Another day in the Meatpacking District and it always seems to have one constant: change. We are starting to see real progress in the public construction with cobbling well underway and the curbline fully installed and we can begin to imagine the bright future: public spaces filled with patrons and visitors eating lunch and sipping coffee, sitting to take in the best people watching in NYC, and activations that showcase the latest in fashion, tech, and culture. We are on the verge of a reawakening and a rediscovery of the city’s favorite historic district. I, for one, am excited to see the way it will fully come alive.
This past year, we saw the most successful Open Market yet, with over 800 guests and $250,000 gross revenue. New programming — Very Merry Holiday Hours and Swing into Spring — aimed at uniting the ground floor retail community and driving economic development spurred sales and foot traffic. Harvest Fest reached new heights and it was another successful summer at The Sweat Sessions. And with construction at Pier 55 progressing, there’s yet another reason to look toward the future with genuine excitement.
And now for more change, a change in leadership. For the last seven and a half years I have had the best job in the world, in the most vibrant corner of Manhattan. With all good things, the end can sneak up on you. I took over the leadership role of the business community in 2011 and was welcomed into the tight embrace of an incredible neighborhood. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be at the helm of the district and to lead us through some of its most dynamic projects to date.
Out of a deep desire to share how special the Meatpacking District is with the public, unique programming was born. From Open Market and Harvest Fest, The Sweat Sessions, Neighborhood Night Out and ARTech, to our Hook Up card, programming over the years has been about showcasing the depth of business and variety of opportunity that flourishes in the district.
I once wrote in a previous version of this letter, that a true neighborhood is not just about boundaries and proximity. The best neighborhoods inspire loyalty by those who spend time there through an authentic shared experience. It is this truth that makes it extremely hard to turn the page on a place I feel exemplifies this sentiment. I do so knowing that the Board of Directors and BID staff are deeply committed and will ensure your interests are kept at the forefront, and that vision for this community will continue to evolve.

THE SWEAT SESSIONSOutdoor Fitness Sessions

2017 The city’s favorite summer-long al fresco fitness and wellness program,the Sweat Sessions, welcomed over 5000 people throughout the season. Nearly every Tuesday from May through August, top studios and brands such as NW Method, Kore, 305 Fitness, NY Pilates, Exhale and Liftonic taught free 45-minute classes. Modalities included HIIT, yoga, barre, bootcamp, meditation, dance cardio and more. Post-workout, attendees “cooled down” at Samsung 837 over healthy bites and hydrating sips from area restaurants.

HARVEST FESTArtisanal Market + Seasonal Fair

The 5th Annual Harvest Fest, an outdoor artisanal market and seasonal fair, held on October 28, brought nearly 8000 visitors to the neighborhood. Free and open to the public, this beloved festival showcased local purveyors and NYC-based businesses sampling and selling unique foods and crafts.
Building on the event’s success from previous years, Harvest Fest continues to provide an occasion for families and children to experience and be exposed to the best of the district, while spending quality time outdoors.
The 2017 festival featured interactive entertainment and engaging activities, including a dog costume contest, VR experience hosted by Samsung 837, trick-or-treat bag making with Chelsea Market Baskets, Himalayan dog blessing ceremony with the Rubin Museum, and kids yoga classes.

Dubbed the unofficial kickoff to the spring shopping season, Open Market returned to Highline Stages on March 8, 2018. This unforgettable evening included food tastings and bespoke cocktails from 25 area restaurants and bars, sample sale shopping from the area top retailers, and music by Coco + Breezy. Meatpacking’s ultimate night out continued late into the evening with a VIP party hosted by TAO Downtown.
Four district icons served as co-chairs for this year’s event: Diane von Furstenberg, Founder and Co-Chairman of DVF; Andrew Rosen, Founder and CEO of Theory; Gary Kline, Co-Owner and CEO of Highline Stages; and Mazdack Rassi, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Milk. They were joined by a host committee that included a who’s who of the Meatpacking District and its supporters.
Open Market raises funds that go towards the capital improvement of the district. This year’s proceeds were earmarked for the 14th Street Master Plan.

Not that anyone needs an excuse to buy a whole season’s worth of clothing and goods, but Meatpacking retailers gave shoppers two days worth of exclusive incentives to do so. Very Merry Holiday Hours, in mid-December, and Swing into Spring this past April, activated the whole neighborhood. World-renowned brands such as DVF, Kiehl’s, and Theory, popular shops like lululemon, Intermix, and Paige, and New York staples such as Chelsea Market Baskets, Doyle & Doyle, Artist & Fleas and Lilla P, united to create a district-wide shopping extravaganza.
Participating businesses kept their doors open later in the evening to shoppers, while offering discounts up to 30% off purchases, drinks and snacks, free activities, and deluxe gifts with purchase. Shoppers enjoyed paper flower making at Paper Source, customized embroidery at rag & bone, self-indulgent mini treatments at Caudalie, live music at Trina Turk, and wine tastings at Little West Wines and so much more! Hundreds of locals came out to explore the district, spend dollars and experience unique in-store activities.
