PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

February was a busy month for our chapter with classes. We had the pleasure of having Carol Spohn with us for one evening and three full days. The two classes I attended I found fun and relaxing, while learning. And also, our workshop by Alise Duerr was

a sweet Ducky with an Iris, in colored pencil. Alise shared a technique used by some pencil artists that help create a photo type end result, for our future reference. We appreciate the sharing of this information Alise. March we will have our chapter workshop the 7th, as well as a free class by Stephanie Pooler on March 14th who has brought us a project from our national SDP conference. Be sure to see details in this Newsletter! Spring Fling is just around the corner and many are working on their tables, selling tickets for the luncheon, as well as selling tickets for the special drawing. ~ Debi Crook

CAROL SPOHN SEMINAR REVISTED…

DAO members who attended the Carol Spohn seminar sessions were absolutely delighted with Carol’s personal touches, teaching presence, and unique artistic approach. Beginning with her Thursday evening “give back” (to DAO members) “Quirky Birds” workshop, continuing through Carol’s Valentine’s Day presentation of “By the Fence” water color, on to Saturday’s specially designed “Hibiscus Batik”, and wrapping up Sunday with the multi-media “Yellow Bird”, DAO members enjoyed a

“special artistic value.” “Quirky Birds” card- making workshop was a supplies-only workshop presentation. On Saturday, Carol provided extra rice paper to create “mini batik” personalized cards. On Sunday, Carol brought numerous multi-media materials with her to share with students. But, more important than the obvious dollar value were the skill-building opportunities. Each project brought unique skill-stretching techniques, starting with “Quirky Birds” on Thursday evening, where we learned to doodle and find objects over abstract “splotches” of paint. Despite the earnest aspects described above, our four seminar sessions were fun, relaxing, and easygoing. Carol, we were sad to see you go. We hope you enjoyed your brief stay in warm, sunny Central Florida.

~Dianne Case

Following the seminar with Carol, we asked her for some advice. Editor: “Carol, we learned a lot about you at your website, www.carolspohn.com. Do you have any personal tips for painters on their artistic journey?” Carol: “From the personal development standpoint, do something every day. If you are pursuing painting as a business, promote yourself and do the work! Nowadays, I can spend the day trying. Remember, you are not creating a masterpiece [on any one day]; you are creating art!” Editor: “Carol, what are you looking forward to in the coming year?” Carol: “The artistic trip to Italy in September, and then to France in another year. Lots of travel. I really enjoy being able to devote myself to my art, these days.”

SPOTLIGHT ON NOW-ICONIC FLORIDA PAINTERS

This vibrant, untitled landscape by the late artist Harold Newton is on display at the Orlando Museum of Art as part of a new exhibition.

I remember being transfixed when I first learned about the Florida High-waymen during a 2001 talk by pho-tographer and author Gary Monroe of Daytona Beach, who called the paint-ers “perhaps the last great untold sto-ry about modern Florida.” These days their work is considered iconic, and Monroe did much to bring the Highwaymen story to light… Now, in collaboration with Orlando Museum of Art curator, Hansen Mulford, Monroe has curated an exciting new exhibition of Highwaymen paintings at OMA, titled “Living Color: The Art of the Highwaymen”. It brings together 100 paintings from five private collections.

The Orlando Museum of Art, 2416 N. Mills Ave., presents “Living Color: The Art of the Highwaymen” through May10.

As Newsletter Editor, I had the pleasure of asking Dianne Case and Carol their impressions of the four seminar sessions. Dianne: “I found that with some of the projects, I struggled, especially with the “Quirky Birds”. But, it was a real fun, enjoyable challenge!” Carol: “Nobody gave up! The multimedia was a good choice for the last day, as a laid back way to wrap things up. I was proud of the cards everyone completed on Thursday evening.” Dianne: “One of our members was a bit reluctant to do the ‘Quirky Birds’ – it was so loose. But, the more she played, the more she enjoyed the project!” Carol: “The ‘bling’ was a great addition to the creation of the ‘Quirky Birds’ and cards.” [Thanks for the idea, Lyn Williams!] Dianne: “Apart from project-specific techniques, we all learned so many ideas, especially about finishing our projects for display or framing.”

Friday afternoon. What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than by being creative?

Saturday’s seminar session was the “Hibiscus Batik” which Carol specially designed, based on a photo of a hibiscus bloom in Dianne Case’s front yard!

WORKSHOP TEACHER GUIDELINES

One of the key aims of our monthly workshops is to develop the skills of each participant, in order to promote greater enjoyment of painting. Toward that end, teachers are urged to exercise the following guidelines.

1. Explain the use of your medium, and how is best applied to the surface for your project.

2. Describe which brushes work best for the application of medium.

3. Teaching of any special technique (e.g. line work, floating, dry brushing, etc.) should be demonstrated, to show how the technique is best used for your project. Keep a practice board at your side to show, on-screen, how the skill is done.

4. Since we have new painters and we are trying to encourage both chapter membership and interest in painting, be especially mindful of the newest painters and their needs.

5. Circulate throughout the class, check on the progress of each person, and provide individual assistance to the extent possible.

6. Ask if anyone needs assistance, periodically, during your class.

7. Be mindful of your students’ painting pace; ask if everyone is ready to move on. Give an extra few moments if necessary.

8. Ask the class if they need a break.

9. Ask what time would be good for a lunch break.

Page 7: DECORATIVE ARTISTS OF ORLANDO · 2020-02-21 · DECORATIVE ARTISTS OF ORLANDO MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER CHAPTER WEBSITE: NEXT CHAPTER MEETING: SATURDAY, March 7, 2020 American Legion

Sunday’s multimedia “Yellow Bird” (and one red one) provided lots of opportunity for individualized creativity to be brought to each artist’s project.

All smiles at the conclusion of a long, successful, fulfilling weekend! Great job, ladies! Thanks for sharing your awesome talents with the Decorative Artists of Orlando, Carol!

A CHAT WITH DAO MEMBER, LYN WILLIAMS

At the February 1st Chapter Meeting Show & Tell, Lyn Williams shared her awesome sketch book from her August 25th – September 1st trip: ”French Alps – Painting with Kathie George”. As Newsletter Editor, I thought it would be fun and informative to talk more with Lyn about her trip! Lyn explained she

had studied with Kathie George previously, and was eager to enjoy some painting in an iconic, picturesque locale. She and a friend first flew into Geneva Switzerland and spent 2 days touring that European city. Then, they joined Kathie and fellow students at

STUDENT GUIDELINES

1. Be prepared! Bring your supplies. Make sure you have any special supplies requested by the teacher, and bring a PREPARED SURFACE if not provided. Trying to basecoat a surface right before the class is to begin does not give the paint time to cure properly and may make your painting experience more difficult.

2. Don’t expect your neighbor to be your instructor. Ask the teacher for help. This reduces the chatter so everyone can hear the teacher. You might be missing out on important instructions.

3. Use every class as a learning experience regardless of the level of difficulty. Every new technique learned needs practice.

4. Let the teacher know if you are unfamiliar with a technique or medium featured. This will let the teacher know you may need a little extra help during class.

5. Bring an extra surface or practice board you can practice on before painting on your project if you know ahead of time that you are challenging your skill level.

6. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you are learning new techniques during the class. It is difficult to master a new technique the first time.

And – PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!SAVE

Page 8: DECORATIVE ARTISTS OF ORLANDO · 2020-02-21 · DECORATIVE ARTISTS OF ORLANDO MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER CHAPTER WEBSITE: NEXT CHAPTER MEETING: SATURDAY, March 7, 2020 American Legion

Combloux, Fr, in the French Alps. Their days were spent learning and practicing water color technique – some studio, some plein air. Each student recorded their experiences – and adventures - in their individual sketch book. The sketch book served multiple functions – artistic, personal, and as a travel record. Lyn beautifully described the locale, noting that each of the students’ hotel rooms at Combloux had a magnificent view of Mont Blanc (see photo). During their stay at Combloux, they traveled to Chamonix, Fr, taking a break from painting. There, one can travel by cable car high above Chamonix to spectacular views of Mont Blanc, the highest peak of the Alps and the Matterhorn in the distance. Or, one can trek down steps to explore the equally awe-inspiring interior of glaciers “populating” these European Alps! Lyn’s 2nd part of her artistic journey moved on to Annecy, Fr, also in the French Alps. This town is referred to as the Venice of France for it’s picturesque main canal through the old town. It is also known for picturesque cobbled streets and pastel-

colored houses. Here, Lyn and the other students settled into an absorbing studio setting. Summing up, Lyn said the trip was about “the whole experience” – the opportunity to learn from a fantastic art teacher, meeting the other students, learning the local people and their culture, learning about the spectacular geographic surroundings. And, of course there was the food… think Brie melted over a thick slice of French bread… mmm… “My husband thinks I go to paint; it’s really for fun,” Lyn said with a laugh! Thanks for sharing, Lyn.

HELPFUL HINTS Wood Finish Scratch Remover: Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts boiled linseed oil. Place in a capped bottle and shake well before each use. Pour a small amount onto a soft lint-free cotton cloth. Rub firmly into the finish to be treated, in a circular motion. Allow to dry overnight. Buff lightly when dry. You can actually use a variety of vegetable oils, but boiled linseed oil is formulated to dry into a hard finish. Be sure to cap your mixture tight-ly. Dispose of the oily cloth by drying in open air and placing in the trash.

HELPFUL HINTS Acrylic Paint Fix: If you have had bot-tles of acrylic paints for awhile or some-one gave you a stash and it is lumpy, here is a fix. Cut a small piece of nylon hose, place over the open paint bottle top and screw on the lid. Shake the paint well. Flip up the lid and squeeze through the nylon onto your palette. A simple way to save you from a lot of frustration, and allows you to use up that otherwise good bottle of paint.
