Evaluating safety and reliability of in-service equipment

Real-life conditions can often differ considerably from original design parameters with significant consequences on deterioration mechanisms which affect equipment reliability and safe operational life.

Owners and operators of critical assets, therefore, need to rely on expert engineering assessments when making decisions to continue operation, alter operating parameters, repair or replace plant equipment.

Edif ERA engineers have a international reputation for the development of corrosion assessment and management programs for a variety of industries and assets. This spectrum of materials and corrosion knowledge enables our engineers to offer a broad range of technical services. These range from on-site field support to the development of complex degradation models to support any Integrity Management Systems in situ.

As a long-standing independent consultancy, Edif ERA’s consultants’ knowledge and expertise enables them to provide the impartial advice valued by their clients across industry.

Helping customers to resolve damage issues

Edif ERA’s involvement over the past 30 years in degradation assessment has enabled its engineers to develop a deep understanding of industry-specific issues and life-limiting damage mechanisms.

As a result, they have a successful track record of helping their clients identify safety-critical items in need of immediate remediation as well as support for long-term strategic asset planning for inspection, repair and replacement programmes.

Experience-based assessment and detailed capabilities

Having worked on a broad range of process units and facilities across the refining industry, Edif ERA is able to support its clients to:

• assess corrosion/degradation potential in circuits with aggressive sulfidation, naphthenic acids

• define cost/benefit solutions to address material degradation risks through RBI studies, including defining detailed inspection programmes and specifying both Integrity Operating Windows and adequate process monitoring strategies

• understand the implications of new operating conditions on asset life, e.g. high temperature hydrogen attack, creep and fatigue, high temperature H2S/H2 sulfidation

• audit existing integrity management programs

• provide experienced and certified API inspectors to support activities during turnarounds in order to diagnose and evaluate damage, to assess risk and to advise on reparation alternatives

Through these services, Edif ERA can help its clients to maximise their assets’ life and availability while reducing both economic and environmental/safety risks and repair/replacement costs.

Example of capabilities

Although the Oil & Gas industry is aware of the economic benefits of processing opportunity crudes, it is not always clear about the long-term effects of these crudes on the life of the plant. The question then arises, do the immediate benefits compensate for the costs incurred when asset life is reduced?

Edif ERA can help answer that question by developing crude blending plans in order to run individual opportunity crudes while calculating instantaneous corrosion rates and remaining corrosion allowance of every circuit involved, considering the following parameters:

• operating conditions

• material of construction

• flow regime and velocity

• piping configuration

• reactive sulfur and acid content

• inhibitor injection

Taking into account remaining life, probability of failure and its consequences, an inspection plan would be developed. Future inspection should be updated, taking into consideration the latest inspection results and operating conditions.

These studies provide the rationale for the operator to decide whether running an opportunity crude is worthwhile, based on a cost benefit analysis. If it is, the study provides a detailed inspection and monitoring plan to be implemented according to the new operating conditions.

Why Edif ERA?

For critical industries and environments world-wide, we provide technical inspection, engineering and consultancy services to reduce risk, optimise performance and enhance capability, giving our customers the confidence to build successful operations.
