Red Rocks was perfect for me—strong academics and small classes lead by instructors with

real-world experience. Not only was it appealing, it really ignited something in me.

Saling Simon, classical pianist, RRCC alumnus, Harvard class of 2014

Saling tried a different college his freshman year, but it just didn’t click. Then he transferred to Red Rocks Community College, where he immediately found a great fit.

Inspired by his psychology instructor, Saling continued this field of study and later completed his bachelor of science in psychology at Harvard. He credits the rigorous coursework and academic support services at Red Rocks with his success.

FROM HARVEST TO GLASSInterview with Brad Page of Colorado Cider Company

Brad Page is a familiar face amongst Colorado brewers, having started in 1988 as assistant brewmaster at Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver before moving on to become a founding partner and brewmaster at Coopersmith’s Pub & Brewing in Fort Collins. Three years ago, Brad and his wife, Kathe, channeled their love of brewing into a new venture, Colorado Cider Company.

BRAVO: Brad! You’re a lifelong beer guy. How did you find yourself in the cider business?Brad: About 6-7 years ago, I was working as a brewer in Fort Collins, and Kathe and I got the idea to start making cider. We’re really drawn to the farming aspect of the business and would eventually like to move to the Western Slope, where our orchard is. BRAVO: Tell us about the orchard.Brad: It’s in Hotchkiss and we’ve planted over 3,000 trees to date. It will take them about three years to mature and yield a harvest for our ciders. BRAVO: Lakewood has a rich history in apple farming.Brad: Absolutely. Our whole country does, actually. Pilgrims brought apple trees over from England to harvest for cider, and we all grew up with the story of Johnny Appleseed. Apple trees are really hearty and can survive winter, which is how they successfully made the move west with families. It’s been great to see such a strong resurgence of something that was a common part of our history. BRAVO: What’s the biggest misconception about hard cider?Brad: That it’s sweet. People don’t typically drink cider as aggressively as they do beer, so we have a great opportunity to set a high standard and educate consumers.BRAVO: For those new to cider, what is a typical ingredient list?Brad: Just fresh apple juice, and yeast, with a little sugar added at fermentation. That’s the basics, and then we incorporate other juices, Colorado wine grapes, dry-hopping and other techniques to produce our different varieties.BRAVO: Where can readers find your ciders?Brad: We’re currently just statewide in Colorado. In Lakewood, Mile High Wine and Spirits in Belmar is a great partner.BRAVO: Where do you see yourself in five years?Brad: I hope I have a day off! [laughter] Really, we just want to keep rolling and stay true to who we are.

Colorado Cider Company is a proud sponsor of Cider Days and offers a variety of ciders for sampling and purchase throughout the event. Visit Lakewood.org/CiderDays for more information!

LAKEWOOD CIVIC CENTER SOUTHRichey GalleryEvocative Forms and Images: Works by Sculptor Dixie Clark and Photographer Marcia Ward These artists have a friendship that spans 16 years, which is showed in a similarity in their work. Susan Martin, cultural center administrator"In fall 2002, we co-presented Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap with Morrison Theatre Company. The grand living room, which constituted the entire set, was to have been constructed in such a way that it would move upstage of the main curtain with relative ease to allow the curtain to be closed. Based on the understanding that we would be able to place the portable sound shell in front of the closed curtain, we scheduled the internationally renowned Takács Quartet to perform its first Lakewood performance on a dark night of The Mousetrap run. Once the set was in place it became quite clear that the curtain could not be closed and the set was not going anywhere until it was disassembled at the end of the run. We took a photo of the set, and a bit sheepishly I emailed Takács to inquire if the group would be willing to perform in front of the set, in our “living room.” The quartet graciously agreed to do so. The performance was brilliant on The Mousetrap set that night with a 'fire' burning in the living room fireplace, and the quartet has since returned for seven more engagements, including the upcoming program May 2015. Artists of that stature are often thought to be fussy and difficult, but Takács Quartet has proven to be more than accommodating and have become good friends of Lakewood Cultural Center."

Tim Hoffman, theater production coordinator"Our former production assistant, Jonathan, was a big coffee drinker. One morning we were preparing for a show and he misplaced his cup. Later that day, during the Mike David Photography slideshow, we had a keyboard come up on the orchestra pit. There, front and center on stage, was Jonathan's coffee cup. Fortunately, I don't think many people noticed!

"During Little Shop of Horrors (2004), the designer of the plant Audrey II built the monster, but wasn't strong enough to run the plant. Jonathan had to operate the plant and call light cues on the headset from within the plant."

Carol Shelly, ticket office coordinator "Those who have been coming to the Lakewood Cultural Center for some time will remember that we didn't always have a box office. When I started my job, I found out that I would be working in a coat room with no area to sell tickets. I had to roll a counter out of the coat room to sell tickets at show time. For a while after our 'new' box office opened, we had a resident chipmunk who always seemed to scurry by right as someone would approach the counter to buy tickets!"

Kelly Graham, facility coordinator "The Mile High Magicians Society has performed here for many years, and the show sells out every year. Early on, one of the magicians offered to show Tim Hoffman a trick. The magician produced a deck of cards and asked Tim to write his name on a card and place it back in the deck while he looked away. The magician then threw the entire deck up in the air and, before walking away, pointed skyward and said, 'That's your card.' There, stuck to the 25-foot ceiling, was Tim's signed card, and there it remains. Now you tell me, how in the world did he do that?"

celebrates 15 years LAKEWOOD CULTURAL CENTER

The Lakewood Cultural Center has played home and host to thousands of performances, events, meetings and parties over the last 15 years. There are a lifetime of memories within the walls, and four City of Lakewood employees, Tim Hoffman, Susan Martin, Jim Olson and Carol Shelly, have been there for them all. We asked several of them, along with others, to reminisce and share with us some of the their favorite memories of the last 15 years at Lakewood Cultural Center.

Page 15: Bravo Lakewood September - December 2014

Allison Scheck, marketing and community relations manager "Tim and I were trying to figure out how the Russian Cossacks finale would run since they didn't speak English and we didn't speak Russian. The lead dancer decided he'd demonstrate it for us in the backstage hallway. We were pressed up against the wall while he quickly lept and twirled around - with a very sharp sword in this hand!

"Opie Gone Bad was in the middle of a great show on the plaza when the sprinklers cycled on. The crowd jumped up so quickly that the band thought there was a snake in the grass! Luckly Tim (Hoffman) quickly figured out that a wide-neck Coors bottle fit perfectly over the sprinkler head."

Jim Olson, facility coordinator "In just 15 years, the Lakewood Cultural Center has fostered many success stories for our community. In recent years, a misfit group of ukulele players sensed that we needed classes and a band, resulting in Lakewood’s ‘everyone is welcome’ Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra. The first performance sold out to an enthusiastic new audience. Smaller, important successes came from our youth artists. I recall an actress with learning challenges who joined us for years, enjoying the limited parts she was given. One session, an instructor who sensed her potential challenged her with a demanding role. She shined, much to the enjoyment and tears of her family and fellow actors. In another instance, there was a boy in an art camp for cartooning that was in a wheelchair. His normally rambunctious fellow students made it a priority to include him in all activities, even changing their daily break from games on the plaza to a group trip to a nearby shop for snacks and drinks. Every day Lakewood Cultural Center's students, dancers, painters and sculptors embrace the arts and each other."

Creating the foundations for the Lakewood Heritage Center, establishing and supporting the annual Cider Days agricultural celebration, overseeing the development of two Lakewood history books and collecting oral histories of longtime Lakewood residents are some of the hallmark accomplishments of the Lakewood Historical Society and its 40 years of work preserving the city’s history.

The Lakewood Historical Society was founded on August 15, 1974, to record, preserve, and share Lakewood’s history. The group was quickly commissioned to oversee projects to celebrate Colorado’s centennial and the nation’s bicentennial anniversaries in 1976. Among its first projects was the restoration of the calving barn from the May Bonfils-Stanton estate. This building would serve as the foundation for a museum in the newly formed Belmar Park, which ultimately became the Lakewood Heritage Center. The society later supported efforts to have the Carriage House, Country School, Streer-Peterson House and the Wide Acres Interurban Shelter added to the Lakewood Heritage Center, and the group also provided funds to restore the site’s Valentine Diner.

Another early project relied on members’ experiences and personal knowledge to help write the first book the Society published, titled ’76 Centennial Stories of Lakewood. In

1994, the society followed up by publishing Lakewood-Colorado, an Illustrated Biography to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the city’s incorporation. Both books are considered definitive sources of the city’s history.

The annual Cider Days event kicked off in 1978, and the society added new programming each year. Cider Days is now Lakewood’s signature community event, held each year at the Lakewood Heritage Center during the first weekend in October.

In 1995, the society began writing the Lakewood Historian newsletter to record the stories of Lakewood, as well as the winning essays of the society-sponsored Dennis Vanderhoof Lakewood History Essay Contest. In 1998, the society started recording oral histories of longtime Lakewood residents, and to date more than 30 histories have been transferred to the Jefferson County Public Library, which has made them available online at http://jeffcolibrary.org/jeffcostories.

The society’s Register of Historic Landmarks was established in 2005. The register is an honorary list, based on guidelines used by the national and Colorado Registers and includes 22 historically significant structures or places within the city of Lakewood.

On January 13, 2014, Mayor Bob Murphy delivered a special proclamation to the society recognizing their 40th anniversary. With so many unique and important projects now complete or underway, the Lakewood Historical Society can look back on 40 years of community service with a sense of great pride and accomplishment.
