marijuana and willbe setting regulations inspring of 2017, allowingWeeMedical to continueoperating will be consid-ered a progressive step
forward in the direction ofthe future and not back-wards where the only wayto access medical mari-juana for most people in inthe streets where they putthemselves in danger insome cases,” Liu stated ina letter to Delta.
Liu said the store willcontinue to operate and isfighting the fines in court.
“We just hope that wecan stay open as long aswe can because we feelwe’re offering a service thecommunity wants,” shesaid.
WeeMedical alreadyoperates dispensaries inseveral locations in theprovince.
“The reports are that itis fairly busy at that store,”Davies said of the NorthDelta location.
Liu confirmed thatsince opening in April, theNorth Delta location hasmore than 500 membersregistered.

Somemajor changes arecoming to improve trafficflow on the Alex FraserBridge, changes that mightalso help ease driversuffering at the GeorgeMassey Tunnel.
The four-lane tunnelhas had a counterflowsystem for decades, whichincreases the number oflanes northbound andsouthbound from two tothree during rush hour.
That same idea is nowbeing contemplated forthe Alex Fraser, whichturns 30 this year and hasseen volumes increasesharply in recent years.
It’s part of a series ofimprovements provincialTransportation MinisterTodd Stone announcedonWednesday in Delta tohelp unclog congestion onthe bridge and Highway91.
Stone said the provincewill introduce a systemthat will provide travelinformation for the vari-ous Fraser River crossingsat key decision points somotorists can adjust theirroutes.
It will also kick in anextra $10 million for aninterchange at Highway 91and 72nd Avenue, whichwould bring the provincialcontribution to a total of$20 million for the $30million project.
Other changes includemore tow truck standbyareas and increasing thefrequency of highwaypatrols. The province willalso continue to work withthe federal governmentand Port of Vancouver toadvance new interchangesat Nordel and Sunbury in
the areas of highways 91and 17.
During peak periodsnow, demand on the AlexFraser exceeds capacityand results in queues oftwo to three kilometresand delays of up to 30minutes, and in excess oftwo to three hours whenthere’s a traffic incident,said Stone.
As far as how a counter-flow system would workon the Alex Fraser, whichhas three lanes in bothdirections, Delta NorthMLA Scott Hamilton said
a number of ideas will beexplored, including add-ing a seventh lane on thebridge by removing theraised curb on both sides.
“That lane could thenserve as a counter-flowlane. It wouldn’t affect thesidewalks because they arecantilevered, they basicallyhang off the edge. It wouldbe a destination lane, thetype of lane where onceyou’re in it, you’re com-mitted to going a certainroute like the East-WestConnector,” he said.
Hamilton noted it could
alleviate traffic elsewhere,including the tunnel,because drivers oftenchoose a “path of leastresistance” on their com-mute.
“Traffic is like water.People will take whatthey think is the easiestand quickest path to theirdestination and trafficusually has a breaking inperiod. When you look atthe initial lane closures atthe Pattullo Bridge, thingshave settled down quiteconsiderably. People areexercising other options
and two-thirds of thediverted traffic from thePattullo is actually tak-ing the (tolled) Port Man(Bridge),” he added.
According to the prov-ince, Highway 91 supportsapproximately 8,000 to9,000 vehicles per hour inpeak periods. This trafficis comprised of approxi-mately six per cent trucks.
During a recent Deltacouncil meeting, civicpoliticians lamented theincreased traffic on theAlex Fraser that’s beenexacerbated by construc-tion work at the Pattullo,reiterating a call to toll allcrossings.
“Might as well put onyour tunes, because that’swhat you’ll be listening tofor two hours,” remarkedMayor Lois Jackson.
Engineering directorSteven Lan noted it allpoints to the fragility of thesystem and dependenceon the bridges.

St. David’s parish inTsawwassen will mark theQueen’s 90th birthday thisSunday when it holds itsfifth annual Big Lunch ona date within the UK’s offi-cial three-day celebrationof the Queen’s April 21birthdate.

Greg, and we believe his pregnant girlfriend, were brought into a local veterinaryclinic as strays. The clinic contacted us and we took them both in. Greg was severelythin, probably sharing most of his food with the expected mommy. Being brought inas a stray means that we don’t have too much history on Greg but due to his sweetnature we believe he was probably owned or exposed to people. Greg is a chattyboy who loves attention and takes full advantage of his two square meals a day.Greg is really easy going and would likely be fine in a home with another cat orkids. We are unsure how he would be with dogs but may be ok with a cat-savvycalm dog. We believe he would be okay with either an indoor or indoor/outdoorhome. Come meet this goofy boy!

Times are certainly changingacross the highway, but itremains to be seen whetherthat will also be the case inthe town core.
In less than four months, themega malls at the Tsawwassen FirstNation— the 1.2-million-square-foot Tsawwassen Mills and the550,000-square-foot TsawwassenCommons— are scheduled to opentheir doors to usher in a new retail erain South Delta. The malls, particularlyTsawwassen Mills, are banking onattracting customers from throughoutthe region and beyond, but you can betlocal shoppers will be prime targets.
There has been much talk, andsome amount of action, about howthe existing commercial cores will co-exist with these new retail behemoths,but perhaps the most interesting, tosay nothing of controversial, responseinvolves the Century Group’s proposedredevelopment of the TsawwassenTown Centre Mall. The outdated mallwould be in line for an overhaul regard-less of the pending competition, but theprospect of having 300 shiny new storesacross the way certainly makes redevel-opment a greater priority.
There are those people that contendCentury Group president Sean Hodginsis using the necessity to revitalizeTsawwassen’s business district as lever-age to increase density on the 10-acresite, and while there’s some validity tothat line of thought, anyone who thinksthat mall doesn’t require a significantfacelift isn’t living in today’s reality.
Much of the proposal sounds similarto the Oliva building at the north end ofthe mall, which has retail on the groundfloor and condos above, and given theEarth remained on its axis after it wasbuilt almost a decade ago, it’s hard tosee too much in the way of oppositionbeing mounted to more of the same.
However, the sticking point will bethe highrise, anywhere from 12 to 20storeys, that’s included in a proposalthat’s to be submitted to municipalhall next month. There’s a definite linein sand in these parts when it comesto building heights and the numbersbeing bandied about by Century are atleast double the point where opponentsbegin to set their hair on fire.
It’s almost as if a highrise is the tip-ping point where Tsawwassen stopsbeing a small town. Mind you, if youlook across the highway, that’s alreadyhappening.
Changesallaround
Last time we left theDelta Museum’s historyat the official open-ing by Premier W.A.C.Bennett on Nov. 10,
1969. Thereafter the operation,management, staffing and profileof the museum was undertakenby the non-profit society assistedby a plethora of local volunteers.
At the outset the museum wasopen to the public three daysper week plus limited time onSaturdays. Exhibits were builtdisplaying home furnishingsof a bygone era, an Indian arti-fact room, a display exhibitingmechanical items and a historyroom depicting the developmentof the area.
As with all non-profit socie-ties, raising money was an ongo-ing topic and remains so today.Methods now in place such as giftshops, participation in communi-ty events, a telethon and outrightappeals to the public and busi-ness communities had originsmore than half a century past.
With the benefits of local fun-draising, provincial and federalgrants, and annual grant requestsof Delta council, in due coursethe society was able to hire pro-fessional staff to meet exactingmuseum standards.
A decade after its official open-ing, and on the eve of Delta’s100th birthday on Nov 10, 1979,the museum opened its archivesfor the preservation and publicdisplay of manuscripts, photo-graphs, family history and munic-ipal records.
Further space was requiredin the basement of the “old”municipal hall in Ladner, usurp-ing hobby groups and the Deltapolice for this purpose.
The glaring weakness of annualgrants created instability in careerexpectations for professionalstaff. There was unease of tenureand guarantee of grant funding.A turnover of eight curators andeight archivists occurred in thefirst 20 years.
Some local names from that listworth remembering include theaforementioned volunteer MaryBrown, Michael Duncan andDaphne Savage who assumed thetitle of curator, and in many waysfounders of the museum’s highprofessional standards.
In 1984 financial matters cameto a head with Delta council dur-ing the museum’s annual grantapplication prompted by a 20 percent increase in funding after noincrease granted in precedingyears. As one who was present atthe council table during this criti-
cal moment, the outcome fromthe ensuing discussion improvedthe museum’s financial stability.
Curator Daphne Savage, presi-dent Dorothy Brown and pastpresident Matthew Rogers madeit very clear that if the grantincrease was not approved byDelta, thus permitting competi-tive salaries for professional staff,lack of funding would close themuseum’s doors, notwithstand-ing countless hours of volunteerservices and the society’s accessto external funding.
A council motion unani-mously passed the grant requestand future museum fundingwas included in Delta’s generalmunicipal budget, not handled asa grant application. Until recentlythe museum has been operatingon a five-year operating agree-ment.
In 2015 Delta approachedthe museum’s board of trusteesregarding a relocation opportu-nity and a new governance modelwhereby the Corporation of Deltaassumes operations and becomesthe employer of all museum andarchives staff and the society willcarry on in its capacity as a non-profit society and owner of allartifacts and materials.
This model has been approvedby the society at a special generalmeeting. The new facility will beunveiled in 2017 and a new erabegins.

ers, planners or engineersplease explain the rea-soning behind the messthey’ve made of both 56thand 52nd streets?
We used to be able toaccess Highway 17 fromboth lanes on 56th Streetwithout having to changelanes. The inside lanesplit for those wishingto go across Highway 17into Ladner or to turn lefttowards the ferry, but italso continued to Highway17.
With the new configu-ration, traffic must be inthe outside lane on 56thStreet to access Highway17. Traffic in the insidelane must move right intothe outside lane. The out-side lane then splits intotwo lanes and once onHighway 17, traffic in theoutside lane must mergeleft as the lane they’veturned into disappears.
They have created twopinch points that will slowtraffic and create possibleaccident points where
there was previously noproblem. They have madetwo lanes turning left so, Iassume the planners thinkthat in spite of the futurepopulation increase, moretraffic will be headingtowards the malls and fer-ries than to Vancouver,Richmond, Surrey, NorthDelta, NewWestminster,the U.S. border, Burnaby,etc. What statistics didthey use to come up withthis plan?
It’s no better at 52ndStreet. They could havehad two lanes fromHighway 17 southboundat least up to TsawwassenSprings. Instead they leftsouthbound traffic withone lane and decided thatnorthbound there wouldbe a left turn lane, a rightturn lane and two lanesgoing across Highway 17,one of those lanes dedi-cated for the newmalls.
They also decided tothrow a few feet of dedi-cated bicycle lane north-bound just before theintersection. From thedesign, cyclists are expect-
ed to ride down the side-walk until approximately50 feet from the intersec-tion, where the bike lanesuddenly appears. Troubleis, even the sidewalkdoesn’t go all the way up52nd Street so northboundcyclists must first ride onroads with no dedicatedbike lane, move onto thesidewalk and just beforethe Highway 17 intersec-tion move into a dedicatedbike lane. All seems ratherconvoluted to me.
I assume these are thesame people who built theSouth Fraser PerimeterRoad with curves incor-rectly banked and also thesame people who expectdropping a 10-lane bridgeinto the middle of a four-lane highway will alleviatetraffic congestion.
I question their compe-tency and/or the qualityof their education andtraining unless, of course,one of these professionalscould explain the reason-ing behind these deci-sions.

councillors in Richmonddid — turn it into a cashcow for developers withno regard whatsoever towhat the people wanted.Now Richmond is aboundwith highrises that arehalf empty and bought byspeculators.
What with the megamalls already underdevelopment on theTsawwassen First Nationlands we have to face thepossibility of yet anothershopping mall. Howmany
local stores do we have todestroy to bring in moreWalmarts and the like?
Where can we go toescape this desecration ofwhat is good?
Instead of copyingRichmond’s pattern, howabout U.K.’s and build littleclusters of bungalows forseniors wanting to down-size? We all know why thiswould never happen hereas it’s all about the money.

Trust, in my opinion,is the most valuable busi-ness commodity and thefirst step in earning trustis to listen. This is why theB.C. Lottery Corporationis inviting several localgovernments south of theFraser River to take part inour expression of interestprocess. We want to gaugewhether their communi-ties would be interested inhosting a gaming facility.
You may recall the Cityof Surrey voted by a slimmargin against hosting acasino in South Surrey in
2013. So why are we doingthis again? First of all,we respect the authorityof local governments todetermine whether theywant a facility in theircommunity; however, wecan’t ignore market oppor-tunities, particularly giventhe pace of growth in theregion.
Furthermore, this isn’tjust about one city — theidentified market we areconsidering for a poten-tial new gaming facilityincludes Delta and theTsawwassen First Nationas well.
We’ve monitored themarketplace in the southof Fraser region and havewatched the populationgrow and change the lastseveral years. There iscurrently one bingo halland one casino with aracetrack that serve theidentified market withinthe region.
The recent improve-ments and re-branding ofFraser Downs as ElementsCasino by our serviceprovider, Great CanadianGaming, have proved suc-cessful to date. We now
have a much better casinoentertainment destinationin the Cloverdale towncentre.
However, our marketanalysis indicates thereis still an underservedmarket for gaming enter-tainment in thenorthern and west-ern parts of thesouth of the Fraserregion. In order tobetter serve ourcustomers, it’simportant that weconsider providinga variety of enter-tainment options that areaccessible.
The samemarketplaceassessment also foundthe incremental revenuepotential of a new gam-bling facility is estimatedto be between $25 mil-lion and $50 million. Asthe organization that isaccountable for generatingnet income to support thepublic good, we have tocontinually look for oppor-tunities to provide greatgaming entertainment foradults while encourag-ing responsible gamblingbehaviour.
With programs likeBCLC’s GameSense andthe province’s Responsibleand Problem GamblingProgram, we’ve demon-strated that gaming can bedelivered responsibly, andwith the right programs in
place for thosewho may needthem.
In addition,we collaboratewith communi-ties to ensurewe are acceptedas part of theirdevelopment
plan for entertainment,jobs and non-tax revenue.Local governments share10 per cent of the net gam-ing income generated bya facility in their commu-nity. A new facility couldgenerate about $1.5 mil-lion to $3 million annuallyfor the host community.That is on top of the well-paying jobs a potentialfacility would bring to theregion.
BCLC is committed to aclear, transparent process.We’re asking communitiesto consider how a gam-ing facility might fit theirdevelopment plans, andlistening to their feedback.We will only considermoving to the next phase ifone or more local govern-ments express interest.
If more than one localgovernment expressesinterest, we will select onebased on the submissionsand with the support of athird-party fairness moni-tor. When we do that, theodds are in favour of theright outcome, whateverthat might be.Jim Lightbody is presi-

The LadnerVillage Marketkicks off its20th season onSunday.
“It’s grown beauti-fully. It’s hard to believeit’s 20 years,” says TraceyMcKnight, one of the mar-ket organizers.
The open-air marketspans three blocks on 48thAvenue from Elliott Streetto Delta Street and fea-tures vendors, local mer-chants and live outdoorentertainment. It drawsbig crowds to Ladner
Village and takes placeseven times, rain or shine,throughout the season.
Market dates fall onthe second and fourthSundays of the monthalong with a single date inSeptember. Markets runfrom 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
McKnight, involved asan organizer for 18 yearsalong with her husbandBill, says it has evolvedinto a well-respected mar-ket throughout the LowerMainland.
In 2000 the marketadopted a “make it, bakeit, grow it” guidance policyfor new vendors.
“It changed the feel of
the market a little bit,” shesays, noting it meant noresale or wholesale prod-ucts.
Shoppers can expect tosee items like plants, jew-elry, art, photography andfabric along with a varietyof food products.
Each market gets a freshfeel to it as vendors comein and out throughout theseason. Over the course ofthe summer there will be30 new artisans and ven-dors at this year’s market,McKnight notes.
Some of the offer-ings from new vendorsinclude gluten-free food,hand-tied fishing flies,
hummingbird feeders,homemade pet supplies,and home and garden ironproducts.
Live entertainment forSunday’s market featuresthe Marlin RamazziniLatin Band (10 a.m. to 1p.m.) and the Shaken NotStirred Jazz Trio (1 to 4p.m.)
Organizers are “allowinga little bit of wiggle room”for the first market’s setupbecause of the road workin Ladner Village.

A local tradition contin-ues this weekend with theTsawwassen Shrine Club’s47th annual salmon bar-becue.
“It’s one of the largestbarbecues in B.C., I think,”says local Shrine Clubmember Michael Cruise.
He says the annualevent, held at LadnerHarbour Park, typicallyfeeds about 2,000 people.
It is the local ShrineClub’s main event of theyear.
“It’s affordable, and it’sto support the Shriners intheir community endeav-ours.”
The barbecue costs
$12 per person. The priceincludes about an eight-ounce portion of salmon,coleslaw, French fries, abun and coffee or juice.Pop costs extra.
The barbecue takesplace rain or shine. There
are takeaway containersavailable for those wishingto eat elsewhere.
It runs from noon to 6p.m. Sunday.

Tsawwassen’s BoyuanHan Bridge has a screen-ing scheduled next weekin Vancouver for his newindependent film.
He describes the film,titled The Modern Angel,as an “independent art-house anthological filmtold in three chaptersabout the contemporarymodern angel, or at leastwhat that is to people.”
Bridge, 22, explains theproject started out as threeshort films, the first ofwhich he submitted to the2016 Canada InternationalFilm Festival, winning a
Royal Reel honour in theFirst Time FilmmakerCompetition.
He followed that bymaking two more shortfilms.
“But they all addressedthe same theme. I endedup watching them back toback with a couple peopleand they were saying howthey all kind of tied togeth-er,” Bridge explains.
The Modern Angel is an“anthological depictionof alienation in the con-temporary world,” a pressrelease notes. The film fol-lows three young womenand “their interactionsare observed as they getinvolved in situations sur-
rounding themes of love,compassion and artistry.”
Bridge, a Simon FraserUniversity alumnus whoearned a bachelor of artsin criminology and psy-chology, says he’s workingon developing two morefeature films. He becameinterested in filmmakingafter taking an elective filmtheory course.
The screening is sched-uled for Tuesday, June14 at 7:30 p.m. at theCinematheque Theatre,1131 Howe St., Vancouver.

Tromans, whose goal isbecome a concert pianist,performed Chopin’s PianoConcerto No. 1 in E minorat the competition.
As a result of winning hereceives scholarship fund-ing to continue his studies,a solo recital in Alan andGwendoline Pyatt Hall anda performance as soloistwith the VSO during the2016-2017 VSO season,notes VSO School of Musicexecutive director CurtisPendleton.
“He works very hard,practicing every day, andhas the strong support ofhis parents in develop-ing his musical talent,”

Tips for sticking to that fitness regimen
You know the hardestpart of a workout? Walkingout your front door.
Just the simple act ofstarting is the most chal-lenging exercise in aworkout (second hardest:burpees).
However, once youget your runners on andyour butt out the door, it’spretty much clear sailingfrom there. And then if youimplement one (or all!)of these tips, you will getthere a lot faster. That’s atrainer’s promise.
• Workout in themorning.We have morewillpower in the morn-ing. Think of willpowerlike a gas gauge. Throughthe course of the day weslowly use this “gas” while
making all those rightchoices for our healthand our person. Witheach decision and choicewe make, the gauge goesdown a little bit.
This is why most dietsare broken in the eveningand not at breakfast. It’salso why the couch looksway more inviting at 7 p.m.than it does at 7 a.m.
If we leave exercise untilthe end of the day, it’s tooeasy to have life take over,leaving us to push thatworkout to the next day,until eventually the “nextday” never happens. Getit done first thing in themorning (before the messyparts of day-to-day liv-ing begin) and you are farmore likely to succeed increating fitness as a habit.
• Prepare ahead. Fromeating healthier to workingout to mental and spiritualhealth, planning aheadand scheduling what youneed to do to crush yourgoals will get you therefaster than any other tip Ican give you. Plan that 10to 15 minutes every dayto meditate. Set appoint-ments for your workouts,plan and prep your mealsfor the week ahead. Leave
no stone unturned.• Put a pin in your
excuses. If you are oneof those individuals whocan never find the timeto exercise because youare too busy, I want youto play a game with me.Tomorrow set aside 20minutes to workout andthen at the end of the dayask yourself if those 20minutes hurt you for timemanagement, or did theyenergize you? I bet myover-priced Tsawwassenhome they energized you.
• Order counts.Whenin the gym use dumbbells,barbells and machines,and in that order. Oursmaller stabilizing musclesare recruited the highestfor dumbbell exercises,but they also fatigue fasterthan our larger muscles.So while they are fresh, usethe tools that will stimu-late them the most first.
It is also recommended(for beginners) to trainyour bigger muscles first(the legs, back and chestmuscles), and then thesmaller supporting mus-cles at the end of yourworkout (biceps, triceps,shoulders, abs). This isbecause our smaller mus-
cles also help with our bigmuscle movements too.
• Recover faster.Nothing can be more ofa buzzkill to your fitnessprogram than sore mus-cles. To help keep yourmuscles fresh try addingBCAAs (branched chainamino acids) to your waterat each workout. BCAAshelp reduce muscle break-down and conserve tissueduring intense workouts.Another muscle-sorenessbuster is tart cherry andblueberry juice. The anti-oxidants found in theseberries have been shownto significantly reducemuscle soreness. And dosome sort of light exercisewhen the muscles are sore.The worst thing you cando is be still.
• Finish fasterwithmore intense exercises.If you are short on timeintense workouts liketabatas and HIITs are thebest workouts for you.
• Don’t isolate. Forgetfocusing on just one mus-cle group and insteaduse big body moves likesquats, lunges, pull-upsand presses. These typesof moves will recruit moremuscles in one exercise,
giving you more bang foryour fitness buck.
• Warm up the rightway.Don’t think afive- to 10-minute jogon the treadmill will getyour muscles ready fora strength workout, or asport for that matter. Whileit’s a good start, you alsoneed to add bodyweightmovements and dynamicstretches to the mix so youtarget the muscles you willbe using in a full range ofmotion.
• Skip themachines.You will build your func-tional strength faster andbetter if you use dumb-bells, cable machines andother weight-based toolsthat require you to stabi-lize your body and dictatethe plane of motion.
A study at Georgia StateUniversity found olderadults using exercisemachines actually hadtheir strength measuresfor day-to-day activitiesdecline by 3.5 per centafter two years of training.
While the participantswere able to lift more onthe machines throughthe years, this strengthdid not translate to theirdaily activities. Reason:
machines do not requireyour stabilizer musclesto work. You simply sitin a machine and let themachine support you andthis in turn is not transfer-able to how our body’smuscles work in real life.
• Stop trying to spottrain.We cannot per-form a certain exercisefor one body part inhopes of burning the fatsolely from that area.A great example are abcrunches. Researchers atthe University of Virginiafound it takes 250,000crunches to burn onepound of fat — that’s 100crunches a day for sevenyears!
Instead, what will burnthe fat faster is a consist-ent weekly workout planthat includes at least threetimes a week strengthbased moves and two tothree times a week car-dio, accompanied with ahealthy eating plan. Abraham, the fatherof both Jews and Arabs,was an exceptional man.We read about his life inGenesis (the first bookof the Bible). There is aninteresting, though eas-ily missed, verse aboutAbraham that seems toreveal something abouthis attitude toward life:“Abraham planted a tama-risk tree in Beersheba,and there he called onthe name of the Lord, theEternal God.” (Genesis21:33, NIV)
The key part of thisverse is Abraham’s wor-ship, but what jumped outat me was that he planteda tree. There’s probably aconnection between plant-ing the tree and worship-ing the Eternal God, butthere were also practical
benefits to planting trees.When you live in tents ina hot, arid climate, treesare a good thing to havearound.
What fascinated me wasthat Abraham was morethan 100 years old! Whoplants a tree when theyare 100? If you do, you
don’t expect to get muchbenefit from it personally.The older you get (so I’mtold…), the easier it is tofocus on the past.
Planting a tree looks tothe future. It is refusing tobe limited to memoriesof past experiences andaccomplishments. It isrefusing to settle for thestatus quo. It is choosingto live life facing forward.I want to be the kind ofperson who plants a treeat 100.

Tips For ProspectiveHorse OwnersChildren often dream of waking up one morning and finding their own horse or pony intheir yards. Some people are able to make this dream a reality and own these beautifulanimals.Whether raising a horse for pleasure or profession, it is important to know that caringfor horses can be labour-intensive. The reward for properly taking care of a horse is ahealthy and well-trained animal. But horse ownership is a significant and expensiveresponsibility, so it is important that prospective owners understand what they are gettinginto before they make any final decisions.
BreedThe first to consider when mulling horse ownership is the breed. If you areunfamiliar with horses, it is best to research different breeds online and visithorse breeders and owners. Perhaps workers at a stable or farm nearby canguide your choice. There also are forums devoted to horses and care. Somerecommended breeds for first-time owners include quarter horses, paints, andmorgans. However, all horses are individuals and may have their own uniquepersonality traits.
Acreage and housingHorses are large animals and will need room to exercise and roam. Theyrequire a corral or pasture to stretch their legs, so a potential horse owner willneed a relatively large property to give a horse the space it needs. In additionto the corral, the horse will require a shelter from the elements. A shed orstable should be at least 10 to 12 feet in both width and length. The height ofthe stable should be a minimum of 8 feet. This stable will provide shelter inboth the cold and heat.When establishing a pasture, be sure it is fenced in with a highly visible fencethat is tall enough so that the horse cannot easily jump it. The fence shouldbe clearly visible so the horse does not mistakenly try to go through it, riskingentanglement or injury.
FeedingThe average saddle horse weighs roughly 1,000 pounds if not more. Theanimal can eat anywhere from 17 to 26 pounds of feed per day. Feed is acombination of grain, hay and pasture, but salt also should be made availableto the horse. If the weather prevents grazing, supplemental hay will be needed.Keep in mind hay bails can weigh up to 85 pounds. They also will take upconsiderable space. This is something that needs to be factored into the spacerequirement for a horse.Feed and water troughs can be purchased at livestock supply stores or bemade from repurposed buckets and barrels. Horses need plenty of fresh waterto drink and the water trough should be checked and cleaned regularly tomaintain a sanitary environment.
Tack and saddlesDepending on how you use the horse, you will need saddles, reins, bits,stirrups, cinches, spurs, ropes, and collars. Saddle bags and cushions may beneeded if you will be on the horse for long periods of time.In addition, pitchforks, shovels, brushes and grooming supplies will be neededto keep the stable and horse clean and comfortable.
Veterinary careResearch and develop a relationship with a veterinarian prior to purchasing ahorse. Horses require routine vaccinations and examinations, and dewormingis necessary to control internal parasites. Hooves will need to be trimmedregularly, so it behooves owners to establish a relationship with a qualifiedfarrier. The vet may recommend farriers in your area.Horses are magnificent animals that can bring joy and companionship. Butthose interested in owning a horse must recognize that such ownership is asignificant responsibility unlike more traditional pet ownership.

The Delta Islanders hope to be back at theCoquitlam Sports Centre a month from nowand celebrating again.
The Islanders solidified their status as one oftop contenders at the 2016 provincial champi-onships by becoming the first-ever team fromDelta to capture Midget A1 Division honours atCoquitlamMinor Lacrosse’s Trevor WingroveTournament.
The event started off as the DogwoodTournament back in 1984 before being re-named four years ago in honour of the admiredplayer who lost a courageous battle to cancer.It typically showcases the top talent in theprovince at the Pee Wee, Bantam andMidgetA1 levels and attracts teams beyond the LowerMainland, including Vancouver Island, Albertaand the US.
The Islanders’ road to the champion-ship included round-robin wins over PortCoquitlam, USA Boxla and the Juan de FucaWhalers. Haiden Dickson, Mitch Sansberg andgoalie Jarvis Dashkewytch were awarded therespective gameMVPs.
Delta then moved onto the semi-finals whereit faced the top seeded team from Alberta anddoubled the Calgary Hornets 12-6. CaptainMark Yingling was selected the game’s MVP.
The result sent the locals off to the champi-onship game to take on league rival and hostsCoquitlam. The Islanders relied on the strongplay of Dashkewytch in net to open up a fourgoal lead and went on to post a solid 10-5 vic-tory. Dean Kishuichi collected gameMVP hon-ours.
It was only fitting Vancouver Stealth star andLadner’s own Logan Schuss was the tourna-
ment’s special guest to present awards to thefirst Delta team to capture Midget Divisionhonours. Among the presentations was theTournament’s Most Inspirational Award goingto Dashkewytch.
Rounding out the Islanders’ roster are JakeCantlon, Jared Molici, Jackson McCleod,Max Stalling, Jon Grieg, James Grieg, JohnWoodward, Arjun Singh, Mitch Godlonton,Owen Borthwick and Zack Kyriacethys. Theteam also relied on Bantam A1 call-ups BenMcDonald and Rhys Porteous for the champi-

success before — winning the Bantam A1 pro-vincial title back in 2014.
The depth of talent was reflected in theselection process for the B.C. team heading toMidget Nationals this summer with five playersand one alternate named to the roster — themost of any association in the province.
The Islanders are coached by Stephen andDarron Alexander, Chris McCluskie and TannerTaylor. The manager is Jeff Stalling.

Coached by Tim Bakker, Corey EdgeandWayne Carleton, the Pirates enteredthe event on a hot streak after going 8-2 toconclude their regular season. They car-ried that momentum into Kelowna withoutstanding play in their opening twogames to produce decisive wins againstPenticton andWest Kelowna.
The Pirates then faced the top WestKelowna team last Saturday afternoonin 35C degree heat. With some great hit-ting and determination, they rallied backin the final inning to earn a spot in thechampionship game Sunday against theundefeated Penticton Tigers.
On another hot day, the final was a tightgame against a strong opponent.
Penticton enjoyed a 4-3 lead after twoinnings, but the Pirates battled back withkey hits to take a 6-5 lead going into thefourth. The Tigers responded with fourruns to take a 9-6 lead.
The unfazed Pirates roared back likethey have done all year to score three runsin the bottom half of the fourth to tie thegame going into the final inning.
With some great pitching and defence,the Pirates held Penticton scoreless in thefifth and quickly went to work in the bot-tom half of the inning. With timely hitsand great base running, the Pirates scoredthe winning run to capture the tourney.
This was truly a team victory with ter-rific efforts from Dylan Flaming, TygranPainter, Zach Nakagawa, Mathew Smith,Nate Rohwer, Ryder Stojkovich, TysonSandulak, Matthew, Pawlikowski, JacksonBakker, Ryan Carleton and Layne Edge.

Richard passed away May 10, 2016 after a shortbattle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by hisloving family, wife Joan, sons Brian (Kirstie), Greg(Cassie), grandchildren Megan, Emily, Collin andHannah, brothers Don (Joyce), Dave (Lise), sister inlaw Sheila, brother in law Ron. A celebration of lifewas held for family and close friends onMay 15, 2016.

Ruby was the third childborn to John and Jennie(nee Preston) O’Rourke ofHodgeville, SK. After gradua-tion, Ruby took a businesscourse in Regina beforemoving to Fort William, ONwhere she worked in a
defense plant. There she met and married FrankWood in August, 1945. The couple moved to BritishColumbia in 1948, where they worked until retiringin 1972. On their River Road farm, they lovinglycared for the animals, a shared passion, andwelcomed a number of nieces and nephews whocame to visit. After Frank’s passing, Ruby livedindependently until 2010. Following a brief stay atWaterford in Tsawwassen, Ruby moved to WestShore Laylum where she felt well cared for and inthe heart of her cherished community of Ladner.
Aunt Ruby had a deep love of children. She zeroedin on positive qualities of each of her nephews andnieces, giving some nicknames (The Boss, LittleMiss Two Fingers) or remarking on their particularattributes. She remained an avid conversationalistand storyteller to the end, interested and interesting.Always ready to engage in spirited conversationabout social issues and current events, she madea lasting impression on all she met with her brightmind and forthright manner.
Ruby was predeceased by her loving husband,Frank, on March 3, 1991, her parents, John (1974)and Jennie (1980) O’Rourke, her siblings VictoriaIdell (1988), Robert (1994), Preston (1995), Douglas(2008), and nephews, James David O’Rourke(2008) and Bruce O’Rourke (2011). She is survivedby her brother, Lionel, of Santa Clarita, CA, as wellas numerous nieces and nephews spanning threegenerations and two countries.
Ruby died peacefully at her home in West ShoreLaylum on June 5. Ruby did not want a FuneralService; instead, friends and family are invited to aninformal tea at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 LadnerTrunk Road, Saturday, June 11th, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

WESTLAKE, Garfield (Gar)June 25, 1929 - June 7, 2016
To know Gar was to love Gar. Gar passed awaypeacefully on Tuesday, June 7th. He is survived byhis loving wife, Margaret; daughters Shelley Krauss(Stan) and Barb; three grandchildren, Chris, Trevorand Pricilla; one great granddaughter, Christy-Anna.
Gar was born in Bayfield, Ontario and moved to BC atthe age of 17 to join his brother, Bill, in the roadconstruction industry. He worked for AC MacEachernLtd. on the coast and on Vancouver Island.
Gar became a Charter Member of the Lions Club in1967. The family moved from Gold River to Tsawwassenin 1972 and Gar continued his membership with theTsawwassen-Boundary Bay Lions Club. He enjoyed his49 years of Lionism and served in many executivepositions.
He established Westlake Contracting and operatedthis company, together with Bill in the South Deltaarea. He chaired the Tsawwassen Sun FestivalCommittee for many years. His great delight washis friends and family including the McDonald’scoffee group.
Gar will always be remembered for his quick sense ofhumour and his volunteering in every community he resided.
A Celebration of life will be held 2-4 pm, Monday,June 13th at the Royal Oaks social room, 1100 56thStreet, Tsawwassen. No flowers please.
