Northwood FC

2 Northwood v Tooting & Mitcham United | Saturday 11th August 2018

Welcome back to Northwood Park this afternoon at the start of a new season, to our supporters new and old, and to all

connected with Tooting & Mitcham United FC; we trust they enjoy their stay with us and have a safe journey home later.

Our visitors played Bostik League Premier football last season, and although they were relegated after one term at that level, I’m told that they were a difficult side to beat. There have been quite a few new players joining The Terrors over the summer, and they are rated amongst the favourites for promotion this time around, so we look to be in for a tough time!

There have been also been plenty of changes at Northwood since the end of last season, and we welcome new manager Dean Barker, his staff, as well as almost a completely new squad. We have enjoyed a mixed bunch of results during pre-season – the highlight of course being the win over Chelsea Under 23s four weeks ago – and the new-look Woods team is bound to take a while to settle in and get used to playing together; friendlies cannot replicate competitive football.

As you will be aware, the latest re-organisation of the non-League pyramid by the Football Association has resulted in Northwood being moved back to the Isthmian League (currently known as the Bostik League). Divisions at our level have been reduced to 20 teams as a result of the changes, so four less league matches to play. There are a few clubs to meet for the first time, and some teams to play again that we haven’t seen for a few years ago – like Tooting & Mitcham, who were last here back in 2002.

The reduction in division sizes means fewer midweek games, so the Woods are next in action next Saturday, when we play away to FC Romania; they play their home games at Cheshunt FC. Our next fixture here is on Saturday 25th August versus Holmer Green or Longlevens in the Emirates FA Cup.

Many thanks for your support this afternoon, and we hope to see you here again very soon!

Good afternoon and welcome to Chestnut Avenue for today’s Bostik League fixture. We welcome our

visitors from Tooting & Mitcham United FC and trust they enjoy their short stay here.

Having moved across to this division, we play a number of ‘new’ teams this season. Having said we were more than happy with where we were, a move I guess was inevitable!

As usual, there were some very strange decisions as to which clubs ended up where and with virtually no recourse to achieve a successful appeal, some teams, as indeed we have in the past, get a very rough end of the stick.

Of course, the summer ‘break’ has been and gone now and I decided this season to do

most of the pitch maintenance work ourselves, to save money. Having done this, Mother Nature has been hard at work and the long bout of sunshine has made it extremely difficult to get the pitch in tip-top condition, but it is now better than most.

Dean Barker and his new management team have been hard at work preparing the team for today. We welcome them all to the club, and of course wish them every success here for a long time.

The summer ‘help’ day was a great success with 21 people carrying out much needed work! Great to see, certainly comparing to the three who came last year, but we need to build on this, as there’s still plenty to do.

Media wise, we have upped our game tremendously with Craig Whitehead coming across from Wealdstone and in such a short space of time, he has created our own YouTube channel, re-invented Woods TV and come up with some wonderful designs.

We hope you’re happy about the return of the printed matchday programme; this has only been possible due to an extremely generous donation from one of our long standing supporters (who wishes to remain anonymous).

We also thank our main sponsor, John Flynn from Ruislip Windows & Doors, who continues to support us and those of you that have bought season tickets, again, thanks for your support. Please note; there are a number of Club 1926 season tickets still available, which gets you exclusive access to the board room with hospitality on match days, player sponsorship and much more!

More to come in my next notes, but for now, enjoy the game, get behind the team and let’s hope for a successful season.

Up the Woods!

MANAGER DEAN BARKER

4 Northwood v Tooting & Mitcham United | Saturday 11th August 2018

Good afternoon, and welcome back to Northwood Park for our first league game of the season.

I’d also like to extend a warm welcome for today’s fixture.to everyone connected with Tooting & Mitcham United FC.

These are my second programme notes since taking the job, so hopefully it’s a good luck charm as the last column saw us beat Premier League Chelsea FC to win our first trophy at the club in the process.

We have certainly learned a lot over pre-season, with only one or two players staying on at the club from last year so we have had to build a new team from scratch which as everyone knows isn’t very easy. The boys’ attitudes have been excellent and they have taken in a lot of information during our six wins and two defeats. We have also used 40 players during the process.

Hopefully this is the start of building a team that the club can be proud of. We want to play attacking, exciting football and, as we have seen in pre-season, we have players who on their day that can score goals.

Last Saturday we announced as our captain, Carl Pearce, who experienced Step 3 football last season at Wingate & Finchley and was also part of the promotion winning squad at Potters Bar Town. Our Vice Captain this season is Karl

Stevenson, who has also experienced football at a higher level, with Wingate & Finchley and Hayes & Yeading United, so we believe we have made some good choices for our club.

During pre-season we have tried to bring the squad together with a team meal, a team night out, took the players to a gym session and for a swim, along with the normal getting fit training sessions, so spirits in the camp are high with a

good morale going into this afternoon’s game.

It will be a good test for us today against a side which last season when I was at Wingate & Finchley we came up against and never beat them. So with them being relegated last April, I would expect them to be one of the favourites for promotion this season.

As we head into the new campaign I would ask

“ Hopefully this is the start of building a team that the club

can be proud of ”

for some patience as we rebuild this club on and off the pitch after a few struggling seasons, but trust that the players and management will give their all for the badge.

We have a young squad who will learn throughout the season. That’s not an excuse, but we are realistic with the finances we have available. We will make mistakes but how we learn from them, bounce back, and recover will be the key to us having a successful season.

It’s an exciting time to be a supporter of Northwood FC! The welcome I have been given since I joined the club has been fantastic, so please support the players at all times and let’s have a club we are proud of once again from the youth section all the way through to the top.

Enjoy the game!

Dean

Club MattersSECRETARY ALAN EVANS

New Season – Back with the Isthmians

It was 1992 that we first made it to the Isthmian League following our Championship-winning season in the then London Spartan League and we enjoyed many successful years in the competition before being moved to play in the Southern League Premier in 2002. When we were relegated from that division two years later, we played again back in the Isthmian League before being transferred once again.

When a side like ours is on the edge of a boundary it is something that may happen from time to time though in our new division – the Bostik Isthmian Division One South Central – we appear to be more towards the middle of the boundaries! Anyway, we have brought a number of familiar clubs with us – Hanwell Town, Uxbridge, Chalfont St. Peter, Hayes & Yeading United and Ashford Town (Middx) – have picked up some old friends – Cheshunt, Tooting & Mitcham United, Hertford Town and Waltham Abbey – while we also have a sprinkling of new opponents such as South Park, Bedfont Sports, Westfield and Chipstead.

Welcome new Manager – Dean Barker

Since taking up the opportunity to be the new manager of the Woods, Dean has certainly hit the ground running, appointing an excellent management team around him and making plenty of exciting, early signings. Dean saw Cockfosters to plenty of success during his time with them and spent last season in charge of Wingate & Finchley’s Under-23s who won the Development Division of the Isthmian League as well as reaching two cup finals. Hopefully that success will continue in his new role with the Woods.

Season Tickets

For the fourth season in succession, we are offering a cut-price deal for any supporter who wants to purchase a season ticket for the new season. For the cost of just £40.00 you will gain access to all of our home League games this

season (Cup games are all-pay, as we have to share the gate receipts on all of these so no season tickets are allowed). In addition to this, you will also have free admission to the Under-18s home games in the midweek Isthmian Youth League while cut-price admission charges will also apply if you want to watch London Tigers at home when the Woods are away on their travels (though of course we would love to see you at away games too). To apply please complete an application form either at the clubhouse or on-line (where you can pay by card) from the website www.northwoodfc.com.

Supporters Player of the Year 2018

It was young midfielder Wilson Chingoka (right)who took the Supporters Player of the Year award at the end of last season following in the footsteps of James Budden, Andy Lomas, Berkley Laurencin and Steve Brown in recent years but becoming the first non-defender of the award for some time.

Reflections on 2017/18

It’s was difficult to put into words how disappointing last season was at the club. When we appointed experienced Manager Simon Lane last summer to replace Mark Burgess after more than four years’ service we asked him to buy into a project over several years which would involve developing some of the promising youngsters we have here at Northwood and produce some entertaining football that would see us challenging for initially the top-half and eventually play-off places. Simon, a highly qualified coach himself, recruited another highly-regarded coach in Jake Heracleous and it seemed that then new playing squad that arrived bought into the idea of the high-quality coaching that was on offer. It was never going to be perfect from the

Page 9: NORTHWOOD v TOOTING & MITCHAM UNITED Saturday 11th … · 2020-01-08 · 14 Northwood v Tooting & Mitcham United | Saturday 11th August 2018 JOINT MANAGERS: Ashley Bosah & Cornelius

start as the side was a very young one and it was a real blow to be knocked-out of both FA competitions at the first stage (though both times against highly-rated sides from our level) and cope with the resultant lack of sponsorship monies. Results were, as expected, a little inconsistent - apart from when we lost seven matches on the trot - but the turn of October into November saw us pick up four consecutive League wins and we had surely turned the corner. It turned back to inconsistency, a 0-1 home defeat to Aylesbury was poor, a 3-1 success over Hartley Wintney was superb but it all changed in January when creditable 2-2 draws at Egham Town and against AFC Dunstable were followed by Lane dropping the bombshell which saw him depart to take over at mid-table rivals Egham.

Jake Heracleous gallantly turned down the chance to move with him and the club allowed him to have his first taste of management on an interim basis. It kept the group of players together on the whole but an immediate 3-1 win over bottom club Arlesey Town (and the subsequent draws at Kempston Rovers and Ashford Town) proved a bit of a false dawn. A string of defeats followed and with Jake struggling to cope with the needs of management alongside his day job, he also reluctantly left the club.

Gordon Boateng had been brought down to Northwood by Jake to help him out and it has been Gordon that has kept things going over the last few weeks. Despite plenty of plaudits for the style our very young side played with in many of the latter games, positive results have still proved hard to come by. It was almost a mirror-image of last season when we won just one game between January and the end of the season and that was also a home game against the side who finished bottom of the table.

We did change this in our final two matches of the season. We were all deeply grateful for the work that Gordon put in to get us through to the end of the season without us having to appoint a new manager. He was a real gentleman and did everything we asked of him (apart from getting the odd victory here and there!) but he didn’t want the role permanently as he lives on the other side of London so we advertised the role and we now start once again this summer with another new manager, Dean Barker at the helm.

FA Competitions

The draw for the Preliminary Round of the

Emirates FA Cup sees us have home advantage against either Spartan South Midlands League side Holmer Green or Longlevens, a Gloucestershire-based team that play in the Hellenic League. We’ve never met either club before in competitive football though we have played a couple of friendly fixtures at Holmer Green over the years; they play their Extra Preliminary Round tie today, withe the visitors playing eher at Chestnut Avenue on Saturday 25th August.

The Buildbase FA Trophy doesn’t start for the Woods until October but when we do get underway in that competition we will be away to Dunstable Town who were relegated back from the Southern Premier last season and will play the new season in Division One East of the Southern League.

We are also looking forward to our Under-18s competing in the Isthmian Youth League once again and the team, which reached the Middlesex County Sunday Cup Final last season when most of the boys were a year younger that their opponents, will also be playing in the FA Youth Cup. They have been given a home game to begin with against Brimsdown FC on Thursday 6th September 2018. The winners of that tie will be away to either Colney Heath or Ashford Town (Middlesex) at the next stage.

Printed Programmes are back

After a year of only producing our match-day programmes on-line, we have recently made the decision to return to a printed version for this season. This has been made possible thanks to some kind anonymous sponsorship which will allow us to produce them without making a loss, and we would urge all those who expressed concern at the lack of printed programmes last year will support this venture by buying a copy at each home game!

Groundshare – London Tigers FC – Extended for another year

Our two clubs have agreed a further year’s groundshare arrangement for the season 2018/19 as their Avenue Park ground will still not be ready for a return to football. The Tigers managed to avoid relegation with a string of wins towards the end of the last season so will be playing Premier Division football in the Spartan South Midlands League once again.

12 Northwood v Tooting & Mitcham United | Saturday 11th August 2018

Tooting & Mitcham United FC was formed in 1932 when two local sides, Tooting Town and Mitcham Wanderers amalgamated,

the club remaining in the London League until joining the Athenian League in 1937. In 1938 the Surrey Senior Cup was won for the first time by beating Dulwich Hamlet 2-1. When the Second World War ended the club returned to the Athenian League and were Champions in 1950 and 1955.

They also reached the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time in 1948 unluckily losing by a goal to nil at Millwall and in 1950 reached the First Round Proper again with their first ever home tie against Football League opposition Brighton & Hove Albion, losing 3-2. The club was invited to join the Isthmian League in 1956, the premier amateur league in the South, and they switched from playing in white shirts to black and white stripes. That season saw the club reach the FA Cup Second Round Proper losing to Queens Park Rangers.

In the 1957-58 season they were crowned Isthmian League Champions but were hit by tragedy when star goalkeeper Dave Moore was killed in a car crash soon after the title was won. Season 1958-59 saw the club reach the 3rd round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in its history, beating Football League clubs Bournemouth and Northampton Town

(programme left). In the third round they were drawn at home to Nottingham Forest, one of the top clubs in the country, and led the First Division side 2-0 at half-time but a own goal and a very controversial penalty for handball enabled Forest to scramble a draw. In the replay the Midlands side won 3-0 played before a crowd of 42,362 and they went on to lift the FA Cup at Wembley.

The 1959-60 campaign was one of the best

in the club’s history the Isthmian League Championship was won for the second time and Tooting reached four Cup Finals, winning two. The London Senior Cup was lifted as Bromley were beaten 5-0 and the Surrey Senior Cup was also won when Tooting defeated Walton & Hersham 3-0, great striker and Northern Ireland International Paddy Hasty getting a hat-trick. Paddy would also play for the Great Britain Olympic team in the 1960 summer Olympics and was the last player to score a goal for Team GB until 2012. Tooting were the first amateur side to reach the London Challenge Cup Final for over 30 years losing 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 1974-75 season saw the club reach the FA Cup first round proper and a dream home tie with Crystal Palace (programme right). The Terrors took a first minute lead through Steve Grubb but the Eagles hit back to win 2-1 in front of a 10,000 plus crowd at Sandy Lane.

The following season the club under the guidance of Roy Dwight had their best ever run in the FA Cup reaching the 4th round proper. After beating Romford and Leatherhead away the Terrors had to travel again to Swindon Town in the Third Round and soon found ourselves 2-0 down but a dramatic fight back saw Tooting snatch a draw. In the replay at a packed Sandy Lane Tooting had a great 2-1 victory with Alan Ives scoring the winner after a fine solo run. In the 4th round the Terrors were drawn away yet again with a long trip to Bradford City and despite a brave performance lost 3-1. The club also had their best ever run in the FA Trophy reaching the quarter-final stage losing at eventual winners Scarborough by 1-0.

The club won the Surrey Senior Cup three seasons on the trot in 1976, 1977 and 1978

being the first club to achieve this. In 1983-84 Tooting finished in the bottom two of the Isthmian League but were saved from relegation as Staines Town did not have the required ground grading. However, there was no reprieve in the 1988-89 campaign when the club were relegated for the first time in its history.

In season 1992-93 Tooting won its first trophy for many years when they lifted the Full Members Cup, beating Dorking by a goal to nil, scored by Micky Stephens.

The 1996-97 season proved to be one of the worst in the club’s history, resulting in relegation to the Second Division. By contrast the 2000-01 campaign was the club’s best for many years as the 6th round of the FA Vase was reached and defeat only came at the hands of eventual winners Taunton Town. Even more importantly under the guidance of Keith Boanas and Ian Hazel the Ryman League Division Two Championship was won.

After many years of frustration and setbacks the club moved into its new home at Imperial Fields for the start of the 2002-03 season. In 2009-10 the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup after a gap of many years with a trip to Stockport County but went down to a 5-0 defeat.

In December 2011 former West Ham player Kenny Brown was appointed manager, but

Tooting were relegated at the end of the season. The following seasons saw a succession of managers (Roberto Forzoni, Jamie Martin and Phil Simpson) which cumulated in the club being relegated back to Division One at the end of the 2011-12 campaign.

For the 2013-14 season former Terrors captain Craig Tanner was appointed First Team Manager and was assisted by Adam Moriarty. In their first season Tooting finished in a creditable 11th position. The 2014-15 season again saw the Terrors finish in 11th spot and reach the London Senior Cup Final losing to Hendon, but at the end of the campaign the club parted company with Craig and Adam.

2016-17 was the pinnacle of Tooting’s recent achievements, the club being crowned as Ryman South Champions after a superb season of entertaining football. The team amassed a total of 105 points with 120 goals scored and won the league on goal difference from Dorking Wanderers.

However, at the end of their first season back in the Premier, the club finished in 24th place and were relegated back to Step 4 for the current campaign.

MEMORABLE MEETING

Northwood got back to winning ways with victory over in-form Tooting & Mitcham as they set about getting back amongst the

Ryman League Division Two front-runners. Woods started brightly with Lawrence Holmes sending low ball across the face of the goal and Rene Street heading over, but also survived a scare at the other end when Lee Carroll’s mishit clearance fell at the feet of Conrad Kane, whose 30-yard effort sailed over the unguarded goal. Northwood continued to threaten, Keith Boreham and Mark Barnard going close, before the former’s low shot was deflected into his own net by Gary Whelan to give the Woods the lead on 16 minutes. Chances continued to be created at both ends, Carroll saving well from Kane and Boreham being denied by keeper Haakan Jensgard, before Holmes saw a header blocked on the line after Andy Sherry’s far-post corner was headed back by Barnard. But a lapse in concentration at the back allowed Tooting to draw level on 34 minutes when Graham Knight ran onto Ricky Bholan’s headed pass to punish a static defence. Lee Ambrose should have given Tooting the lead three minutes before the break when he mishit with only Carroll to beat. Holmes also squandered an opportunity at the other end after being set up by Sherry.Northwood came out strongly after the break and were rewarded in 52 minutes when Jensgard was adjudged to have picked up a back-pass, Dave Sargent despatching the ensuing close-range free-kick through a forest of bodies on the Tooting line. The home side extended their lead seven minutes later through an emphatic Sherry strike, and

unstoppable shot from the edge of the box. But Tooting refused to lie down, and pulled one back on 63 minutes, Kane giving Carroll no chance with a spectacular volley. The visitors had a succession of chances to draw level as the Northwood defence continued to be caught square, Kane and Steve Symes guilty of glaring misses. Woods punished Tooting’s profligacy six minutes from time, Boreham finishing well after a neat one-two with Sherry.Northwood: Lee Carroll, Steve Tobin Dave Sargent, Gary Williams, Rene Street, Andy Sherry, Mark Barnard (Lee Passmore), Chris Gell, Keith Boreham (Rod Norton), Scott Fitzgerald, Lawrence Holmes.Tooting & Mitcham: Haakan Jensgard, Graham Knight, Barry Langford, David Ward, Gary Whelan, Steve Symes, Ian Hazel, Leroy Ambrose, Jamie Pace, Charlie De Souza, Conrad Kane.

A defensive error allowed Kingsbury to equalise, and despite Fitzgerald coming close to completing his hat-trick on two further occasions, the two teams ended the game on level terms.

Evo-Stik League Div 1 CentralNorth Greenford United 0 Northwood 12015: The Woods went to near-

neighbours North Greenford United and a narrow 1-0 success earned them maximum points for the second time in four days and their best start to a campaign since 2008. They started the match with plenty of confidence behind them and were soon dominant, knocking the ball around neatly on the zippy surface after some recent rain. Rob Hastings saw a lot of the ball in the early stages and notched the first effort on goal when he angled a first-time shot towards the near-post but alert goalkeeper Ricardo Diniz reacted quickly to push the ball wide of the post. After nine minutes Andy Lomas slipped a neat ball wide to Hastings who whipped in a dangerous cross but no-one was quite able to get a touch. The Woods were still looking strong and being patient with their approach and they were almost rewarded on 25 minutes as Stead played Nicholas into space, and he let fly with a great strike that just missed the top corner. Another bit of a slalom run from Nicholas saw him get forward well and then cut the ball for Hastings but the ball can-noned off his shin and went wide once again. North Greenford had hardly had a look in after half an hour, but they did start to settle more and after 35 minutes Sandro Costa managed to get

Pre-season friendlyHemel Hempstead 1Northwood 2 1977: Northwood gained a fine vic-

tory against lsthmian Leaguers Hemel Hempstead, despite being without defensive regulars Martin O’Donnell and Norman Heslop. It was skipper Alan Merison who blunted the home club’s attack with a great performance, ably supported by new boy Peter Carter and full backs Tim Lenahan and John Harman. The first half saw the Woods taking their opponents apart with goals from Martin Ellis and Roger Livingstone. Ellis especially created havoc with his surging runs, latching onto midfield pass-ing from Harvey, Tidd and Castella.Northwood lost the edge after the break with a reshuffled side, and Hemel pulled one back ten minutes from time.Northwood: Dave Russell, John Harman, Tim Lenahan, Alan Merison, Peter Carter, Robin Tidd, Ian Harvey, Dave Manley, Phil Castella, Martin Ellis, Gary Cooper, subs: Roger Livingstone, Pat Coburn, Eddie Hall.

Pre-season friendlyRuislip Manor 3Northwood 11990: Garfield Blackman showed he

had not lost that old goal touch, scoring in a 3-1 defeat in a friendly at Ruislip Manor – Andy Skiers, Church and Chris Ball netted for Manor – and net-ting in the 4-2 win over Penn & Tylers in midweek, with other goals from Greg Phillips (penalty), Tim Vincent (penalty) and Stuart Baldwin. Northwood are looking to make it third time lucky

under Alan Merison, having finished fourth in the Greene King Spartan League in his first season as manager and second last season.

“This is a pressure year for the club, and it is pres-sure we welcome” says Merison, who has signed Adrian Smith, formerly of Slough, Hendon and Kingsbury, and Tony Thomas from Hanwell. The club’s success over the past two years has certainly improved Meri-son’s chances of strength-ening the side in their bid to reach the Vauxhall League “Two years ago it was difficult to get play-ers to come to Northwood, but now we can attract players” he said.

Pre-season friendlyKingsbury Town 3Northwood 31998: An entertaining match saw

Northwood achieve a deserved draw while blood-ing some young players. The blend of youth and experience certainly appeared to be working well in the 18th minute, when the visitors opened the scoring. An excellent cross from the experienced Paul Webb was converted by young Richard Morton with a well-placed header.Northwood extended their lead when a great move, involving Morton and Tony Sibanda, was finished by another youngster, Scott Fitzgerald. The home side then made it 2-1, before Northwood restored their two-goal advantage when Morton crossed for Fitzgerald to head home his second of the match. After half-time Northwood conceded a penalty, which was converted despite Peter Lawrence’s brave attempt to save it.

Ken Green takes a look back at the Woods’ fortunes on 11th August during the club’s history

North Greenford had hardly had a look in after half an hour, but they did start to settle more and after 35 minutes Sandro Costa managed to get

forward, cutting in from the left and produced a firm strike that Woods goalkeeper Chris Haigh had to get across to and push it away. Having not managed to get the goal their first-half performance had deserved, the Woods had to maintain their tempo after the break and again they started brightly with Lomas hitting a long-range effort straight at the ‘keeper. Stead then tried his luck with another shot from distance and this time it was dipping in before Diniz showed good agility to push it over the bar. But the important goal finally came on 53 minutes as Nicholas combined with Lomas to knock in a deep cross from the left and Hastings raced in to squeeze a header inside the near post. Diniz, who had already needed treatment having slipped and fallen awkwardly a couple of times, had gone down again in his effort to save the header and he was re-placed by substitute goalkeeper Cristian Pal. It was after 78 minutes that the home side came closest to notching an equal-iser with George Moore knock-ing in a good free-kick and Humaid flicked on a header from close-range that looked destined for the net until Haigh produced a fine reflex save to push the ball over the top. Northwood recorded a historic first win against Chelsea as they lifted the Pete

Barry Memorial Trophy at a sun-drenched Chestnut Avenue. Chelsea fielded a development team which featured a number of youth internationals and would provide a stern test for a Northwood squad in the early stages of their pre-season preparations under new manager Dean Barker.

Woods warmed to their task and opened the scoring on 11 minutes as Miguel Matos sent over a hanging cross which was headed home by James Ewington. Chelsea looked to respond and threatened through Charlie Brown and George McEachan but Northwood goalkeeper Luke Sheldrick was on hand to deny both and protect his side’s lead.

Northwood continued to ask questions in an impressive first-half display and Ewington went close to increasing the lead but was unable to lift the ball over the advancing Karlo Ziger in the Chelsea goal. And Ben Pattie was the next to go close as his low shot flew narrowly wide of the target. Woods’ rearguard, well marshalled by captain Carl Pearce, was coping comfortably with what the visitors had to offer and Sheldrick continued to enjoy a fine afternoon on his Northwood debut as he saved bravely at the feet of Brown.

Chelsea made a number of changes during the half-time break and they were soon on the offensive after the resumption as Sheldrick turned Jacob Maddox’s shot round the post before the Australian stopper produced another fine save to deny Daishawn Redan. Northwood proceeded to make a number of substitutions as Barker sought to give his whole squad a run out and the changes coupled with the stifling heat slightly interrupted the flow of their play. However, Woods continued to look comfortable with Sheldrick on hand once again in a rare moment of danger as he tipped Redan’s headed effort over the crossbar.

Chelsea never really looked like getting back into the game with a couple of half chances going astray and Northwood were able to navigate the remainder of the match to run out deserved winners on a highly satisfactory afternoon for Barker and his evolving squad.

The Woods stepped up their pre-season preparations as they pitted themselves

against fellow step 4 opponents for the first time. Woods were quickly into their stride with Callum Ferguson rattling the woodwork with a 25 yard effort before James Ewington intercepted an attempted back-pass but the angle was too tight as he shot into the side-netting.

And it was no surprise as Northwood took the lead on nine minutes when Ben Pattie latched onto Emmanuel Melford-Rowe’s floated ball into the box to calmly rolling the ball past keeper Paul Varnica for his seventh pre-season goal. However, the lead lasted less than a minute as the Ducks punished some slack defending with Gary Jones heading home the equaliser.

Woods continued to carry an attacking threat with Pattie trying his luck with a couple of long range efforts while Melford-Rowe dragged his shot wide following a strong run the United box. At the other end, Coalan Doyle had to deal with a shot from Harry Jones while Aaron Berry might have done better after being afforded a free header.

The play proceeded to flow from end to end for the remainder of an entertaining opening period; Pattie, Ben Andreos and Jerome Slew having opportunities for the hosts while Doyle was on hand to deny Harry Jones.

Having finished the opening period on the front foot, Woods would have been hoping to kick on after the restart. However, three minutes into the second half, Woods’ defence allowed Jamie Keen time and space to pick his spot and put the Ducks ahead.

Northwood proceeded to create a plethora of chances as they looked to get back into the game with Pattie, Ewington and Andreos all going close. But any hopes Woods had of getting back into the game were further damaged as Berry converted a 64th minute penalty after Ferguson was penalised.

To their credit, Northwood continued to threaten with some incisive attacking play, Kweku Conrad-Lucan being denied by a couple of smart saves. At the other end, Doyle capped a fine debut with a couple of tremendous saves of his own.

The Woods Under 18s are again playing in the Isthmian Youth League West Division this

season, guided by Mark Fox and Richard Elderfield (pictured), and have been working hard in the run-up to the new campaign.

Pre-season friendlies started with a game against an experienced mens’ team in Kodak, who play in the Middlesex County League. It was a hard-fought encounter, which Kodak edged 2-0; action from the game is pictured below.

Next up was a game against Cockfosters Under 18s, and the Woods 18s secured a 6-0 victory, with Connor Maher netting a hat-trick. Also on the scoresheet were Jordan Coles, Ayoub Enajar and Ayo Fasanya.

Last week, youngsters enjoyed a good 3-1 win against Harefield United, Femi Azeez (2) and Connor Maher finding the net for the Woods.

The lads had a game against Uxbridge at Honeycroft last Wednesday (after this programme went to the printers), and you can see their remaining friendlies opposite; then it’s quickly into Isthmian Youth League and FA Youth Cup fixtures.

Good luck to the squad for a successful season, and we will bring regular updates about their progress in the matchday programme – as long as the information is forthcoming!

THE NEW SEASON

There was a certain relief walking out of NLP Towers at 9:30pm last Saturday night.

Another summer had been negotiated, August is here and competitive football is finally back.

The off-season is a busy one for us as we aim to keep producing engaging articles people will enjoy reading and, I hope, we have once again managed to do that.

While there might not be a full programme of matches for a few weeks, there’s always something going on in Non-League football once the regular season finishes at the end of April.

The play-offs get into full swing immediately, then there’s all the finals to cover, restructuring, league constitutions, league constitutions part two, transfers, fixtures, FA Cup, Trophy and Vase draws and, eventually, pre-season matches.

But there’s nothing quite like that first Saturday of the new campaign. Where everyone turns up, level on points, full of hope and ambition, with fans wondering, ‘Could this be our year?’

New players have been signed, stands have had a lick of paint and there’s grass in all the goalmouths – although this year much of it will be parched! I imagine there will be some expensive water bills dropping on the doormats of clubs in the near future as groundsmen battle against the heat.

Of course, we’ve had the World Cup to tick us over too and with England going deep into the competition, the excitement and feel-good factor has been palpable. Non-League football can really benefit from the national side having a good competition too.

And there was plenty to be proud of for this level of the game with Jordan Pickford’s loan spells at Darlington and Alfreton taking up many column inches, along with Nick Pope’s Bury Town beginning and the well-told tale of Jamie Vardy. Who knows where the players kicking off over the coming weeks will end up in a few years’ time.

That’s one of the exciting parts of this time of year. It’s all ahead of us now. The surprises, the shocks, the Cup runs – over the coming nine months stories and memories will unfold for everyone. We’ll enjoy covering every kick. Good luck!

PRE-SEASON 2018

SIN BINS

Could we see the use of Sin Bins throughout the Non-League Pyramid in the future?

Last season the FA trialled the punishment across 31 leagues at various levels and this year that will be expanded with the plan for every Step 7 and below league to use them from 2019-20.

The FA chose to use sin bins solely for dissent. Did you know that one in four yellow cards is given for that offence? And last season’s Pilot showed a significant reduction of 38 per cent.

It seems to be tackling the problem.

The hope is sin bins will change behaviour because it will have an immediate impact. Backchat will see a player spend 10 minutes on the sidelines (eight minutes for games of 80 minutes or less) and will harm the team straightaway, rather than receive a booking and carry on.

The FA’s Head of Judicial Services, Mark Ives, answered questions on the system as part of our monthly NLP column with the governing body.

He explained how the FA are governed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) when it comes to laws of the game. At the moment, they are only allowed to introduce it at the grass-roots level.

But should that change, I wonder if we’ll see it higher up the ladder. If it works, which it seems to, that can only be a good thing.

Head of Media CRAIG WHITEHEAD

What an exciting summer it has been on and off the pitch for Northwood FC! I have been appointed as the club’s first ever Head of Media and we have some exciting plans for the upcoming season.

We have already re-launched WOODSTV and throughout the season will be bringing you more videos. The aim is to provide a variety of content through Youtube and I have moved to appoint Marlon Bass to help and assist with this.

Between Marlon and I, on home matchdays we will be recording the games, post-match interviews, features and much more for you to view on your phone, tablet or computer! We are trialling some other features which if they work will also be published to Youtube so keep your eyes peeled at home games.

In addition to this, we have started planning for some behind the scenes videos and legends videos, speaking to former players about life at Northwood FC, what was their favourite game, along with other questions, and these will be published throughout the season.

Since I came on board, we have increased the club’s social media presence by pushing more content out through Twitter, launching a Facebook and Instagram

page and these will greatly increase the club’s reach not only within the online world but within the local community. This is all done to give the club a greater standing and hopefully to attract a few new fans and sponsors.

I have established a link with a local university, UFCB based in Wembley, which provides undergraduate and postgraduate football and sports degrees and will hopefully provide us with more students looking to gain knowledge and experience within the sporting industry. One student from here has already joined our team; Vishal Thakrar will be assisting the club with marketing and social media. Vishal will be looking at how the club can market themselves better and we hope to announce some exciting news regarding this soon.

I and the rest of the team are excited to get going with the season, and show you some of the work we have been planning over the summer. It’s all looking like a very exciting season ahead and we are hoping for three points today against Tooting and Mitcham!

TODAY’S FIXTURES Manny Duku, who last season broke Hayes & Yeading United goalscoring records with 39 goals in all competitions, 32 in the League, recently signed for League Two Cheltenham Town.

The Dutch-born striker joined United from Southern Premier side Banbury United in the summer of 2017, having previously played for Chesham United and Kings Langley. Duku follows in the footsteps of Greenwich Borough striker Mohamed Eisa, who joined the Robins in July last year and went on to score 25 league goals.

Hanwell Town, under new manager Chris Moore, have brought in several signings. These include centre forward Marcus Mealing, who previously turned out for Thatcham Town, Maidenhead United, and Marlow. Striker Gareth Chendlik also signed, previously playing for Dorking Wanderers, Tooting & Mitcham United, Harrow Borough and Egham Town.

Former Wealdstone, Chalfont St Peter and AFC Hayes midfielder Dean McDonnell was joined at Hanwell by another midfielder,

Charlie Barton, previously at Marlow, and ex-Northwood striker Louis Bircham from AFC Dunstable, for whom he scored four times against his new club last season.

Another new manager was announced at South Park, who appointed Mick Sullivan to the helm. He succeeded Malcolm Porter, who stood down from the role due to increasing business commitments. Sullivan has achieved promotion from the Bostik South as manager of Leatherhead and assistant-manager of Merstham in recent seasons.

We were sad to hear of the passing of Ashford Town (Middlesex) Chairman Dave Baker during the summer, at the age of 72. Dave first joined Ashford as Reserve Team Manager in the 80’s and was hands on from the start. He moved on to become 1st Team manager at both Feltham and Chertsey Town but returned to Ashford some 10 years after leaving, to join the Committee, later becoming Chairman. He also became the Board Room chef where his after match casseroles became well know to visiting club officials and match officials.
