Welding Fume Extraction for Singapore Maritime Academy

Leeden Welding Sdn Bhd’s Johor Branch officially opened on 23rd July 2011, marking an important milestone of Leeden’s aggressive expansion into the Johor region. Strategically located at the junction within the Johor Pasir Gudang, Masai area, Leeden’s new branch emphasizes the importance of reaching out to customers and principals in Malaysia. The closer proximity to Malaysian customers also serves to provide better service and response to their needs.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Leeden’s Lead Independent Director, Mr Leslie Struys together with 6 of our Management Staff, Mr Edwin Chow, Mr Alex Ong, Mr BT Ong, Mr Adrian Hong, Mr Mohd Hafidz and Mr Tim Lim in a traditional ribbon cutting ceremony, balloon releasing and lion dance. The opening launch was witnessed by Leeden’s staff, business partners and customers from Singapore, Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Held at Holiday Inn Atrium, Leeden Limited’s annual Dinner &

Dance at Holiday Inn Atrium was a celebration at its best. The program started off at the ballroom’s doorstep, with guests receiving generous door gifts and taking part in a sure-win lucky dip upon registration. A speech by CEO of Leeden Limited Mr Steven Tham kicked-off the fun-filled night ahead. Largely made up of Leeden’s staff and business associates, the 300 odd-strong crowd warmed up quickly. Boisterous cheers and shouts were heard as Mr Tham went on to display artistic talents – a self-drawn portrait of a tortoise as memento he presented to COO of Leeden Limited Mr Kelvin Lee onstage. The tortoise, Mr Tham later explained, symbolized longevity and the fearlessness in taking risks – like how the tortoise sticks its neck out.

The night was made more meaningful when emcee Ansel from the Welding Division announced that the Dinner & Dance event was held in conjunction to Mr Tham’s 60th birthday. Guests present cheered and clapped as Mr Lee presented Mr Tham a birthday gift upon a cake-cutting session. Guests

enjoyed a nine-course dinner whilst ten karaoke contestants took centre stage to crone and belt out tunes of various genres.Amidst the laughter and joy, the crowd quietened when Long Service Awards were given out by Mr Tham and Mr Lee. The moment was heartwarming when COO Mr Kelvin Lee and Ms Catherine Lim, our tea lady, were the recipients of the 35 years long service award. Filled with lots of laughter and cheer, the Leeden Dinner & Dance event was a great success.

Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) in Singapore Polytechnic provides specialized education catering to the maritimeindustry and welding being the key skill in marine engineering is essential for all full-time diploma students. As SingaporePolytechnic is ISO 14001 certified, it is committed to provide a safe environment for the students during their trainingin the welding workshop.

Leeden was invited to propose a solution to provide a safe working environment for the students. Leeden Safety Team is pleased to recommend Nederman Solutions to Singapore Polytechnic. Hazardous welding fumes are extracted using Nederman telescopic arms connected to a centralized ducting and fan system. Selection of the telescopic arm is based on the consideration of tight space constraints within the booth area. Leeden’s Safety division has since increased the extraction points from 10 to 18 stations recently and Singapore Polytechnic was satisfied with the performance of the Nederman fume extraction system.

Having attended the DBI SALA™ Block Repair Training course in US this September, Mr Joseph Chua and Mr Au Sheng Lao of Leeden Safety Division are now trained and certified to repair and service of Self Retracting Lifelines (SRL) blocks.
