Dear COSMOS Students,
COSMOS is almost over and I’m sitting here thinking about all that we’ve experienced and what we’ve accomplished. We’ve had so much fun together and learned so much at the same time. It seems like just yesterday you got free games from Electronic Arts, went on a whale watch to see wondrous sea life, had ice cream at Marianne’s, watched a cubed bubble be made, got covered head to toe in sand at the beach, or stared at the sky. I hope this experience has been everything you’ve hoped it would be. After my first year with COSMOS, I am absolutely amazed at the talent that each of you has, both academically and artistically. We tell everyone that our students are the cream of the crop, and this year, there’s no exception. It’s one thing to read your application; it’s another to meet this intelligent and gifted young mind who amazes us with his or her talents and gifts. I hope for all of you this summer has been a blast; it has been for me and the rest of my staff. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t hear from an instructor, a teacher fellow, a resident assistant, or a guest speaker how about impressed they were with your talents and abilities. I hope you’ve come to not only appreciate the subject matter you’ve studied in the past few weeks, but you’ve also come to enjoy other areas like computer science, molecular biology, astrophysics, organic chemistry, and logic. I hope many of you not only have seen how capable you are of succeeding in college, but you’ve considered what you’d like to focus on in college. If you decide to major in math or science wonderful! If you don’t, then please continue your interest in math and science in other ways. Please remember how your interest and background in math and science will always fare you well.
Finally, as you leave, remember the friends you’ve made – young and old. You should cherish the relationships you’ve made with your classmates, resident assistants, instructors, teacher fellows, and staff members. You never know where life will take you and it never hurts to have a friend along the way. COSMOS is not only about math and science; it’s an enriching and empowering summer experience that makes you feel comfortable about the choices you make and the person you are. Here at COSMOS, we embrace our differences and encourage your love for math and science. Of all the things I hope for, my greatest hope is that you will leave this program feeling more confident, more knowledgeable, and more able to face the challenges ahead of you. I believe in all of you. I hope you believe in yourselves too. Best wishes to you, Dr. Amy Stucky
