Timeless holiday programs

October has passed and we have put away our costumes for another year. Thousands at-tended Art in October events – visiting the Mourners at the Dallas Museum of Art, touring the historic churches, enjoying the simulcast of Don Giovanni and dancing to the sounds of bands from Booker T. It was a great month of cel-ebration of the many offerings of the Dallas Arts District.

There is so much to celebrate in the district that it takes a whole month. And as we look on the horizon there is much more to

come. As those of you who live, work or play in the district know, the construction that we pass each day is a visual reminder of the changes to come.

For the Arts District 2012 will be a banner year. The City Performance Hall will open late spring/early summer and will be the last arts venue to open in the district. At the other end of the district Dallas’ newest high rise residential building, Museum Tower, will open. The tower will overlook another signature venue for the Arts District and for Dallas – “The Park.” Finally, to tie it all together will be the extension of the trol-ley, along Olive St., providing greater access to the DART rail line.

These large infrastructure projects are important, but they will need to be sea-soned with more programming, more art, more retail and more people. Anticipate more public and interactive art, more programming on the exterior as well as the interior of the buildings. Gourmet food trucks will bring more dining options. Please stay tuned as our neighborhood evolves and our city changes.

Sarah Perot and John Eagle will join an esteemed list of arts and culture philanthropists when they are honored with the 2011 award during the 33rd Annual Silver Cup Award Luncheon presented by Chase and Neiman Marcus on March 4 at noon at the Hilton Anatole, Chantilly Ballroom.

Civic Volunteer and former Dallas mayor Annette Strauss created the Silver Cup Award Luncheon, which has been held an-nually since 1979, to recognize one man and one woman for their outstanding contributions to the arts in Dallas. The award symbol-izes philanthropic excellence in the areas of art and culture.

TACA (The Arts Community Alliance) exists to champion the performing arts. TA-CA’s mission is to provide financial support and services and to increase public aware-ness and participation in the performing arts of North Texas improving the quality of life for citizens of all economic, social and ethnic backgrounds.

In 2010 TACA awarded a third consecutive $1 million in grants to a diverse group of North Texas’ performing arts organizations, from the large and established to the new-ly emerging. TACA grants will be awarded Jan. 31 at the Dee add Charles Wyly Theatre.

TACA funds support dance, music, theater, opera, musical theater and educa-tional outreach programs viewing its role as cultivating the artists, the patrons and the volunteers of the future.

TACA’s supporters are committed to having a rich array of cultural opportunities in North Texas. They are enthusiastic arts patrons who share a vision of a dynamic and exciting cultural community. Members act as ambassadors, helping TACA build commu-nity, provide financial infrastructure and raise the bar for every arts organization.

For more information about TACA, TACA events including the Silver Cup Award Luncheon or how to get involved with TACA, call 214-520-3930 or visit taca-arts.org.

WRR invites you to a pair of birthday celebrations and it’s you, the listener, who gets the gift -- of great music. The station honors the lives and legacies of Beethoven and Mozart Dec. 16 and Jan. 27 respectively.

Their music has fostered a deep admiration from audiences for more than 200 years. Each composer communicated directly to the heart, though Beethoven managed to do so in a particularly commanding manner. Noted musician Ferruccio Busoni once wrote that with Beethoven, “the human element first came to the fore as the primary argument of musical art.”

Mozart is forever known as the child prodigy who matured into a resolute genius. Listeners worldwide feel his exquisite craftsmanship resulted in music that could only play out just as Mozart wrote it.

So what’s to hear? On Beethoven’s birthday, listeners will enjoy several heroic sounding pieces, such as Symphony No. 3, Eroica, and Symphony No. 5 and Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor. These, when paired with many introspective works, will offer the listener more of a complete portrait of the composer.

Similarly, listeners can rediscover less-frequently performed Mozart gems along with some of his best-loved works, including Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, various concertos and the later symphonies.
