E D I T O R I A LWatercraft Engine Evolution

In recent years, marine engine technology has increased it’sdependency on computerised engine control systems andelectronics. A number of factors have prompted enginemanufacturers to evolve by installing sophisticated electronicsystems into their engine systems. One factor, EFI enginesystems have significantly increased in complexity in recentyears with the addition of many other systems such asSupercharging, which requires added electronics - used tosense and control boost pressure, operate the intercooler, readadditional sensors including control of associated superchargerfunctions. The major driving force behind engine evolution, isstrict emission laws set by governments - that are beingadopted by most countries gradually. Soon, all inboard petrolengines, including stern-drives will be fitted with emission con-trols to run more efficiently and to help minimize pollution.Routine servicing and maintenance jobs, that once only requireda toolbox full of basic mechanical tools is a thing of the past.

Today’s marine engines are complex and fine tuned - anddemand sophisticated diagnostic tools and computer programswith a greater demand of knowledge and expertise from MarineEngineers. For example, an OBD-M (On Board Diagnostics forMarine) system malfunction may appear to be fixed, howeverthe ECM may require the engine to attain specific operatingconditions before the component that was replaced is fullytested, so engineers will require some insight into how and whenthe ECM runs its component diagnostic tests. More emphasisto refer to factory service manuals will be required to determinewhen specific sensor and component tests are scheduled to berun by the ECM. The introduction of catalytic convertors, oxygensensors and closed loop fuel systems, also brings newdiagnostic challenges for engineers.

Eachmanufacturer offers its own diagnostic tool to provide coverageof its own engines, which can be expensive or even prohibitive.Outside the dealer network, only a limited number of companiesoffer specialist watercraft engine diagnostic tools - for marineengineers and portside workshops. Choosing the rightdiagnostic tool for your business is crucial and naturally, it’s bestto do your homework and research all the available tools in themarket before buying, including finding out about after-care andwarranty. The new Renault software willinitially appear under Beta as V2.This software automaticallycalculates and enters the PinCode when key programming,so there is no requirement toread the pin code separately.

However the option to read thepin code independently stillexists, if required.

Additionally, for a short period oftime a V1 option will also exist inthe menu, allowing keys to beprogrammed, as currently (i.e byentering the pin code manually).For the Clio III, Laguna III andKoleos vehicles, ADS104,ADS161 and ADS180 is required.All other vehicles require onlyADS104 and ADS161.

On this page you willalso find the correct cable and dongle to be used.Part Search allows you to search by software partnumber by selecting software from a drop downlist. Once a part number is selected a list of vehiclemanufacturers including models and a year startand end date will be displayed. This identifieswhich manufacturer the software can be used for.Software Search is the third option for finding theright software. When this option is selected a fulllist of manufacturers is displayed, in alphabeticalorder, including software part numbers & anyadditional software required for key or remoteprogramming.

For customer convenience, there is a print optionavailable for all three search options.

Currently, IQ is a website only facility however,Advanced Diagnostics are developing IQ Apps, forthe iphone and android type smartphones & theseshould be available soon.

IQ will be a live database that will be constantlyupdated. Advanced Diagnostics appreciate that IQwill also have errors in it, and have included acustomer feedback facility for your feedback,enabling us to correct any mistakes when we knowabout them.
