I think we all are experiencing a bit of cabin fever. After months of bit-terly cold temperatures and what seemed like never-ending rain—we did witness the wettest April on record!—we couldn’t think of a better time than now to focus on the great outdoors.
To put it simply, we love Sue and Alan Eakle’s inviting outdoor living space. They have literally transported all the wonderful comforts of the indoors, outdoors. It is no wonder their friends and family drop by on the weekends for impromptu visits.
This issue also features a quartet of gardeners who share their pas-sion for planting and getting their hands dirty in an effort to transform their back yards into heavenly escapes. Talk about green thumbs!
We hope you enjoy what is left of spring. After all, summer is right around the corner. In fact, we’re already hard at work on the next issue which will feature a one-of-a-kind pent-house in the heart of downtown Dayton and a look back at some of the great rooms featured in this year’s Designers’ Show House and Gardens, which will be a great resource for decorating ideas in your home, straight from the profes-sionals! You should see it in your mail-boxes the end of July.
If you would like to shoot us a line either email [email protected] or post a comment at Housetrends Dayton on Facebook!
Sincerely,
Evelyn Yaus and the Housetrends staff

A beautiful garden can be birthed by just about anyone. It doesn’t matter if the creator is a professional with a master
gardening degree or a hobbyist who finds solitude and joy in a back yard. It’s ultimately dedication and devotion that
breeds a certain kind of art form in what would often be a simple space. F Nothing proves that more than the stories
behind four separate gardens located within three miles of each other in the Oakwood area. These gardens each cre-
ate their own natural tapestry: blooming in sun, bowing to shade and becoming sanctuaries to the life around them.

Elizabeth Larkins spends most of her week caring for eight other gardens in the area. At one time, she was even a master organic gardener. Still, she loves for her own personal grounds to sustain them-selves. “My idea with the garden is to be as organic as possible,” Elizabeth says. “I am learning to be less hands-on all the time. I
think a lot of times gardens will take care of themselves.”
Elizabeth says her yard and garden is the result of her own trial and error, personal education through books, and spending time with those who have had more years under their belts. She has developed a love for shrubs and trees,

This tall cypress acts as a focal point in the Larkins garden. A concrete bench is
covered in moss and surrounded by other greenery. Pots filled with colorful flowers
and greens fill in the gaps.

which both provide a beautiful element to her gardens year ‘round and require little to no maintenance.
Evergreens provide a framework that catches the beauty other plants often miss when snow falls. Perhaps one of her favor-ite pieces in the garden is the chamaecy-paris nootkatensis, a tall draping cypress
that adds whimsy to her garden in the summer and a sort of warmth in the winter. When shrubs or trees won’t offer the touch Elizabeth is looking for, she chooses grasses or other perennials to fill in the gaps. Her Japanese forest grass fills the shaded area near her garage and her oak leaf hydrangeas soften the look of her entry gate.
She has one area dedicated to perenni-als and it is there that she plants things that will attract wildlife like the sunflow-ers that feed the goldfinches and the parsley that gives butterflies a place to lay their eggs. For Elizabeth, an educated art-ist, the garden has become a canvas, and not just a job.

It took seven months of internal and external renovations to Lindsey Clark’s new home before she could move into it. Part of the project included the home’s yards. In that time, a framework was cre-ated that she has built upon over the last eight years.
Several surprising gardens now fill her back yard where a 50-foot cliff original-ly sat. Lindsey designed her gardens to offer something different at every turn. A pair of her son’s Peace Corps boots, for instance, serve as a pot for shade grass.
“You can escape in my yard,” she says. “I did that intentionally because you never want to go to the same place twice.”
The grounds are structured with two terraces, several porches and winding paths that take visitors from one place to another. The terraces are often used for entertaining and even offer two separate places when she and her children decide they want to have guests over at the same time. Her porches allow her to enjoy the beauty outside without the hot sun.
Since 90 percent of her yard is shaded, Lindsey uses several hostas, helleborus, hydrangea and boxwoods. She also has many ferns and grasses. Red and white annuals are placed around the garden to offer color to an otherwise green landscape.
While she spends several hours a day in her garden, she prefers plants that don’t need a lot of attention. Her garden comes alive in the spring when 1,000 bulbs bloom and stay vibrant throughout the season as volunteer trees like dog-woods and red buds sprout unannounced throughout her yard.

It would be easy to think that Dana and Steve Datz have formally trained green thumbs, but they’ll be the first to admit that’s not the case. The couple has never taken a gardening class in their lives, yet they have found themselves becoming experts just from their pure love of the hobby.
The couple makes a great pair when it comes to gardening. Steve loves working with plants in the shade while Dana pre-fers the sun. Their garden started out as a border of red begonias along their sidewalk
and has manifested itself into an amazing creation. “I tease Steve that my goal is to never have him mow again,” Dana says. “I may be closer than I think. So many won-derful plants and so little space.”
The origins of their garden began when their children grew up and moved out. Suddenly they were left with a yard that was waiting for new life. They began fill-ing space with plants they would discover over time and have never stopped since.
Steve now has 50 different types of
hostas as well as beautiful flowers like bleeding heart and astilbe. A wonder-ful collection of birdhouses that he built fills one panel of their privacy fence and attracts many types of birds. A fountain in the middle of the back yard is home to a toad, frog and chipmunk.
Dana’s favorite part of the whole year comes down to one moment. “My favorite part of gardening is on that early spring day when my lady shovel breaks the earth for the first time,” she says. “The smell is magic.”

Whimsical statues bring a touch of charac-ter to the formal garden. A retaining wall adds a second level to the Everly garden. Hens and chicks can be found poking out
of the retaining wall throughout the garden.
Donna Everly’s love for gardening started as a child when she hung around a local nursery every day after school. Her experi-ence, however, began the day that nursery finally put her to work repotting seedlings.
As a child, she always had a garden at her parents’ home and she carried on the tradition as her own children grew up. There always seemed to be a need for a
garden since her children were active in 4-H Club. As life changed and the children eventually left, Donna continued to find a reason to garden.
When she moved to Dayton, she found herself with a yard that had “no bones,” as she puts it. She put in shrubs, evergreens, Japanese maple and blue spruce trees to create a structure. She too loves the

evergreens because they catch the winter beauty that comes after flowers fade.
Various herbs are sprinkled throughout her garden. Parsley serves as a welcome mat to butterflies to lay their eggs and thyme is grown for her own personal cooking. Potted plants are strategically positioned around the yard while plants like hens and chicks spontaneously pop
up in her retaining wall.Donna had a pergola and fence built
on the perimeter of her garden to create a natural border. Still, their open design allows her garden to breathe. A bench beneath her pergola has become a favorite resting spot for not only her, but also her dogs. It’s there that she is able to survey her garden’s beauty and take in small
details like the webs left behind by big gar-den spiders. The spot is a wonderful place to meditate, relax and observe the work of her hands.

Playing outside takes on a whole new meaning for one Sugarcreek Township couple

A refreshing centerpieceThe Eakles’ Dallas friends have to take some of the blame for the project growing into a full-fledged outdoor entertainment center. “They were our inspiration,” says Alan, a die-hard outdoorsman who fell in love with open-air living spaces he saw in both Texas and Florida.
The back yard already had a pool and the couple knew they wanted that feature to stay. “We spend weekends by the pool, and entertain and grill,” says Sue. “We tease our friends about renewing their pool passes each year.”
First on the scene was John Chmiel, senior designer for The Seibenthaler Company. Chmiel says landscaping installed a few years ago, including box-woods and burning bush, was pushed up
against the house. It also didn’t showcase the pool, as well as the pond and putting green built by the Eakles on their extend-ed property. To accompany the pool, the Eakles were certain they wanted a place to entertain under cover, and a water feature that could be enjoyed from inside the house, as well as from seating areas outdoors.
One look at Chmiel’s conceptual drawing that included a covered structure extend-ing out from the house and matching its rooflines and exterior—with an inte-rior that housed a television, full kitchen, fireplace, multiple gathering areas and counter seating—and the Eakles relatively simple party barn went by the wayside. In addition to summer pool gatherings, the
Eakles started dreaming about fall football games and derby parties.
Chmiel brought in Greater Dayton Construction Group to partner on the project. “The challenge was to create a space that can hold parties of up to 90 people and still be intimate,” says Ray Bell, residential sales manager for Greater Dayton. “We created a three-dimensional graphic of the proposed space, and that further sealed the deal for the Eakles.”
Creating a first impressionBut first things first: in the front of the house, stood a long, drawn out view of the neighbor’s chain link fence and cars, so it was decided that moving the driveway would be a key part of the overall project.
030-036 nFEA OutdoorArcade.indd 32 5/9/11 11:47:47 AM
The master plan moved the drive-way against the property line to create a screen effect and offer maximum views of the front of the house. The front walk was also reconfigured and now features a curved approach to the house, and an apron so visitors can step out of cars without stepping in the grass. “From the street, you’d never guess it was the same place,” says Alan.
OPENING SPREAD: The stone fireplace sets the inviting tone in the outdoor living space. LEFT: The homeowners angled the addition so it can take advantage of the views of the pool, water feature and pond. BELOW: A putting green and pond complete the out-door escape. BOTTOM: The reconfigured front walk curves toward the front of the house.

Bell says another initial—and somewhat challenging task—was retrenching pool plumbing and relocating both its equipment and the house’s air conditioning units.
Propane lines were also need-ed. Buckeye Pools extended the existing pool, retiled it and added swim-up benches—a hit with the Eakles and their friends with pool passes.
Bell brought in JCH Con-crete as an additional part-ner. Old concrete around the pool was eliminated and several patterns of stamped concrete pavers now line the

space around the pool, a walk-way from a courtyard to the structure, and other locations within the project.
The structure was built at an angle because Bell says Alan
wanted to see people enjoying themselves at the nearby pool and putting green beyond the pond, built by Alan and Sue’s son, Greg.
Attention to detailBell says a number of building methods enhanced the beauty and value of the structure that measures about 40x20 feet. The project design called for the façade to blend in with the architecture of the house, including a clipped roof and dormers that mirror its exteri-or. Three-inch thick limestone caps were used for all the walls and fireplace hearth. An angled roofline offers extra flair for the television area while gran-ite countertops raise the wow factor, as do the Wolf appli-ances in the kitchen.
Bell says, while an easy way to handle the wood slatted roof would have been to follow a right angle upward utilizing heavy pieces of trim board, “Each miter was cut on site. The trim cutter had his hands full. He did a great job.”
Visually stimulatingGranite accent boulders were placed around the pond and in the landscape. The buff-to-blue colored limestone used within the structure match-
es the retaining walls of the pond, creating a visual con-nection to the house. Before construction, story color-boards were used with test samples to ensure they were to exact specifications the Eakles wanted. “Because so much was changing, this was a key con-cept,” Chmiel explains.
Chmiel’s approach to the landscaping includes drifts or masses of one color blending into another and layering up to the house or other architec-tural structures. He also used varying heights, low close to the house so nothing blocks the vista views, and larger to add splashes of color as back-drops.
The landscaping also in cludes an abundance of color around the pool, with taller knock-out roses positioned at the back of the waterfall, which sits beyond the pool. Additional plants include coneflowers, service berry, dwarf globe, sedum and blue spruce. “It’s a natural setting versus formal and ostenta-tious,” says Chmiel.

But all that’s behind the Eakles now, and as Alan says, it was well worth it. “You could literally live out here.”

Fired up!
As the temperature outside rises, we all tend to get that urge to migrate outdoors. With a cool drink in hand, one of the first things we do is fire up the grill. Summer goes hand-in-hand with outdoor barbecues, and there’s nothing quite like cooking a juicy steak or pork tenderloin.

Meanwhile, cut pork tenderloin into large, 1½ to 2-inch chunks and place into a large bowl. Add ¼ cup Napoleon® Savory Chicken and Rib Spice, and 2 tablespoons olive oil to the bowl and mix well to coat pork completely. Skewer the seasoned pork, packing pieces together tightly, onto three of the skewers. Cover and set aside until needed. Remove vegetables from marinade, reserving marinade, and thread onto three skewers, pressing the vegeta-bles together firmly. Cover and set aside. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Grill pork kebobs for 6-8 minutes, turning and brushing with basting sauce during final 2-3 minutes of cooking, until lightly charred and cooked throughout (internal temperature should be 165°F).
After the first 5 minutes of cooking the pork kebobs, place vegetable kebobs onto grill. Grill vegetables for 4-6 minutes, turn-ing and basting with reserved marinade every 1-2 minutes, or until lightly charred and tender. Move vegetable kebobs to top rack of grill to keep warm, turning occasion-ally while pork is cooking. Remove skewers from grill, and serve with warmed pita bread and extra basting sauce on the side.

Couple dances their way through life

It’s saturday nIght and you’re surrounded by frIends,
dancing and having a great time. A state-of-the-art stereo system blasts your favor-
ite songs, while colored lights flash and doors open to an outdoor oasis where
the party continues. If you are friends of Mike and Olga Dyer, you’re not out at
some extravagant new party spot, you’re at their home, in their personal night club
where they entertain nearly every weekend. When Mike married Olga, who is
from a busy city in South America, she expressed the desire to live in a more rural
environment when they came back to the States after their wedding. “She was in
love with the climate, the leaves changing colors, the different seasons,” says Mike.
The couple wasn’t in any particular hurry to buy and they looked at over one hun-
dred homes before realizing that everything they were looking for could be found
in a golf course community. Although neither of them actually golf, the picturesque
landscapes would allow plenty of ideal views from a front porch or back patio.

A passion for danceThe home they decided on was a build-er’s model in the Country Club of the North, which they loved due to the many upgrades, but it also allowed them to add their own flair through decorating. The couple’s personality is shown most in the entertainment areas of the house includ-ing the home theater and the disco room in the basement. Mike says there is rarely a weekend without 40 or 50 friends over for a dinner party with plenty of dancing. Olga loves to dance and was in a well-known dance group in Colombia where she grew up. “She always said she wanted a place to dance and that was one stipula-tion we were looking for in a house…it had to have some kind of space we could turn into a ballroom/disco area,” Mike says.
The couple transformed an unfinished space in the basement to their disco, com-plete with a bar, open dance floor, disco ball and top-of-the-line stereo system and flashing lights. The room also includes slid-ing doors that open to the back patio, which becomes an extension of the disco. Mike says the party often ends up outside in the warmer months, and because of rock speak-ers on the patio, no one ever misses a beat.
The patio is an impressive site created by Dwight Goodin of Paver Planet, who worked to create something truly unique, which is a frequent request of Mike’s. “The patio’s inspiration is a raft floating over the water,” Goodin says. Mike spends a lot of time in the Caribbean and wanted a tropical feel in his own back yard. Goodin and his team created the effect by framing the patio with reclaimed glass that has been broken and tumbled. The glass is under-lit to give a perfect glow at night, while the fire pit on the patio sits in front of a water wall that puts out a calm and soothing noise.
OVERLEAF: The back patio emulates a floating island due to Mike’s love of the Caribbean. OPPOSITE: Dwight Goodin of Paver Planet worked with decorator Theresa Terebinski to choose the perfect, contem-porary fountain in the front yard. TOP: The disco includes a bar with funky seating and club-like lighting. RIGHT: The walkway lead-ing to the back patio is made from cut lime-stone that is under-lit for a dramatic effect. FAR RIGHT: No disco is complete without the disco ball. This room is the heart of the party scene at the house.

Designer detailsBack inside, if the dance party ends early, guests can make their way to the home theater for a late night screening of their favorite movie. Mike is not fond of the typical furniture found in most home theaters, and wanted something a little lighter. His decorator, Theresa Terebinski, suggested he use a few green leather chairs he had in a previous home; Mike loved the idea and they ordered more chairs in a variety of colors. “They’re just very comfortable and not as formal, so guests can really make themselves at home when we’re watching a movie,” Mike says.
With all of the entertaining going on in this house, it wouldn’t be complete without the latest technology to control everything. Mike Volk, who worked on the audio/visual elements throughout the house, introduced the homeowners to the
Savant system—the first and only Apple-based control, automation and entertain-ment system.
“At the heart of the system is an Apple computer, which talks with all the other components throughout the home,” Volk says. “The best thing about the system is the fact that the user interface is the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, so we literally have iPads built into the walls for really convenient usage,” he says.
The system is used in independent zones, with independent source controls so the homeowners can listen to multiple different sources in every room simul-taneously. If there is a song on satellite radio and Mike or Olga wish to know more about the artist or album, all they have to do is look at the iPad and all the informa-tion is right at their fingertips.
ABOVE: The theater used to be a home office, but now is full of colorful leather chairs, creating the perfect place to watch movies or a big game. TOP RIGHT: A powder room in the house displays Mike’s love of color, as well as his passion for the beach. OPPOSITE: In the formal living room, Mike shows off his love of art with two colorful glass sculptures that frame the fireplace.

An open bookPractically every room in the couple’s home is used for entertaining and the open layout was an element the couple loved. The large kitchen/great room is a popular gathering place and also has a fantastic view. “We chose not to dress the windows along that entire side of the house to bring in an abundant amount of natural light,” Terebinski says.
One change Mike did make to the home was the addition of a wine room in the kitchen, which used to be a second pantry. “I love wine and it’s something that I col-lect and really wanted to incorporate into the house,” Mike says. “It’s great because it’s really part of the kitchen and because the kitchen is so open it’s very visible so guests can go in and look around,” he says.
LEFT: The wine room in the kitchen was created from a pantry. Mike loves having it accessible to guests. BOTTOM LEFT: The eating bar in the kitchen is perfect for allow-ing the cook to be part of the party, while guests sip cocktails and nibble on appetizers. BOTTOM: Theresa Terebinski worked close-ly with Mike to choose furniture throughout the house. OPPOSITE TOP: The formal din-ing room is the ideal space for dinner parties and shows off the couple’s fondness of more modern design.

Overall, Mike is very proud of the fact that he did not have to sacrifice his contem-porary design style, even though his home is in a more traditional neighborhood. “We didn’t build from the ground up and we had this shell to work with that I think really worked to our advantage,” he says. “Everything fell together exactly how I like it and when I come home at night I’m just stunned that I live here.”

Dining “al fresco” may be an Italian concept, but we
Americans also do our fair share of outdoor entertaining. At the first
sight of spring, we reclaim our outdoor patios and decks as extended
living areas of our homes, and weather permitting, we cook, eat,
drink, and host our parties outside. From brunch to lunch to a bar-
beque dinner or buffet, there are so many ways to enjoy the outdoor
dining experience. To kick off the season, we’re offering the following

The lovely outdoor luncheon A luncheon, even outdoors, is typically a bit dressier than just a lunch or brunch so it’s the perfect way to celebrate a spring birth-day, a bridal shower or a baby shower. To make it more special, lose the paper products and go right to the good stuff. There’s something so decadent about using your best china and silver outdoors. Perhaps it’s that juxtaposition of the refined against the back drop of the not-so-refined nature of, well, nature. In any case, use your most beautiful dishes, stemware and silverware outside and see how they scream “Elegant! Extravagant! Ooh la la!” If china feels too high-brow for your gathering, then opt for wonderfully fun melamine dishes paired with coordinating acrylic drink glasses. Check out Pfaltzgraff.com for a variety of melamine and acrylic in colors and patterns that range from fun to sophisticated.
If possible, hold more formal outdoor parties on solid ground such as brick or stone surfaces since guests will be dressed for the occasion. To create the perfect floral to finish your table, look no further than your yard. Flowering or fruiting branches are the perfect touch for an outdoor tablescape. If available, hosta or magnolia leaves also make a stunning table centerpiece when arranged in vases alone, or with other flowers.
Serving your luncheon “buffet style” is completely appropriate, but for a more formal affair recruit family or teenagers to serve your guests at their tables. Whatever the occasion, get creative with menu items or decorations. For instance, if you’re throwing a baby shower, consider serving new potatoes, baby carrots or baby greens and print menu cards for each table so guests make the connection and marvel at your cleverness!
Barbecues and buffetsFor Father’s Day or to celebrate a graduation, a casual barbecue is perfect. Even on Father’s Day Dad may want to “man the

barbecue” so let him—he is the honored guest after all! To keep dad on task, assign someone as the food runner to take orders and deliver food to and from the grill.
Light up the nightCrank up the ambience for your evening party with warm firelight and fabulous aromas. Candelabras are the epitome of grand dining, but a collection of candle-sticks on a silver tray will also do the trick. If you’d rather not use real candles, you can still enjoy the same warm light with battery-operated candles without the fear of fire and the mess of dripping wax. Strands of small clear lights woven through trees, shrubs and fences also add a marvelous glow. Plant fragrant blos-soms around your patio and relish in their heady scent particularly at dusk. A few to consider: viburnum, jasmine, mock orange and passion vine. The fire pit has become a popular gathering place at outdoor parties so position one or several Ph
