We will be starting to prepare for the coming of Christmas, thinking about meeting up with family and friends and perhaps thinking about food to prepare and decorations to arrange. We may also think about the essence of Christmas, not a perfume but what we are celebrating ... the birth of a child, a child like all others, but also unlike all others, both human and divine. A child who came not to condemn anyone, but came because he wanted to set everyone free, free from the consequences of the things which they did which were wrong, their sins. A child who amazingly loves each one of us so much, that he was prepared to die for us. A child who brought hope, love, peace and joy into the world so that our lives can be richer and warmer, and more fulfilled than would otherwise be possible. So in these Advent and Christmas seasons, may I invite you to take some time out for some quiet reflection on the essence of Christmas, perhaps by being part of the services at St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s, when we can celebrate God’s gift of love to us all, together? I look forward to seeing you all soon; I wish you a very happy Christmas and a healthy and peaceful 2016.

DECEMBER DIARY

FROM THE RECTOR As you receive this newsletter, Advent will have started and we will be looking forward to the time when we remember again how Jesus was born in lowly circumstances in Bethlehem, sadly today part of the Occupied Territories.

CHILDREN’S SOCIETY Collections at the St Mary’s and St Peter’s Carol , Crib and Christingle Services (see the panel above) will, as usual, be in aid of the Children’s Society(CS). The house collection boxes will need to be gathered in and their contents counted from early February. They may be brought to either church on 7 or 14 February or the local CS representatives (Boxted: Gill Pullen, Tel. 273804; Langham: Helen Sims, Tel. 321286) will arrange to pick them up.

LANGHAM COMMUNITY SHOP The Community Shop now has a very attractive website: www.langhamcommunityshop.

org.uk On the website you can find a mass of information, pictures, offers, news about developments and other useful bits and pieces.

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP In October, Suffolk historian Pip Wright returned to the History Group to trace the development of local newspapers in East Anglia from the 17th century to the early 1900s. At first they only contained edited reprints of items from the emerging national papers but by the mid 1700s news offices were being set up in towns and they began to carry letters and news items of local interest. From the early1800s local papers began to resemble those we buy today.

All Welcome! Langham with Boxted Churches Initiative

BOXTED WI In October members enjoyed a baking evening. In the spirit of the WI’s national centenary, they attempted recipes from a hundred years ago. The recipes were reduced to the basics in the style of a “Bake Off technical challenge”, with the bakers trying to make their products as near as possible to the original intention. In November there was an evening of flower arranging, with a demonstration by Pearl Sandys followed by members themselves creating table decorations for the coming festive season.

THE EVERGREENS The Boxted Evergreen Club’s annual general meeting was held on 28 October. All the current officers and committee members were re-elected to serve for a further year. In her report on the past year, the Chairman, Barbara Woodmason, noted that membership had declined in recent years, an experience shared with many similar clubs, whose style did not seem fashionable at the moment. The Evergreens have much to offer and they welcome new members. You do not have to be old (or even bold) to enjoy their varied programme of meetings and visits. Have a word with Linda Tralau on 272710.

LANGHAM WI The room was packed for the November meeting, with several guests attending. The cheery theme was a Winter Dinner of three courses, all of which were sampled. Rona Hammond offered a tasty tomato soup, while Carolyn Blacklock added a transatlantic theme with a colourful stuffed squash demonstration, of which the sausage version was tasted. With coffee there was a rich chocolate fruit cookie by Sylvia Hemming. Everyone went away with a copy of the recipes. The diary is very full: after the Bury Christmas Fayre in November there are invitations to Mile End WI Carol Service and to the Boxted WI. In December Langham’s own Catherine Hinchcliffe will be singing at the Christmas Party. The New Year meal will be at Colchester Institute and there will be a theatre trip to “Sister Act”.

HEATING OIL SCHEME Orders for the delivery of domestic heating oil under the group scheme must be placed in person at the Langham Community Shop by 5 pm on Wednesday 2 December. The minimum order is 500 litres and there is a registration charge of £2 (£1 for Shop volunteers). Delivery is expected within 5 working days of 2 December.

Solar Farm Next Energy Capital, the new owners of the solar farm have paid the first instalment of the obligatory “Community Benefit” payment. Road footways The possibility of footways on the south side of School Road and in Park Lane from “Chimneys” to Wick Road will be discussed with the Local Highways Panel. Projector and screen The Council will buy a projector (£785) and screen (£172). Children’s Playground The gate nearer the School Road entrance will be reopened. Bus Timetable It is proposed to axe the 11.10am service to and the 12.30pm from Colchester. Broadband The cost of linking the Ardleigh and Dedham exchanges to super-fast broadband is estimated to be £40,000.

BOXTED SPORTS PAVILION

The Boxted Neighbourhood Development Plan consultations showed that many people miss having a local pub. The Boxted Parish Council is considering restoring the bar at the Sports Pavilion as a facility for the whole village and is looking for:

- community-minded organisations or individuals to run the bar to benefit the community; the Council would receive a monthly 'rental' payment, with any profit accruing to the ‘tenant’; or

- a volunteer to work behind the bar for perhaps one or two shifts a month, all profits going to improving amenities in Boxted.

Proposals should be sent to the Clerk to the Council by 11 December, so that they can be considered by the Council in January. If you would like to view the premises or have further information, please phone the Clerk on 329019 or e-mail her at [email protected].
