LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, It was a little over one year ago that the Church introduced a new translation of the prayers used for Mass with a revised Roman Missal. This is the book used by the priest when he presides at Mass. Recently the Center for Applied Research of the Catholic University of America released the results of a national survey of US adult self-identified Catholics. That survey revealed that seven in ten Catholics [70%] agree that the new translation of the prayers for mass “is a good thing”. Nearly a quarter disagree [30%] with this statement: Overall, I think the new translation of the Mass is a good thing. Looking further into the survey, Respondents were asked during an average Mass, would you say that you have noticed that the language of the prayers that are said during Mass have 1. Remained about the same, 2. Changed to a small extent, 3. Changed to a moderate extent, or 4. Changed to a great extent? Four in ten Respondents [40%] said they had noticed the language of these prayers had changed to a small extent, and 23% said these had changed to a moderate extent. Only 6% said they noticed changes to a great extent and 31% said that the language of these prayers had remained about the same as far as they noticed. Those who have perceived less change are those most likely to agree that the new translation is a good thing. Among those who feel the language has changed to a great extent, a majority disagree that the new translation is a good thing [65%]. So what does all this mean? I think further polling will give a clearer picture. As Catholics get use to the language sound and feel, they may become more comfortable and accepting. Language evokes response on many levels and how that plays out over time will be discovered. Many priests will say that our experience of the new translation is multi-leveled in getting use to new rhythms, words and sentence constructions. In some ways we are leading prayer in a language construction which mind-set is different than what we know and speak today. I hope that you are planning on being with the parish for the Christmas Masses. I know the music will be quite good, particularly with the choir concert Christmas eve11:30pm in Church. All are welcome, and I hope you can extend an invitation to persons in your life who may be searching for a Church home or Catholics who would like to come back home. All of us would want life to be not just a spin on the wheel of chance, but that there be meaning and purpose. Come explore this question, to discover your answer.

The Five Giving Principles In the coming weeks, as part of our ongoing Total Stewardship program, we will discuss the significance of the Ministry of Finance. Five

elements of spiritual giving—the Five Giving Principles—help us express our generosity and share in the work of ministry and service. The five established principles include the following: 1 Giving is planned. It is intentional and involves decisions made thoughtfully, in advance. 2 Giving is proportionate, a select percentage of a person’s income, no matter how substantial or how modest. 3 Giving is sacrificial. Modeled on the example of Jesus, it summons our best—not after expenses, savings or investments, but first, right off the top. 4 Giving is a free expression from the heart, neither coerced nor conditional. 5 Giving is an act of prayer, offered in thanksgiving from a heart of gratitude. Beginning next week, we will focus on each of these principles in turn and consider our financial commitments to the valuable work God provides through the ministries of our parish.
