4 A PRESENT FOR THE DOCTOR Hundreds and thousands of monkeys are sick. There’s a lot of work for John Dolittle to do. First he vaccinates • all the monkeys that are not sick. After that he puts all the sick monkeys together. But he has a problem. He needs more help. There aren’t enough healthy monkeys to look after the sick ones. That evening he sits down and writes a note to all the animals in the jungle. Dear Animals of the Jungle, Many monkeys are sick. They must stay in bed, but I haven’t got enough nurses • to look after them. Please come and help me. Doctor John Dolittle. The next day the animals of the jungle come to see him. Their leader, the lion, is angry. ‘I’m the King of the Jungle,’ he says. ‘And I DON’T look after monkeys!’ He walks away and all the other animals follow their leader. When he arrives home, his wife is waiting for him. She is worried. ‘One of our babies is sick,’ she says. ‘I don’t know what to do.’ The lion looks at his children. Then he tells his wife about his visit to the Doctor. Hundreds and thousands of monkeys are sick. There’s a lot of work for John Dolittle to do.
First he vaccinates• all the monkeys that are not sick. After that he puts all the sick monkeys together.

‘Silly lion!’ she says. ‘Everyone is talking about this wonderful man. They say he can cure every sickness. And just when we have a sick baby in the house, you are rude to him! Go and tell him you are sorry immediately! And take the other animals with you. Do what the Doctor says. Then ask him politely• to come and look at our baby. Hurry!’
So the leader of the lions goes back to the Doctor.‘It isn’t easy to find help these days, Doctor Dolittle,’ the lion
says. ‘But you have a big problem here. We want to help you. Tell us what to do. And, if you have a minute later, Doctor, can you come and look at my son? He’s sick.’
The lion talks to all the animals in the jungle and they come and help, too. The Doctor is very happy. Now there are so many animals that he has to send some away. Some of the animals are very good nurses and soon the monkeys start to get better.
Two weeks later all the monkeys are well again. The Doctor is very tired and he sleeps for three days.
When he wakes up he says, ‘Now I can go back to Puddleby.’ The monkeys are surprised. ‘Why must the good Doctor go away?’ they ask Chee-Chee.
‘Isn’t he happy here?’ ‘He owes• a sailor some money,’ says Chee-Chee.‘What is money?’ ask the monkeys.‘In the Doctor’s land people can’t have anything without
money,’ explains Chee-Chee. ‘Money is very important.’

‘Why does the Doctor owe the sailor money?’ a small monkey asks.
Then Chee-Chee tells them about the storm and the sailor’s boat.
‘It’s at the bottom of the sea now,’ he says. ‘He’s a poor man so the Doctor wants to buy another one for him.’
The monkeys are quiet for a long time. They are thinking. Then the leader of the monkey says, ‘We’re very grateful• to the Doctor for his help. We must give him a present before he goes.’
‘Yes! Yes!’ shout all the other monkeys. ‘A very good present!’‘Fifty bags of coconuts•!’ shouts one.‘A hundred bags of bananas!’ shouts another.‘We have a long journey in front of us,’ Chee-Chee says. ‘And
bananas and coconuts are very heavy. If you want to give him a good present, give him an animal.’
The monkeys talk together for a few minutes, then one of them says, ‘Has the Doctor got a pushmi-pullyu?’

‘No,’ says Chee-Chee. ‘There aren’t any in the Doctor’s land. Give him one of those!’
The pushmi-pullyu is a very strange animal. It has two heads, one on each end of its body. It is very shy• and very difficult to catch. But the monkeys aren’t worried. They set off early the next morning to find one.
What is it Think of an animal. Write 2 or 3 sentences about
it but don’t write the name. Read your description to the class. Ask your classmates to guess the animal.
After walking many miles, they see some footprints• near a river. They follow them to a place where the grass is very high.
‘He’s in the grass!’ says one of the monkeys. ‘But how can we catch him?
‘Let’s make a ring around him!’ says another.‘Good idea!’ everyone says.They all hold hands and make a ring. When the pushmi-pullyu comes out of the grass, he can’t get
through the ring of monkeys. He sits down and looks at them.‘What do you want?’ he asks.‘We want you to go home with Doctor Dolittle,’ the monkeys
say. ‘Certainly not!’ replies the pushmi-pullyu.

‘The Doctor is a very kind man but he hasn’t got any money,’ the monkeys say. Then they tell him about the sailor and the boat. ‘In his land people pay to look at strange animals. If a lot of them pay to look at you, the Doctor can get rich•.’
‘But I’m too shy,’ says the pushmi-pullyu. The monkeys talk to him for three days. At the end of the
third day the pushmi-pullyu says, ‘Alright. But I want to meet the Doctor before I say “yes”.’
Doctor Dolittle is surprised when he sees the strange animal with two heads. ‘What is it?’ he asks.
‘It’s a pushmi-pullyu,’ say the monkeys. ‘Take him home with you. Ask people to give you money to look at him.’
‘But I don’t want any money,’ replies the Doctor.‘You DO!’ say Dab-Dab. ‘How can we buy a new boat for the
sailor without money? And what about food? We need money for that, too.’
‘Yes, perhaps you are right,’ says the Doctor. ‘Money IS a nuisance! But does the pushmi-pullyu want to leave Africa?’
‘Yes,’ says the pushmi-pullyu. He understands that the Doctor is a kind man. ‘But if I don’t like it there, you must send me back. Do you promise?’
‘Of course!’ replies Doctor Dolittle.Before the Doctor and his pets leave, the monkeys have a big
party for him. There are lots of good things to eat and drink. Then they carry his bags to the edge of their country.
‘Goodbye, Doctor,’ they say. ‘And thank you!’
