    1/11

This video is just shots of Fionn Regan playing guitar and

singing, in different locations. He is wearing trousers, a shirt,

and a waistcoat, which is normal, everyday clothes for him. The

lighting is just the normal lighting for each place that he is in,

and the music is recorded in each place, so the sound quality

changes with each shot, and there is ambient sound. The video

starts with a long shot showing a lift, and there is ambient

sound, and also very faint music.

The lift doors open, and Fionn is stood in it, playing guitar,

looking at his guitar. As the lift opens, the music gets louder,

because its being recorded as its filmed, so there is no longer

the lift doors blocking the sound. The lighting is bright and

    unnatural.

The next shot is a long shot of him, stood under an archway in

what looks like a train station. The lighting is quite dim, and he

is still playing guitar. It changes to a mid shot of him, still in the

same place. A car goes past just in front of the camera, and

there are people walking past, some of them go in front of the

camera. This makes the place look more natural, not like it's all

been set up. It could even have been filmed on a normal day,and not really set up.

The next shot is a mid shot of him in a place with slot

machines. The lighting is dim, and the lights from the machines

are bright. This time, he is looking at the camera, and he starts

    to sing.

He sings the first line of the song, and as he opens his mouth to

sing the second line, the location changes again. The next

location is a church. It is a long shot of him sat in one of the

    4/11

church pews. He sings the next two lines, and the sound is very

different, as churches have different acoustics to gambling

places. The only lighting is from a window at the back of the

    church.

Then he is by the sea. It is a mid shot of him, with only water

and sky in the background, and the wind is moving his hair and

clothes. The next shot is a long shot of him on a farm, withcows in the background. You can hear the cows and some

birds. The shot changes half way through a line, so the change

in sound is very obvious. The lighting is natural sunlight. Then

there's a long shot of him in a dimly lit car park. It moves to a

mid shot of him in the same place, and he is looking straight at

the camera, but just playing guitar.

Next is a mid shot of him in a supermarket aisle. There is

ambient sound of people and the supermarket checkouts.

Again, the shot changes half way through a line, so the change

in sound quality is very obvious. The next shot is in front of a

line of beach huts, with the sound of the sea and seagulls. The

next shot is a close up of his face, with a bit of background. He

seems to be in a restaurant. The change in shot distancemakes the video more interesting, as it would get boring if all of

    the shots were the same.

Then he is next to an indoor swimming pool, with the sound of

people and water. The shot changes half way through a line,

and then he is in a library. At one point, when he's playing

guitar and not singing, he looks behind him, at a person reading

a book. This causes the audience to look at his surroundings,

not just him. This shot goes with the song, as he sings the like 'I

    read to you on Saturdays'.

This connection between the video and the song attracts the

watcher's attention. The next shot is a mid shot in a chip shop,

then it moves to a large, fancy dining room. There are rope

barriers around some of the bits of furniture, which makes is

look like it's in a museum, which fits with one of the lines a few

second before, 'museum has closed down'.

The large room makes the sound echoey, which sounds slightlyhaunting, which (in my opinion) goes well with Fionn Regan' s

voice and style. The next shot is a mid shot with an old wall in

the background. While he is playing guitar, a bus goes past,

between the camera and Fionn. This, again, makes it look more

natural, not set up. He sings a line while he is behind the bus.

The bus is louder than the sound, so it can't be heard well,

which adds to the natural feel. The shot then moves out, and

shows the area around where he is stood. This makes it moreinteresting, as all of the other shots that did this had moved

from a long shot to a mid shot or close up, not the other way

around. The next shot is in a forest. He is wearing the same

outfit as before but with wellies, which, again, makes it look

more natural. The next shot is in what appears to be a clock

shop. He is stood in front of a wall covered in clocks, and

behind a table covered in clocks.

The clocks take up most of the screen, and seem to be more

important that him. This is an unusual effect, as the singer is

normally considered the most important person and thing in the

videos. There is ambient sound of clocks ticking. In the next

shot, he is sat on a sofa, in a hairdressers, with someone

cutting hair in the background. Again, he only takes up a small

amount of the visible area, which makes him seem slightly

insignificant. The line 'a coastal town' goes well with many of

the previous shots, and it seems as if all the places he's been

in are in a coastal town, which is very possible. This shot is

filmed in a mirror, which is quite hard to see until the viewer

notices that all of the writing is backwards, and he is holding his

guitar as if he is left handed. The edge of the mirror is veryslightly visible.

The next shot seems to be in an old laundrette, with very dim

lighting. It is a mid shot. Then there is a mid shot of him, with a

town in the background. He seems to be on a roof. There is the

sound of a police car in the background. The next shot is him

stood in a river, he's wearing wellies again. He's only playing

guitar, and the sound of the water is quite loud.

The next and final shot is in the bird section of a pet shop. He

plays the last few chords of the song, and the birds are very

    loud.

The camera moves in closer to him, he's staring straight at it,

and looks a bit angry. After he plays the last note, he turns and

    walks away.

The shot stays on the bird for a while. What I like most about

the video is that the sound is recorded with each shot, and not

pre-recorded and put over the top. I find it interesting that he

doesn't seem to be the most important thing in the video.
