(average for week): $1,683.80 Thank you from a grateful parish.
Dear Parishioners, Some of you may remember Fr Michael Lang CO of the London Oratory, who visited us a few years ago in his capacity as delegate of the Procurator General of the Congregations of the Oratory of St Philip Neri. A few days ago he preached a very fine homily in his livestreamed
Mass on the Gospel relating the appearing of the Risen Christ to two disciples at Emmaus. He mentioned that the Risen Lord seemed to hide or veil His identity from the disciples at first in order to awaken them to the true meaning of the Scriptures, which then allowed them to recognise Him in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, at which point He disappeared from view again. This disappearing is to demonstrate that those disciples - and we who also count ourselves disciples of Christ - should learn that He is to be found, that we are to search for Him, in His Presence in the Sacrament of the
Altar, towards which the meaning of the Scriptures leads us. In this time of suspended public Masses, closed churches and restricted access to the Sacraments, our hearts should be fired even more to seek the Real Presence of the Risen Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, we say. May we utilise the present difficulties and restrictions to enliven our faith in the Real Presence by acts of spiritual communion, and ask the Lord to permit, soon, conditions for a return to public celebrations of Mass, as well as Eucharistic Adoration, so that our hearts may be aflame with love for the Lord who abides with us in the Sacrament of the altar.
A heartfelt "thank you" to all who contribute to our parish through cash offerings or through electronic giving. As you know, with the suspension of public Masses, collections are not taking place, which places some strain on our parish finances through considerably reduced income. Everyone will be facing the task of preparing for the financial difficulties that lie ahead. Please remember the parish in your thinking ahead and planning. We are most grateful for the assistance you feel you are able to offer in this difficult time. Details for electronic giving can be found below. in Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong

ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day Mass will be live-streamed from St Stephen’s Cathedral at 11.30am. Please go to:
https://brisbanecatholic.org.au/multimedia/web-cast/
From Graham Perrett MP: The spread of coronavirus has meant our local RSLs will be unable to hold ANZAC Day commemorations on Saturday. Understandably, many returned service personnel, their families and the broader community are disappointed that we will be unable to gather to pay our respects. So this year we will commemorate
their sacrifices and service differently. RSL Queensland is encouraging you to ‘Light up the Dawn’ on Saturday at 6am by standing in your driveway, on your balcony, or in your living room to remember all those who have served and sacrificed. I’ve pledged to ‘Light up the Dawn’ this Anzac Day. You can make your pledge at: https://www.rslqld.org/Whats-On/ANZAC-Day.
You can hold your own commemorative service wherever you are at home at 6am by streaming the audio clip on the RSL Queensland website. The Audio Clip can be accessed at: https://www.rslqld.org/News/Latest-News/Light-up-the-Dawn. The ABC will also be providing extensive coverage across the radio, television, digital and social media platforms, including:-
* Coverage of the National Commemorative Service at 5:30am local time;
* A two-minute quiet reflection at 11:30am local time on the national and local radio services.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori:
"My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."

ACT OF PERFECT CONTRITION
Through an act of Perfect Contrition you can receive the forgiveness of your sins outside of confession, even mortal sins, provided that you determine yourself
to correct your life and make a firm resolution to go to sacramental confession as soon as you can, when it becomes possible. Remember, these are extraordinary measures only, for times when a priest is truly not available to you.
Perfect Contrition is sorrow and detestation of sin arising out of the love of God. One way of exciting this contrition in our hearts is by considering the passion of Jesus Christ and making acts of love for Him. We can also think of the infinite love which God has for
us, and express sorrow in our heart in the presence of this great love which we have offended.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for all the sins of my life simply because by them I have offended You and Your infinite love. I desire never to offend You again. Grant that my soul my enter into Your grace, and remain united to You forever. Amen.
Third Sunday of Easter Year A, 25th/26th April, 2020
MASS READINGS
First Reading: Acts 2:14.22-33
On the day of Pentecost Peter stood up with the Eleven and addressed the crowd in a loud voice: `Men of Israel, listen to what I am going to say: Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God by the miracles and portents and signs that God worked through him when he was among you, as you all know. This man, who was put into your power by the deliberate intention and foreknowledge of God, you took and had crucified by men outside the Law. You killed him, but God raised him to life, freeing him from the pangs of Hades; for it was impossible for him to be held in its power since, as David says of him: I saw the Lord before me always, for with him at my right hand nothing can shake me. So my heart was glad and my tongue cried out with joy: my body, too, will rest in the hope that you will not abandon my soul to Hades nor allow your holy one to experience corruption. You have made known the way of life to me, you will fill me with gladness through your presence.' Brothers, no one can deny that the patriarch David himself is dead and buried: his tomb is still with us. But since he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn him an oath to make one of his descendants succeed him on the throne, what he foresaw and spoke about was the resurrection of the Christ: he is the one who was not abandoned to Hades, and whose body did not experience corruption. God raised this man Jesus to life, and all of us are witnesses to that. Now raised to the heights by God's right hand, he has received from the Father the Holy Spirit, who was promised, and what you see and hear is the outpouring of that Spirit.'
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Responsorial Psalm 15
(Said by all)
Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you. I say to the Lord: `You are my God. O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup; it is you yourself who are my prize.' I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel, who even at night directs my heart. I keep the Lord ever in my sight: since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even my body shall rest in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead, nor let your beloved know decay. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand happiness for ever.
Second Reading: 1Peter 1:17-21
If you are acknowledging as your Father one who has no favourites and judges everyone according to what he has done, you must be scrupulously careful as long as you are living away from your home. Remember, the ransom that was paid to free you from the useless way of life your ancestors handed down was not paid in anything corruptible, neither in silver nor gold, but in the precious blood of a lamb without spot or stain, namely Christ; who, though known since before the world was made, has been revealed only in our time, the end of the ages, for your sake. Through him you now have faith in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory for that very reason – so that you would have faith and hope in God.
The Word of the Lord
Response: Thanks be to God
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia! Lord Jesus, make your word plain to us: make our hearts burn with love when you speak. Alleluia!
Gospel: Luke 24:13-35
Two of the disciples of Jesus were on their way to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking together about all that had happened. Now as they talked this over, Jesus himself came up and walked by their side; but something prevented them from recognising him. He said to them, `What matters are you discussing as you walk along?' They stopped short, their faces downcast. Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, `You must be the only person staying in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.' ‘What things?' he asked. `All about Jesus of Nazareth' they answered `who proved he was a great prophet by the things he said and did in the sight of God and of the whole people; and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had him crucified. Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not all: two whole days have gone by since it all happened; and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning, and when they did not find the body, they came back to tell us they had seen a vision of angels who declared he was alive. Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but of him they saw nothing.’ Then he said to them, `You foolish men! So slow to believe the full message of the prophets! Was it not ordained that the Christ should suffer and so enter into his glory?' Then, starting with Moses and going through all the prophets, he explained to them the passages throughout the scriptures that were about himself. When they drew near to the village to which they were going, he made as if to go on; but they pressed him to stay with them. `It is nearly evening' they said `and day is almost over.' So he went to stay with them. Now while he was with them at the table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, `Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?' They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled together with their companions, who said to them, `Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.' Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at the breaking of bread.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
Memorial Acclamation: Number Three: Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
