Decentralized Coordinated Control of Photovoltaic
Power Inverters in a Residential Microgrid
Master Thesis
ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and au-tomation technologies that enable utility and in-dustry customers to improve performance whilelowering environmental impact. The ABB Groupof companies operates in around 100 countriesand employs about 145,000 people whereof6,850 in Switzerland.ABB Corporate Research, in close collabora-tion with ABB business areas, is developing thefoundations for the next generation of ABB prod-ucts. In Switzerland, ABB Corporate Research, located in the proximity of Zurich, employs 130scientists from 25 countries with expertise inpower electronics, automation and power tech-nologies for manufacturing, consumer and pro-cess industries as well as utilities.
Our Control and Power Electronics groups per-form cutting-edge research in advanced controland estimation for electromechanical systems, power converters and energy systems. We areoffering a master thesis project in collaborationwith the ETH Automatic Control laboratory. Theproject provides the opportunity of working onreal-world projects in an international team of in-novative scientists. You will be able to gain experience in control en-gineering, working in a motivating and creativeresearch environment. We expect you to exe-cute challenging project tasks independently butunder competent supervision.
Your tasks: Investigate and implement decen-tralized control methods to achieve coordinatedactive power curtailment of the PV inverters inresidential applications for overvoltage preven-tion. This includes: read research papers, im-plement controller methods on a Matlab Simulinkenvironment. Write a report and possibly paperson the achieved results.
The requirements: currently pursuing a degreein electrical engineering or a similar subject withcompletion of at least 4 semesters; official en-rollment is essential; good control knowledge(state-space) and signal processing proficiencyin Matlab and Simulink; basic understanding ofcircuit theory would be beneficial; proficiencyin English, spoken and written (working lan-guage); quick learner with the motivation to tryout cutting-edge technology; ability to think con-ceptually and express ideas clearly and convinc-ingly.
