Kawartha Club Bingo

Shocking!

I think most who attended the Kawartha Club Bingo November BAH reception would describe their experience as shocking. Unless you have been to KCB in the last couple of years, I suspect your perception of this venue is completely different from the reality.

KCB is a fi rst-class entertainment facility that is bright, vibrant, aesthetically pleasing and very comfortable. The personnel here compliment the atmosphere or even surpass it with their professional service and welcoming attitude.

This exciting venue was a terrifi c place for Chamber members to network. It is also an excellent choice to bring a group

of friends or employees for a session of fun and enjoyment.

The younger bingo enthusiasts will be happy to know that “E-Bingo” is available here. Additional electronic terminals for playing bingo and other games will replace the traditional “bingo card marking exercise” over time as investment efforts continue in modernizing the industry.

KCB also supports approximately 43 non-profi t and charitable organizations. They have shared over $1.7 million in a given year with these groups, who support our community needs.

Thank you Kawartha Club Bingo for your hospitality and for making us aware of another great attraction in our beautiful city.

Helping your business get to the next level.

Karen August, Director of Development, for the Market Hall was our speaker on Tuesday, October 13th, 2009.

The Market Hall has been designated with funding for a $9.7 million dollar project in total to rehabilitate the heritage exterior and perform major updates including new elevators, roof, and heating, cooling and new theatre entrance on the South side of the building. We were able to view the preliminary drawings of this new development.

The theatre will have superior acoustics, superb sightlines, and a gracious lobby area. Their prime target is to retain the heritage charm, bring heritage features back to prominence and retain the fl exibility of the theatre space.

They have a 25 year history of performing arts in the space with many functions happening.

The Market Hall will be fundraising for the theatre components such as seats and sound and lighting equipment.

Renovations begin in Feb 2010 and will take a year to complete.

The Market Hall was also a fi nalist in our 2009 Excellence Awards in the Not-For-Profi t Category.

Copyright Reform is Long OverdueThe Canadian Chamber was pleased to participate in a recent copyright reform consultation with Industry Minister Tony Clement. This provided an opportunity for the Canadian Chamber to present its views on reforms to copyright and intellectual property rights.

Reform is long overdue. Canada’s Copyright Act must align with international standards and today’s technology. The Canadian Chamber supports some of the key principles in Bill C-61 that was introduced in June 2008 to update copyright legislation.

First, updates to the Copyright Act must support creativity and innovation. This is critical to growing and maintaining the knowledge-based economy.

Second, exclusive rights awarded under the Copyright Act must provide rights holders with the recognition and remuneration essential to sustaining creativity and innovation. These rights must be properly balanced with ensuring that consumers have access to – and ease of use of – these works. Copyright protection under the Act should also be updated to include the recognition of technical protection measures in a manner that promotes cultural innovation, competition and investment. Getting the proper balance in new copyright legislation is vital.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Council (CIPC), which falls under the Canadian Chamber’s banner, is focused on improving intellectual property rights protection in Canada and will continue to advocate for much-needed copyright reform.

Long Term Disability (LTD) vs Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and the Importance of Reporting Claims

If and when an employee becomes disabled due to a workplace injury or illness, and they are covered by both LTD through their employer’s group benefi t plan and WSIB, they have the option of making a claim with one or the other provider. It’s in such a person’s best interest to make some inquiries to fi nd out which route is the best one to take if they should ever suffer a work related disability.

When they do they will fi nd out that most LTD plans pay a monthly income of between 60% and 67% of an employee’s gross earnings. Many fi rms have their employees pay 100% of their LTD premium so that the disability income will be received tax free. If however, an employer pays any portion of the LTD premium the disability income will be taxable as income to the employee.

WSIB premium payments, on the other hand, are paid entirely by the employer and it’s Benefi t for Loss of Earnings (LOE) pays 85% of a disabled

person’s take home pay. Although it sounds like WSIB pays more it doesn’t, even when you take into consideration what many employees pay towards their LTD coverage. Mind you, WSIB’s LOE payments are adjusted each year to take infl ation into account and not all LTD plans include the equivalent Cost of Living Adjustment provision.

In addition to their LOE, WSIB also offers the following impressive range of benefi ts:

* Benefi t for Non-Economic Loss (NEL)

* Loss of Retirement Income Benefi t (LRI)

* Benefi t for Future Economic Loss (FEL)

* Health Care Benefi ts

* Health Care Equipment and Supplies

* The Occupational Disease and Survivor Benefi ts Program

* Benefi ts for Seriously Injured Workers

* Compensation Amounts for Survivors

If an employee chooses to fi le their disability claim with WSIB, their disability should also be reported to their LTD insurance provider. Employers should contact their Broker/Agent who provides their fi rm with their group benefi t plan whenever they have an employee off work due to a disability. As most LTD plans have 120 day waiting periods this should be done on or around the 90th day of the disability.

Regardless of who the employee has submitted their disability claim to, the group benefi t provider will waive the employee’s LTD premium after six months of disability. The life insurance premium could also be waived depending upon the seriousness of the disability and at the discretion of the insuring company. Another benefi t of reporting an employee’s disability to their insurance company is if an employee is ever cut off WSIB the disability will have been established and the claim’s process will be quicker. It will also allow the insurer to put holds on the disabled employee’s salary and LTD coverage until they return to work.
