THE HEART OF CONXION IS ABOUT ORDINARY WOMEN
WRITING FOR ORDINARY WOMEN, SERVING AN EXTRAORDINARY GOD
FROM THE
EDITOR’S DESK
T his year is quickly closing. How fast it has gone, and what a big year it has been! Having conXion now in colour would be one of the biggest highlights of 2013. I have loved being part of this magazine, finding stories, new writers and so much more. So often I have written how amazed I am as I start to put it all together wondering if I will have enough material and
God in His awesomeness brings it all to my desk to use. Then I ponder which page should this article be on? Where and how will I find pictures to enhance a writer’s piece? I have loved doing and being part of this magazine. Sadly this Decembers’ edition will be my last; I am handing over the reins of conXion and Women’s Ministry in Queensland to a delightful lady, who has as much pas-sion as I do maybe more for the women of Queensland, Donna Savill. Donna will take this role to the next level and beyond and women of Queensland you are blessed to have her walk with you. After 6 years of living and ministering in Bundaberg, Donna will be based at Caloundra from 2014 as Bryce becomes the Ministry Team Leader at Caloundra Church of Christ. Donna absolutely loves serving alongside Bryce and is also very excited to be moving into this role in Women's Ministry on a state level. Her passion is to inspire and encourage women throughout Queensland to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus and to be more effective in the ministry He has called them to. She is looking forward to hearing your stories and helping to equip you to join God where He is already working around you. be on? Where and how will I find pictures to enhance a writer’s piece? I have loved doing and being part of this magazine, but sadly this December edition will be my last. I am handing over the reins of conXion and Women’s Ministry in Queensland to a delightful lady who has as much passion as I do – maybe even more – for the women of Queensland, Donna Savill. Donna will take this role to the next level and beyond, and women of Queensland, you are blessed to have her walk with you.
Donna grew up on the Gold Coast and met her husband Bryce at Southport Church of Christ. They served in several areas of ministry there for 13 years. Donna studied for her Bachelor of Ministries at the Bible College of Queensland. They have two children, Hannah and Joshua. Donna has been a bookkeeper and an enrolments officer, but her greatest identity is as one off God’s enrolments officers here on earth—sharing her story of how Jesus has changed her life and inspiring others to do the same. Feel free to contact Donna at [email protected] if you have a story you'd like to share or a heart for the women you'd love to help grow. I wish to thank all those who have accepted the challenge and written pieces for conXion. I also thank you our readers, because if we didn’t have you we'd have no reason to exist. And finally I wish everyone a blessed, safe holiday season filled with His love.
In His Love always

J ust when I thought my future was all mapped out, God has turned everything upside down!
How do I begin to make any sense of what Gabriel just told me? I am still shaking and still floating from the experience, floating on a cloud of ecstasy, praise and wonder at the angel's words! Who am I, that He should choose me, a poor, ordinary, unimportant young girl, for such a miracle? It is unbelievable — that through ME will come the fulfilment of God's promise to Abraham! But now reality is starting to set in. God has called me personally and I only want to serve him. But who will understand? Who will believe that this is of God? How will I face the jeers and the accusations? I can just hear them now: "The child's father is WHO??? “Do you think I came down in the last shower?" What about Joseph? I love him dearly and this will hurt him deeply. How I can explain it? Will he stand by me, knowing that the babe is not his? If he does, then he'll be disgraced too. He could accuse me of adultery and publicly divorce me. I could get stoned for this! This is too big for me to handle. How can I face it? Please God, speak to Joseph's heart and smooth the way for me.
.....
It's been so good having time out with Elizabeth to reflect and sort things out. Elizabeth's own pregnancy miracle has given me strength and courage. Our God's coming is so unexpected: He conquers all difficulties. What does it say about my baby when Elizabeth's own child leaps in her womb to greet Him? This is so big that I cannot comprehend it.
..... And so the harsh reality begins. No sooner am I back in Nazareth than I have to endure the accusations, the pointed fingers. Betrothed, not yet married, and with child? Joseph is such a good man but he can barely look at me. He told me that he needed time to think, to work
out what to do. He has his reputation and future to think of, too. If he rejects me, what will I do? How will I survive? I trust strongly in God but I'm scared. I don't know how I can get through this.
..... And so many visitors! They all seemed to know of Jesus' birth. The shepherds told me of an Angel choir, singing songs of praise from heaven. heaven. I am in ecstasy. My heart is so full. I feel so small with the great things that are happening all around me. I know that these events will stay within my memory, within my heart, but it's going to take me a lifetime to understand them.
.....
We visited the temple today to dedicate Jesus. I am starting to see how God is fulfilling his promise to so many people. Both Simeon and Anna had waited all their lives for this one moment. What does it mean when two respected prophets each tell you that your son will be their people's salvation? And then came the words that chilled me through and through: "And a sword will pierce your soul." Praise God! He has protected me and has not let me down. Today Joseph came to me and asked for my forgiveness - as if there were anything I needed to forgive! He had a dream, in which the angel Gabriel confirmed my story. He said the baby is to be named Jesus: "God saves." In fact, he's going to marry me and take me to his house straight away. I don't need to worry - God will provide. We will face the world together.
..... A census? Travelling all the way to Bethlehem when I'm due to give birth? I'm terrified. I haven't even known a man; how can I give birth without the women I know and trust around me? I know nothing about birth. I need to be at home with my family, where I feel safe. God, you keep forcing me to break the rules and take risks! I know

GOD MOMENTS—HIS STORY, HER STORY
this Your son I am carrying and I should trust you to protect me, but this is scary stuff.
.....
The last few days have passed in a daze. Late at night, a strange city, no accommodation and me already in labour. Thank God for the warm, dry stable. Oh what a perfect baby! Such a miracle of life! Every tiny toenail, the size of a teardrop but complete and perfect. My heart melts each time I look at him and hold him in my arms. I never dreamt I'd know such completeness, such love, such responsibility. What does God have in store? The words terrified me. If Jesus is to bring salvation, then why does the future fill me with dread?
.....
They are trying to kill my baby! My beautiful, precious, innocent child! Why? Why? What has he ever done? He has already brought joy to so many yet Herod wants him dead! God warned Joseph in a dream so we left for Egypt. But we are in a foreign land, refugees reliant on strangers' goodness and hospitality to survive. I long for home, for my friends and family and for the people in Bethlehem, but we daren't go back. Are we really safe here or will Herod find a way to get at us still? Rumours filter through that Herod has slaughtered all the babies around Bethlehem. The mothers I knew, who loved their precious children just as I love my baby. My heart breaks for them and I am terrified for my own child. Why, God? Why all the evil and cruelty in the world?
….. I haven't written an entry for many years. Since our return from Egypt, God has blessed our family. In Nazareth, my time has been fully occupied with babies, children, caring for my husband and making a home for my family. But recently another remarkable event has occurred, to add to those forever locked in my heart.
As we returned from this year's Passover visit to Jerusalem, Jesus went missing. We searched and searched, but no-one on the road had seen him. It was not like him to just disappear. We were frantic. When we finally backtracked to Jerusalem and found him in the Temple, he was totally involved in discussion with the temple teachers and surprised that we were so concerned. We were furious. "I don't care if they say you are an adult. You are twelve years old - you do not go wandering off like that!" He looked at us, puzzled. He couldn't understand our distress. "Didn't you know I had to be here, dealing with my Father's business?" Although angry and upset, we were amazed at how he was already conversing with the teachers as an equal. I am starting to understand more about the nature of God's son; gifted in so many ways, so humble and so focused. What does life have in store for him? What does God plan for him? If he is so single minded that he would distress his parents because of his greater calling, then who else might he offend as he gets older? He teaching me that God's path is stronger than either man's rules and the dictates of society. I suspect that I am on a journey that will direct my actions to the end of my days. I don't know God's plan but I'm starting to glimpse the bigger pattern. The journey may continue to take me into conflict and crisis, and to defy cultural norms in the name of God. The sword that is destined to pierce my heart - perhaps I'm finally starting to glimpse what it might look like.

A JOURNEY WITH GOD: EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
6 conXion - December 2013
Elizabeth heaved her pregnant form up from her solitary,
resting place. The morning chores had taken longer than
usual, and the unexpected knock at the door intruded on
her time of stillness and prayer. With a tinge of curiosity,
Elizabeth walked laboriously towards the door, heaving it
open.
In an instant, with a joyous cry of exaltation, Elizabeth’s
cousin Mary embraced her. In that moment, when she
heard Mary’s greeting, the life leapt in her womb for joy
to be in the presence of the Holy One. And Elizabeth,
overcome by the Holy Spirit, cried out loudly, “Blessed
are you among women, and blessed is the child you will
bear!” Then smiling fondly at her younger cousin, she
asked, “ But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my
Lord should come to me?” Mary responded with
laughter. Elizabeth’s words were a welcoming balm to
her – like cool, refreshing water to a weary soul.
Immediately Mary’s faith was strengthened. She had
been given new courage and resolution to face the
hardship, disgrace and ridicule that was bound to
continue in the days ahead. But for now her spirit felt
refreshed and this time together would be rich and
rewarding for both of them. How restorative to see her
cousin and dear friend – the one who rejoiced in her
miraculous condition and understood the price of
submission and obedience.
So right there in that humble home, Elizabeth gave
honour to Mary’s sacrifice to the Lord by saying’ “Blessed
is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to
her will be accomplished.” There was not a hint of
jealousy – although the One Mary carried in her womb
would be far greater than her own. Instead she was filled
with happiness that Mary had come to share these
months with her. It would surely be a time to pray, to
praise, to share and to laugh – together.
The next three months provided a time of deep reflection
on how the Lord had woven His will and purposes into
their lives. Perhaps God invites you in this Christmas
season to do the same.
In what poignant moments this year have you witnessed
the presence of Jesus in your own life?
Where have you, like Elizabeth and Mary, been surprised
by Him?
How has Jesus reached out to show you His deep love and
care?
Where have others been a means of comfort and
encouragement – supporting you in the choices you have
made to honour God?
In what ways have you given preference to others and
rejoiced in their God-given blessings?
Mary bore the life of Christ within her. How can we offer
ourselves more deeply to God so that Christ might be
evident in us?
Let us together this Christmas season rejoice as Mary did
in her song of praise:
“My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God
my Saviour,
For the Mighty One has done great things for me, and
Holy is His name.”
(Luke 1:46, 49)

Prayerful reflections provides an opportunity to step into the gospel stories and encounter Jesus and the people He converses with. Here we make a space within ourselves to notice our own reaction to the story being shared. How
are you responding? What emotions are stirred and what might God be asking you to address in the context of your own life as a result of immersing yourself in this dialogue with Jesus?
PRAYERFUL REFLECTIONS …

For the Mighty One has done great things for me, and Holy is His name.”

It was the worst of times, but the best of times,
A time to cry, a time for joy,
A time to give up, a time to press in,
A time of dryness, a time of blessing,
A time of despondency, a time for hope,
A time of weariness, a time for refreshing,
A time of trouble, a time to find peace,
A time of loneliness, a time of loving fellowship,
It is a time to be revived, be reshaped, be reformed in the
hands of Love.
There is a heavy covering of dryness upon the landscape
just now, offering little promise of plentiful food for
creature’s great and small. Take the birds for instance.
Everyday more and more gather and squabble at our
feeders hungry for free offerings, and are ready to fight
bravely and gallantly for their right to eat. Or have you
noticed the wildlife lingering dangerously longer at the
roadside, foraging for green shoots or tumbleweed
seeds? Or that the waterholes are dwindling and
becoming a source of stagnant, mouldy moisture giving
no gift of refreshing to animals that come by? All of
creation cries out for rain, for relief, for replenishing.
There are times when we too thirst for the Spirit of God
to satisfy our dry and barren souls. Yet in the words
reminiscent of Dickens, the worst of times promise to
become the best of times. When the Spirit comes there is
life abundantly given. When the Spirit falls all things are
made new. When the Spirit breaks in like a flood there is
a restoration of blessing, of wholeness and healing.
King David understood the secret to receiving such
blessing in times of barrenness. Although his soul thirsted
for God, and his flesh was faint in a dry and weary land
lacking water, David focussed his attention on God, dwelt
upon His steadfast love, gave Him praise regardless of
circumstances and continued to meditate on how God had
remained faithful to him. David reminded himself how
often God’s hand had upheld him. As a result, David’s soul
was revived and his soul was satisfied as with a rich feast.
(Psalm 63:1-8)
Reflect upon the condition of your soul. Are you thirsty
for refreshing? Are you despondent, weary, lonely or
troubled? Your dry times can become the best of times. A
time for refreshing, hope, peace and laughter. The Spirit
of God makes all these things possible.
“You have turned my mourning into dancing;
you have taken off my sackcloth and
clothed me with joy.”
Psalm 30:11

DRY TIMES
8 conXion - December 2013
I ’ve just been through one of the toughest times of
my life, physically and emotionally, but God has
been my strength and has done even more than I
could ever have expected.
My Dad was christened Anglican, confirmed as a boy, was
a choir and altar boy, but for some reason fell away. I
have no recollection of my parents going to church
except for Easter and Christmas. Since becoming a
Christian in 1986 I had prayed daily for them and had
tried once or twice unsuccessfully, to talk to Dad about
God. My Dad was a respected pharmacist, tall and
straight, gentle and well mannered, honest, polite and
dignified. At 85 years of age he was still fit and well and
‘on the ball’.
Then on the 22nd May Dad suffered a minor stroke. He
was admitted to hospital in Toowoomba that afternoon
and four days later suffered a major stroke. This left him
unable to walk, feed himself, toilet himself, speak clearly,
see out of his left eye or hear with his left ear but still
100% aware of everything. He was transferred to
Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital Intensive Stroke Unit but after
three weeks intense therapy, was not able to be re-
habilitated. It was then necessary for him to go into high
care, back in Toowoomba.
During this time I did much travelling to and from the
Injune area where we are doing our “Outback Ministry”. I
would spend two weeks with Dad and one week with
Gary. Having rarely been separated, this was a tough time
for Gary also. He even lost weight!!!.
As the weeks and months went by, I became exhausted
but was extremely grateful for the quality time I was able
to have with Dad. I spent at least 4 hours each day with
him, fed him lunch and dinner (plus treats) and took him
for walks around the complex and garden in his ‘Regency
Chair’, while I sang to him. I was able to trim his hair &
moustache, cut his fingernails & toenails, massage his feet
and give him back rubs every night as I settled him off to
sleep playing his favourite Strauss waltzes. Each night I’d
kiss him on the temple and say “I love you, see you
tomorrow”.
As I’d walk away fighting back tears it hit me that here I
was now being the ‘parent’ and my Dad was like a ‘child’
who couldn’t even do the simplest thing for himself.
Though sad I felt very privileged to be able to love and
IT’S NEVER TOO LATE
conXion - December 2013 9
support him so personally in this way. These are precious
memories.
One night when Gary was down visiting, Dad vividly
described the nightmares he had been having for a few
weeks. It seemed he had been feeling trapped in his body
and tormented by his helplessness. Gary shared that in
PNG I used to suffer from nightmares and we prayed each
night which stopped them. “Would you like us to pray for
your dreams too?” Gary asked. Dad said YES!
So we prayed each night after that and he never had
nightmares again. On the third night, after he’d had a
particularly difficult day of frustration and agitation, I was
doing his back massage while Gary prayed for his dreams.
And then it happened! Unplanned, unrehearsed but
prompted by the Lord it just flowed naturally, I said “Dad,
I know that you believe in Jesus and that you were
confirmed as a boy, but do you know that if you ask Jesus
to come into your life now, he could give you real peace
to cope with all the things you can’t do for yourself
anymore. Would you like to do that now?”
In a very slow, slurred, muffled voice he said “ yes, but I
can’t say the words”. I said “that’s ok I can say the words
for you and you can just say, yes.” “ok”.
“Dad, do you believe that Jesus Christ is God’s son and do
you invite him into your life now and accept the peace he
gives you?” And he said “Yes”!!!!!! Then I prayed “Thank
you Lord for Dad’s life. Fill him with your wonderful peace
through the Holy Spirit and wrap your loving arms around
him, In Jesus Christ’s precious name, Amen.”
It was the 19th July, my Birthday. That night I received the
best Birthday present a daughter could ever get.
From then on though confined by his disabilities, Dad was
much more at peace and never became agitated again.
Four days before he died, he suffered another massive
stroke and could no longer speak or swallow but I knew he
was still ‘in there’ because his right toes tapped in time
when I sang to him.
On14th August Dad passed away peacefully. What a joy to
know that I will see him in heaven.

10 conXion - December 2013
I recently had the adventure of travelling to America
with my husband to begin recording a new music CD.
This had been a dream for many years, and as we landed
on American soil I felt the excitement coursing through
my body. I had worked extremely hard leading up to the
recording, pouring my heart into crafting the music, and
praying that God would use these songs to draw people
to Him. Now I was here really living the dream, heading
to Nashville to work with an acclaimed music producer. I
was blown away to have the opportunity, having seen
God provide everything we needed to get there.
As we were walking to our connecting flight in LA, we
were stopped by a TV reporter who asked us if we were
concerned about the Terror Alert announced by the US
government the previous day. Terror alert?! We had no
idea that there was a terror alert announced, warning
people to be wary of travel! Our connecting flight was
leaving soon, so we excused ourselves and hurried on to
find our gate. As we walked I found myself thinking
about the situation, and her question. And I thought,
“This doesn’t make me wary to travel, because I believe
my life is actually in God’s hands! I am not at the mercy
of a terrorist! God has a plan for me, and my life is His
concern!”
I really believe nothing can take my life until God allows
it. And when my time comes, as it must for all of us, I
believe I will go to be with Him! I’m not suggesting we
should throw godly wisdom to the wind and run into the
arms of danger, rather that we accept His invitation to
live an abundant life and do what God has called us to do
in the midst of the uncertainties. For me, that means to
sing and to share songs of hope, as He gives them. To
stop travelling, taking opportunities, and moving forward
due to fear would be to stop fully living. No way!
One thing is sure: this world is often uncertain, scary and
dark. One thing is more certain: God is always with us, so
we can live an abundant and joyful life in spite of these
uncertainties.
Now safely back in Australia, with new songs recorded,
dreams achieved, and a new season of ministry ahead, I
am so glad that faith trumps fear!

MISSION POSSIBLE 2013 TO VANUATU
Ray Greenwood, Stacey Tattersall (blonde hair) and Tammy Forbes
Before beginning this report, I’ve just read over my
article for last year’s conXion about our visit to Vanuatu
in 2012. What wonderful memories are brought to life
again! This time last year though, never did I dream I’d
be off to Central Pentecost again, but God had His own
plans to reveal to me about ‘Mission Possible 2013’ trip.
Second time over may have lost some of the nervous
uncertainty about what was to come but this was
balanced out by an increase in the eager anticipation of
meeting up with friends again in Central Pentecost. Our
church’s partnership agreement with this community of
God’s people is strong and focused on the three aspects
of Gospel + Education + Health. The 2013 team was on
their way!
None of us were ‘first timers’ ; Jan Christensen, our
ministry assistant served with GMP on Pentecost for
many years, Vicki Marney, our very capable group leader
again, Ray Greenwood, experienced paramedic teaching
plenty of first aid, Tammy Forbes, Stacey Tattersall and
myself as members from last year’s team boarded the Air
Vanuatu flight ready for our 12 day mission trip. Although
only 6 of us were actually travelling, the prayers and
support of WCOC were always with us every step of the
way.
And God’s plans are perfect! We arrived to a very warm
welcome from ‘old’ friends and looked excitedly at our
itinerary for the full week ahead of visiting the school, the
Health centre, the 2 kindergartens, attending church
services at Wujunmel and surrounding village churches,
meeting with the Ladies’ fellowship and the church Board
leaders as well as lots of catching up, sharing photos and
stories of the year that was. A special ‘God moment’ was
conXion - December 2013 13
These are the sewing machines which were sent over, with some of the people from Central Pentecost, Sandy Feldman was able to teach the people how to use them while she was over
there. They have almost no electricity there, hence the hand operated machines.
when we unpacked the 42 boxes of school supplies,
Bibles and books, tools, clothes and shoes as well as 6
restored ‘1920 Singer’ hand-operated sewing machines
with fabric and sewing supplies! These boxes had sat on
Port Vila docks for weeks but God had it all under control
and all the boxes arrived at Pentecost undamaged!
Thank you Lord! Again, Allan Miller’s assistance was
invaluable with this organisation and we thank God for
the connections Allan has established! God bless you!
To see the school’s newly established library of 10,000
books from last year’s visit brought tears to our eyes, the
second ablutions block is almost completed, and plans
are in place for a concrete floor with walls, roof and a
tank for the Wujunmel Kindy to be constructed by the
church community. All these projects are blessings from
God when people pray to be used for His glory in His
service.
The Central Pentecost fellowship consists of such
wonderful, generous Christian people and families who
praise God with so much enthusiasm one can’t help but
feel the presence of God everywhere!
After our busy ten days we farewelled our friends with
tears, hugs and handshakes, while they asked whether
we would return next year with others to become new
friends. Our immediate answer was, “Absolutely, God
willing!!” The challenge is ‘Are you willing to be led by
God wherever He wants you to be?” Next year’s visit to
Central Pentecost will be a ‘DOING’ visit – are you ready,
am I ready, to DO things for God – how can we not, when
we remember what He has done for us.......
So let’s all of us, no matter where or who we are, be
challenged, be led, be ready to DO.....for God.
Sandy Feldman - Withcott Church of
Christ
14 conXion - December 2013
SLOWLY BUT SURELY
S he became a devout Christian five years ago, and
has been on a learning curve ever since. When she
decided to follow the Lord Jesus, none of her family
members were Christians, so there was no family Church.
She became a Christian through a time of wondering
about God, wondering so much that she went and bought
a Bible from a shopping centre bookstore and was a little
surprised to see a sticker on the front of the Bible, stating
that it was in the Top 100 list. Hadn’t the Bible been
around for centuries?
One night, not long after starting to read Genesis, she had
an unusual experience, the first of many. Just starting to
doze off, when she felt a strong heavy embrace.
Somewhat startled, she sat forward, turned to her
husband who was watching television nearby
(headphones still intact), and was at a loss for words.
She had wanted to attend a church for some time and
asked God to guide her to one. Looking through the phone
book she discovered the overwhelming number of
different denominations.
She’s always been a ‘black and white’ type of person;
there’s never been much room for shades of grey. From
her work experience of twenty years, she was used to
deadlines, making decisions, paperwork, managing staff,
and knowing all the rules and regulations of the
workplace.
Becoming a Christian has changed all that. She’s slowly
learning that in every encounter, it’s more about sharing
one’s heart than one’s knowledge. She’s also learning that
following Jesus is a process – an ongoing process, not one
with an ending. One doesn’t “arrive”. This is both
comforting and strange for her at the same time.
From a short time after becoming a Christian, she’s
thought that her gift from God was writing. But she’s
realizing that it’s more than that. She feels that God is
endeavouring to soften her heart, and in the process,
change her writing from a reporting, analytical, even
judgmental style, to more personal sharing and
encouragement. And although she still believes that
writing is her gift, she’s slowly coming to the realization
that her gift is not cut and dried as she initially thought. It’s
more that. What she keeps recognising is to change her
writing style from ‘to the point’, to ‘expressive and
encouraging’.
Since becoming a Christian Christmas has become
somewhat confusing. It feels so disconnected, from the
celebration of the birth of Jesus on earth as a baby. It just
doesn’t seem feel right to her to observe His birth on a
specific date that’s not mentioned in the Bible by anyone,
not even Luke.
And each year, she wonders about the tree. It was a tree
that Jesus died on – the cross of Christ. Yet we decorate
this other tree each year, almost honouring it, with stars
and angels and treats and coloured baubles, lights and
tinsel, which is looked upon adoringly numerous times each
day, especially by the children. Then we place gifts from
Santa under it. She can’t reconcile this.
Now she’s starting to wonder though, if over the last few
years, she’s throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
She was an atheist for forty years yet celebrated Christmas
each year. How can Christians and non-Christians both
celebrate Christmas?
There’s seems to be only two options: retrieval of the birth
of Jesus from the secular Christmas, or, avoidance of
Christmas altogether. But for the first time since becoming
a Christian five years ago, she finally feels that there is a
way apart from these two options; to celebrate why Jesus
was born, rather than when He was born.
The following poem outlines her thoughts.
conXion - December 2013 15
It’s taken me five long years, To clear all the glitter To see the light, In its purest, sight. Christ was born; we don’t know when, The Bible doesn’t make known But does it really matter, Should it put Christmas, in a tatter? Jesus was given an earthly birth date Some centuries after His birth. They called it “Christmas”, And added plenty of mirth. The twenty-fifth of December was chosen, A date most sacred to sun god Mithra Was the origin pure at heart? Or was it tainted from the start? Is it Saint Nic, Father Christmas or Santa? What happened to baby Jesus? Maybe we can’t see Him, Due to all the food, gifts, decorations, full to the brim. Santa Claws, Just who is he? Rearrange the letters of Santa, And you might just see. The dilemma of where one spends Christmas Day,
Cards of Santa, decorations, snowmen, decorated trees, the nativity scene and the three wise men, are all delivered It just doesn’t make sense, It’s like it’s all been condensed. Is Christmas a day, or six to eight weeks – a season? Is it worship, or indulgent festivities? Is it a baby in a manger, or candy canes? Is it, for many, a time of loneliness, heartache and pain Then we have ‘White Christmas’, Santa Clause is coming to Town’ and ‘Mary’s Boy Child’,
What mishmash!
Children sitting on the laps of men in red and white suits,
Not only does Santa’s sleigh fly, it also drives around on different neighbourhood routes. Remind me again, Where is baby Jesus? No wonder I wanted to throw Christmas out the door, Every year the artificial lights glitter more and more. Jesus was born to give us the real light, Jesus was born to give us true hope Jesus was born to give us everlasting Salvation, Jesus was born to bring us back to our Father, for Him we grope.

LOVE was all around and this was one of the best camps we've held. The mix of ladies who came was amazing. We had fun with loads of love and most of all a brilliant time with God.
Our guest speaker, Katie Lush, held us in the palm of her hand. She presented and unpacked her sessions on the ‘Five Love Languages’ by Gary Chapman, brilliantly and sensitively, knowing we were a mix of divorcees, widows, singles and marrieds. Katie shared that falling in love is a feeling – a wonderful feeling to be sure – but it doesn’t last. Love is an act of the will. After all, Jesus told us to love our enemies and that's not a warm feeling, but a choice. The feelings are thrilling and euphoric, but in time true love learns to seek what’s best for the other per-son.
During the second session we filled in a questionnaire which helped us identify our own needs and primary love language, which was fun and enlightening. I thoroughly recommend the book as it’s really useful for everyone, either single or married. During the third and last session Katie reminded us of the greatest commandment, to “love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and love your neighbour”.
Worship time was again led by the very talented team, Krysalus. They always manage to bring us to a perfect place to worship our Lord. Saturday evening we held a talent night which was great fun. So many shared some amazing talents and we were truly entertained.
Right from the Friday games and Get to Know You activites, to the Sunday communion time, those who attended were filled with the love and joy of our Lord.
This year we had a photo booth available for anyone to go and take photos. As you will see by the pictures, it was well used.

I envy Kevin. My brother, Kevin, thinks God lives
under his bed. At least that’s what I heard him say
one night. He was praying out loud in his dark
bedroom, and I stopped to listen, ‘Are you there, God?’
he said. “Where are you? Oh, I see. Under the bed…” I
giggled softly and tiptoed off to my own room. Kevin’s
unique perspectives are often a source of amusement.
But that night something else lingered long after the
humour. I realized for the first time the very different
world Kevin lives in.
He was born 30 years ago, mentally disabled as a result of
difficulties during labour. Apart from his size (he’s six foot
2), there are few ways in which he is an adult. He reasons
and communicates with the capabilities of a 7-year-old,
and he always will. He will probably always believe that
God lives under his bed, that Santa Claus is the one who
fills the space under our tree every Christmas and that
airplanes stay up in the sky because angels carry them.
I remember wondering if Kevin realizes he is different. Is
he ever dissatisfied with his monotonous life?
Up before dawn each day, off to work at a workshop for
the disabled, home to walk our cocker spaniel, return to
eat his favourite macaroni-and-cheese for dinner, and
later to bed. The only variation in the entire scheme is
laundry, when he hovers excitedly over the washing
machine like a mother with her newborn child. He does
not seem dissatisfied. He lopes out to the bus every
morning at 7:05, eager for a day of simple work. He wrings
his hands excitedly while the water boils on the stove
before dinner, and he stays up late twice a week to gather
our dirty laundry for his next day’s laundry chores.
And Saturdays – oh, the bliss of Saturdays! That’s the day
my Dad takes Kevin to the airport to have a soft drink,
watch the planes land, and speculate loudly on the
destination of each passenger inside. “That one’s goin’ to
Chi-car-go!” Kevin shouts as he claps his hands. His
anticipation is so great he can hardly sleep on Friday
nights.
And so goes his world of daily rituals and weekend field
trips. He doesn’t know what it means to be discontent. His
life is simple. He will never know the entanglements of
wealth of power, and he does not care what brand of
clothing he wears or what kind of food he eats. His needs
have always been met, and he never worries that one day
they may not be. His hands are diligent. Kevin is never so
happy as when he is working. When he unloads the
dishwasher or vacuums the carpet, his heart is completely
GOD LIVES UNDER THE BED
This Deserves Thought
A friend emailed me this piece and even though I am not a believ-
er I enjoyed it as it made me think a lot of where we all are in the
world. For several years I worked closely with the mentally disa-
bled in a Victorian Government Institution and can concur with
many of the writers conclusions. Of course things there were not
as idealistic as they appear to be for Kevin but never the less there
is a power of truth in this.
Don’t start reading this one until you’ve got more than a minute
to just ‘scan’ over it. It deserves some time for reflection.
conXion - December 2013 19
in it. He does not shrink from a job when it is begun, and
he does not leave a job until it is finished. But when his
tasks are done, Kevin knows how to relax.
He is not obsessed with his work or the work of others.
His heart is pure. He still believes everyone tells the truth,
promises must be kept, and when you are wrong, you
apologize instead of argue. Free from pride and
unconcerned with appearances, Kevin is not afraid to cry
when he is hurt, angry or sorry. He is always transparent,
always sincere. And he trusts God.
Not confined by intellectual reasoning, when he comes to
Christ, he comes as a child. Kevin seems to know God – to
really be friends with Him in a way that is difficult for an
‘educated’ person to grasp. God seems like his closest
companion. In my moments of doubt and frustrations
with my Christianity, I envy the security Kevin has in his
simple faith. It is then that I am most willing to admit that
he has some divine knowledge that rises above my mortal
questions. It is then I realize that perhaps he is not the
one with the handicap. I am. My obligations, my fear, my
pride, my circumstances – they all become disabilities
when I do not trust them to God’s care.
Who knows if Kevin comprehends things I can never
learn? After all, he has spent his whole life in that kind of
innocence, praying after dark and soaking up the
goodness and love of God. And one day, when the
mysteries of heaven are opened, and we are all amazed at
how close God really is to our hearts, I’ll realize that God
heard the simple prayers of a boy who believed that God
lived under his bed. Kevin won’t be surprised at all!

In 1990 I responded to the call of God in my life and ended up serving with a mission in the Gambia West Africa for the next 14 years. What an experience! Many stories to tell, stories of how God worked His-story in and through my life and sweeing how He worked His-story in and through the lives of new believers from another completely different culture. BUT, this year we celebrate not only what God has done in the Gambia, but in many nations around the world!
Celebrate with us in WEC (Worldwide Evangelisation for Christ) International as we have reached a milestone….100 years old!
In 1913 God used CT Studd, a former English test cricketer, to start the ‘Heart of Africa’ mission in the Congo. His motto was: “If Jesus Christ be God and died for me then no sacrifice is too great for me to make for Him”.
To be willing to die to self is something we need to do daily. What will it cost me today to live for Him? God prepared me to serve Him in the Gambia as a missionary nurse/midwife. I saw many dying people and held many of them in my arms. It was sad. I cried, asking honestly of God “Why did this three year old child have to die in my arms”? This never would have happened here in
Australia....” There was also the great joy of seeing many lives saved as we were able to treat malaria, and assist in many difficult deliveries. But the greatest miracle I ever saw was an African, despite the cost which often meant persecution, come to love and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
To see people reached and the Church planted –celebrate with us! There is much to celebrate and yet still much more to be done.

WALKING WITH FARMERS We're coming toward the close of another year of Walking with Farmers. Following the floods, the drought has returned with a vengeance. I have spoken with quite a few folk who tell me that any rainfall is very isolated - same as it has been for the last ten years or so. Between the floods and droughts I have been extremely busy trying to keep up the supplies and deliveries.
I have some wonderful supporting churches as well as some private individuals who look after my needs when I ask for help. We are doing comfort cushions for folks who are suffer-ing from various illnesses. Christmas gifts and goods are com-ing in now, needing to be sorted for Christmas runs. There is some amazing, beautiful handiwork for the ladies that’s been lovingly done by a precious lady. In addition we hope to give each family a Christmas hamper, as well as their other gifts.
I am concerned that I'll be confronting more depression on this trip, as I have been told of some sadness and fears for what the future holds. In these situations I need to rely heavily on my God to give me the sensitivity, courage, wisdom and words to suit each person as they come to me. It is an encour-agement to me personally to have the resources, knowledge
and privilege to walk beside these precious folks in the west, and to know that they trust me to keep their confidence as they share their situations.
During this year I have been so blessed with a new set of light truck tyres for the Triton dual-cab that I drive. Also a couple of ladies from another church delivered a land-cruiser load of fresh fruit and vegetables for me to take out. GOD always knows our needs and supplies them. As the year comes to a close I would ask that all of you keep the farmers in your fer-vent prayers as they struggle to make ends meet in the coming year. Also pray for any of them who may be desperately feel-ing that they just cannot go on any more. We're praying for something special for the men-folk for Christmas this year. As the farmers are ageing they have health problems, too.
I was so grateful to be able to attend the Girl’s Get Away Camp at Coolum. It was well attended and very thought pro-voking as well. The music was lively and well done. Much fun was shared by the ladies, as well as the fellowship. It is good to fill the tank up with some good solid spiritual refreshment!
God bless you all as you celebrate the birth of our wonderful Saviour, Christ Jesus.

CHARACTER Mother always said, "if we do not criticise you then it means we don't love you" I never understood what she meant. I just found it odd that someone who loved me so dearly; who gave me life would hurt my feelings.
Despite my feelings, it was constructive. And molded my character so that I could continue to evolve to the best version of me. What I came to realise as I grew up is that everyone is going to have something to say about your dreams, ambitions, passion etc. What's important is what you choose to take from this or ignore. Words only affect us depending on how much meaning we give them. So I decided to practice a form of 'selective amnesia' where I only chose to take from any experience, that which would strengthen me as a person. That's what builds character. So if you are on the verge of giving up ... think about how far you have come to get where you are. Go back to that moment when you took the first-step, and just how that made you feel. Remember all the fans, support, motivation, encouragement you received from those that believed in you. Those are the people who love you; who believe in what you are doing. Those are the people who should matter! They are there with you because they obviously love your work. Life can get overwhelming, and self doubt and all sort of things creep in but this is not meant to cripple us. It is meant to make us stronger. My prayer for you as you struggle with all the criticism that surrounds you is to remember to stay true to what you love and believe in no matter what happens in life. Only you can define your life. Everyone else that believes in you will con-tinue to support and encourage you. Let self-belief, peace of mind, renewed hope and success prevail in your lives. And hope to see more of your work, passions, dreams and ambitions unfolding with the coming year.
Sincerely,

‘Quite Time’ is important. That time every day set aside for God and God alone. Even Jesus Himself left everyone and went on his own for time with God. If Jesus needed it, how much more do we?
I have to admit I’m not crash hot with ‘Quiet Time’ but I have gotten into the habit to go to the Strand (the Council’s name for the beach front) at least three mornings a week, and attempting to have ‘Quiet Time’ with God.
It’s not working very well. I keep getting distracted. I didn’t know why until after a weekend away with my husband.
My wonderful husband surprised me with a romantic weekend at a place called Hidden Valley. To set the scene I need to let you know a little about Hidden Valley. It is a little place north of Paluma, which is north of Townsville. It has about ten cabins (they are in the process of building more) and three common areas (BBQ area, entertainment area and dining room). It also has a shop/tourist information/reception area with a payphone. They need the payphone as there is no mobile reception or Wi-Fi. About 85% of retreat is run off its own solar plant (you can have a tour of it, if you like) with the remaining 15% or so of power supplied by gas.
I tell you about the power so you understand why there are no extraneous power points in the cabins… or anywhere else. There is a power point in the bathroom, and that is it. The only TV in the place is in the entertainment area. To have a coffee you need to boil the jug on a tiny gas stove on the veranda of the cabin and the milk is kept cold in an esky filled with bottles of ice.
The first thing I noticed was the sound of the birds, the breeze flitting its way through the trees and…silence. It is
so quiet.
Having recently had an ear operation, the quiet was such a relief I nearly cried. It was the best night of sleep I have had in months.
When we came home, I couldn’t believe the noise. I could hear traffic, sirens, dogs barking, neighbours talking, making meals, the radio in the distance, kids squealing, the hum of the fridge, the whir of the computer, telephone ring tones. It was almost overwhelming. Then there were the lights (but that’s a whole other story). I did not sleep well that night.
The next morning I looked forward to going to the Strand, where I’d get some quiet. How wrong I was. People running, jogging, talking, laughing. Traffic, horns, boats in the distance. Council workers with their hoses, trucks reversing, mowers and blowers. My ‘Quiet Time’ with God was not quiet at all.
All our technology and convenient appliances are so NOISY.
I need to rethink my location for ‘Quiet Time’. I’m scrapping the electronic Bible and laptop (yes, they actually make noise and it is so tempting to do something else with the appliances). A hard copy Bible and a pen and paper work just as well. Now…just to find somewhere quiet. I’m working on it. I’m worried I’ll end up in the bathroom.
Oh well. God is worth it (but I do need to get my husband to fix that drip).

I love giving gifts to people to show how much I
appreciate them. So when I found an awesome jigsaw
puzzle of some lovely Gum trees perfectly reflected in a
waterhole I knew I had a great gift for an amazing lady.
She is a master at jigsaw puzzles and spends hours
preparing the base, pouring over the pieces, choosing the
right ones for the right places and fitting them together to
make the final masterpiece. Each jigsaw puzzle created
tells a story about the scene and ultimately points to the
one who puts it all together.
Not all jigsaw puzzles are the same quality however, so
she is very careful to examine the puzzle before starting
work. After studying the pieces she said “These will be a
pleasure to work with”. When I asked what she meant
she explained a few things about jigsaw puzzles
Some pieces are rough and don’t fit together Some pieces come apart after a short amount of time Some pieces are the wrong size Sometimes pieces can even be missing
For all the time left on this planet, God is pouring over His
people, examining the quality and fitting His people
together in different parts of this country and this world.
But sometimes we can be rough and need some work
from the master before we can fit the way He wants us
to. Sometimes we are in the right spot but we get restless
or hurt or discontent and move away from where He has
us. Sometimes we are totally missing from the community
of believers and there is a missing piece where we are
meant to be.
But when His people join together in community, on the
base of Christ, each person using their gifts and serving in
love, fitting together and joined by His Spirit, the picture is
amazing. And the reflection that the world sees makes
them want to find out what this place called Church we
have is all about. And that picture ultimately points to the
One who holds all things together. (Col 1:17).
“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement
give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow
Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may
glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Rom 15:5-6
“Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances
you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which
binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Balloons, presents, candles and those extra special, crazy
birthday glasses (yes, it’s a tradition; every family
member must wear them on their birthday!). It was my
husband’s birthday and I enjoyed planning to make the
celebration special. His birthday fell on a Sunday in
December, so in between a pancake breakfast and
heading off to a romantic B & B for the night, we went to
church.
During the service I realized: it is almost Christmas- Jesus’
birthday! I was moved remembering God’s love and the
fact that He came to earth to seek me out; the Lord, born
in a stable, lying in a manger. I felt God whisper
“celebrate Christmas”. I felt Him encourage me to
worship Him by making a fuss and truly celebrating this
season- just as I had done for my husband’s birthday. So I
made a list of ways I can celebrate Jesus’ birthday, and
worship Him this Christmas season:
*Take the time to enjoy a walk at the beach, mountains or
any place that shows His beauty. Enjoy His creation and
the splendor He has made.
*Give Jesus a birthday gift! Make an extra donation in the
church offering or to a charity, as a special gift to Him.
Giving a gift is a tangible way we show our love to each
other- and God- on His birthday! It also reflects how He
gave us the gift of His Son at Christmas.
*Skip a meal, and use the time when you would have
prepared and eaten the food to thank God for the
blessings He has given this year. He is ultimately the one
who fills us.
*Thank Him for friends, family, and specific blessings He
has given this year. Make a list! Then reflect on previous
years, and thank Him for His provision and guidance, and
His presence and faithfulness in difficult seasons.
Celebrate how good He is and take time to say thanks!
*Write a card to a family member, and be grateful for
God’s gift of family. Remind them why you love them, and
thank them for the blessing they are to you.
*Bake some yummy food, and enjoy the feast of
Christmas! This is a birthday party after all!
Will you join me in truly celebrating this Christmas? Will
you make time amidst the noise and shopping to worship
and enjoy Him, and celebrate His birthday, just as we
would for our own special family members? The Wise
Men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Have
you thought what gift you will give Him this year? I hope
you will join the party!

I come from a meat-eating family. All of us love
meat, and believe it's not a meal unless there is
meat in it. All of us, except one. So, recently I
have been making meals without meat. This
dish I made for my father and asked him what
kind of meat it was. He replied, "some kind of
mince?". I kept him guessing until the end of the
meal, and when I declared that there was
actually no meat in it. He couldn't believe it!
INGREDIENTS:
2 large eggplant, salt
Olive oil
1 small block of Haloumi cheese
2 onions, chopped finely
1 tsp crushed garlic
1 jar passata (2 cups) or spaghetti sauce (Alternative:
two tins tomatoes, 1 tin of tomato purée)
2 tbsps fresh Greek basil, roughly chopped or 1 tbsp
dried basil
1/2 cup red wine
1 large tub of Ricotta cheese
4 tbsps dried Parmesan cheese
Salt pepper
1 cup grated cheese

conXion - December 2013 27
METHOD:
Slice the eggplant about 0.5 cm thick, and place in a bowl of salted water as you go. Heat a large frying pan
with a thin layer of oil on the bottom. Pat the eggplant dry with paper towels and fry in batches in the oil 2-
3 minutes a side. Eggplant will soak up a lot of oil so you may have to add oil as you go. Remove to a paper
towel lined plate. (If you prefer a healthier method, place the eggplant on a baking tray lined with baking
paper and spray with oil, bake at 230°C for 10-15 minutes. This method can tend to make the eggplant dry
and cardboard-like if left for too long or too little oil.)
Slice the Haloumi cheese about 0.5 cm thick. Fry this in a little oil until a little browned. Set aside.
Heat 2 tbsps olive oil in a pan, add onions and garlic and cook over a medium heat until softened. Pour in
the jar of passata and heat until simmering. (Alternatively, pour tins of tomatoes and the tin of Tomato Pu-
ree into the pan) Add the basil and red wine into the pan and simmer for 5-10 minutes or until the sauce
has thickened. Remove from heat.
In a bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese and salt and pepper.
Grease a 2 litre baking dish and layer the ingredients starting with a little tomato sauce on the bottom then,
eggplant, sauce, haloumi, ricotta mixture, grated cheese. Repeat this two or three times depending on the
amount of ingredients. Leave about 2cm room at the top as the dish will bubble over in the oven.
Top with grated cheese and bake at 180°C for 40 minutes or until browned on top.
Serve with a smile and try to get your family to guess which meat is in it! Have fun.

Advance Notice for Campers
Dear Ladies
I am writing to notify you in advance of a change in venue for our 2014 Darling Downs Churches of Christ Ladies Retreat. Only very recently we were notified that Camp Koorjarewan, though still owned by the Lutheran Church, is now under new management. There have been improvements made to the kitchen and dining area including a log fireplace. The new manag-ers have been involved in tourism, hospitality and camp site management for over 20 years. The husband is a qualified chef and consequently they are now a fully catered site. As a result of this the camp fees have increased considerably. In the past we have been very blessed to be able to keep costs well under that of any other camps. The committee and I have exhaustively explored other options. These days nearly all camp sites are fully catered with compa-rable fees and most are outside the Toowoomba area which would mean further distances to travel, adding to the expense. So we have had to accept the fact that we must stay with Camp Koojarewon and increase our fees accordingly, which really only brings us into line with other camps including the Girls’ Getaway Camp @ Coolum. One of the advantages of Camp Koojarewon being fully catered is that we will no longer be required to do the washing up. So no one will have to miss out on the start of sessions. Because this news has come unexpectedly, we decided to get this advanced notice out and trust it will allow you time to budg-et for the increase in cost. Day registration $60 (2 meals included)
Full time $140
Due to the new situation we require full payment with registration before the closing date (to be advised) The committee and I have an excellent programme planned for 2014. Jenny Sutton will be our speaker. You may remember her from the 2010 camp ‘Come Drink from the Fountain’. Jenny’s pas-
sion is to see women released into the fullness of a relationship with their Heavenly Father. Aside from being a wife and moth-
er to her own two children, she is also ‘Mum’ to 230 teenage girls in her role as Pastoral Assistant to a boarding house in Too-
woomba. She is heavily involved in prayer ministry for women and with God’s leading will be able to minister to you right
where you are.
We will also again have the wonderful blessing of music by ‘Krysalus’.
We look forward to seeing you at camp

HER STORIES A BOOK TELLING THE HISTORY OF THE
WORK AND MISSION OF THE
WOMEN OF CHURCHES OF CHRIST
IN QUEENSLAND
I have been given the honour and awesome task of, researching and collating a book. A book to tell the story of the work and
mission of the women of Churches of Christ in Queensland.
Many hours have already been put into this book but to bring it to a place of completion I need your help. The history spans
115 years and will cover the work of Women’s State Conference, which started 100 years ago, Camps, Rally Days, work of indi-
vidual groups, a roll of honour plus so much more.
You can contact me by email @ [email protected] - call me on hm: 07 5598 6934 / mob: 0418 199 010 - by post to 4 Jalin-
da Court, Currumbin Valley 4223
As I trust solely on God to give me the strength and guidance for this incredible task, I seek you prayers for myself and those
who are helping
