Lions Club to sponsor White Cane DayThe Kasson-Mantorville Lions Club will hold White Cane Day on Saturday, October 13th,
from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., in front of Erdman’s County Market, and in front of Casey’s inMantorville. The purpose is to raise money for the Lions Vision Foundation Sight Program, aswell as the Minnesota Eye Bank. White Cane Days is held to help to make the American peo-ple more aware of the meaning of the white cane and of the need for motorists to exercise spe-cial care for the blind person who carries it. On October 6th, 1964 the U.S. Congress approveda resolution authorizing the President of the U.S. to annually issue a proclamation designatingOctober 15th as White Cane Safety Day. The Lions Club have made vision their main focus.Back in 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become “knights of the blind”. This remainsthe main focus of Lion Clubs in 205 countries with over 1.3 million members. The K-M Lionsare proud to be part of Lions Club International, and provide needed services for this com-munity. Their motto is “We Serve.”HistoryIn 1921, James Biggs, a photographer from Bristol, England, became blind following an
accident. Because he was feeling uncomfortable with the amount of traffic around his home,he painted his walking stick white to be more easily visible.
In 1930, the late George A. Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club (Illinois) intro-duced the idea of using the white cane with a red band as a means of assisting the blind inindependent mobility. The Peoria Lions approved the idea, white canes were made and dis-tributed, and the Peoria City Council adopted an ordinance giving the bearers the right-of-wayto cross the street. News of the club’s activity spread quickly to other Lions clubs throughoutthe United States, and their visually handicapped friends experimented with the white canes.Overwhelming acceptance of the white cane idea by the blind and sighted alike quickly gavecane users a unique method of identifying their special need for travel consideration amongtheir sighted counterparts.
Also in 1931, in France, Guilly d’Herbemont recognized the danger to blind people in traf-fic and launched a national “white stick movement” for blind people. She donated 5,000 whitecanes to people in Paris.
Today white cane laws are on the books of every state in the US and many other countries, providing blind persons a legal status in traffic. The white cane now universally acknowledgesthat the bearer is blind. For specific information contact your local government office formotor vehicles.

Minnesota department of natural resources
Q: Although the loon is a bird, it differs from song-birds and waterfowl. How?
A: The bones of most birds are hollow and light in orderto maximize the efficiency of flight; loons, however, adaptedto life in the water, have several large solid bones that makediving easier but flying more difficult. This extra weightenables them to dive deep – in excess of 100 feet – to searchfor food. Once underwater, loons can remain there for sever-al minutes. Even though loons are capable of diving deepand for long periods, most dives are shallower and shorter.Because their bodies are heavy relative to their wing size, loons need a runway of 60 or more feet in order to take offfrom a lake. When airborne loons can fly more than 75 milesper hour. Another unique characteristic of a loon is its legs. These extremities are set far back on its body, which means aloon cannot walk like other birds. If on dry land, a loon mustpush itself along on its chest.

Navy Seaman Caleb M. Walters, son of Audrey Waltersof Dodge Center and Daryl Walters of Dodge Center, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at RecruitTraining Command, Great Lakes, Illinois with honors.
During the eight-week program, Walters completed avariety of training which included classroom study andpractical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations."This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence theyneed to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed togalvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedica-tion, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through thepractical application of basic Navy skills and the core valuesof Honor, Courage and Commitment. It’s distinctly "Navy"flavor was designed to take into account what it means to bea Sailor.
Walters is a 2011 graduate of Walters Academy of DodgeCenter, Minn.
Donald Johnsonwins KSB football contest
Larry Grimm and SaraEngelstad of Kasson andKasey and Jordyn Kreklingof Hayfield had only twowrong in the Kasson StateBank football contest. Thelast contest corrected wasthat of Donald Johnson ofKasson and he came throughwith only one wrong choiceto win the $15 prize thisweek.
The one game Johnsonmissed was the Green Bayloss at Indianapolis which isa game the other four contes-tants missed as well. In factSara Engelstad did not have awinner circled for that gameso it had to be considered awrong pick. The only othertough pick this week waspreviously unbeatenNorthwestern’s loss at PennState. There were no upsets atthe high school level and theother games in the pro rankswent as expected.
