Arizona History Day For one day each year in May, the Del Rio Campus time warps back to the 1800's. When you walk onto campus early in the morning you can smell a campfire of pine and juniper getting ready for the branding irons. Horse trailers line the back fence, roping dummies fill the soccer fields and everywhere you look there are real cowboys standing around waiting for the 4th grade students. The Arizona studies come to life! From butter churning, to weaving, to cowboys singing, it all becomes real and very hands on. This culminating activity is sometimes a little too real, washing clothes by hand and sitting in a one room schoolhouse, donated by parents and community members a few years ago, on a hard wooden bench, ouch! This day is magical, and fun, and an unforgettable learning experience. Some of the best moments during Arizona History Day is seeing the all the volunteers who come out from Chino and Prescott, along with retired teachers, to teach the students about Arizona, watching the students excitement as they participate in each activity, enjoying an atmosphere from the past as all the kids and adults dress in pioneer or western clothes and the band plays traditional cowboy music all morning long. Not only do the students learn a lot about history that day, but they feel a sense of belonging to the Del Rio School family. Lunch is one big campfire picnic with all the kids eating together in the courtyard, then several of the classes end the day with awards from the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering. The students submit cowboy poems which are judged by local cowboy poets. The top three poets from each class are invited to present their poems at the Gathering in August only with cowboy poets from all over the nation. This year Arizona History Day will take place on Thursday, May 11th. All 4th grade students are encouraged to dress in the appropriate Arizona history attire. The 4th graders will experience a tradition of activities from a glimpse into Native American life in our on-site Hogan, branding real cow hide donated by Perkinsville Meat Packing, Roping, to participating in stick horse barrel races. They will have the opportunity to learn from Mr. Eby about the Arizona Roughriders, they will learn to weave wool from the Arizona Spinners and Weavers, and listen to music from the “Rusty Pistols Cowboy Band” which includes: Jim Dunham, as lead singer and rhythm guitarist; Duane Steinbrink, lead guitarist; Bob Wood, singer and rhythm guitarist; and Donn Pease, playing the upright bass.

Del Rio School values tradition and is excited to present Arizona

History Day once again to the 4th graders this school year. If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact our front office at 928-636-4414.
