“O–H”…“I–O” has become the staple sound heard on streets around central Ohio every fall. It doesn’t matter where you are, as soon as someone screams “O–H,” everyone around joins in with “I–O.”

This city believes in teamwork, whether coming together to support our favorite football team, or to support our local charities. In this issue, you will be touring the homes of three great families—local celebrities in fact, who love living in central Ohio, and, in the spirit of teamwork are giving back on a daily basis.

We visit with OSU’s own Jim and Ellen Tressel, 10TV News anchor Andrea Cambern and professional football player Mike Furrey. These local celebrities and their families have invited us in to not only see their beautiful homes, but also to learn a little more about the charities they support and why these organiza-tions are important in their lives.

I have always loved how this city rallies around a team or a cause with one goal in mind: to win. We hope you enjoy view-ing these great homes, but more importantly, we hope you will join us in supporting one of these great charities. To learn more about all of them, please visit www.housetrends.com.

Sincerely,

Steve and Cara Hesson and the Housetrends staff

[Recruits] spend so much time on campus, but here they finally get a chance to kick their shoes off... I want people to feel at home.

WorkoutThe first project Justus designed and built for the Tressels was a 24x30-foot wood-shop behind the garage. While Ellen’s hob-bies are swimming and golf, Jim’s hobby is woodworking and the woodshop allows ample room for Jim to work on projects with his son, Zak.

Next, Justus’ company added a den to give the Tressels “his and her” offices separated by French doors. They are cus-tom finished by Justus and his brother, Brian, and include a built-in trophy shelf/bookcase and file cabinets. The Justus brothers are trim carpenters by trade so they do a lot of the building themselves. “We’re not typical builders since we actu-ally build,” says Justus.

Interior designer Melinda Peters Elliott of Fine Designs and Interiors, Ltd. was recruited to join the team. She had worked with Justus on other projects. “Melinda understands that I want a warm, inviting feel to our home, something to put people at ease,” says Ellen, adding, “I don’t want our home to be a showpiece with untouch-ables all over the place.”

Ellen describes herself as a “basic beige” person. “I like a neutral base with accent colors, particularly red. It’s nice to change things around and update,” she says.

“I clicked with Ellen and was able to find rugs, accessories and fabrics that I knew she would like,” says Peters Elliott.

Together the team worked on another addition. “Ellen called and said, ‘G.O., I’ve been thinking we could add a sunroom to the great room.’ She always has good ideas and this one made total sense because it provides additional space for entertaining overflow,” explains Justus. “It’s a seamless addition; from the outside it looks like the room was always there.” Fittingly, the sunroom has several large windows which provide more natural light. Peters Elliott selected subtle greens accented with coral for the furnishings and rugs.

That’s entertainmentEntertaining is serious business in the Tressel home, particularly in the fall dur-ing home game weekends. “It’s common to have guests here Wednesday through Sunday,” says Ellen.

Fall football is closely followed by the holiday season, and the Tressel home hosts large parties. In December and January they host parents of recruits who, Ellen explains, “spend so much time on campus, but here they finally get a chance to kick their shoes off. Several arrive at one time on a bus. We usually serve hors d’oeuvres or dessert. The television is on with foot-ball games. I want people to feel at home.”

In the spring they would love to have a barbeque for the players, and although one has been discussed and even planned it has yet to happen for one reason or another. Ellen notes with a chuckle that, “Coming to the head coach’s home is some-what like going to the principal’s office,” so they don’t have the players over often.

“Football is a 12-months-a-year job. You’re just short-changing yourself if you don’t take a break in July,” Ellen says.

Guest and garden retreatsThe Tressels then enlisted Justus and the team’s help to enlarge their guest suite. This time it was a dormer to add more space and light. “This was Ellen’s idea. She wants to know how things are built and how they work and jumps right in regardless of how dusty or torn up the space is,” he says.

The suite has a clean, organized feel designed by Peters Elliott. Silhouette blinds were installed which she describes as being a soft shutter that you can roll up. “They provide privacy but let in light too,” she says.

During the school year the guest suite is occupied three days a week by Bob Mansfield, the football team’s “academic encourager.” Bob is a retired school prin-cipal whose job is to check the players’ classroom progress. Ellen pointed out that such monitoring was based on a program

The Tressel Family Fund For CanCer PrevenTion researCh In 2001 Jim’s mother, Eloise, died two weeks before the first game Jim coached at The Ohio State University. What started with a blood clot in her leg led to the discovery of pancreatic and liver cancer. She was treated at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. “The care Dr. Schuller and his staff gave was remarkable. They do incred-ible things at The James and we knew right away that we wanted to become more involved,” says Ellen Tressel. Also, Jim’s father, Lee, passed away in 1981 from cancer, at age 56.

They established the Tressel Family Fund for Cancer Prevention Research in Eloise and Lee Tressel’s name.

Monies raised by the fund go toward education, prevention and research for any kind of cancer. To date over $1,000,000 has been raised through speeches, special events and individual donations.

For more information, includ-ing how to donate, contact The James Line: 1-800-293-5066 or www.jamesline.com.

Jim started at Youngstown State and has been so successful that other OSU teams are doing something similar.

The Tressels’ large lot provides plenty of privacy but plenty of grass to cut. This is not a task they contract out because Jim likes the job. “He has very long days, 12-14 hours, and he is out the door at 5:00 or 5:30 a.m.,” says Ellen. “He gets on the John Deere and puts on his headphones. That, to him, is relaxing,” she explains. Ellen cuts the grass too, but defers to Jim when he calls and says, “Save the grass for me!”

Grass cutting is one thing, but weeding is another. The Tressels work with Mandy Bonnette of Down the Garden Path for their landscaping design. “Our goal was to make the yard and gardens more mainte-nance-free,” Ellen says. “Down the Garden Path knows how to do that,” she says.

Character countsThe Tressels believe that when recruiting a team of professionals, integrity is as important as the quality of workmanship. Jim Tressel sums it up this way: “G.O. is a craftsman extraordinaire, but more impor-tantly, he is trustworthy. Whether we are in town or not, G.O.’s dependability gives us peace of mind that the job will be done well and our home is in great hands.”

Justus modestly concedes that he’s earned the Tressels’ trust. “We even let the dogs out.”

Taryn Langwasser will never forget the day she found out her daughter Olivia was diagnosed with cancer, only two days after starting kindergarten. “The doctor told me her blood work was alarming...they took me into a conference room and told me she had Leukemia and her white blood count was severely elevated,” Taryn says. Thus began a long, life-changing and sometimes painful journey, but through it all Olivia managed to stay resilient. “Kids handle the situation bet-ter than parents in many cases,” Taryn says. “Parents carry the long term fear, but the kids only fear the next shot.”

When Taryn and her husband Mike first found out that Olivia qualified for Make-A-Wish they were in the thick of Olivia’s battle and didn’t give it much thought, but Taryn did find that talking about the wish helped get Olivia through some of the hard times. “If she was really sick or having a gloomy day we would talk about what she wanted to wish for,” Taryn says. “It was a fun thing to do to get her mind off the bad moment she was in.”

Last winter a wish volunteer came to visit Olivia and asked her to think about three wishes she possibly wanted hoping that they could fulfill one. This visit ignited Olivia’s imagination to wish for things such as a trip to Egypt to dig for mummies and an elaborate water park in her back yard. After realizing that those wishes may not come true, Olivia and a wish volunteer came up with an option that had Olivia very excited. She had decided to wish for her basement to be made over into a great fun space. Make-A-Wish swooped in and started the process rolling.

Interior designer Linda Baas McClelland was contacted some time into the project when the basement was already dry-walled and ready for the interior finishes. “I was so charmed by Olivia who always has a smile on her face and a giggle in her voice,” McClelland says. Olivia wanted a performance, play and entertainment area in the basement, a tall order for McClelland to complete. The color scheme was inspired by Olivia’s favorites. “The whimsical colors are a reflection of Olivia’s bright spirit,” McClelland says.

Keeping within the budget, McClelland selected furnishings, fabric for pillows and an area rug. The furniture had to be durable, col-orful and include, as a request by Olivia, swiv-el chairs, according to McClelland. Accessories

were kept to a minimum, keeping in mind the activity level of kids. “I consider it an honor that I got the opportunity to work on this project,” McClelland says. “Olivia is an inspiration as well as everyone who donated their time, talent and materials.”

An undeniable presence in the basement is the huge yellow slide that Olivia can take from upstairs to put her in her fabulous new space. “She hates when people ask her what her favorite part of the room is because she loves everything so much,” Taryn says. “But I can tell you that she doesn’t use the stairs much!”

Today Olivia is in remission and energetic as ever. Olivia and her family take one day at a time, but seeing how happy Olivia is in her new space never fails to make Taryn smile. “We are so grateful for Make-A-Wish for doing things like this to bring such joy to kids’ faces,” she says. www.makeawishohio.org.

Many people invite Andrea Cambern into their home every day. She’s a familiar face in Columbus as a 10TV News anchor, but when she’s not behind the news desk, or lending her time to several charitable causes, she can be found in her unique German Village home.

A little bit of luckAndrea and her husband Brett had the unique opportunity to build a new home in the German Village when they found out their neighbor, whose house was built on a double lot decided to split up the land—Andrea and Brett jumped at the chance. “The challenge of building new was to make it look old, make it appear that it had been here for over 100 years and fit in with the rest of the neighborhood,” Andrea says.

Two years were spent designing the house and going through the approval department with the German Village before the building process began. “We went with a kind of industrial look, because mixed in with the houses in the German Village were some factories and commercial spaces,” she says.

The building plan the couple came up with is open and unique, but they wanted to make sure the space would feel inviting, warm and comfortable. “The kind of space where people would feel at home throwing their feet up on the couch or coffee table,” Andrea notes.

Personal tasteAndrea started the building process with an interior designer but found they just couldn’t get on the same page, so early on she abandoned that route and decided she would try decorating the space herself. “I’m constantly ripping pages out of magazines so there’s really not an original idea in here,” she confesses with a laugh. Keeping files of things she would see—little details or big room spaces also helped her stay organized.

“I just broke out on my own and told myself, ‘I’m going to do this’ and I did,” she says. According to Andrea, she could be happy in any number of styles of houses, but when it’s all said and done she and Brett are most comfortable in a quiet, casual and eclectic environment.

The home consists of a monochromatic palette as Andrea prefers to keep bright colors out of the equation. “I’ll throw color in and it just doesn’t feel right to me,” she says. “I’m not good with color and I think in my colorful world I like to come home and have it be very tranquil and peaceful.”

Not everything in the home is new; in fact, one of Andrea’s favorite design styles is mixing antiques and repurposed ele-ments with new and modern pieces. One special piece in the home that Andrea loves is an old patent file—an old piece from the early 1800s that sits in the office area. “It’s this chest of drawers and I just love it, it just has a great history,” she says. “In the drawers are little logs of people who filed patents and the dates and their descriptions. It has this great patina to it and it’s really the most impractical piece in the house, but I was just drawn to it and I love it.”

But topping her love for the patent file is Andrea’s favorite piece in the house: her kitchen island. She found it in an antique show in Atlanta while looking for something unique to be a focal point in the kitchen. “I came around the corner and there it was—this old, ratty, covered in cobwebs, filthy dirty piece of something,” she describes. The person selling the piece told Andrea it had come off a shipping dock in Belgium somewhere. “It had these big heavy rusty handles and this piece of stone on top and I thought, ‘This is perfect!’” she says. After convincing Brett that it would be something worth keeping they cleaned it up and it quickly became their favorite piece in the house. “We built the kitchen around it using all new cabinets and appliances, but it stands out in the center—this chunky piece with a history that we’re not quite sure of,” she says.

decorating trendsRooms that bring it togetherThe living room is definitely a space where the couple can relax, curl up on the couch and unwind after a long day. The scale of the furniture is large, but the room isn’t, so it takes on a cozy feeling, which Andrea really likes. She wasn’t crazy about the fireplace initially because she thought it was too boxy, but she saw something that inspired her and ended up having the fireplace covered in leather which changed her view completely.

Everything that Andrea describes as her style comes together flawlessly in the dining room. The focal point is a chandelier which Andrea first spotted in a design magazine, but decided to have one locally made. A local metal fabricator made the metal tray and Brett hollowed out candles so they could be placed over light bulbs.

It’s clear to see that one of the greatest bonuses to this home is the use of outdoor space. Because the lot is L-shaped, an almost hidden outdoor living room offers privacy and a great entertaining spot. Not to be outdone is the rooftop gar-den space that offers great views of downtown and is perfect for social occasions during Columbus summers.

Andrea and Brett have worked on all of their previous houses, but something about this one feels organic and com-fortable. “This house is most us, we finally got it,” she says. “We don’t spend enough time here and when we are here we don’t want to leave.”

Andrea is very involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Central Ohio, the main reason being her mother was diagnosed with Lymphoma when Andrea was young and it was a large part of her life for most of her life.

She is especially involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, an endurance sports training program. The program provides training to run or walk in marathons and half marathons or participate in triathlons or bike rides. Since 1988, more than 380,000 volunteer participants have helped raise more than $900 million.

“They pair you up with someone who is battling the disease so you have an added motivation to not only raise money but to get you to the end of whatever your goal is,” Andrea says. “It’s a powerful motivator when you have a child battling blood cancer standing there cheering you on. I’m very passionate about it.”

Every ear, Housetrends features dozens of beautiful homes

that each have something special to offer our readers. Gracious homeowners,

all with their own unique story, invite us in to see the most sacred of spaces,

allowing us to catch a snapshot of their lives. F In NFL wide receiver Mike

Furrey and his wife Koren’s case, the snapshot is the best part of the story.

Their West Jefferson home is amazing, but going beyond just the aesthetics—

to their motivations and journey—is well worth the trip. For the Furreys, who

both grew up in Hilliard and met in the second grade, building this home was

the culmination of a lifetime of hard work mixed with, in Mike’s words, “a lot

of dreaming.” continued >

Page 64: Columbus Housetrends

Realizing a dreamFrom the time he was young, Mike had a goal. Like many boys, he wanted to be a professional athlete some day, and like so few, he actually became one, even if he did take the long route. For Mike, success was not overnight. In fact, he spent years bouncing from one team to another, facing tryouts, cuts and little recognition. This meant a lot of sacrifice and moving around for the family. All the while, Koren was by his side. “I remember when we lived in other cities, we would drive around and look at homes. I would see these nice houses and think, ‘I wonder who lives there. I won-der what they do,’” Koren recalls.

Eventually, Mike’s dedication paid off, and he had a breakout season with the Detroit Lions in 2006. That off-season, he landed the first extended deal of his career, a three-year contract with the Lions. Early this year, Mike signed with the Cleveland Browns, which will mean that the family, which has grown to include their daughter Makayla and sons Stone and Kanon, will set up roots in both Columbus and Cleveland. After moving into their newly-built home, which happens to be just two houses down from Koren’s parents, they call Central Ohio home during the off-season.

The back yard is an outdoor

living dream. The pool area com-

bined with outdoor seating and a

brick fireplace offer a warm and

inviting space.

“Being able to build this house was another dream-come-true for me,” Mike explains. “When I was playing in the arena league, I would come home in the summer and frame houses to make money. That gave me a lot of ideas to incorporate into this house.”

Designer dadInterior decorator Melinda Peters Elliott of Fine Designs and Interiors, Ltd. says Mike did more than just “incorpo-rate ideas” into the home’s blueprint. “Mike had a lot to do with the design of the house. It was something he

building trends

64 housetrends.com

Page 65: Columbus Housetrends

had been planning since he was little, and he drew up the plans himself,” she says.

Koren agrees, as she teases Mike about going “wild” when he was planning their back-yard pool, which is reminiscent of an exotic Caribbean resort. “I wanted it to be a simple zero-entry pool. You know, one that’s safer for kids. Then, Mike took over. Now, we have a bridge, a grotto, a tunnel. You name it. It’s there. I feel like we can’t take vacations because we have a resort in our back yard.”

On the inside, Mike says he wanted a lot of open space to create a kind of old-world, “castle-like” style. Peters Elliott explains that Mike and Koren went with rich but simple col-ors and fabrics that give the

space a masculine feeling. In the master bedroom, faux painting on the ceiling looks like a sheet of brown leather stretched across the room and offsets the elegant, velvet drapes handmade by Peters Elliott. Most telling about the couple’s style, however, is a black and white photograph of their children’s tiny feet that hangs above their bed, always reminding them of the importance of their family.

Mike designed a house that was made to entertain, and that’s just the way he and Koren wanted it. Their great room, which includes their living room, dining area and kitchen, and leads out to the back yard, is the perfect spot for all their entertaining. “We love to open up our home to guests,” Mike says. “There is rarely an empty seat at the table. We spend a lot of time with friends and family.” Their extended family also includes four young men from the Columbus community that move in with them each summer as Mike mentors them. “What’s the point in all this space if there is no one to share it with?” Mike says.

Child’s playThe Furreys wanted their home to be a place where their kids could grow and play with all their friends. “We don’t want our kids to have to go elsewhere to have a good time,” Koren explains. “We want this to be the house where everyone wants to be.”

Big sister Makayla’s whimsical bedroom is enough to make even the most unruly of children content. Her lofted bed sits on top of a built-in playhouse with a kitchen just like Mom’s. If their goal is to keep their kids happy in their own home, Mike and Koren are definitely headed in the right direction.

“Mike’s accomplishments allowed us to provide our children with a great life,” Koren says, “But we never forget the hard work it took.”

a little perspectiveMike saves the basement for last on the Housetrends tour. He may not have done it on purpose, but it seems very fitting. Surrounding the entrance to his home theatre, which Mike says is always packed whenever they “get the screen going,” is his trophy case filled with the helmets of all the teams he’s played for in his career. Also hanging on the walls are jerseys of just some of the talented people he’s gone head-to-head with, including the likes of Kurt Warner, Roy Williams and Isaac Bruce. “I got to play with these guys, most of them future hall-of-famers,” Mike says. “It just really puts my life into perspective. I’m so lucky.”

This attitude is what carries Mike and Koren through their most important work: their charity. They established the Mike Furrey Foundation, which allows them to sponsor and participate

in programs to help the underprivileged, especially children. They are very active in both the Columbus and Detroit areas, and as Koren explains, could not do it without the help of the community in which they grew up and still call home. “Columbus has always been good to us. People here have embraced our vision. No one ever says no to donating to a fundraiser or attending our charity golf tournament. It’s that kind of hospitality that made us want to call this place home.”

Mike and Koren have reached what many consider the pinnacle of profes-sional success, and they have a beautiful home to show for it. However, they will be the first to tell you that everything they have, including their home, is a platform to discuss their ministry to serve those in need. Koren reminds us of when she used to ask Mike, “I wonder who lives in that house?” as they explored different cities. Now, she says she hopes people who drive by her house, know that she and Mike keep their door open to those individuals who could use a helping hand.

“Last year we took a family on a trip through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We went so we could watch the child while the parents went out to dinner. It was the first time they had been out together alone in seven years,” Koren recalls. It’s times like that, Koren says, that put life into perspective for her and her family. “We are blessed.”
