    INTRODUCTION TO A DATA WAREHOUSE

A data warehouse is a relational database that is designed for query and

analysis rather than for transaction processing

It usually contains historical data derived from transaction data, and also

can include data from different source systems

It separates analysis workload from transaction workload and enables an

organization to analyze their data for effective Decision making

A data warehouse sources its data from the main operational systems but

performs its own processing and stores the data efficiently to allow the data to

be presented in the most usable format.

    TYPES OF DATA WAREHOUSE

    Enterprise Data Warehouse

    Includes data from numerous systems

Includes both Summarized and Detailed Data

    Can be Terrabytes of Data

    Data Mart

Includes only Subset of any Corporate Data (I.e business Unit or Department)

Includes both Summarized and Detailed Data

Avg industry size < = 100 GB of data

    Operational Data store (ODS)

Contains Structured Data from generated directly from transaction Systems

Very little or no Summarized or historical Data

Meets day to day operational user needs for ad hoc query Analysis

    GOALS OF A DATA WAREHOUSE

The data warehouse must make an organizations information easily accessible

The data warehouse must present the organizations information consistently.

The data warehouse must be adaptive and resilient to change.

The data warehouse must be a secured that protects our information

    assets.

The data warehouse must serve as the foundation for improved decision

    making.

The business community must accept the data warehouse if it is to be

    deemed successful.

    INTRODUCTION TO DIMENSIONAL MODELING

What is Dimensional Modeling about ?

A technique for designing databases in order to support

performance dashboards, reporting, and business data analysis

A technique for designing databases around measurable business

    processes

A data modeling approach that stresses ease of use andperformance

    DIMENSIONAL MODELING VOCABULARY

The most common terms used : Dimensions

    Facts

    Measures

    Aggregates

    Slowly Changing Dimensions

    Conformed Dimensions

    SLOWLY CHANGING DIMENSIONS - APPROACHES

    Type I overwrite changed attributes

Type II mark current row end date and add new row (Type II

rows have two date attributes, i.e. RowEffectiveBeginDate and

RowEffectiveEndDate. Both attributes are stored as date data types.)

Type III track changes by including attributes such as

    OriginalAddress, CurrentAddress

    TYPES OF MODELING

    Star Schema

The star Schema is perhaps the simplest data warehouse schema.

It is called a star schema because the entity-relationship diagram of this

schema resembles a star, with points radiating from a central table. Thecenter of the star consists of a large fact table and the points of the star

    are the dimension tables.

A star query is a join between a fact table and a number of dimension

tables. Each dimension table is joined to the fact table using a primarykey to foreign key join, but the dimension tables are not joined to each

    other

    TYPES OF MODELING (Contd..)

    SnowFlake Schema

The snowflake schema is a more complex data warehouse model

than a star schema, and is a type of star schema. It is called a snowflake

schema because the diagram of the schema resembles a snowflake.Snowflake schemas normalize dimensions to eliminate redundancy.

That is, the dimension data has been grouped into multiple tables

    instead of one large table

    WHEN SNOWFLAKE IS OK?

When used as a sub dimensionThe data in the sub dimension is related to the

dimension are at different levels of granularity

The data load times for the data are differentExamples:

    County and state

    District and region

    Ship and battle group
