ConferenCe themeKonferenzthemAThe general theme of the conference is “Geotechnics of Roads and Railways“ – as it was 50 years ago at the first DECGE. Specifically, the topics to be covered are:

• Earthworks, mainly embankments|• Compaction of soil and other granular materials

• Soil stabilization with lime, cement, etc.

• Deep soil improvement

• Geotechnics of road and railtrack structures (from subgrade to base or ballast, resp.)

• Freezing-thawing problems of roads, railways

• Geosynthetics in road and railway engineering

• Use of waste material and industrial byproducts for roads and embankments

Als Tagungsthema wurde aus historischen Gründen das gleiche gewählt wie bei der ersten DECGE: „Geotechnik im Straßen- und Eisenbahnbau“. Dies bietet eine interessante Vergleichsmöglichkeit der in 50 Jahren erfolgten Entwicklungen.

Das Österreichische Nationalkomitee für Bodenmechanik und Geotechnik (im ÖIAV) beehrt sich, zur XV. Donau- Europäischen Konferenz für Geotechnik vom 9. bis 11. September 2014 in Wien einzuladen. Die Konferenz findet unter der Schirmherrschaft der international society for soil Mechanics and Geotechnical engineering (issMGe) und anderer institutionen statt.

50th AnnIVerSArY50-JährIgeS JuBIläumIn the year 1964 the Danube-European Conferences on Geotechnical engineering were founded in Vienna by the ÖiaV (austrian society of engineers and architects) with its branches for Geotechnical Engineering (Member Society of ISSMGE) and Road Engineering (Member Society of PIARC). The aim of these conferences was to bring together colleagues from East and West, from either side of the Iron Curtain. The Danube region (incl. catchment areas) has always fostered close cultural, economic and personal relations. Therefore, the vision at that time was a reunion of this region. Meanwhile, the Danube-european Conferences have proved to be a long-term success for already 50 years.

Die Donau-Europäischen Konferenzen für Geotechnik wurden im Jahre 1964 im ÖIAV (Österreichischer ingenieur- und architekten-Verein) von dessen fachgruppen (Österreichisches Nationalkomitee für Grundbau und Bodenmechanik und Forschungsgesellschaft für das Straßenwesen) ins Leben gerufen. Ziel war die Zusammen-führung von ingenieurkollegen aus ost und West über die barriere des eisernen Vorhanges hinweg. Der Donau-raum (inklusive der Einzugsgebiete der Donau) hatte seit jeher enge kulturelle, wirtschaftliche und zwischenmensch-liche Beziehungen. Die damalige Vision im ÖIAV war eine geistige und kulturelle Wiedervereinigung dieser großen region.

fees for delegates include the conference materials (Proceedings), admission to all scientific sessions and the technical exhibition as well as the Welcome Cocktail, coffee-breaks and light lunches during the conference.

In der Konferenzgebühr für Teilnehmer sind die Konferenzunterlagen, der Besuch der Vortragseinheiten und der fachausstellung sowie der begrüßungscocktail, Kaffeepausen und Mittagsbuffets während der Konferenz inkludiert.

The accompanying persons program includes a sightseeing tour through Vienna on tuesday afternoon. on Wednesday a guided tour will lead to beautiful medieval monasteries, peacefully situated in the middle of the Wienerwald („Vienna Woods“): Cistercian Abbey Stift Heiligenkreuz and Carmelitine Monastery Mayerling - situated in the former Jagdschloss („Hunting Lodge“) of Crown Prince Rudolph.

Das Programm für Begleitpersonen beinhaltet am Dienstag Nachmittag eine ge-führte Tour durch Wien. Am Mittwoch werden Sehenswürdigkeiten im Wienerwald besichtigt (Stift Heiligenkreuz und Karmel Mayerling - ehemaliges Jagdschloss von Kronprinz Rudolph).

The social program includes the Welcome Cocktail on Tuesday September 9, 2014 and the Conference Banquet – given by the Mayor of the City of Vienna - which will take place in the picturesque City Hall on Wednesday, September 10, 2014.

the technical visits will lead to actual construction sites of the largest tunnel projects in and around Vienna. The Destinations are the Koralm Base Tunnel, Semmering Base Tunnel (both part of the Trans European Rail Network Gdańsk - Venice) and the extension of the Viennese underground line u1. Details will be given later.

Die Fachexkursionen führen zu den aktuell größten Tunnelbauprojekten im Raum Wien und Umgebung - dem Koralmtunnel, dem Semmering Basistunnel (beide sind Teil der Trans-Europäischen Zugstrecke Danzig - Venedig) sowie der Ver-längerung der Wiener U-Bahnlinie U1. Die Konferenz wird im Hauptgebäude der Technischen Universität Wien (Karlsplatz 13, 1040 Wien) stattfin-den, wo K. Terzaghi am meisten zur Entwicklung der modernen Bodenmechanik beitrug.
