the journey to freedom
2012 ANNUAL REPORT
DaySpring Villa is Oklahoma’s only certified faith-
based shelter for domestic violence victims and
adult victims of human sexual trafficking. Since
1995, we’ve transformed the lives of more than
6,300 women and children in crisis. Through
goals-based programs, spiritual guidance,
human compassion, and open hearts and
minds, DaySpring Villa turns victims into vibrant
survivors. As a non-profit organization, DaySpring
Villa receives no United Way or government
funding, so our ability to provide these women
and children with protective shelter, basic needs,
and professional services relies on financial gifts
from caring individuals, corporations, foundations,
and churches of every denomination.
In every life there are missteps and unexpected turns, mile
markers and dead ends.
Like a pencil sketch, each of them illustrates who we become as
human beings. But choice is not always an option. Freedom, as
we’re taught and told, isn’t always an option.
For women who’ve made the courageous decision to leave an
abusive partner or escape the underbelly of human sexual
trafficking, freedom seems an elusive dream. They imagine what
it must be like to be the woman, the wife, the girlfriend, who gets
to drive, enjoy friends, or keep contact with their families. They
wonder if routine beatings, torture, or threats of death are a
natural part of a “good” relationship. They question their sanity
and apologize for breathing.
In the end, we are all mere mortals on a journey. From our first
gasp of air to our final gasp of life, we are each on a road that
leads us to become the person we are destined to be. We don’t
always take the right exits and, sometimes, we choose the wrong
shortcuts, but we learn vital lessons along the way. At DaySpring
Villa, we guide battered and trafficked women to the right road
so that their personal journeys start anew—
unfurling in freedom and offering
a second chance to become
the person our Creator always
meant them to be.

2012 was a year of extraordinary leaps for DaySpring Villa. What began as a question mark to predict how the economy might affect the financial gifts and volunteer hours that support our operations was soon placed into God’s hands, enabling us to focus on our goals for the women and children we serve. I knew, just as every member of our staff knew, that God would see that our needs were met.
I wish all of you could see what we witness every day at DaySpring Villa. Throughout the year, we watch broken lives truly heal. We see glimmers of light and hope in the eyes of women and children who have only known terror and pain at the hands of someone who professed their love. We read letters of past guests who’ve achieved nothing short of miracles because we believed they were lives worth saving.
All of this is possible because you believe in our mission to transform the lives of women and children in crisis. For that, our communities grow stronger. We grow stronger. But most importantly, we each become a part of every success story that starts right here.
The Year in Review
DaySpring Villa in 2012 admitted 99 women who brought with them a total of 94 children
seeking shelter from an abusive situation. This is the second year we’ve experienced a decrease in the number of new guests requiring our services; however, the length of their stay continues to increase. In 2012, the average guest stay was 123 days, compared with 95 days in 2011 and 80 days in 2010. Longer stays may be due in part to longer wait times for public housing, tighter budgets for educational grants, and more competitive employment opportunities.
For the fourth consecutive year, DaySpring Villa received more than 2,100 phone calls for assistance. In 2012, our staff responded to 2,271 calls, or an average of 6.2 calls per day. We also recognized the need for more medical assistance for guests who do not qualify for Medicaid, and legal services for guests in child custody situations or who need to file for a divorce or answer other legal matters.
During the first quarter of 2012, our board of directors unanimously agreed that DaySpring Villa would develop the first program of its kind of any private or government organization in Oklahoma to address the needs of adult human sexual trafficking victims. This effort, by far, is the most ambitious task we’ve undertaken to combat a growing problem that affects communities throughout the state.
2012 Milestones and Achievements
DaySpring Villa set five initial goals in 2012 that would enhance our existing guest services and development programs, expand awareness of our facility, and increase financial support. As mentioned earlier, we also elected to take an official stand against sexual trafficking through a new effort called Project Dark 2 Light.
Our achievements during 2012 included:
• The completion and approval of a five-year plan that will be updated and revised annually.
• Expansion of our communications into key communities in Oklahoma City.
• Enhancements of our donor management system to more precisely identify donor demographics, volunteers and their services, in-kind donations, and sources prompting financial gifts, such as fundraisers, our quarterly newsletter and direct mail.
• Enhancements of our development programs to identify volunteers and the type of work or service they provide on our behalf.
• A more robust Church Advisory Board (CAB) now comprised of 38 members who

serve as DaySpring Villa ambassadors at their local churches. CAB members encourage ministries to increase their partnership with DaySpring Villa through additional financial gifts, volunteers, and in-kind donations of food items and other supplies.
• Forging personal relationships and exchanging regular communication with our top donors.
• Improvements to our physical facility, which included a full remodel of our guests’ bathrooms, front bathrooms, and the addition of two guest computers with Internet access so that guests may complete online job and housing applications.
• An increase of volunteers to 1,289 in 2012 compared with 1,075 in 2011. Our volunteers also increased their time with us to 36,066 hours in 2012 compared to 27,738 hours in 2011.
• The addition of more children’s groups to teach safety planning should a mother decide to return to her abuser, and family-type recreational activities including school football games, mother-and-child swimming get-togethers and pizza parties.
• Finally, in April 2012, DaySpring Villa was certified by the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office to address the needs of adult victims of sexual trafficking, making us the first and only certified shelter to offer refuge and services to these women. With our policies, protocols and best practices in place, we received 15 trafficking victims during the year from areas across Oklahoma.
To all of you who dug deeper in your pockets to support us, who responded with critical supplies when we were running short, who sacrificed precious personal time to help us cook, sort, organize, repair and answer the phone—thank you. To our new supporters who took the opportunity to learn more about DaySpring Villa, who entrusted your gifts to an organization you may never have known existed—thank you. And to those medical and legal professionals who are considering donating a portion of your services on behalf of our guests who desperately need you—thank you.
We are blessed that you have chosen us and are grateful to have you on our team.

Domestic violence is an insidious crime in that the wounds inflicted
are not always visible and, in many cases, easily hidden. To prevent
discovery by others, women learn early on how to weave lies that
deflect suspicion. When confronted by others, they are quick to deny
what has become a dirty little secret. Over time, they believe that
they deserve the consequences of their abuser’s rage or jealousy; that
they are always at the center of blame.
Making the decision to leave a violent relationship takes blind
courage. The only certainty is uncertainty, especially when
an abusive partner wields complete physical, emotional and
psychological control over the woman he claims to love. At
DaySpring Villa, we introduce these women to the lives they
were meant to live—free of control, abuse, and the patterns that
repeat the cycle of domestic violence. We help them discover their
independence and how to live self-sufficiently so that they may
enjoy the meaning of true freedom—just like Brenda Mitchell who
wrote us of her journey from battered woman to happy, successful
professional.

“Two times in 1986 and 1987, my three small children and I took refuge at the Baptist
Women’s Shelter, now DaySpring Villa. My husband had been violent and eventually
we had to flee for our lives. I left on foot, leaving our home 40 miles outside of Tulsa
in the countryside. I carried a baby and a two-year-old, while my five-year-old
walked beside us. I had only $4 in laundry quarters in my pocket. My two little ones
didn’t even have shoes.
A kind neighbor took us to the shelter. They helped us get back on our feet and
transitioned us into government housing. But my, what God has done with my life
since then. My children are grown now. I went back to school and became an RN.
I’ve worked as a traveling nurse for eight years now and am licensed in six states.
I make good money, own two small houses in Oklahoma, and do medical missions work in
southern Mexico where I also minister in low-income areas. I have assisted in occasions
of domestic abuse, provided free medical care, and given food to the down-and-out.
I am also getting ready to get married to a wonderful, kind-hearted man who loves
to give and serve God like I do.
For those of you just beginning the road to recovery from domestic abuse or
homelessness—take heart. God is big enough for any situation. Trust Him. Work hard.
You can make it.”

Sexual trafficking is a toxic phenomenon spilling over into towns, cities
and communities throughout Oklahoma. No longer do organized cartels
limit their human commerce to foreign nationals smuggled across our
borders. Instead, they’ve discovered a wealth of prey right here.
Traffickers hide in the night behind computers to lure unsuspecting
victims into a seamy netherworld filled with promises of money, clothes
and travel. They hide in the light where they befriend the troubled and
discontent with understanding and acceptance. Then one day, life as
these women once knew it, becomes a horrific existence of sexual slavery
where they are bought, sold and traded, transported from state to state,
confined to seedy motel rooms, and threatened with torture or death if
they even consider escape.
DaySpring Villa in April 2012 became the first and only shelter in the
state to earn certification by the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office
to provide refuge and services to adult victims of sexual trafficking.
Since then, we’ve admitted 15 women who bear the wounds of an
unimaginable experience that will take years to heal.

Our Project Dark 2 Light is a real-world solution for women who have
escaped sexual trafficking but wonder if their lives offer purpose or
meaning. During 2012, DaySpring Villa analyzed the needs for our
shelter to accommodate the growing population of trafficking victims
who, until now, had nowhere to turn for recovery and healing. Project
Dark 2 Light looks to expand our facility and add the specialized staff
required to work one-on-one with these survivors.
Response by our supporters to fund this program has been nothing short
of spectacular and, every day, we inch closer to meeting our financial
goals that will make Project Dark 2 Light a reality. In the words of one
of these women, the journey to freedom may be more difficult than any
one of us can envision.

Phase II UpdateAs of February 14, 2013, DSV received a total of $567,047.76 in cash, pledges and challenge grants.
With 90% of our fundraising goal met, DaySpring Villa is now in the final stretch to raise the last $91,562.24, by the end of 2013. This will enable DSV to receive a $75,000 challenge grant from the Grace & Franklin Bersen Foundation, and a second challenge grant in the amount of $131,722.00 from the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Foundation, Inc.
Since announcing the launch of Project Dark 2 Light, DaySpring Villa has experienced a wellspring of generosity from individuals,
foundations and churches of every denomination across Oklahoma that recognize the need for our shelter and services to
accommodate adult victims of sexual trafficking. Our staff hasn’t skipped a beat in our efforts to bring attention to this growing
plight. We’ve given facility tours and made presentations to churches, organizations and individuals in our fundraising efforts to
address the need for shelter and services to help trafficking victims reclaim their lives.
To date, Project Dark 2 Light has made extraordinary strides to fund this operation. We achieved Phase I of this project by gaining
certification by the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office in April 2012 to shelter and provide services for adult victims of sexual
trafficking—a feat no other shelter in Oklahoma can claim.
We are getting close to achieving total funding for Phase II– the facility expansion–and are committed and confident that we will
meet both the challenge grant deadlines. Phase III–added operational expenses and specialized staff required to work with these
victims–will see ongoing fundraising efforts.
For more information about Project Dark 2 Light, visit www.DaySpringVilla.com.

Guests at DaySpring Villa were asked to name three things they are free to do now that they were not free to do before.
breathe
go to school
always have toilet paper
Provide a safe shelter that always has the electric on for myself and my children.
I can cut my hair how I like it and wear make-up. I can eat what I want without getting approval. I can go places without checking in every 5 minutes.
Live without the worry that I will be hurt if I do something wrong with the cooking, cleaning, etc.
I can bathe, change my clothes, and wear deodorant whenever I want...without permission!
My kids can now play and be a little loud. I don’t have to tell them to keep it down, fearing what might happen if they woke him.
The ability to sleep through the night without the fear of bad things happening.
free from the fear of being raped
I can look people in the face when they are talking to me.
I get to see my family.
free from being told I’m worthless
free to be happy
I get to go to church.

They were also asked to describe how they feel now that they are on the road to freedom.
I feel like I am fine on my own. I don’t need a man.
I am able to focus on my relationship with God and my kids now that I do not have to worry about shelter, food and clothing.
I get more sleep through the night. It helps me to focus on my goals so I can achieve them.
I feel more confident in raising my daughter and son because now we are safe and free. I am so happy to be able to see my family. I have so much to give and I am starting to believe in myself again. I pray and thank God every day that we are here at DaySpring Villa. That there are so many knid people that donate to this place amazes and humbles me.
I feel free in every sense of the word. I may still flinch when a hand moves fast toward me, and I know it will take time to get that under control. I love not having to look over my shoulder...every second of every day. I’m realizing that we really can get a second chance in life to live the way God wants us to, to help provide for our kids.
independent
hopeful
learning to feel worthy
able to see a future
happy, relaxed and at ease
I feel happy, loved, cared for and protected by God. For the first time in my life I am truly happy and not afraid of living my life like God would have it.

In Hawaii, the word aloha means both hello and
goodbye. At DaySpring Villa, ALOHA stands
for A Life of Hope Ahead—a time to say “hello”
to a future of hope, peace and rest, and a time
to say “goodbye” to the past. We give every
woman who arrives at DaySpring Villa an ALOHA
bracelet to remind her of God’s promise as
written in Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV):
“For I know the plans I have for you,
declares the Lord, plans to prosper you
and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future.”
