Clinical practice

Bosnian and Herzegovinian Medical Students' Association "BoHeMSA", the Tuzla office regularly maintains its project "Clinical Practice". The project is being implemented within the Committee for Medical Education (SCOME), led by local officer Elmir Begić.

"Clinical practice" is a project that this year lasted for a month in the period of May-June academic year 2017/18, and active participation was taken by fifty students from the 3rd to the 6th year of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tuzla. The goal of the project was to introduce students with practical work at the clinic, such as blood extraction and parenteral drug use, i.e. practical work segments and medical skills.

Given the lack of practical knowledge that is being processed within the regular teaching curriculum, this project has served as a complement to already existing theoretical knowledge with the skills that every medical professional should have.

It is important to note that this is the second project of the Association that was licensed and accepted in the program of the International Federation of Students of Medicine (IFMSA) this year.

Coffee with candidates for the Presidency of BIH: Only concrete moves will fulfill the expectations of youth in BIH

The solution to the political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina is only possible if we make radical changes within parties that have been in power for the past 20 years, or if we offer completely new policies, there is no third solution "- said Boriša Falatar, candidate of Our Party for BIH Presidency Member at Coffee with young people from BIH.

Coffee with a candidate for BIH Presidency was attended by young people from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and they were interested in the visions offered by this candidate in the field of BIH's foreign policy, education sector, stopping the brain drain of youth from the country, as well as many other areas in which this the population encounters certain problems.

"Such events are necessary for young people in BIH. It would be great for similar events to be organized in other cities and parts of the country as they face numerous problems, and they need to see that someone is concerned about their needs." The participant who was at "Coffee with... candidate for member of the Presidency of BIH" came from Čelinac.

The young people have pointed out that only concrete moves are expected from future representatives and that they will not agree to less because of the fact that the saturation of the current politics has reached a peak.

In order to support the understanding of the youth in the electoral process for the Presidency of BIH, the Institute for Youth Development KULT will organize meetings of young people with candidates for the Presidency of BIH from June to October 2018.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are about 700,000 young people, who are defined by the youth laws as persons aged 15 to 30 years. Most young people have the right to vote, and the Institute for Youth Development KULT in this way wants to give them the opportunity to be electors, not voters because youth issues need and must be part of the political parties' program in BIH, and that it is high time that the highest level of government in his discourse puts young people as the primary focus.

The program "Coffee with ... presidential candidate" will be organized in Sarajevo, and for the presence on events on the Institute's website, young people from all over BIH up to 35 years old can apply, who want to be part of a constructive dialogue on the needs and challenges with which this population faces.

Young people can and should lobby

The participants of the 13th generation of trainings "Learn, Think and Act!" were taught lobbying and public advocacy in the fifth module.

Throughout the module, students were introduced to the types and levels of government, since it is important in the public-advocacy process to know the competencies of the institutions and to respect these competencies. Also, participants are familiarized with the basics of advocacy and lobbying, and through interaction they have acquired advocacy and lobbying skills both for their local civic initiatives that will be implemented in the coming period, as well as for the next advocacy initiatives that will come from them, with aiming to improve the situation in society.

Advocacy skills as the cornerstone of civic activism are very important for young activists to advocate and lobby for initiatives that will come from them alone, and who can advocate for improving the position of youth in society. The group was also visited by the central office of the Institute for Youth Development KULT, and met with the staff of the Institute, its departments and method of work.

Particularly inspiring for the participants was "Coffee with ... Draško Stanivuković", a councilor in the City of Banja Luka Assembly, who himself advocates for improving certain issues in his community. Draško's speech was inspiring, as well as tips for success he shared with young people, especially advice that they always look for themselves with what they can contribute to society.

The last day of the module on public advocacy and lobbying was used by students to learn more about the public aspect of public advocacy, how to create their messages about advocacy initiatives for the public, and how to better present them to the public.

The module was held at SPAJALICA Education and Entertainment Center and gathered 25 young people from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Active youth - a step forward towards common changes

Young people must be given the opportunity to initiate changes in their communities, the participants of the Active Youth - a step forward towards common changes initiative think. They have to understand and protect their rights, take on the main roles in the life of the community, which will enable them to shape their environment according to their own needs.

Youth activism is a key concept for advocating the change that we want to see and it is very important that creativity, inspiration and active participation of young people in all aspects of life are what shapes the community and the world in accordance with the desired standards and needs.

If we want to encourage change in our communities and improve our environment, we must encourage local youth activism. We need to find innovative methods that will restore the creativity and energy of young people in our everyday life.

They have identified organizations from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Slovakia that implement the Active Youth - a step forward towards common changes initiative.

In the framework of the initiative in Belgrade, training for a group of young people from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovakia, Kosovo *, Croatia, Macedonia, Greece and Albania took place from 6 to 10 June 2018.

The aim was to help participants strengthen youth participation and activism and adapt it to current dynamics and new circumstances in their communities.

"During my training I learned a lot and met great people. The trainers and the whole team are very approachable and I am very motivated to do something in my country. I cannot wait to start working on something in Albania. "- Eldijona Shukallari, Tirana Albania.

Youth and youth workers between the ages of 24 and 35, through training, have explored different approaches to address local youth problems in all countries where the initiative is being implemented. At the same time, the training served as a platform for finding common topics and problems in which young people can work together and act in their local communities.

"Training for me was creative, inspired me to think about how to have an impact in the community we live in. I felt that I was not alone and that there were still young people that could help me. The training was very inspiring and showed me that some things in the region can be solved by joint efforts "- said Zana Sulajdžić, Travnik BIH.

After the training, young people from all participating countries will work on local initiatives to test different approaches to solving youth problems, which will be shown through the publication. Part of the initiative supported by the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe is the Institute for Youth Development KULT.

Activism in action

Visoko in June was a meeting place and activism. The first Youth Activist Festival "Kriv(a) sam", which was held in this city from 20 to 24 June 2018, offered interesting activities aimed at awakening activism among young people. Within the festival, street actions, concerts, educational workshops dominated by young people were organized.

During the festival, young people had the opportunity to learn about the importance of young people's participation in decision-making processes, to speak with municipal, cantonal and federal councilors, advocates about the position of youth in Visoko and Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also creatively express themselves through literary and art workshops. Participation in creative workshops was also an occasion for young people to send a message to politicians through an exhibition in one of the busiest streets in the city. The Youth Activist Festival "Kriv(a) sam" was organized by NGO Young Volunteers from Visoko with the financial support of the Institute for Youth Development KULT, and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports ZDK.

World Refugee Day

The Youth Organization Svitac celebrated this day with participants of the ages 4-7 and 8+. Participants of the ages 4-7 years read the story, written by a daily coordinator, adapted to the theme of the day and the age of the participants - World Refugee Day. After that, they discussed this topic, and they concluded that all children in the world should have their own home and that no one has the right to expel them.

In the afternoon workshop, the daily coordinator, together with international and local volunteers, devised a theater piece, where the participants had an interactive participation. At the end of the workshop, the participants wrote their thoughts, wishes and messages to their displaced children of the world.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

In November 2001, the UNESCO General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and proclaimed May 21 the World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. Culture encompasses a comprehensive lifestyle, a general system of values, traditions, arts, beliefs. On this day, there is an opportunity to expand knowledge about the value of cultural diversity and the incentive to live in peace, dialogue and openness.

The Youth Organization Svitac, together with international and local volunteers, organized a workshop for participants from 4-7 years on this topic. Participants used water colors and tempers to leave a hand on paper. Of these drawings, a paper chain is made as a symbol of communion. The first group also left their hands on hammer paper, which the afternoon group painted and printed with messages of peace and communion, and decorated it. Both groups had the opportunity to look at a video on the workshops, adapted to their age on the subject of cultural diversity and dialogue. Workshops were held in the Youth Center of the Brčko District of BIH.

For July, the continuation of all regular workshops of the Youth Organization

Svitac is planned.

Budget Accountability Network

On June 20, PRONI Center participated in the final event of the "Budget Accountability Network" within the Civil Society Sustainability Program in BIH (CSSP).

Conference "Youth Countering the Violent Extremism" held

A key identity for combating extremism should be the identity of the citizen, said Dion van der Berg of the Dutch peacekeeping organization PAX at the conference in Sarajevo on the eve of the conference entitled "Youth Countering the Violent Extremism".

This is a conference organized by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and PRONI Center for Youth Development Brčko, with a focus on the participation of young people in activities oriented towards the suppression of violent extremism. The conference was held on June 12, 2018.

The conference is a partnership project of the PRONI Center for Youth Development Brčko, the Youth Resource Center Tuzla and the peace organization PAX from the Netherlands, which is realized with the support of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in BIH through the MATRA program.

Dion van der Berg also stressed the need for more intense engagement in the fight against violent extremism in view of the phenomenon that young people globally are increasingly attracted by extreme ideologies.

He assessed that it was a threat against which, in the long term, the most efficient way to fight is through the further democratization of society, that is, by promoting fundamental democratic values and human rights.

Commenting on a journalistic inquiry on youth and extreme ideologies, Van der Berg underlined the importance of engagement and the fight against division among people and nations, pointing out that the key issue in this regard is that, in fact, it makes the identity of each individual, i.e. "citizens are acting in accordance with the law ..."

Jasmin Jašarević and Dejan Rađen from PRONI Center for Youth Development Brčko and Fatima Krivošija from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bosnia and Herzegovina pointed out various aspects of the fight against violent extremism, stressing the importance of joint engagement of all available resources - domestic and international institutions, non-governmental organizations, the media in the fight against the phenomenon of violence, extremism and radicalism.

According to the research, the focus is on the analysis and ways of eliminating hate speech and violence manifested through social networks, and the starting point for the debate is a survey conducted in BIH on a sample of 551 young respondents from 60 municipalities, which testifies to the high percentage of those who were victims of violence or hate speech on the Internet, and, often, and the presence of socially unacceptable beliefs.

It was noted, among other things, that young people are the most sensitive population, and that their inclusion is necessary for the production of positive narratives, as well as successful measures to combat radicalization, including the need to promote convincing alternatives to extreme violence.

Some of the objectives of the conference are - informing young people from BIH about the importance of combating hate speech on the Internet, spreading awareness about the importance of getting to know each other, cooperation and mutual respect, and helping young people in multiethnic environments, as well as connecting young human rights activists to map hate speech on the Internet and develop instruments with constructive responses.

The overall objective of the project is to provide support and increase the participation of young people in activities aimed at the prevention of violent extremism by prioritizing significant engagement mechanisms at the local and national levels, as outlined in UN resolutions 2178 and 2250, and provide physical, social and emotional safe and incentive environment for youth participation in preventing violent extremism among citizens, Van der Berg said.

Young actors from Brčko performed the play "More than a thousand words"

On June 9, the premiere of the play "More than a Thousand Words" (Više od hiljadu riječi) was held at the Culture Center in Brčko. It was created as part of the project "Ispeci pa reci", implemented by PRONI Center for Youth Development, with the financial support of the Schüler Helfen Leben Foundation. The project gathers 20 young people aged 15 to 30, and deals with hate speech by applying scenic art. The project itself runs from December 15, 2017. until June 30, 2018, and active work on the creation of this performance began in January.

The show, which points to the sources and the presence of this problem, was created by 20 young people from Brčko, with the professional help of the director Sandra Ikanović-Jovičić. In addition to acting, project participants had the opportunity to try out photography, PR, costumes and scenography.

"I am pleased that we have succeeded in implementing this project, because PRONI Center has been working for youth for 20 years, and the techniques of theater are a powerful tool and give incredible results if we direct them in the right way," said the coordinator of the project and employee of PRONI Center Adina Halilović, in statement for Otisak.ba.

After the premiere, a round table was held with the participants of the project and representatives of the media.

The young team, together with the coordinator and the director, shared her impressions of the work on the show and her experiences on the topic. They emphasized the importance of dealing with hate speech and its presence in the everyday lives of young people.

"This is one of the few and perhaps the only project of its kind in Brčko after a long time. It showed us that we have high-quality young people and, if we give them space and time to show off, they make incredible results. Hate speech is a very broad topic and one of those to be dealt with over and over again, but for this show, we focused our attention on the Internet because it is a topic that is current and something that young people face every day. All the characters and stories that make up the show are inspired by the real events that these people have experienced or know the person who has lived through it. We wanted to implement a project that would promote local activism and encourage young people in Brčko to actively and voluntarily deal with topics that essentially concern them, explore and find solutions for the same, yet at the same time learn, build their own personality and become recognizable as active community members and responsible local community leaders, "said the coordinator for the end of the conversation.

In addition to the premiere in Brčko, the participants had the opportunity to perform the show in the four local communities of the Brčko District of BIH, on June 10 in Rašljani and Vučilovac, and on Thursday, June 14 in Grčica and Gornji Zovik. After each performance, a round table was organized during which the protagonists interacted with the audience and were able to exchange views on the problem, participation in the project and the process of creating a play.
