I share it because it is a facet of the Vision of a Lakewood Graduate but also as a reminder to all of us how important empathy is needed right now. Empathy is a medicine we all need to administer in a year that has been filled with fears over COVID-19, political divisiveness, social unrest, economic hardships and students learning remotely. At the beginning of last school year, we showed a video to staff and students entitled, “Under The Surface” from The Knowledge Center. The life stories depicted in this video could be from any high school in America. I encourage you to view the video link as a reminder that we all face challenges, even more so now, that may go unseen. It is a reminder that how we react to others' frustrations, anger, fear, and challenges may be the deciding factor if they rise above or sink deeper. As we approach the holiday season and a new calendar year, I ask that you reflect on the stress that this year has brought and the impact on everyone’s emotional well-being. I encourage you to show empathy towards others and try to view life from each other’s eyes. I challenge you to brighten someone’s day with caring empathy. Wishing you all happy holidays and a safe new year with a hope that brighter days will soon be here. Sincerely, Mr. Walter

I use this quote on empathy to start this month’s Principal's Message not only for others but as a reminder for myself.

Sincerely,

Mr. Walter

Please begin adding colleges to Naviance that you have applied to or plan on applying to, along with requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation in your account.

As a reminder, we also ask that you give your teachers and counselor at least a 2-week notice when requesting to write a letter of recommendation. Please also remember to share your resume.

To All Parents and Guardians Just a reminder that although we are still in remote learning, students can have individual counseling or check in sessions with their assigned school counselor. Once we return to school, students can meet with their counselor in person. It can often be helpful for students to have someone at the school that they can talk to when feeling overwhelmed or dealing with personal struggles. If your child would like a meeting please email or call your school counselor to schedule a time during remote learning.

College Now Updates Please be sure to review the College Now flyers included in this month's Ranger Roundup outlining upcoming key events.

Happy Holidays! On behalf of our department, we would like to with you a happy holiday and a wonderful

winter break!

A New Challenge for Lakewood Sports

We were grateful to be on our courts at all, our coaches, players, parents and officials needed to navigate a new reality that required more discipline and vigilance if we wanted to keep playing.

The costs of operating athletics has increased consistently every year, but the 2020-21 season includes additional expenses (PPE, signage, etc.) necessary to fulfill COVID protocols. And despite these increased expenses, with limited spectators we aren’t able to bring in the revenue from tickets and concessions to offset them through regular means.

The Lakewood School District fee to participate in sports has been only $75 per player for over 25 years thanks to the Lakewood Athletic Boosters annual contributions of $60,000, along with an additional $100,00 per year of

Team Fundraising. We must develop more diverse and sustainable sources of funding to provide our

athletic programs the financial support they need. The Lakewood Athletic Boosters is rising to this challenge but we need our community of parents to contribute in any way they can.

● Become a Member - Annual dues go directly to support Ranger Athletics and members get discounts

while Senior Students can apply for a Booster Scholarship.

● Attend Booster Meetings - Jump on our monthly Zoom Meetings to hear what’s in store and to share

our ideas and feedback.

● Volunteer for Concessions - We’ve upgraded concessions! With our new touchscreen point of sale,

we can now take credit cards and all inventory is tallied in real time. This means setting up and closing is

MUCH FASTER than it used to be. Concessions is a fun and easy way to directly generate funds for the

school. We have also limited our food/drink options and allow only 1 or 2 people to operate a stand

while masked.

● Donate - Your tax deductible donation can be made directly to a team or sport or towards our quarterly

contribution to the Athletic Department.

● Sponsor - Our local businesses and partner organizations are featured in the LHS Stadium and LHS

Gymnasium. Promote your business or organization and show your support for our community.

Take the next step and go to www.GoLakewood.org to get involved.
