Notes From Our Pastor

Dear parish family,

As we continue to celebrate the Christmas mysteries, we are reminded today of the shining example of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It is a day to ask God to help imitate the holy family in practicing the virtues of family life and the bonds of charity. Today’s first reading from the Book of Sirach highlights the importance of first loving and honoring one’s parents, and the blessings that flow from it. Saint Paul, in the second reading, exhorts us as brothers and sisters in the Lord, to lovingly bear with and forgive one another. Obedience and deference to each other requires great humility. It’s not about getting someone to submit to you, but rather, out of love for God, humbling yourself and submitting yourself to the other person. In the Gospel today, Joseph and Mary take the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to be presented and consecrated to the Lord. They did their best to be obedient to all God asked them to do. They were obedient and faithful Jews who deeply loved God and strove to be faithful and obedient and they wanted to pass that faith, that love for God, on to their son. They lovingly cared for the child Jesus, brought him up to walk in the ways of the Lord, and lived in love and unity with God and one another. They sought to be a holy family... united in love and faith. Their life together as a family was marked by holiness and love, and it is the example after which all Christian Families are to pattern their lives. We are to imitate the example of the Holy Family by striving to live in love and unity with God and with one another. We are called to holiness, in easy and in difficult times, in good and in bad. By making our love for God, and obedience to Him a priority in life, this call to holiness becomes possible even in difficult moments of family life. Prayer is also necessary if we want to live in unity and in love with God and one another. The Catholic Christian Family should be a place where each member is growing in faith, where each member is loving and supporting one another to be the best they can be, where each member shines as a light before others. Praying together regularly, and attending Sunday Mass together, needs to be a normal

part of family life. It enables us to courageously live our faith, and it motivates us to do good. In short, by putting God first, by loving and supporting one another and by praying and attending Mass together families are more likely to stay together, to be holy, to shine as a light before others, to do good, and to know God’s gifts of peace and joy in their lives and in their home... making them able to share those gifts with others. Blessings to all our families, Father Noesen

recognize the infant Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel’s hope for redemption. In Simeon’s words we find a prediction of Mary’s witnessing of Jesus’ death on the cross. The Canticle of Simeon, also called by its Latin name, Nunc Dimitis, is prayed at night prayer, or compline, during the Liturgy of the Hours.

Sunday Reflection

Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the Temple in accordance with the Law of Moses.

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family. This celebration is assigned to the Sunday within the octave of Christmas. The Gospel for today is taken from the Gospel according to Luke and is part of Luke’s Infancy Narrative.

Today’s Gospel describes the presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple and shows Joseph and Mary as devout Jews, following the prescriptions of the Law of Moses. The Gospel alludes to several aspects of the Law of Moses: circumcision, the dedication of the firstborn son to the Lord, and the purification of a woman after childbirth.

According to the Law of Moses as presented in the Book of Leviticus, a woman was considered ritually unclean during her menstrual period and for a prescribed period of time following the birth of a child. After the birth of a son, a woman was considered ritually unclean for 40 days. After the birth of a daughter, a woman was considered unclean for 80 days. In order to be restored to ritual purity, a Jewish woman performed the appropriate rites of purification and made the prescribed ritual offering.

Today’s Gospel notes that Jesus was circumcised on the eighth day after his birth, in accordance with the Mosaic Law. At that time, he was called Jesus, the name he was given by the angel Gabriel. On the 40th day after Jesus’ birth, Mary performed the appropriate purification rites and made her offering at the Temple. Although the Law of Moses required an offering of a lamb, those who could not afford a lamb could substitute two turtledoves or two pigeons. In this scene, Luke identifies Joseph and Mary as being poor, and indeed throughout Luke’s Gospel, Jesus will show special concern for the poor.

Another Jewish rite referenced in this Gospel is the dedication of the firstborn son to the Lord. In remembrance of the feast of Passover, when the firstborn children of the Israelites in Egypt were saved from death, the Law of Moses prescribed that all firstborn males of Israel should be consecrated to the Lord. In this tradition, Mary and Joseph present the infant Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem.

In Jerusalem, Luke reports that Mary and Joseph encounter two devout Jews, Simeon and Anna, who

In your charity, prayers and Mass offerings, please remember those who have died. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual

light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May they and all the souls of the faithful dead rest in peace.

Amen

Now that the renovation of our church is complete, many parishioners have mentioned how they have noticed and appreciated the wonderful new improvements that have been made. We are truly grateful to all parishioners and friends who have donated to this project and continue to pay on their pledges. However, we remain 1.2 million dollars in debt. This debt needs to be paid off as soon as the parish is able. As an expression of their gratitude and faith, many have expressed a desire to be part of the great things that have happened to our parish church by offering to make memorial donations to provide the many needed items we've installed.

Memorials provide an attractive opportunity for parishioners and supporters of Assumption Parish to remember loved ones and their family in a lasting way. Through our memorial gifts, much needed items for the renewal of our church building will be provided. A memorial is your opportunity to name/dedicate an item - a way to remember or "memorialize" the living or dead. It is not the purchase of an item itself (strictly speaking). Through memorials, much needed revenue to go toward paying off our debt will be realized, while providing items not necessarily budgeted for.

Please be generous in your gifts for our new church. Allow the Lord to direct you in your generosity, and make a true sacrificial offering back to the Lord for all the good He has done for you! A list of memorials can be found on the parish website or can be picked up in the parish office following New Year's Day. If you see anything you would like to memorialize, please call or stop in the parish office. Memorials are limited and granted on a first-come, first served basis and can be paid off with an installment plan. If you would like to sponsor a memorial, have any questions, or would like to discuss your giving possibilities, please call me at the parish office.

May the Lord be praised by our sacrifice and love for our new parish Church dedicated to the glory of God. Father Noesen - Pastor

FoMO By Br. Juan Macias Marquez, O.P.

Have you ever had FoMO? I’m guessing that you have, though you probably just didn’t know that it was called that. FoMO, a new acronym begotten by the younger generation (and now officially recognized by the Oxford Dictionary), is simply the “Fear of Missing Out.” One might use the term in a way such as this, “Oh man, I had FoMO last night because I couldn’t go to the concert with all of my friends.” People often use “FoMO” in relation to social media, which has the ability to insert you psychologically into a certain setting with certain people without the actual reality of being there. Now, while the term “FoMO” has been coined by the younger generation of Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat users, people have been experiencing the “Fear of Missing Out” since long before the days of social media. We just didn’t have a name for it then.

Why do we experience FoMO? Because we are rarely satisfied with our current situation. As human beings, we’re needy creatures. I’m not just talking about the material needs of our bodies. We’re all needy at the deeper level of the heart. We need companionship, we need friends, we need love. The human heart is complicated, and “who can understand it” (Jeremiah 17:9)? In FoMO we experience the neediness of our heart, the unfulfilling lack of belonging, and it frightens us. We can be afraid that we weren’t worthy enough to receive an invite somewhere. Another fear might creep in if we couldn’t make a certain gathering and we think we could’ve been way happier if we would have been at this place with those people. Many times, though, these are lies we are perpetrating in our own minds. We far too often have a narrow view of fulfilling our own needs, which starts us on a downward spiral of negative thought. So, what is the way out of this slump?

We can look to three things to cure this uneasiness: acts of thanksgiving, the Eucharist, and the communion of saints. Having a thankful heart helps us to realize that we truly are weak and wounded creatures in need of many things. Exercising this virtue will also help us see that we’ve already been given much to be thankful for, such as the simple materials we have and the life of grace we partake in. In speaking about thanksgiving we ought to remember that the word “Eucharist” comes from Greek and means simply “thanksgiving.” So the Mass can be the best place to give thanks. During Mass, we have the gift of being surrounded by the “great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1), the saints, who show us that we are not alone and who join us in worshiping Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. How could we have Fear of Missing Out on something else when we are with the holy ones in heaven along with the whole community of believers on earth who are united by the Holy Spirit?

The Church calls this supernatural reality the communion of saints. St. Josemaría Escrivá gives us a penetrating insight into what this gift calls us to as he says, “Constantly call to mind that at every moment you are cooperating in the human and spiritual formation of those around you, and of all souls—for the blessed Communion of Saints reaches as far as that. At every moment: when you work and rest; when people see you happy or worried . . . you pray as does a child of God and the peace of your soul shows through; when people see that you have suffered, that you have wept, and you smile.”

God does not leave us orphaned. We belong to something bigger than ourselves. The opportunity for communion through prayer and the people around us gives us the grounding we need to drive out insecurity from our hearts. As we continue this Advent, this season of longing, a question comes to mind: why be somewhere else when you can rest and calm your worrisome heart in the arms of the Savior?

Consider Making a Year-End Gift to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church

or Immaculate Conception Church As the end of the year approaches, we begin to reflect upon the many blessings bestowed upon us. The end of the year also provides a great opportunity to thank God for these blessings by gifting to Assumption or Immaculate Conception church. The benefits of income tax deductions, capital gains savings and other financial benefits are significant advantages that provide an incentive to make a gift at the year-end.

There are many different ways of contributing a gift. However, two of the easiest and most direct methods to gift are donations of cash and appreciated stock or other investments. You can also make other financially advantageous gifts such as real estate, life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, will/trust bequests and IRA/retirement accounts.

For more information on how you can help make a difference by contributing a year-end gift, please contact:
