GENOA – Last season, Sal Lopez started his Friday nights early, as one of the mainstays of a Genoa-Kingston sophomore team that went 6-2-1.

After he was sweaty and bruised from those four quarters, Lopez didn’t go into the locker room and head to the stands for the varsity contest. Instead, the Cogs junior fullback/defensive lineman went right back to the sidelines and usually played about half the game on the varsity level, and was one of a handful of G-K sophomores to get varsity experi-ence.

“I guess you’re a little winded,” Lopez said of his double-duty experience in 2011. “But you kind of get your pregame jitters [in the sophomore game]. So, it’s more of a positive thing.”

Lopez is just one of a number of talented juniors who will see heavy playing time for G-K in 2012. The class hopes to reverse last year’s unfortunate season, when the Cogs went 1-8 in Travis Frederick’s first season as head coach.

In 2011, sophomores such as Lopez were players who could have seen more time on varsity. However, players who play four quarters on the sophomore level are only allowed to play two quar-

ters in the varsity game.A group of sophomores that

had plenty of success stayed at the lower level, instead of playing full varsity games. Even though the group could have helped the Cogs’ varsity squad.

“It was really tough,” junior OL/DL Connor Bankson said. “Just watching that happen and knowing we could have done something else, but just not being able to.”

But there was a reason for that. Frederick wanted to keep the talented group together and not jeopardize the lower levels at all, knowing he had lowerclassmen with plenty of potential.

“I’ve seen teams where they pull up sophomores, they just go with it,” Frederick said. “I felt that I wanted those young guys to learn the system, and I insisted on not pulling them up full-time and taking those numbers away for the juniors and seniors.”

By keeping the core group of

sophomores together last season, Frederick allowed them to keep good chemistry going, and it paid off for the sophomores with their strong record.

This year, fans will see plenty from juniors such as Lopez, Bankson and running back Eli Thurlby.

Lopez said the chemistry between this year’s junior and senior classes at G-K has been good since middle school. Making an impact at G-K and having a long playoff run is some-

thing the current G-K upperclassmen have discussed frequently.

“We always talked about, since like eighth grade, them being seniors and us upcoming juniors, being the team that’s going to go really far and make a playoff run,” Lopez said. “So, we’re hoping to see that this season. Hopefully with the disappointment of last season ... we can use that to our advantage. Teams might look over us because of that.”

Todd Hallaron was hired in June to coach the DeKalb football team. The former assistant takes over for Marty Sanders, who resigned in May.

New coach plans to get Barbs back into postseason

By ANTHONY [email protected]

DeKALB – Todd Hallaron prides himself on being efficient.

Running an up-tempo practice is a priority for the new DeKalb football coach, and he likes to avoid long coach’s meetings when pos-sible.

But when asked about system-atic changes he would make this season, Hallaron took his time and thought about how he could answer the question without giving too much away.

“You’ll notice just some subtle differences,” Hallaron said, not offering much in the way of details.

“Our offensive base will be simi-lar.”

Hallaron was hired in June, and one of DeKalb’s advantages early in the season will be its element of surprise. The former assistant never has been a high school head coach before, and he’ll leave a lot the same.

But there will be some differenc-es that Hallaron isn’t quite ready to give away.

“There’s nothing huge,” junior quarterback Jack Sauter said. “Obviously with new coaches, there will be system changes, and we’re all doing our best to learn, but there is nothing too drastic.”

As a coach, Hallaron is mild-mannered, but keeping practice moving is important to him.

Sauter, the new projected starter this season, could tell Hallaron’s strengths as a head coach on Day 1.

“The tempo has increased, and there’s just more expectation over-all,” Sauter said. “There’s more

discipline. Really, the biggest thing is the tempo. We’re really trying to speed up practice, no walking up the field, and just trying to get more reps in during practice.”

Increased expectations aren’t new to DeKalb football.

Former coach Marty Sanders led the Barbs to the playoffs in 2010 for the first time in 21 seasons after his second season at the helm. Despite increased expectations and talk of going deep into the playoffs, the Barbs finished 4-5 last year, win-ning only one game in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.

Sanders resigned in May, citing personal reasons, weeks before summer workouts began.

“It was early enough where we could put in our base,” Hallaron said. “But it was still late enough where we couldn’t put in our entire offense. A couple of base formations and a couple of plays.”

Hallaron will continue to imple-ment new tenets of the offense before Galesburg visits for the season opener Friday.

But when the team lines up for its second season-opener at the school’s new stadium, it won’t be easy to tell differences between Hallaron’s sys-tem and Sanders’.

“From the outside looking in, there’s not a lot of changes,” Hallaron

said. “There’s a lot of stuff that we’ve done the last year or two years that’s very similar. I think, being that it’s a bit of a change from last year, we would like to make things as similar as possible so there’s some familiar-ity with the kids.”

Junior QB going to build off of last season’s spot duties

By JOHN [email protected]

SYCAMORE – It was Week 2 of the playoffs, and Ryan Bartels was sick – all week.

While Bartels would start and play in the Sycamore football team’s second-round playoff loss to Rochelle, then-sophomore Devin Mottet was the one who had to step in and take snaps during the week.

Someone had to get the offense ready for the Hubs. That responsi-bility fell to one of the handful of sophomores on the team. Mottet had seen a few snaps in backup duty, but his role as a sophomore was mainly as a receiver.

“It was a big deal,” Mottet recalled nine months later. “It was scary being a sophomore up on varsity. I had to take snaps for a three-year starter.

“But they called my name and I took the snaps. It was just seeing how they react to me. I’m the youngest guy out there and the senior linemen and backs have to listen to a sophomore tell them what to do. It was different.”

Mottet called it a good experi-ence, and one he’ll build off of as he steps into his first year as the Spartans’ starter at quarterback.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound signal-caller draws some comparisons to Bartels, who now plays at North Dakota. Knowing he would have some new responsibilities as a junior, Mottet spent plenty of time learning all he could from Bartels.

“I think he was in his hip pocket all the time and learned a lot,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “What was good about Ryan

was, Ryan wants to teach. I know [Mottet is] just a junior, but he’s a pretty seasoned junior. He’s got a ways to go, but he learned from a pretty good quarterback.”

Mottet said composure is one of the biggest lessons he’s learned over the past year. The junior said he used be hot-headed, and found himself easily frustrated. Watch-ing and learning from Bartels and the approach to the game from last year’s seniors helped, Mottet added.

After a summer of throwing with teammates in 7-on-7s and on their own, Mottet says he believes he’s earned their trust, which has allowed him to relax and lead.

“If you come in the huddle look-ing depressed, they’re not going to want to play or they’re going to re-act off you,” Mottet said. “So you’ve got to come in and encourage them, get them ready to go.

In addition to the mental aspects of the game, Ryan said Mottet’s physical attributes have

improved, and not just in the weight room.

“He’s improved his feet, that’s an area he continues to have to improve, but there’s been some really good improvement with that,” Ryan said. “His leadership skills are really com-

ing.”And with it, a chance for Mottet to

make a name for himself in Sycamore football history.

“He is a great player, captain and everything,” Mottet said. “But, yeah, I want to make a new legacy.”

92012 PREP FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

GENOA-KINGSTON COGSCoach: Travis Frederick (1-8, second season at G-K)2011 record: 1-8 (0-5 Big Northern East)Outlook: After two straight playoff appearances,

the Cogs took a nosedive in Frederick’s first season. In 2012, G-K hopes a strong junior class and improved skill position play with players such as running back Eli Thurlby, fullback Sal Lopez and receiver Gabe Wil-liams will help reverse the course. Williams moves to wideout after he was G-K’s leading rusher (334 yards) a season ago.

The Cogs will play their second season in the BNC East, and avoid West Division powers Oregon and Still-man Valley in the crossover contests.

Key offensive players: Sal Lopez, FB, Jr.; Adam Price, QB, Sr.; Gabe Williams, WR, Sr.; Eli Thurlby, RB, Jr.; Tim Benvenuti, WR, Sr.; Ben Rabe, OL, Sr.

Key defensive players: Connor Bankson, DL, Jr.; Sal Lopez, DL, Jr.; Logan Bankson, LB, Sr.; Ben Rabe, LB, Sr.; Eli Thurlby, S, Jr.

Frederick’s take: “We have a nice, solid front seven, front eight there on our defense that I think we can lean on to slow down the run there. It’s a running league that we’re in. Not a lot of passing going on.”

Our prediction: 4-5, 2-4 BNC East– Steve Nitz, [email protected]

DeKALB BARBS

Coach: Todd Hallaron (first season)2011 record: 4-5 (1-4 Northern Illinois Big 12 East)Outlook: If the Barbs want to make the playoffs for

the second time in three years, they probably will have to have an improved out-of-conference record. Last season, the Barbs’ only win in the NI Big 12 came against Yorkville, and another must-win in the regular-season finale against Rochelle might be an undesirable scenario after last season’s 42-13 loss.

Expect a big year from sophomore running back Dre Brown, who already has Division I colleges across the country looking at him. Brown rushed for 179 yards against Sycamore in the third game of his freshman season, but he broke his collarbone in the game, which kept him out for the remainder of the season.

Hallaron said new quarterback Jack Sauter is very simi-

lar to Brian Sisler, the Barbs’ athletic quarterback who graduated last year. Seniors Joe Diedrich and Jake Smith will anchor both the offensive and defensive lines. Hal-laron said he doesn’t expect to make wholesale changes from former coach Marty Sanders’ team.

Key offensive players: Jack Sauter, QB, Jr.; Dre Brown, RB, Soph.; Jake Carpenter, WR, Sr.; Drew Paszotta, WR, Jr.

Key defensive players: Ryan Metzker, LB, Sr.; Joe Diedrich, OL, Sr.; Dylan Hottsmith, DB, Jr.; Jimmy Russell, DB, Sr.; Jake Smith, DL, Sr.

Hallaron’s take: “I don’t want to have wholesale changes, just minor changes here and there and put kids in the best position to succeed and have at it. I’m excited the season has finally started.”

KANELAND KNIGHTSCoach: Tom Fedderly (39-16, sixth season at

Kaneland)2011 record: 12-1, 5-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 Confer-

ence East Division champions; lost to Montini, 35-31, in Class 5A semifinals

Outlook: Last season was a new year, a new quarter-back and the same result for the Knights. A conference championship and a berth in the state semifinals before losing to Montini. With Daily Chronicle Player of the Year Drew David back at quarterback for the Knights alongside running back Jesse Balluff, the state semifi-nals are the hurdle Kaneland hopes to clear this season.

The Knights lose all-everything receiver and return man Quinn Buschbacher, but the emergence of Zach Martinelli will at least help offset Buschbacher’s ab-sence. The Knights installed all of their passing game during summer 7-on-7s, and David will be a bigger part of the running game after he added 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason.

Defensively, Lawrence and Bradford will be the focal points on the field for the Knights. Look for the senior duo to be the ones calling signals for what shapes up as a stingy defense.

Key offensive players: Drew David, QB, Jr.; Jesse Balluff, RB, Jr.; Alex Snyder, OL, Sr.; Zach Martinelli, WR, Sr.; Matt Rodriguez, K, Jr.

Key defensive players: Ryan Lawrence, LB, Sr.; Blake Bradford, LB, Sr., Kory Harner, S, Sr.

Fedderly’s take: “I feel like we’re way ahead of what we were last year because we had so many young guys on the team last year. So we didn’t have to start from scratch like we did last year.”

Coach: Joe Ryan (43-37, ninth season at Sycamore)2011 record: 7-4, 3-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 Confer-

ence; lost in second round of Class 5A playoffs, 21-16, to Rochelle

Outlook: The Spartans know what they’ve lost, but Sycamore feels confident about what’s returned, namely a bunch of speedy skill position players. Led by senior running back Austin Culton, the area’s leading rusher in 2011 with 1,235 yards and 20 touchdowns and junior wideout Ben Niemann, last year’s third-leading receiver in the area with 725 yards, the Spartans return plenty of firepower in the rushing and passing attack.

With speed comes flexibility, and Sycamore is capable of making defenses think a little more this season. The key will be junior quarterback Devin Mottet, who saw time in limited action a year ago. Scheduled to be a first-time starter on the varsity level, Mottet will have to

prove himself on Friday nights. On defense, Sycamore has to improve on stopping the

run. Running backs feasted on Sycamore’s defense last season, a trend that can’t continue if the Spartans hope to reach the playoffs for a fourth straight season.

Key offensive players: Austin Culton, RB, Sr.; Devin Mottet, QB, Jr.; Ben Niemann, WR, Jr.; David Compher, WR, Sr.; Martin Malone, OG, Sr.

Key defensive players: Jake Davis, DL, Sr.; Brett Weaver, LB, Soph.; Michael Stinnett, S, Jr.; Logan Sch-neider, LB, Jr.

Ryan’s take: “We have really good team speed. I’m re-ally impressed by how our kids are moving. That’s a plus. I think everything else is going to be wait-and-see, but when you can start with speed, then that helps.”

Our prediction: 6-3, 3-2 NI Big 12– John Sahly, [email protected]

HIAWATHA HAWKS

Coach: Sean Donnelly (14-40, seventh season)2011 record: 0-9 (0-9 Northeastern Athletic Confer-

ence)Outlook: The Hawks look to break a 12-game losing

streak after the team went winless in 2011. Despite that, Donnelly and the players continue to stay opti-mistic on the upcoming season.

Donnelly is given a small team of about 30 players to work with but seems confident in the depth at run-ning back, fullback and quarterback. He still is somewhat concerned with the depth of the rest of the team’s roster after a rash of injuries last season. Hiawatha lost three seniors from last season, and continues to build on a group of juniors and seniors.

One of the injuries from last year included senior receiver Derek Ross, who sat out his junior year with a knee injury. Along with the return of Ross, the Hawks welcome back linebacker Dakotah Quimby, who sat out a good portion of last season with an injury. Quimby will make most of the calls on defense.

Key offensive players: Kyle Nelson, RB, Sr.; Mike Mercado, QB, Jr.; Derek Ross, WR, Sr.

Key defensive players: Shannon Davis, DL, Jr.; Allen Letterrer, DE, Soph.

Donnelly’s take: “Last year was a difficult year. Between having a lack of seniors on the team and after Week 2 we dealt with the injury bug big time, it was tough at times just because we were looking on our sidelines and saw that we were running out of players. To be honest, it was a relief for the younger guys on the team because it seemed that at every corner there was something else negative happening and we weren’t catching breaks, and now we’re looking forward to this year a little more.”

MAPLE PARK – Blake Bradford first noticed it this summer in Pontiac.

At Kaneland’s first 7-on-7 tourna-ment of the summer, the senior line-backer realized the role he enjoyed last season with fellow senior Ryan Lawrence had some new facets to it. What they knew, the knowledge they gained in becoming honorable mention all-Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference and Daily Chronicle all-area honorable mention line-backers for a state semifinal team, had to be shared with Kaneland’s first-time varsity players.

“Pontiac was our first game-speed type of situation, where we had to adjust and get a good feel for what we’re actually doing,” Bradford said.

Not only that, but they had to tell

their younger and inexperienced teammates what to do and where to go. A new role, one they had to adapt to.

“We try to be (vocal) as much as we can,” Bradford said. “We’re try-ing to force it more and more, just because we know what we’re doing, more than everybody under us.”

The duo got there quickly, and even junior quarterback Drew David took notice.

“They’re pretty vocal, but at the same time, they back it up with their play,” David said. “People un-derstand that. Whenever they have something to say, everyone listens to them.”

Kaneland coach Tom Fedderly called Lawrence and Bradford two of the Knights’ smartest defensive players.

With linebacker Sean Carter, nose tackle Ben Kovalick and defen-

sive back Jake Razo all graduated, Bradford and Lawrence will need every bit of that football IQ to lead Kaneland’s defense this season if the Knights hope to advance over the state semifinal hump that has kept them from a berth in Cham-paign each of the past two seasons.

“We always say that our smart-est kids are our best football play-ers,” Fedderly said. “They under-stand what they’ve got to do, but they understand what everyone’s doing, all of the different schemes that are going on. That helps a lot.”

Lawrence says he’s made his biggest strides in pass coverage, un-derstanding the different schemes and aerial attacks teams will throw at the Knights. It’s that knowl-edge he wants to pass along to his younger teammates.

“I know going into last summer, it was hard to even cover a guy man-to-man,” Lawrence said. “But now it

feels natural.“Then again, everyone’s getting

bigger, so is every other team.”Though maybe not as big as Law-

rence first noticed when he started go-ing to Kaneland games as a kid. A new

season and new responsibilities, but not a new atmosphere for the senior.

“I’ve looked forward to this since I was a little guy,” Lawrence said, “watching football up there in the stands.”

DE/TE ‘a big surprise’ for Hawks last year

By JESSICA CRAWFORD [email protected]

KIRKLAND – Defensive end/tight end Allen Letterer has spent the past nine months getting better, faster and stronger.

As a freshman and a new face on the varsity Hiawatha football team, Letterer experienced the worst-case scenario; a winless season. Now as a sophomore, he knows there is nothing he and the team can do but get better. He also knows he won’t sneak up on anyone, and that he has new responsibilities in a new year.

“I’ve improved a lot since last year,” Letterer said, “I’ve put in

a lot of time in the weight room, but the thing I really have been working on that I lacked last year was speed. I feel like I didn’t turn the corner to get to the quarterback fast enough, but this year I feel like I have a lot more of that now and a lot more strength.”

Letterer has spent the offseason at camps and workouts with the team, but also has trained on his own in the weight room and runs long distances and sprints around his neighborhood.

Letterer ended his first var-sity season with 24 solo tackles, 43 assisted tackles, 13 tackles for loss and five sacks on defense in nine games. The 6-foot, 190-pound defensive end was awarded all-Northeastern Athletic Conference honorable mention as a freshman.

“He was a big surprise for us last year,” Hiawatha coach Sean Don-nelly said. “The kid has done noth-ing but just greatly improve this entire offseason. He’s faster, he’s

stronger and I think football-wise he’s smarter with what we want him to do. We’re throwing a lot on him as a sophomore, but we’re try-ing to make sure he’s in situations where he will be very successful.”

Letterer said he has put in a lot of work in the offseason for not just the defensive end position, but also the tight end position, as well. In 2011, he had three receptions for 28 yards.

Now that Letterer has a year of varsity football under his belt, he helps out the new varsity players who do not know what to expect.

“I try to motivate people and try to help them push through on the field, off the field and in school, I just try to help them out,” Letterer said, “I’m looking forward to the season. We have a lot of new guys that should do a lot and I think are worth watching, but it’s all the mat-ter of time and work we put in.”

On Aug. 8, the first day of high school two-a-days, Letterer stood tall and confident on the upcoming sea-

son that kicks off Friday at Marquette in Ottawa, a new addition to the Northeastern Athletic Conference.

The game against Marquette will be a test for Letterer and the Hawks when they try to break their current 12-game losing streak.

“We have to get a good rhythm go-ing,” Letterer said. “It’s all about the first win, because once you win one you have the confidence, and we’re lacking that right now. But once we get confidence, I feel that it will be a lot easier to win games.”
