Defoe’sChapel,Tooting,LondonTranscriptionofArticleintheChristianMessengerbyFentonAllenDuringrecentdecadesthePrimitiveMethodistChurchhasacquiredsomehistoricecclesiasticaledifices.Chapelsthathavebelongedtoothercommunionshavebeenpurchasedandutilisedfortheprosecutionofourmany-sidedwork.InLondonwesecuredthefar-famedSurreyChapel,formanyyearsthesceneoftheevangelicallaboursoftheeccentricRowlandHill,godlyJamesSharman,andculturedNewmanHall.HockeyChapel,Nottingham,wasacquiredfromtheWesleyans.Itistheburial-placeofAlexanderKilham,theprincipalfounderoftheNewConnexionChurch.WithinitswallsJohnWesleypreachedtheGospel.CheltenhamChapelisdistinguishedashavingbeenfavouredwiththeministryoftheRev.JamesSmith,apreacherandwriterofnocommonrepute,whosebooksonreligioussubjectsaretobefoundinmanycottagehomes.TheChurchoftheSaviour,Birmingham,wasformerlyUnitarian,andwasbuiltforthecongregationoftheeloquentGeorgeDawson.OurlatestacquisitionfromotherdenominationshasbeentherecentpurchaseoftheHighStreetChapel,Tooting.TheoriginalcongregationwasfoundedbyDanielDefoe,thecelebratedauthorofthatfavouriteclassicofchildhood’shappydays-“RobinsonCrusoe.“FashionableTooting,ortogiveititsfullnameofTootingGraveney,isincludedinthewideareaofgreaterLondon.ItislocatedatadistanceofsomesevenmilesfromWestminsterAbbey,anditissaidtobethesmallestparishinthebeautifulcountyofSurrey.Thenameoftheplacehasanun-English,ifnotaforeignsound.Somearchaeologistshavesupposedthatthenameisderivedfromitshavingbeenusedasa“tut”ora“beacon,”wherefireandflameshotforthfromthehigherlandstowarntheinhabitantsofthesurroundingneighbourhoodoftheapproachoftheinvadingfoe.ThereisnotadoubtthatoriginallyitwasthehomeofsomebranchoftheSaxonorTeutonicfamilyoftheTotingas,whohavestampedtheirnameupontheirplaceofresidence.IntheNormanperiodtheManorwasheldbythepowerfulGravenells.IncourseoftimethenameoftheparishbecamecorruptedintoTootingGraveney.DanielDefoeisthemostcelebratedpersonalityconnectedwithTooting.HeissaidtohavelivedforashorttimeduringhisearlymanhoodatMerton,closebyTootingJunctionRailwayStation.DanielDefoe,the-“renownedauthorof“RobinsonCrusoe,"wasborninLondonabouttheyear1661.BybirthhisfatherwasaNorthamptonshireman,whobeganbusinessasabutcherinSt.Giles’,London.The“illustrious”DanielwaswelleducatedataDissentingAcademy,withtheviewofhisbecomingaNonconformistminister.Intheyear1685,
Defoebeganhischequeredandeventfulcareerasahorse-dealer.InthedaysoftheRebellionheservedwithMonmouth,andalsowasavolunteerinthearmyofKingWilliamIII.HismilitaryexploitscausedhimtowanderinFrance,Spain,andotherContinentalCountries.Unfortunately,in1693,hebecameabankrupt,buttohishonour,beitstated,thatinhislateryearshemosthonourablymetthefinancialdemandsofhisnumerouscreditors.Asanaccountanthewasemployedbytheglass-dutycommissioners,andwasalsosecretarytoaTilburypantilefactory.Intheclosingyearsoftheseventeenthcenturyhedevotedhimselftoliterature.HebecameoneofthegreatestandmostillustriousofEnglishprosewriters.Hisadmirershavestyledhim“TheFatherofEnglishnovelists.”Hisprolificpenproducedovertwohundredandfiftyseparateworks,whichhaveastylepeculiarlytheirown,andarethoroughlydistinctfromallotherwritingsinthegreatrealmofliterature.Healsowasanextensivecontributortothejournalisticandperiodicalliteratureofhisage.Asabusypamphleteerhewroteindefenceofthekingandhispolicy.Defoe’spoliticalpoem,entitled,“TheTrue-BornEnglishman,”wasapologeticincharacter.ItdefendedtheDutchnationalityoftheking,showingthattheEnglishpeoplewereacompositerace,withamixtureofforeignbloodflowingintheirveins.DuringthereignofQueenAnnehetookaforemostpartinthebittercontroversybetweenthebigotedHighChurchfactionandtheunfortunatepersecutedNonconformists.Thepublishingofhissatiricalandironicaltreatise-“TheShortestWaywiththeDissenters”-stirredupnationalstrife,andmadehimamartyrforconscience’sake.TheHouseofCommonsdenouncedhisbook,anddeterminedthatthecopiesshouldbepubliclyburned.Arewardof£50wasofferedfortheapprehensionoftheauthor.HewastriedattheOldBailey,andwassentencedtopaytheextravagantfineoftwohundredmarks,tostandthriceinthepublicpillory,andtobeimprisonedduring,herMajesty’spleasure.Atthetimeofhisincarcerationingaolheisdescribedas“amiddle-sized,spareman,aboutfortyyearsold,ofabrowncomplexion,anddark-browncolouredhair,butwearsawig.Ahookednose,asharpchin,greyeyes,andhasalargemolenearhismouth.”Whileimprisonedforthegoodcauseofrighteousness,hewaseverbusywithhispen.Hisprisonwritingsandliteraryoutputincludedhis“TrueCollection”ofallhisnumerouspublications.His“Review”wasthelargest,ifnothismostimportantwork.Onewritersays:“Itformsoneofthegreatestmonumentsofliteraryindustryeverrearedbyasinglehand,embracingasitdoesinmorethanfivethousandprintedpages,essaysonalmosteverybranchofhumanknowledge,andthesewrittenduringnineyears,inwhichhealsopublishednofewerthaneightydistinctworks,themselvescontainingasmanyas4,727pages.”Afterhisreleasefromprison,helivedforashorttimeatBurySt.Edmunds,inSuffolk.UponhisreturntoLondon,hewassentintheyear1703,byRobertHarleyonapoliticalmissionofsecrecytotheWestofEngland.Duringthefollowingyearhispatron,Harley,despatchedhimtoScotland,whereheresided,forsixteenmonths,andwastryingtopromotetheunionofthetwokingdoms.In1715Defoepublishedhisimmortal“RobinsonCrusoe,”basedontheenforcedexileofAlexanderSelkirk,themaroonedsailorinthelonelysea-girtisleofJuanFernandez.Thiswonderfullyand
graphicallywrittenstory-bookhasbecomeagreatfavouritewiththeyoungandtheold,andwiththelearnedandtheilliterate.Defoe,inhisdecliningdays;becameexceedinglyprosperous.AtStokeNewingtonhebuiltforhimself“averyhandsomehouse,“wherehelivedinthestyleofacountrygentleman.HediedinApril,1731,andhismortalremainswerelaidtorestinthefamouscemeteryofBunhillFields.Ithasbeensaid“ThatgreatasDefoewasasanauthor,hewasfargreaterasaman.Hedaredtodohisownthinkinginanagewhenindependenceofthoughtwasararething.Forthesakeofcivilandreligiouslibertyhewentfromhisdrawing-roomtotheprisoncell,fromhiscarriagetothepillory,and,ifithadbeennecessary,wouldhavegonetothestake.”AlthoughDanielDefoewastrainedfortheministry,yet,forsomeunknowncause,hewasneverordainedtothepastorate.DuringhisshortresidenceatTooting,andintheyear1688,hebecamethehonouredfounderofaNonconformistchurch.Theirsuccessorsworshippedinthechapelthatstillbearshisname.ItismorethanprobablethatthecongregationgatheredbyDefoeatfirstheldtheirreligiousservicesinahouse.Astheirnumbersincreasedtheyutilisedatemporarystructureofwood,whichwasusedbythemasameetinghouseuntiltheerectionoftheDefoeMemorialChapel.Thisedificewaserectedin1765-somethirtyyearsafterDefoe’sdeath.Itfrontsthemainstreetofthetown,andisbuiltintheplainstyleofecclesiasticalarchitectureoftheGeorgianperiod.TheoldoakpulpitofDefoe’sMemorialChapelissacredwithhistoricmemories.FormanyyearsItwasusedbytheRev.ThomasGoodwin,D.D.,whowasthePresidentofMagdalenCollege,Oxford,amemberoftheWestminsterAssemblyofDivines,andoneof“thetwoAtlasesandPatriarchsofIndependency.”ThepastorateofDefoe’sChapelhasbeensustainedbyasuccessionoflearnedandgodlydivines.ThefirstministerwasthedistinguishedDr.JoshuaOldfield.Hewasthesonofoneoftheejectedclergymenof1662,andheldthehonourablepositionoftutortothefamilyofPaulFoley,SpeakeroftheHouseofCommonsduringthereignofWilliamPrinceofOrange.Underhisdevotedministry,thechapelwasregularlyattendedbyseveralrespectable,educated,andevenwealthyhouseholds.Dr.OldfieldwassucceededbysuchpulpitdignitariesastheRev.HenryMiles,D.D.,F.R.S.;Dr.SamuelWilton;JamesBowden,therecognisedfounderoftheSurreyMission;andWilliamHenry,theindefatigablesecretaryoftheHomeMissionarySociety.Intheyear1861,theRev.WilliamAndersonwasinvitedtopresideoverthesacredministriesofthechurch.InhisinauguraladdressheremindedhisauditoryofthemoralheroismofDefoe,“who,asabravepatriotandmanofgenius,inanageofpersecution,hadhereliftedthebannerofNonconformity.”Withinrecentyearstheownershipofthechapelwassubjecttolitigation,anditpassedfromthePresbyterianstotheCongregationalists.DuringthemonthofMarch,1904,itwassoldbytheRev.BevillAllenandtheTrusteestoourownchurchforthesumof£1,900.IthasbeenacquiredbytheRev.J.BraceEvans(****LINK)andtheworkersoftheBalhamCircuit.Wearehopefulthatthislatest“corner"addedtoourConnexionalVineyardmaybecomethebirthplaceofmanypreciousandimmortalsouls.ReferencesChristian Messenger 1904/132
