Tips for Getting People to Slow Down!!
One of the biggest problems is speed.
Native speakers, especially businesspeople, tend to speak very quickly on thetelephone. Here are some practical tips toget native speakers of English to slowdown!
Immediately ask the person to speak
slowly.
When taking note of a name or important
information, repeat each piece ofinformation as the person speaks.
This is an especially effective tool. By
repeating each important piece ofinformation or each number or letter as thespell or give you a telephone number youautomatically slow the speaker down.
Do not say you have understood if you
have not. Ask the person to repeat untilyou have understood.
Remember that the other person needs to
make himself/herself understood and it isin his/her interest to make sure that you
have understood. If you ask a person toexplain more than twice they will usuallyslow down.
If the person does not slow down begin
speaking your own language!
A sentence or two of another language
spoken quickly will remind the person thatthey are fortunate because THEY do notneed to speak a different language tocommunicate. Used carefully, thisexercise in humbling the other speaker canbe very effective. Just be sure to use it
with colleagues and not with a boss :-)!

Listening Exercise
Millie: Hi, Lisa - I'm in the shopping centre.
Lisa: Hi, Millie. What are you doing?
Millie: I'm looking round the shops. It is Saturday today.
Lisa: Yeah, of course. Honestly, you buy new clothes every Saturday!
Millie: Well, nearly every Saturday.
Lisa: You're always buying new clothes! So, what are you looking for today? Millie: One of those new skirts.
You know, like, everyone's wearing them this autumn.
Lisa: Well, I'm not wearing one, I'm wearing a pair of old jeans. Is there anything special you want to talk
about? Because actually, I'm doing my homework.
Millie: Yes, there is, only you're being so impatient, you don't deserve to hear it. Lisa: OK, Sorry. I'm
listening.
Millie: Well, you know that special CD you want to get?
Lisa: None of the shops have it. Whenever I go into town I always look for it, but it's never there. Millie:
Well, I'm in front of the music shop window and I'm looking at that CD right now. Do you want me to buy it
for you now? Lisa: Oh, yeah. They sell really fast because they're so rare.
Millie: And that group's becoming more well known.
Lisa: I know. It'll be gone if I wait till Monday. I'll pay you when I see you.
Millie: OK. Lisa: Oh, thank you, Millie, Sorry I was cross.
Millie: That's OK. Bye.
Lisa: Bye.
