Operating Instructions Advanced Diagnostics System

and Operator Interface Terminal

The Advanced Diagnostics System (ADS) monitors strategic points of the Top Drive unit and it’s associated control and power system. Rather than just report problems or deviations from normal operating parameters (usually done via indicator lights), the ADS makes intelligent assessments of a malfunction and reports the possible causes in plain language to the operator. Such messages may include: • On-line Help text, for quick access to operating and troubleshooting instructions • Cable or connection failure of power or control cables • Presence of defective components, identified to the sub assembly or individual part • Parameters “out of adjustment” with anticipated errors or deviations of expected results • Incorrect sequence of operation, with suggestions of how to achieve expected results The ADS shares the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) that handles all the Top Drive Control functions and communicates with the operator via an Allen Bradley PanelView 1000 Touch Sensitive Display unit mounted in a stainless steel enclosure. This enclosure is mounted on a removable stand allowing for height, pan and tilt adjustment. It must be installed within reach of the Driller. This Operator Interface Terminal display consists of several different screens displaying system parameters and alarm status, and allowing inputting of correction factors and shutdown of non-essential functions to continue with strategic operations in case of an equipment failure. The various screens and functions of the Operator Interface Terminal are described in the following pages.

WELCOME SCREEN The ADS (PANELVIEW) TERMINAL is powered on whenever the CONTROL CONSOLE is powered on. The WELCOME screen is displayed whenever the terminal is powered on and the OFF – AUX – ENABLE switch on the CONTROL CONSOLE is in the OFF position. The WELCOME screen will remain on until the OFF – AUX – ENABLE switch is moved to either the AUX or ENABLE position, or power is removed from the terminal. The Welcome banner will list the current version of program and the top drive serial number for which it was intended.

ALARM BANNER

The ALARM/MESSAGE philosophy of the ADS is as follows: ALARMS – any condition or malfunction that could harm humans or machinery.

HELP MESSAGE – any condition that will inhibit the execution of the presently desired function or operation.

MAINTENANCE MESSAGE – any malfunction or condition that requires attention, but does

not disable the functions of the Top Drive.

The ALARM BANNNER is a display that pops up over the current screen and disables

the covered objects. The ALALARM BANNER contains a message description of the alarm condition and the Acknowledge Alarm button. When the alarm in the banner is acknowledged or cleared, the next alarm is displayed, or the banner disappears when all alarms have been acknowledged. The ALARM BANNER can hold only one message, displayed in chronological order.

The ALARM BANNER remains on the terminal display until: • The driller presses the Acknowledge button • The Terminal enters Configuration Mode The Acknowledge button acknowledges receipt of the alarm currently displayed in the ALARM BANNER. Pressing the Ack Button removes the Alarm from the terminal display and the alarm is marked acknowledged in the Alarm History, but this does not clear the alarm condition.

Page 23: TOP DRIVE DRILLING SYSTEM ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS SYSTEM

Operator Interface Terminal

Revision April 2011 21 of 45

ALARM HISTORY

The ALARM HISTORY records information on triggered alarms. Each time an alarm is triggered, it is added to the History List. The maximum number is 100, and the most recent alarm is displayed at the top of the list. The scrollable Alarm History field is displayed on the ALARM HISTORY screen, and also in a scrollable field at the bottom of the AUXILIARY MODE screen.

Acknowledge Indicators:

= Acknowledged Alarm = Unacknowledged Alarm

• Alarm Time • Alarm Date (only on Alarm History screen) • Alarm Acknowledge Time • Alarm Text

If the Alarm History is full when the alarm is triggered, the most recent alarm is added to the top of the list and:

• The oldest acknowledged alarm is removed from the Alarm History. • If all acknowledged alarms have been removed from the Alarm History, the oldest

unacknowledged alarm is removed. The driller can acknowledge an alarm in the History List by using the up and down arrow keys on the terminal to select an alarm and then pressing the Enter key.
