    WEEK1(AUG.29-30)Go here:HASLETT at EAST LANSING

This ones been a staple of opening-weekaction since the two schools began playingregularly in 2002. The Trojans lately have hadthe upper hand, winning three straight in-cluding a 37-18 victory last year. A win here forEast Lansing would match the four straightthe Vikings won from 2004-07.

If you want to see a gamebetween two old

    CAC schools: WAVERLY at EVERETT

The Vikings and Warriors have faced oneanother in the non-conference in all but twoseasons since 2002. Waverly is coming offback-to-back winning seasons while Everettwill still be strong, albeit re-tooling a bit, afteran undefeated regular season last year. Everetthas won seven of the past eight in this series.

WEEK2 (SEPT.6-7)Go here:PORTLAND at OWOSSO Owos-so has been a rising program the past twoseasons, making the playoffs last year for thefirst time since 2001. Portland won the Division5 state title last season and will have to focuson this opponent from the CAAC Red before aCAAC White showdown with Lansing Catholicthe following week.

If you want to see a good early CMACtilt:

FOWLER at LAINGSBURG Fowler andnew coach Kris Ernst open the season at statepower Mendon. Then another road trip loomsat Laingsburg in the second week. This is the

start of a huge conference stretch for theWolfpack as they play the Eagles at home, then travel to Pewamo-Westphalia and Fultonthe following two weeks.

    WEEK 3 (SEPT.12-14)Go here:PORTLAND at LANSING

CATHOLIC A game that will most likelydecide the CAAC White, as it has the past twoyears. The Cougars won 41-32 last season, butthe Raiders won the state championship. Thewinner of this game has gone on to post anunbeaten record in CAAC White play everyseason since 2007. The offensive schemes are

vastly different, but they both can light up thescoreboard.

If you want to see CAACBlue play get

    going instead:GRAND LEDGE at SEXTON

The Big Reds should be one of the moreimproved teams in the area after being soyoung last season. Sexton has scored just eightpoints combined in two games against GrandLedge since coming into the Blue, and lost by27 last season.

WEEK 4 (SEPT.20-21)Gohere: HOLTat EVERETT The CAACBlue race started to become a little clearer

during this game last season, when the Vikingsused a smothering defense to post a 21-3 roadwin. It was the first time Everett had beatenHolt since 2004. The Rams will be looking for alittle road redemption this time.

If youre looking for a nail-biter:OWOSSO

at HASLETT Since both these schools

started play in the Red, theyve split twogames decided by three points each. TheVikings have just missed the playoffs the pastfour seasons and games like these may helpthem get over the hump.

WEEK5 (SEPT.27-28)Gohere: HOLTat EAST LANSING Holtdealt East Lansing its first loss of the seasonlast year and it was the first of three setbacksin four games for the Trojans. Both teams

ended up 4-3 in conference play. Scoring is ata premium when these two hook up. Theyhave combined for more than 40 points justonce since 2006.

If youre looking for a grudge match:

OWOSSO at ST. JOHNS Owossos re-surgent season ended at the hands of theRedwings last year in a Division 3 district final, less than two months after St. Johns won 14-13in a regular-season meeting. These two teamslove to run the football.

    WEEK6 (OCT.4-5)Go here:ST.JOHNSat DEWITT This

game is always fun (almost 70 combinedpoints per game the last four meetings) andusually competitive (last four decided by twotouchdowns or less). The Redwings lookedpoised to end DeWitts season in a Division 3regional final last year, but botched a close-range field goal attempt in the final minute

    and fell 29-27.

If youre looking to follow the CAAC Blue

for another week:EVERETT at EAST LAN-

SINGThe Trojans got the last laugh againstEverett last season, losing 6-0 in the regularseason and then eliminating Everett in a Divi-sion 2 district opener, after the Vikings wentthrough the regular season undefeated. Forthe fifth year in a row, East Lansing plays Holtand Everett back-to-back weeks.

    WEEK7 (OCT.11-12)Go here:FOWLER at PEWAMO-WEST-

PHALIA Both programs have new coachesand will be replacing some key departures, butboth should still be battling for a league titlein this one. The Eagles shut out P-W 14-0 lastfall and these two schools have finished in thetop three of the league the past three years.

If youre looking for something a little

    different:PORTLAND ST. PATRICK at

WEBBERVILLE The first 8-player footballgame between two area schools. This is Web-bervilles first season playing the 8-player

format and the Shamrocks, former longtimemembers of the CMAC, went 11-1 last year andreached the semifinals of the 8-player playoffsbefore losing to Deckerville.

WEEK8 (OCT.18-19)Go here:PORTLAND at DEWITT Twoplayoff-proven teams that could have bigger

games ahead when they go their separateways following this underrated CAAC cross-over. The Raiders announced themselves in a37-7 demolition of DeWitt last season, forcingeight Panther turnovers. Theyve split the lastfour matchups, with Portland taking the pasttwo.

If youre looking for a city showdown:

SEXTONat EVERETT This game shouldbe much closer than last year a 32-0 Everett

win which ended a three-game winning streakin the series for the Big Reds. The victorycountered a 32-point Sexton win in 2011.

WEEK9 (OCT.25-26)Go here:ITHACA at SHEPHERD Yes, itsa long drive and the weather in late October istotally unreliable, but the Yellowjackets couldbe on the verge of their fourth consecutiveperfect regular season and 51st win in a row ifthey make it unscathed into this one. Impres-sive stuff.

If youre looking to stay closer to home:

GRAND LEDGE at HOLTHolt was look-

ing for a sixth win in this regular-season finalelast year to clinch a playoff spot, but it woundup being a 27-0 defeat. Grand Ledge has wonfour of the past five in the series, allowing justeight points per game in their past threevictories.

    Denny Schwarze

Holt quarterback Eric Potter (left) gets past Grand Ledges Devante Dear, Marquinzus Adams (5) and Jacob Quain (top right) during theComets win last season. The two teams will meet in the regular-season finale again this season. LSJ FILE

    A WIDE NET

The Trojans biggest offensiveweapon last season was widereceiver Javon Haines. His gradua-tion leaves a gaping hole. Ratherthan replace him with just oneplayer, expect several to step up.Ken Washington, Zach Franciscoand Blake Ross should all bereceiving targets. The deep andtalented group should be one ofthis teams strengths.

    TAKING A PASS

While the Trojans have a fewreplacements for Haines, findingsomeone to take over for JakePendred at quarterback figures tobe a little bit tougher. East Lan-sing has two quarterbacks on itsrosterGabe Horton-Pankowand Reece Piotter. Whoever getsthe majority of snaps will need toprogress quickly for the team tomirror its playoff run from lastseason.

    GETTING DEFENSIVE

With seven returning starters ondefense, this squad will be one ofthe most experienced units in theconference. Most of that return-ing talent is up front and in thesecondary. Leading the way in thetrenches will be senior Matt Eth-ington, who was honorable men-tion all-conference in 2012. Sup-porting him in the secondary isall-conference standout DevinParitee.

    NO SURPRISES

Perhaps the biggest shock of the2012 postseason was East Lan-sings 10-6 victory over Everett inthe first round. With the Vikingsout for revenge and the rest ofthe league improving, the Trojanswont be sneaking up on anybodyin 2013. They will need to startstrong, too, as two of their finalthree games are on the roadagainst Grand Ledge and Sexton.

    RUSHING AROUND

The return of 5-foot-8, 185-pound junior E.J. Jackson andthe addition of sophomore

running backs ShonquiseTrainor (5-9, 170) and LaToneSmith (5-9,190) should makethe rushing attack one of thestrengths of the Easternfootball team. They haveexperience, and theyve put ina lot of work over the sum-mer, Quakers coach RobertMcBride said.

    IMPROVED DEFENSE

    The Quakers gave up 33, 38,33, 39, 54, 56, 9, 23 and 26

points, respectively, in theirnine games last fall for anaverage of 34.6 per game. That total should go downsince McBride thinks thedefensive line with Joe Gil-more, Josh Alston and JonNyembrue will be a teamstrength. He expects a smart, aggressive defense.

    NEW FOE: HASLETT

The Quakers schedule in-cludes eight of the sameopponents as a year ago. The

one change is state powerLowell was replaced by acloser rival, but one thats stillquite tough year in and yearout, in Haslett.

McBride wants to see Easternplay a complete game andlimit turnovers and penalties.

    FOURCASTBEST SEASONEVER?

The Vikings are coming off, argu-ably, their most successful seasonever. Everett went 9-0 in theregular season and earned its firstCAAC Blue title before losing itsplayoff opener, 10-6 to East Lan-sing. The only Vikings team to goundefeated was the 1954 teamthat went 8-0. The other teamthat absorbed just one loss wasthe 1955 team that went 7-1.

    COACH LOOKS AHEAD

Everett coach Marcelle Carruthers, whose career record improved to56-68 (or 50-47 since a 6-21start),told his team on the first day ofpractice earlier this month thatthe 2012 team set the bar highlast year for these young men,and some of these guys were partof that team. They see that every-thing matters, that every littletask you take on can help youbecome a become a completeplayer.

    FOURTH-YEAR QB

The Vikings return seven starterson offense, including fourth-yearstarting quarterback Lucas Barner.

Were fortunate to have ourquarterback back, Carrutherssaid. Hes been an outstandingleader. After an 0-9 freshmanyear, Everett improved to 4-5 hissophomore year and then 9-1 his

junior year. Defense, where Ever-ett returns just one starter, and

the lines on both sides of the ballare concerns for Carruthers.

    DARK DAYS ARE BEHIND

Given the success of last season, its sort of hard to believe thatEverett once went 0-9 for fourstraight years from 1995-98. Forthe decade of 1993-2002, theVikings record was just 12-78. Butrecent success under Carruthershas led to greater participation.More than 40 players showed upfor the first day of football prac-tice, plus another 25 each for the

junior varsity and freshmen teamsat Everett.

    FOURCAST

    ALMOST A REPEAT

If the Comets could have keptEverett from converting a two-point conversion that gave theVikings a 22-21 win last season,Grand Ledge would have earneda third straight CAAC Blue titleand a fourth in five years. TheComets shared the 2011 leaguetitle with Holt, East Lansing andSexton. And only a 34-27 loss toHolt in 2009 kept Grand Ledgefrom going 6-0 each year from2008-10. So Bird has led GrandLedge to an outstanding 28-4

mark in the CAAC Blue the pastfive years.

    PLAYOFF STREAK ONGOING

Since absorbing more than half ofhis career coaching losses with 3-6records in 2006 and 2007, Bird hasguided the Comets into the play-offs each season since with rec-ords of 10-1, 7-3, 9-1, 8-3 and 7-3for a 41-11total. A six th straightplayoff season would be secondonly at Grand Ledge to formercoach Pat OKeefes run of sevenstraight from 1994-2000 (cappedby Grand Ledges state title).

A LOT GOES, A LOT RETURNS

The Comets suffered heavy lossesto graduation, and then had twomultiple-year starters transfer:running back/defensive backMarq Adams to East Lansing andquarterback Jalen Brady to South-field. Yet those who return in-clude all-league linebacker Jona-than Dobie and a pair of three-year starters: all-state runningback (and defensive back) JoeReverman and all-league freesafety (and wide receiver) KeeferJohnson.

    FAST TRACK

Grand Ledge adds three track andfield stars to its roster. Sophomorerunning back/defensive lineman BaBlamo was runner-up in the 100dash and wide receiver/defensiveback Stefan Jones was part of thewinning 4x200 relay as well as sev-enth in the 200 dash at the GreaterLansing Honor Roll Meet. Quarter-back/linebacker Nathan Meggeearned all-state in the 800 run at theDivision1 meet. Megge returns tofootball after trying cross countrylast fallwhere he finished runner-up in the CAAC Blue.

    Dick Hoekstra

Returning running back Tyler Vincent, now a senior, looks for an opening against CAACBlue rival Holt last year. LSJ FILE

    FOURCAST

    FEEL THE RUSH

Senior running back Ty Glover returns afterrushing for1,200 yards last year and 1,300 as asophomore and is one of the most experi-enced backs in the area. And just as important-ly, there is good depth behind him. Tim Cain,Tyler Todd and Trent Stone also will get looksin the backfield. Quarterback Eric Potter also isa threat to run.

    VALUABLE ASSET

Slamer called Austin Kent the quarterback ofthe defense and the senior will lead thesecondary. Kent is also a standout wide receiv-er and a big target at 6-0, 200 pounds, which isgood size for red-zone passing opportunities.Kent doesnt get any rest on special teamseither, returning kicks and punts for the Rams. For an offense that struggled to score at times

last season (just over14 points per game, shutout twice), Kent should be a big-time weapon.

    LINE DEPTH

Slamer feels depth on the offensive and defen-sive lines is one of the Rams biggest strengths.Senior Josh Marsh will anchor the offensiveline as a three-year starter. Andy Adado, VinceRawlings and Derek Wright also are returningoffensive linemen that all weigh more than220 pounds, with Marsh and Adado bothchecking in at 260. Its an experienced bunchthat should help pave the way for another bigseason for Glover. Seniors Colin Jones andDakota Lawhon (6-0, 310 pounds) return onthe defensive line and several other contrib-utors will be able to rotate in to help keep theunit fresh.

    TOUGH SLATE

On top of competing in the tough CAAC Blue,Holt will once again play one of the toughestnon-conference schedules in the state. TheRams face Hudsonville and Rockford in theirfirst two games for the third season in a row.Last year, Holt beat Hudsonville 24-21 and lostto Rockford 22-0.

    DennySchwarze

Ty Glover eludes Rockfords Blake McDonald during their game last season. Glover hasmore than 2,500 yards rushing in the past two seasons combined. LSJ FILE

    RETURN MEN

The Chiefs bring back15 of their 22 startersfrom last season. Although the team won justtwo games in 2012, having that much experi-ence bodes well for a turnaround. The return-

ing group includes the majority of the line-backer core and the defensive backs. Now thatthese players have been in Jack Wallacessystem for multiple seasons, expect an im-provement.

    QB BATTLE

The quarterback situation at Okemos is one towatch. Juniors Grant Klaver and Mitch Kacz-marek figure to get the majority of the snaps, but senior Darius Morris could work his wayinto the mix. With receivers Chad Major andChristian Moore back, there are people tothrow to, and its a matter of getting the right

    player under center.GROWING PAINS

It wasnt easy for Okemos in the first seasonunder Wallace in 2012. The Chiefs won justtwo games, including several lopsided scores. But Wallace has a history of success at Fow-lerville and compiled a career record of 190-99there. Okemos is seeking its first league titlesince1998, and while the school may not beready to contend this year, its heading in theright direction.

    LOADED SCHEDULE

As a member of the CAAC Blue, Okemos playsone of the toughest conference schedules youwill find. The Chiefs have to make trips toGrand Ledge and East Lansing, while homegames against Mason, Everett and Holt figureto be tough. If Okemos can win more than thetwo games it did last season, it will be a solidaccomplishment due to the strength of sched-ule.

    PLAYOFF REGULARS

A 42-41loss to Monroe in the second game oflast season wound up costing Sexton a playoffspot for the first time since 2006. It alsomarked just the second time the team missedthe postseason since Big Reds coach Dan Bog-gan took one of his squads to the playoffs forthe first time in 2004. That came after each ofhis first two teams at Sexton finshed with 4-5records.

    TEAM STRENGTHS

Boggan thinks the team speed of this yearssquad will be improved because of off-seasonwork. He says his players enjoy playing to-gether, and they spend a lot of time off thefield together. Other than team chemistry,Boggan thinks stronger leadershp will lead toimprovement on the field.

    FUTURE 4-YEAR STARTING QB?

Crosstown rival Everett is being led this fall bya fourth-year starting quarerback in LucasBarner. Sexton may be halfway on its way tothe same thing. Malick Mack took over thequarterback duties as a freshman last season, and then he served as point guard on the BigReds boys basketball team that won a Class Bdistrict title and made a regional final. Sextonfans are hoping Mack can lead his team towhere Barner led the Vikings last year aCAAC Blue title. The Big Reds were part of afour-way tie for the league title in 2011, butthey finished in a third-place tie with Holt andEast Lansing behind Everett and Grand Ledgelast fall.

    COACHS GOALS

Boggan wants to see his team compete hardand maintain our Sexton tradition of win-ning. He wants to see the Big Reds becomea great running team as we are accustomedto and finish all games at a high level onoffense and defense.

    GREAT RETURNS

Nine starters return on offense and eight comeback on defense for DeWitt and there is talenteverywhere. The Panthers started six sophomoresin the Division 3 semifinals and were rotating infreshmen on the defensive line. To make it thatfar with that much inexperience is impressive andDeWitt should be primed for another deep runthis time around.

    THE PROSPECT

Jake Johnson is one of the top quarterbacks inthe state, regardless of class, and is attractingattention from Division1 schools at the collegelevel. Johnson, who was hurt early last year anddid not return until late in the season, will haveplenty of weapons to work with in an ever-dangerous DeWitt offense. Despite the loss of LSJDream Team receiver Ryan Anderson, three-year

senior receiver Chris Ruby is back as well as fel-low senior receiver Justice Shankel, who had aproductive junior year. Senior running back JohnLippert is a deceptively strong ball carrier andwill be running in front of a line with four re-turning starters who are all over 230 pounds.Senior Chris Bukoski highlights the group, stand-ing 6-5 and weighing 275 pounds.

    WHATS BACK AT LINEBACKER

Gone are LSJ Dream Team linebacker JimmieMelton (172 tackles, Division 3-4 all-state specialmention) and Class A all-area hybrid Noah Evans, but DeWitt will still be strong at the linebackerspot. Junior Connor Grice is the teams strongest

player, squatting 520 pounds. Senior Zack Deak isa team captain and had a tremendous offseasonfor the Panthers.

    BIGLEG

Cameron West enters his senior season at place-kicker after making the Dream Team as a junior. He was 5 for 8 last season, with three makescoming from 40 yards or longer and a long of 43.He had three game-winning field goals andboomed 26 kickoffs for touchbacks. West entershis third year as the starter and will be in conten-tion for all-state and LSJ Dream Team honorsonce again.

    NOWHERETO GO BUT UP

Its been a rough two seasons forBrett Shrader since he took overat Fowlerville, as his team is just3-15. This is a school that hasshown it can have success, though, as under former coachJack Wallace it made the postsea-son 15 times from 1993-2010.Focus on team unity and funda-

mentals are how Fowlerville plansto get back to where it once was.

    FINISHING GAMES

The Gladiators were 1-8 last sea-son but lost five those games byseven points or less. It shows thatwith a few breaks and key playsat the right times, Fowlerville hadthe talent to make a run at thepostseason. Making those breakshappen and coming through atkey moments is a focus for the

    2013 squad.

    STARTING UP FRONT

While LSJ male athlete of the yearAdam Coon has graduated, theGladiators still boast some size upfront. Senior tackle Wyatt El-zerman checks in at 6-foot-5, 300pounds, while senior center MattInman is 6-foot, 275 pounds. Theyshould make plenty of holes for

    junior tailback Mason Litz.

    FRESH FACES

After being a senior-heavy teamin 2012, the Gladiators return justseven starters in 2013. With Litz asone of those returnees, expectthis team to pound the ball be-hind its big offensive line. Litz isalso a force on the defensive side, where he and Jake Kollek teamup to make a strong duo in the

    RILED UP

After playing in the shadow of ConorBrewer last season, senior Graham Rileywill be the go-to back for the Vikings this

season. An all-league selection last year,Riley figures to be the focal point of theoffense. He wont be the only one to getcarries, though. Seniors Cody Bosma andBilly Haskins, along with junior TraceWoodworth, figure to get their share oftouches.

    ON THE LINE

Although the team lost standout linemenSam Rathbun and Derek Smith, there willstill be a formidable crew up front. All-league selections Connor Wilson andGriffin Fox will be leading the way in thetrenches. Theres a reason this team hasbeen so effective at running the ball inrecent years, and it all starts with the bigbodies up front.

    RISE TO THE OCCASION

Perhaps the biggest issue for Haslett lastseason was getting defensive stops whenit mattered. The Vikings gave up at least20 points in all but one game. The team isspecifically looking for its defensive backsto step up this year, since senior JacobTaylor is the only returning starter on theunit. Sophomores Brandon Allen and JakeTahaney figure to get a chance to lockdown bigger roles.

    SUPPORT SYSTEM

The Vikings are known for their runninggame, but the team could become agreater threat if it can find a quarterbackto keep the defense guessing. Senior BryceDickman will get his shot at leading theteam. Although there are no wide receiv-ers listed on the roster, Dickmans ability torun and find his tight ends and runningbacks out of the backfield will be key forHaslett.

    VETERAN LINEUP

After a six-year run of losing seasons, the Bulldogs haveexperience on both sides of the ball. The four returningstarters on offense and three on defense took theirlumps last year as sophomores on the varsity, and Ioniahad its best season since 2008. Running back Kyle Parksand quarterback Austin Gregory earned all-leaguefirst-team and honorable mention, respectively, afterstarting all nine games as sophomores.

    BULLDOGS IN THE TRENCHES

Both sides of the line should be a strength for Ionia. Lefttackle Jon Klumpp and left guard Eric Spohr are boththree-year starters at their positions, with Klumpp alsostarting for three seasons on the D-line.

    ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Coach Mike Holes hopes that improved technique willlead to more wins this year. Our mistakes last seasonsimply came down to basic fundamentals, he said.

    BACK ON TRACK?

After a string of five straight playoff appearances from2002-06, Ionia has not had a winning season since. TheBulldogs should look upon getting back to the postsea-son as an attainable goal.
