SPORTS PUBLISHING CORP.SPORTS & ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY (866) 499-9204 Office 2114 N. Flamingo Road, #1273 Pembroke Pines, FL 33028Website: www.sportsandactivities.com

Our Team Dear Readers,Happy Anniversary to us!! This Fall edition of Sports and Activities

Directory marks our three year anniversary for the Davie, Cooper City and Southwest Ranches publication. This little oasis in Broward County proves to be

a unique community where families, businesses, schools and city officials come together in unity to make this some place special. I’m honored for it not only to

be my place of business, but to be able call it home! While working on the directory over the last few years, I have discovered so

many hidden treasures in our area that I would never have known existed, and it is always such a pleasure to share a new found gem within the pages. As we move into

our 4th year of publishing in Davie, Cooper City & Southwest Ranches, I am as excited now as I ever was, maybe even more so! Positive feedback has shown that not only has Sports & Activities Directory proven to be a truly valuable resource to readers, but that it continues to be beneficial to our community. Participation in recreational sports has increased as parents and children are made more aware of what’s available to them. Accomplishments made by local residents have been acknowledged and applauded through articles. Charitable events and fundraisers have been showcased and have helped increase involvement, encouraging kindness and generosity while teaching our youth positive values. Many local businesses have become a part of our directory of resources and have flourished by making their services more known. It’s amazing what’s out there right in our own backyard! Not forgetting to mention schools, almost every school is represented in each issue, giving them the opportunity to utilize space in our magazine and to let us know of some the incredible achievements made by students, teachers and staff. Some teachers have used Sports & Activities Directory as a learning tool and even had their students collaborate and write an article for their school. The students get very excited when they see the work the have done published with their name in print!

Our new sponsorship program has enabled us to further donate some of our proceeds to local schools, sports programs and charitable organizations. Thank you to Tag Gymnastics for sponsoring this issue, a donation was made to one of our schools in your honor! How can I not be excited about what another year can bring?

This October through December issue of Sports & Activities Directory is always my favorite issue to publish, not only because it marks our anniversary, but also because it is my absolute favorite time of year. While the rest of the country is gearing up for the big freeze, we in South Florida are gearing up for our slight cool down. Where else can one adorn a bathing suit and hit the beach in the middle of November? It’s a wonderful time of year to gather with family and friends and picnic in one of our beautiful parks and perhaps meander on a nature trail and appreciate Florida at it’s best. Take advantage of the cooler weather and the drop in humidity levels and maybe try a new outdoors sport or activity. If you are looking for ideas, take a look through our directory, there’s something for everyone! We have listed many fun and fabulous things to do in our events section from Halloween

extravaganzas for all ages to Holiday light up events with fun, fake snow (without frozen toes)! I hope you will take advantage of some of the offerings throughout the pages ahead and get out there and enjoy our glorious cooler season in South Florida.

Thank you to everyone who has embraced this magazine! Thank you readers, business owners, schools and city officials and everyone in between for making this magazine what it is - a win-win for all. I wish you a joyful, healthy and Happy Holiday Season!

Hello Davie, I hope you’re enjoying the many programs, activities and events that the

Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has been offering these past three months. As we approach the midpoint of the fall season and look forward to the

cooler months ahead, take a moment to explore the great programs and events the Town of Davie has to offer in this issue of the Sports and Activities Guide. Let me

highlight some of the newer programs that are now being offered. If you have a child between the ages of 6 months and 2 years old, we have an excellent Mommy and Me

year-round swim lesson program for you. It’s never too early to introduce your child to the water and teach them important safety and survival skills. This six-week program is geared

to familiarize your child with the water, teach them to float, and most importantly have fun. Is your child interested in learning how to skateboard? Staff is now working with

Amaxon SK8 Skool, who will offer lessons and clinics at the Pine Island Skate Park. Youth of all ages are invited to learn the extreme sport of skateboarding from qualified instructors who have a true passion for the sport. Looking for a program that stimulates the mind? Participate in our free bi-monthly drop in Open Play Chess program at the Pine Island Multi Purpose Center. Offered every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, chess players of all ages challenge each other to chess matches. Parents are welcome to play as well.

During the months of October, November and December, we offer some terrific special events. Stop by our monthly Concert in the Park, which is held on the second Thursday of each month at the Old Davie School. Come enjoy the food trucks, animal petting area and other activities for children. Join us for some “spooktacular” fun at Halloween

Happenings on October 25th at Robbins Lodge. Join me on Veterans Day, November 11th to honor our veterans at Veterans Park. Get your holiday shopping completed

early at the Green Fair and Holiday Craft Show held at the Bergeron Rodeo grounds on November 21st and 22nd. Finally, we wrap up the end of 2015 with our annual

Holiday Lighting of the Greens and Snow Play on December 5th at Davie Town Hall, which is decorated with thousands of holiday lights. Additionally, for the first time we will be hosting weekly holiday activities throughout

the month of December at Town Hall. Last ly, take a moment to “Like” the

Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts on Facebook and as always, see you in the Parks.

B ack in 1992, Renée Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-three years later, Renée is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need.

Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need multiplied, as did the amount of help required to accomplish such a task. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen every year. Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston and Plantation Rotary have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses such as The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals such as Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein and Robert Harms among many others, have been life savers in the 11th hour when we did not have enough food for the promised families,” said Renée.

Another unique characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who contribute. “What really

makes this work, what is really special about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools that gather what we need and volunteer their time to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at an early age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renée adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more.

This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,200 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 13 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 198 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the

Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High, Pompano High and Westglades Middle School will be fully stocked with items such as toiletries, shoes, gently used toys, clothes and books; items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families.

“What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need cash donations so we can buy the items we are short at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Herman does not comprehend

the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no”.

The Harvest Drive team continues their efforts throughout the year. They would like to give special recognition to the North Broward Preparatory Middle School for their Fundraising efforts and collections for Harvest Drive. For the past 3 years they have assisted 75 Broward County School families with food and a boutique at their Spring Into Action Drive. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renée says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.”

In addition to the businesses and individuals mentioned above, Renée and her team would also like to thank Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

• Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below.• Donate whatever amount of money or and non-perishable food you are able to give.• Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving.• Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries,

clothes, books and toys.• Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word.

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!”

Dirt kicks up from the horse’s hooves as he bucks wildly. The saddle bronc rider has only a thick rein attached to his horse’s halter to hold onto. Using one hand, he fights to stay securely seated in his saddle. Obviously a professional, the cowboy seems to be in perfect synchronization with the bronc and his objective is a fluid ride. The judges are standing by watching his every move; they score the horse’s bucking action, the cowboy’s control of the horse and the cowboy’s spurring action. To score well, the rider must maintain that action throughout the eight-second ride. While the bucking ability of the horse is quite naturally built into the scoring system, a smooth, rhythmic ride is sure to score better than a wild, uncontrolled effort. One would think this to be an event happening somewhere in Texas or Montana, but this is in fact just one of many held in our own community, at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds in Davie.

For the 7th consecutive year, the Southeastern Circuit Finals will be held here in Davie, commonly known as “Cowboy Town.” Contestants from the nine Southeastern States compete during performances of the Circuit Finals vying for over $160,000 in awards and prizes. Championship Saddles and Championship Gold and Silver buckles are for the taking, plus the chance to compete at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo held in Kissimmee, Florida. “People in South Florida will see some of the most talented rodeo performers in the country as they compete in Davie,” said Troy Weekley of Davie Pro Rodeo who sits on the governing board of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. “We believe the rodeo is an All-American sport and reflects the Cowboy Heritage that all Americans love and are proud to be part of. The buckle presentation ceremony will give the sponsors, contestants, committee and fans a chance to meet and greet, giving people the same experience as they would experience at the National Finals in Las Vegas,” said Weekley. “We want everyone to enjoy the Davie Tradition.”

The roots of the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds date back to the early 1920s, when local residents began having rodeos. Seventeen local residents constructed a pit and named it Davie Rodeo Arena. Two of the leaders were Claude

Tindall, to whom the arena was dedicated in 1977, and Percy Bergeron, who owned a tiny country grocery store in town. Official

rodeos were held twice a year until rodeo stars Troy Weekley, his brothers Dan and Wayne Weekley and Donald Parrish started Five Star

Rodeo about 20 years ago. The rodeo is considered the oldest in Florida and is part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit.Originally the center was established as a rodeo arena and it has become

a popular venue for the Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo. “We feel we have created the best western entertainment that can be seen, with over 240 sanctioned Rodeos during the time frame. We have seen top livestock as well as the top Cowboys and Cowgirls compete for National Championship points,” stated the Weekely brothers.

“This event is a huge boost for Davie,” said ‘Alligator’ Ron Bergeron, a sponsor and member of the rodeo committee. “Not only is it one of the largest rodeo championships in the country that brings in thousands of people to have fun and spend money, but it’s a great showcase for the Town’s history. Over time we have preserved a lot of the same culture and heritage that was present during the very first rodeo over 75 years ago and that’s worth celebrating,” said Bergeron, a professional rodeo performer himself who has qualified and competed in the Southeast Circuit Finals five times in his career.

This year’s event will be held November 12th, 13th, and 14th at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds located at 4271 Davie Road. Gates open at 6:00pm each of the three nights, with performances starting at 7:30pm. Over 15,000 fans congregate in the Town of Davie and surrounding areas during this three-day event. This is truly an All American Sport and reflects the Cowboy Heritage that all Americans love and are proud to be a part of.

In 2008, Marissa and Michael Zoldan bought TAG USA Gymnastics and

transformed it into the largest and most successful girls and boys gymnastics program in South Florida.

“TAG USA’s popularity comes from how we establish a personal communication with every family and we get to know the needs of every

child. The organized and safe way we conduct recreational classes are very organized, and how we invest in a unique experience for every athlete,” explains TAG USA’s owner Marissa Zoldan.

Michael Zoldan says that TAG USA’s success is due to the “obvious big differences in our programs from other gymnastics programs.” TAG USA’s 40,000 square foot facility is the largest in the area, and along with space, there is an extraordinary amount of equipment. “Our athletes do not share floor space or have to wait in lines because of what we have invested in extra equipment and spacing of the gym.” Michael adds, “We also invest in managers and directors who monitor class lesson plans and rotations, making sure that each class is conducted safely and efficiently.” The success of TAG USA’s gymnastics is evident by the popularity of their many preschool, girls and boys gymnastics, aftercare and camp programs.

Families are welcome to begin their TAG USA experience with a FREE Baby Tumblers class for newborns and moms. The next step up is the Preschool Gymnastics class teaching basic tumbling, beam walking, and bar

skills. By age five, a boy or girl athlete will move to the beginner, intermediate, or

advanced classes. All classes are taught by a lesson plan that allows athletes to gain safe new skills in step-by-step progressions.

TAG USA Gymnastics is known as the “Home of the Champions” as their athletes have five NATIONAL CHAMPIONS since 2013. No other gym in the region has National Champs in boys gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and three in trampoline & tumbling. Besides National Champs, TAG USA has had two athletes named to the National Team and many Regional and State gymnastics champions. Since 2009, TAG USA has also won nine team State Championships in boys and girls gymnastics…something no other gym has accomplished.

One of the unique experiences that members of TAG USA enjoy are the famous guest Olympian visits to the gym. TAG USA is also known as a “Second Home to Olympians.” Famous Olympians that have visited include: Aly Raisman, Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin, Jordyn Wieber, Samantha Peszek, Jonathan Horton, and Sam Mikulak. TAG USA wants their young athletes to get to know famous Olympians who share their similar interests. Marissa explains that team members, class athletes, and campers realize that these famous Olympians also trained hard, have had their ups and downs, and have balanced school work with their athletic experiences. Marissa states, “Meeting an Olympian creates personal bonds for our young athletes and a memory that lasts forever.” It is these special experiences that helps make TAG USA very unique.

TAG USA gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in the heart of Weston. Most classes are available Monday through Fridays and Saturdays at multiple times; please call TAG USA at 954-384-9191 to register for available classes. Classes are grouped into ten week sessions with the most competitive prices.

The Davie United Sharks U13 Girls Blue kicked off the new soccer season in style over Labor Day weekend, winning their first championship of the season. The team has been practicing hard since the beginning of August in preparation for the tournament and began the new season where they left off the previous one, as champions!

With the whole team returning and the addition of three new players it is no surprise that the Sharks have made an impressive start to the new season. Most of the girls have been playing together for five years so their team spirit and camaraderie is what really separates these young Sharks from the rest.

12-year-old goalkeeper and Florida Olympic Development Program member Skylah Klein commented, “This past weekend was a great way to start the new season. We took it one game at a time, and in the end we earned our first championship trophy for the season. This weekend took all 18 players as well as our two coaches. We have been training since August and we will continue to work harder and harder as a team.” She continued, “Our team is a very unique group of girls. We are all extremely close on and off of the soccer field. We are always there for one another and always have each other’s backs. My teammates are not just teammates; they are my best friends but more importantly my family/my sisters. I really enjoy being on this team and I’m thankful that I have the opportunity to do it with the people I love most.”

The young girls work tirelessly on the soccer field and in the classroom maintaining their focus on being not only great soccer players, but also great students and wonderful community members.

Team mum, Teresa Thomas had this to say about the young Sharks. “The Davie United U13 Girls are 18 exceptional young ladies on and off the field. They are phenomenal students and athletes. They know only one speed and that is full speed. They play a beautiful game of soccer. As elegant as they are on the field, they are equally as tough!”

With continued hard work and commitment, these young Sharks are in for a great season and have set their sights on being State Champions come the end of May.

With a rigorous tournament and travel schedule on the horizon, including trips to North Carolina, Disney and State Cup in the spring, this talented group of young girls is constantly fundraising and looking for sponsors. If you are interested in sponsoring the team then please contact [email protected]. You can also donate to the teams GoFundMe account at http://www.gofundme.com/z96p86pc.

More than 2,100 amateur Jewish athletes from 36 countries participated in the 2015 European Maccabi Games in Berlin, Germany this past summer. During the 8-day Olympics-style competition, they had an opportunity to test their strength and endurance while they created long-lasting friendships. Many of the athletes were from West Broward.

Team USA consisted of 168 athletes, primarily between 15 and 25 years old. They participated on 20 teams and competed in 14 sports: Badminton, Basketball, Bridge, Chess, Equestrian-Dressage, Fencing, Field Hockey, Golf, Half Marathon, Soccer, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Water Polo.

Some of the USA team members from the area included: • Open Men’s Basketball: Ross Udine, Weston• Youth Men’s Soccer: Jake Fuhrman and Ilan Naibryf, Weston• Junior Boys’ Basketball: Harrison Arnberg and Michael Egozi, Weston• Junior Boys’ Swimming: Elad Fraiman, Davie• Open Men’s Water Polo: Tomas Tussie, Weston

The games, however, were about much more than just athletics. They also stood for tolerance and world peace and against anti-Semitism and racism. They were filled with emotion and symbolism. It was no coincidence that the opening ceremonies took place in Berlin’s Olympic Park, which was built for the 1936 Olympics, when Jewish athletes were excluded from participating. Thts same Olympics also served as a showcase for Hitler’s rise to power in Germany.

Jake Fuhrman was captain of the USA Youth Men’s Soccer team. He is currently a senior at Cypress Bay High School. Since his freshman year, he has been a starter on the boys’ soccer team, which was ranked best in the state in 2013 and 2015. Some of Fuhrman’s soccer accolades include All County Soccer (2015) and Boys All County Soccer (2013). He is hoping to play soccer at the college level.

In Berlin, his team’s roster consisted of 16 players, including Ilan Naibryf of Weston. After beating Germany, the team lost in the Bronze Medal Match to Sweden (1-0).

“I’ve been lucky enough to play soccer in roughly ten different states around the USA, participating in showcases, camps and league games, but nothing compares to this,” said Fuhrman. “This definitely was the experience of a lifetime. It was an amazing opportunity

to represent my country and travel the world at the same time. It was interesting seeing the different styles of play from other countries. I made many new friends and we played at one of the best facilities in the world against teams from all over Europe.”

Ross Udine played on the USA Open Men’s Basketball team. Udine is currently a sophomore at New York University, where he plays point guard for the men’s basketball team. In 2014, he graduated from Cypress Bay High School, where he helped lead the Lightning Boys Basketball team to three district championships. As a senior, he was named First Team All-County and Third Team All-State; selected to the Dade/Broward All-Star Game and the Big Eight All-Tournament Team.

In Berlin, he was part of a 12-man team that included a few pros and several high-level college players. Although they were only together a couple of weeks, Udine says that the team really bonded. The squad posted a 4-1 record and came away with the Silver Medal after falling to Russia in the Gold Medal Game.

“Playing basketball for the USA Maccabi Team was an absolutely remarkable experience,” said Udine. “To be able to represent your country and religion in such an iconic and historical event was a blessing. Being invited to participate in these games, especially in a place so historically significant to the Jewish people as Berlin, was an honor and I am so thankful for the opportunity. I had an amazing time with my teammates, coaches and family. Being in Germany with all of these amazing people from different countries was truly a life-changing experience that I will never forget.”

Harrison Arnberg and Michael Egozi played on the Junior Boys’ Basketball team, which beat Israel in the Gold medal game (83-70). “The games were an all around amazing experience, between meeting people from other countries and competing in international basketball,” said Arnberg, who is a sophomore at American Heritage School. “We practiced at the Charlottenberg Sporthalle,” said Egozi, who is a sophomore at Pine Crest School. “We stood at center court with our eyes closed and imagined what it would feel like to have returned to Germany in triumph and have a Gold medal placed around our necks.”

Two other local athletes also played well. Tomas Tussie played on the Open Men’s Water Polo team, which beat Germany (16-3) in the Bronze Medal game. Elad Fraiman was a member of the Junior Boys’ Swimming team. He won a Gold medal in the 200m Medley; Silver medal in the 100m Backstroke; and Bronze medal in the 50m Breaststroke.

There is only one velodrome in Florida and it is right here in Broward County. Located at Brian Piccolo Park, the facility attracts more than 3,500 athletes annually and is used for both competitive and recreational cycling, as well as in-line skating. It also hosts a variety of races for riders of all ages and abilities.

The velodrome opened in March 1992 and hosted its first major race a year later. It is a banked oval track for bicycle racing. The competitive track is 333.3 meters long with maximum banking of approximately 30 degrees at the apex of each turn. The recreational track is 200 meters long and has a maximum 10-degree banking at each end. Bright lights allow cyclists to ride safely after dark.

“Riding on a velodrome gives you a sense of speed, safety, and exhilaration,” said Carl Sundquist, an accomplished rider who works for the Florida Velodrome Association. “Velodromes were created as racing venues. If you ride with a group on the velodrome, your sense of speed and the visceral feeling of going faster than you felt possible will make you feel exalted. Because they are designed exclusively for use by bicycles, you can focus on your riding with none of the concerns of riding on city streets.”

Riders must use the proper bikes for velodrome cycling. Since the bikes do not have multiple gears or brakes, they help maximize speed, reduce weight, and avoid sudden braking. They are available for rent at the facility, along with other necessary equipment. Helmets are also required when riding the track. Cyclists with other types of bikes can use the Brian Piccolo Road Course, which is adjacent to the velodrome and has a paved course with 500 and 800-meter loops.

Anyone can ride at the velodrome Monday to Friday, from 3:15pm to 9:45pm; Saturday, from 8am to 9:45pm; and Sunday/holidays, from 8am to 7:30pm. Several types of riders use the facility. Some enjoy traditional bicycle racing, while others are triathletes or part of the “fixie” group that rides single speed, fixed gear bicycles. Many riders also use the velodrome for easy riding at less than race speeds and without any racing interests, because it is a safe place to ride. On Monday nights, from 6:30pm to 9pm, weather permitting, new riders can learn the basics of how to ride comfortably on the track, as well as how to ride with other riders on the track.

From November to March, the velodrome will host several races. The Florida Junior State Championships (ages 10-18) will be held November 14-15. The fall racing series will be held on Saturday afternoons, at 5pm, on November 7, 14, 21, and at 4pm on December 5 and 12. The winter racing series, which begins in January, will also be held on Saturdays. Racing is broken down into three groups based on relative experience and fitness so new riders do not have to feel intimidated by competing with experienced, highly fit riders. All of the Saturday race series will have three races for each of the three groups. Riders typically ride all three of the races in their group.

There is a family atmosphere at the races. Riders are very supportive of each other, and friends and families love to watch. “A velodrome is unique in bicycle

racing,” said Sundquist. “In a road race or mountain bike race, spectators can only see the riders flash by for a second or two. In the velodrome, every seat and viewing point shows the entire track, so the spectators’ viewing experience includes non-stop action.”

Sundquist is one of the frequent riders at the velodrome. Since he started racing in 1982, he has been second in the world championships, a member of the 1988 and 1992 Olympic teams, and won 18 national championships. “At age 54, I am still racing and can’t see stopping,” said Sundquist. “There is so much I love about riding, including the sense of freedom, accomplishment and competition. I feel connected to my surroundings. I love how I feel when I am worn out after a good hard ride.”

Sundquist says he loves the intensity of racing at the velodrome. “Track racing condenses the same intensity of races like the Tour de France into much shorter races,” said Sundquist. “It is fantastic for both rider and spectator. I love the Velodrome!”

There is a $5 fee to use the Velodrome. Except for special events, there is no charge to use the Road Course. The park’s regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee applies. For information, call (954) 357-5160.

The Truth About Strength Training

There are quite a few myths out there about strength training. Some with roots going back as far as 40-50 years. As the owner of Power Sports Academy (South Florida’s Strongest Gym), 2014 world champion bench presser, and strength and conditioning coach of over 15 years, I feel like I am qualified to help debunk 3 of the most common strength training myths.

Myth #1: Strength training will make you slow. Think about this. Sprinters (the fastest people in the world) spend nearly just as much time in the weight room as they do on the track. That, plus muscles produce force. Stronger muscles produce greater force. Training should reflect the goal of the athlete. Great speed requires great strength. All sports occur in acceleration, a special phase in the speed spectrum. Acceleration is dictated by joint and body angles and how forcefully the athlete can push off each step. We have to remember that force x mass = acceleration. Improvements in force application relative to body weight results in running faster, every time.

Myth #2: Strength training will stunt a child’s growth. This is a sensitive subject, rightfully so. As a parent, I understand, which is why I feel it is imperative that young athletes in particular are receiving the right coaching from the start. In the proper setting, there is zero chance of stunting one’s growth. Many kids entering high school aren’t strong enough or prepared to begin weight lifting because of lack of experience. NO ONE of any age should be introduced to a barbell before a simple, strategic progression is achieved. That being said, we have 9 year olds with 2 years training experience, superior strength, and the results show on the field of play. Our youth athletes are further along from a

strength-training standpoint than the majority of 9th graders entering high school. Strong kids are better and safer. Education is the key.

Myth #3: Strength training will make you big and bulky. It’s hard to believe that people actually still think this. The old thinking that “lightweight / high reps” will magically achieve the TONED look, is gone, thankfully. Your muscles aren’t programmed to know the difference between 5 reps or 15 reps. It’s really simple. Resistance training causes damage to muscle fibers. With proper rest and nutrition the muscles adapt by growing back bigger and stronger. To continue this adaptation process you must progress, you know, get stronger. We all have a certain size frame and different growth potential. Nobody gets big by accident. If you are getting bigger than you’d like, it’s probably your diet not you’re training. One simply needs to find the style of training to reach your goals. A good coach can make it much easier.

Hopefully this helped some of you. We pride ourselves on bringing the highest level of coaching to our clients. Check us out on facebook.com/powersportsacademy and instagram@powersportsacademy.

Three fourth grade students at University School of Nova Southeastern - Ava Pinkiert, Lindsey Rubinger and Olivia Rosen - are passionate about helping others. Two years ago, the friends turned a class project into an opportunity to give back to their community and make the world a little sweeter.

It all started when the girls were together in Alison Dolberg’s second grade social studies class. Dolberg asked the kids to form groups and develop a “business plan” that included something they could sell to make money for a charity. They decided to sell cupcakes and named their “company” C-Sweets. Both the girls and Dolberg liked the idea so much that they decided to implement the plan “in real life.” “It is important to give back,” said Ava. “I am lucky and I want to help others.” Olivia agreed. “I am thankful and I want to help others to have a good life and have what I have.”

One day after school, the girls spent two hours selling cupcakes and water to their neighbors and raised $167. Since all of them love animals, they agreed to donate the money to the animals at the Humane Society of Broward County. They delivered the money in person and got a tour of the facilities so they could see how their donation would benefit the animals.

Eager to make a difference again, the girls recently got together to brainstorm their next fundraising effort. In keeping with the company name, “C-Sweets,” they agreed to sell Oreo cookies and lemonade. Since they wanted the money to benefit kids their own age, they decided to donate the profits to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. They set up a neighborhood stand and raised over $200.

“The best part of the donation is knowing that the money is going to a good cause,” said Lindsey. “The children will benefit from the money we raised. It will help make their stay more pleasant in the hospital.”

When the girls delivered the money to the hospital, they received a personal tour from Kevin Janser, Sr. Vice President and Chief Development Officer, and Jackie Johnstone, Director of Annual Giving. They viewed the facilities and learned about the hospital’s services. They heard stories about some of the kids, including one about a girl who loves the color pink and was living at the hospital awaiting a new heart. They met Nutmeg, the hospital service dog, and Lotsy Dotsie, the clown. By the time they left, they had a good understanding of how their money would impact the hospital and its patients.

“The girls were very affected by this visit and were happy to know they did something good,” said Gayle Rosen, Olivia’s mom. “They understand that no matter the amount of the donation, it is more important to develop an early passion for giving back. They now have an even greater desire to do more.”

On the way home from Joe DiMaggio, the girls decided that they wanted to implement a fundraiser every year. They have already been discussing ideas for their next project, which might include selling donuts. Their goal is to make more than the previous year, which they have been able to do since they started. Part of the plan includes more advertising. Although the girls are too young to know what they want to do when they get older, they all agree that they will pursue careers that help people.

SACRED LOMI® MASSAGE F r o m t h e I s l a n d s o f H a w a i i

What is Lomi Massage?Lomi Lomi is an ancient and beautiful massage modality whose origins come from

the islands of Hawaii. Simply put, Lomi Lomi means to “massage” or “knead”. A unique and revitalizing experience, ancient Lomi has been handed down from the “Kahunas”, or master Shamans of Hawaii. Believing that “dis-ease” can block energy flow, traditional Lomi facilitates deep release, not only from muscle tension, but from limiting thoughts and beliefs as well. Sacred Lomi® promotes restorative healing for the whole self in a very individualized and therapeutic session. What should I expect from a Lomi Massage?

Lomi Lomi is an incredible whole body experience which maneuvers around the entire individual at once, utilizing forearms, elbows and hands. Excellent pressure combined with long, flowing strokes that reach from head to toe in continuous, rhythmic movements, embrace both the top and underside of the body. This strong and powerful dance allows the recipient to completely “let go” and “receive”, gently provoking the mind and body to surrender. The result is increased energy flow, restorative balance and complete harmony. Sacred Lomi® addresses the whole being; physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Will Lomi address my specific pains?

Lomi Lomi is one of the most individualized and intimate modalities of massage therapy. A soothing environment allows the recipient to freely discuss their appropriate history, particular areas of concern and personal comfort level as it relates to massage therapy. Your therapist will adjust pressure and technique to meet your individual needs and your treatment will be uniquely tailored to address your specific reasons for scheduling a Lomi massage. No two experiences will ever be identical. This modality promotes transformative healing; reducing pain, improving discomfort, releasing tension and nurturing your body and mind.

How long does a traditional Lomi massage take? All sessions incorporate hot stones, warm towels, aromatherapy, scalp massage

and reflexology on a comfortable heated table. The treatments are typically 60, 90 and 120 minutes in length. It is very rare for Lomi by Lori to accomplish a traditional, therapeutic Sacred Lomi® massage in 60 minutes, therefore she recommends your initial visit to be at least 90 minutes. Is Lomi recognized by a Certification Board? Why don’t more massage therapists specialize in Sacred Lomi® Massage?

Sacred Lomi® courses were developed by Tom Cochran and Donna Jason as a healing art designed to empower the individual student to heal themselves first and then offer that healing to others. Approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a Continuing Education Approved Provider, Sacred Lomi® offers basic workshops coupled with advanced training retreats. Practicing and receiving Lomi each day, the student experiences first hand the spirit of “aloha”. This relatively small family of advanced Sacred Lomi® practitioners have built a strong “Ohana”. Advanced training deepens the love for this ancient art. The commitment for higher knowledge and growth requires time, travel, and monetary consideration.

Lori is a nationally certified, licensed massage therapist who has practiced therapeutic massage in South Florida since 2001. Lori earned her license from Educating Hands School of Massage in Miami, considered to be one of the top “Ten Best Places to Study Massage Therapy in North America”. Three years ago, Lori attended a basic Sacred Lomi® massage CEU workshop and it had a profound impact on her practice. She has since attended various advanced trainings in Sacred Lomi® and will be studying in Hawaii this spring. She passionately incorporates her knowledge and skills into her practice and into her life.

The future of emergency care has arrived in South Broward County with the recent opening of Florida Medical Center’s fi rst freestanding Emergency Center. Residents of Davie and the surrounding communities now have a comfortable and convenient place to go for their emergency care needs – 24/7, 365 days a year.

The new Emergency Center, just south of I-595 and west of Nob Hill Road next to Imperial Electric and Lighting, is a special extension of Florida Medical Center. “The health of our community and increasing access to state-of-the-art care has always been our number one priority,” said Gabrielle Finley-Hazle, chief executive offi cer of Florida Medical Center. “In furthering our vision to transform healthcare delivery, now is the time to rethink emergency care.”

The Emergency Center is fully equipped and staffed to treat emergent conditions, such as lacerations, orthopedic and sports injuries, dehydration, abdominal pain, respiratory problems, head injuries, walk-in strokes and chest pain. Open 24/7, the center offers the high quality care of a hospital-based ER in a comfortable atmosphere and in a convenient location. Patients have access to board certified emergency medicine physicians and registered nurses on Florida Medical Center’s medical staff.

“We’re working closely with Emergency Medical Services to provide the area with a new type of emergency care,” said Finley-Hazle. “If you or a loved one is ever in need of emergency services, you can trust that our highly skilled clinicians are here to provide you with excellent medical care with the utmost compassion and respect.”

In addition the Emergency Center will offer the following• Adult and walk-in pediatric care • Ambulance access• Laboratory and pharmacy services• Outpatient diagnostics, including advanced CT scan, X-ray and ultrasound imaging • Respiratory care

The 13,626-square-foot center houses 11 treatment rooms on the fi rst fl oor. Each of the rooms is named after a particular community in the area, further reinforcing the center’s goal to provide neighborhood-centered care. The second fl oor of the building houses the Imaging Center of West Broward, an expansion of the center in Sunrise, which will offer CAT scans and coronary computed tomography angiograms (CTAs).

Patients also have the option of holding their place in line at the Emergency Center by going to www.ERcare247.com and signing in through a service called InQuickER. This gives them the ability to wait in the comfort of their homes and visit the center at a scheduled time.

For over 40 years, Florida Medical Center has provided high quality care for the community. Last year, the hospital was named among the top 10% in nation for cardiology services by Healthgrades and received the highest distinction for stroke care from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Quality Achievement Award.

The Emergency Center is located at 10230 W. State Road 84 in Davie. For more information, please visit www.ERcare247.com. To receive a free thermometer, call 1-866-498 LIFE (5433). If you have a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

FLORIDA MEDICAL CENTER BRINGS HIGH LEVEL EMERGENCY CARE TO SOUTH BROWARD COUNTY

Recently, our office has been bombarded by parents calling to have their children treated for a video game addiction. One parent reported that her preadolescent son was playing at least 8 hours per day, often sneaking out of bed in an attempt to access the games and then playing through the night. Another father shared that his son had stolen his credit card to purchase hundreds of dollars of virtual products for his game. Although parents tell us they have attempted to restrict gaming time, often the children and adolescents have found creative ways to sneak gaming or have resorted to using aggression and threats in order to maintain game play.

Currently, internet gaming disorder is not a diagnosable condition. Researchers have argued for the inclusion of Internet Addiction. They describe this condition as 1) excessive use, 2) withdrawal when the computer is inaccessible, 3) the need for more hours of use, and 4) negative consequences (e.g., lying, stealing, social isolation, etc.) (DSM-V, Block, 2008).

In 2013 the American Academy of Pediatrics cited shocking statistics from a 2010 Kaiser Family Foundation study: “The average 8- to 10-year-old spends nearly eight hours a day with a variety of different media, and older children and teenagers spend more than 11 hours per day.” The Academy recommends that older children and teenagers should spend two hours or less per day with entertainment media. They continue to recommend that it is preferable to spend their free time playing outdoors, reading, doing hobbies and exercising their imagination. They concluded that heavy

use of electronic media can have significant negative effects on children’s behavior, health and school performance. Brody, J. (2015, July 6). Screen Addiction Is Taking A Toll On Children. The New York Times. How do you know if your child has a problem?

If your child or adolescent’s gaming or internet use is significantly impairing academic, social, or occupational functioning, your child should be evaluated by a mental health professional with experience in this area. This evaluation can help to identify the function of the internet/gaming behavior, and can provide you and your family with a plan to correct and manage the behavior. For example, what function does the gaming serve for the child? The child may be experiencing social anxiety, and is using the game to avoid social interactions or relationships. He or she may also be trying to avoid responsibilities, such as homework due to learning difficulties. Sometimes, obsessive video game playing may represent a restricted interest that is part of an autism spectrum disorder. If warranted, a full psychological evaluation can help your family to better understand your child’s gaming.

Our office has become increasingly familiar with this growing problem. The first step in helping your child is to be aware of the problem. If you are reading this it is likely that you have concerns, difficulties or interest in the area of gaming addition. If we can help, please do not hesitate to reach out. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. Please email me at [email protected].

Eating a nourishing meal is something that many of us take for granted. Did you know that in South Florida, nearly one million people struggle with hunger, one in four children go to bed hungry and one in seven seniors face the choice between paying rent, buying medication

or eating a healthy meal?A critical component of a high-quality life is

good health, which starts with eating right. Unfortunately, lack of access to healthy and fresh foods is a very real problem that exists right here in our own backyard. Lack

of food can lead to serious problems. In children, it can lead to behavioral issues and decreased performance in school, as well as immediate and long-term health complications including diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. For seniors, lack of food and poor nutrition can lead to memory loss and increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and kidney failure. In addition, seniors living on a fixed income are often forced to make the choice between vital medications and groceries.

For the third year in a row, Sage Dental, formerly Gentle Dental Group is teaming up with Feeding South Florida to help make a difference in the lives of those who struggle to put food on the table. Having collected a combined total of 5,700 pounds of food in past year’s food drives, Sage Dental is now on a mission to collect even more food this year for South Floridians in need. From October 12th through November 21th, Sage Dental will be collecting non-perishable food items at all of its 30 South Florida dental offices. All of the food collected will

be donated to Feeding South Florida for distribution within South Florida communities to families and individuals in need, food pantries, youth programs, senior centers and direct service programs.

“We are excited to team up with Feeding South Florida for our third annual Sage Dental Food Drive to help our local communities in need,” explains Tom Montefinese, Vice President of Operations, “We want to do our part in the effort to end hunger in South Florida.”

Together with Feeding South Florida and sponsors SFL-TV (CW 19), WSVN-TV (FOX 7), WPBF-TV (ABC 25), Palm Beach Radio Broadcasting (WRMF-FM 97.9, WMBX-FM 102.3, WIRK-FM 103.1, WEAT 107.9, BEATZ 96.3, WFTL 850, WMEN 640), Lifestyle Media Group, Sports & Activities Directories, Treasure Coast Newspaper/TCPalm.com and YOU, Sage Dental wants to help end hunger in the South Florida community.

The time of year is coming when we begin to run around frantically preparing for the holidays. We rush to prep our Thanksgiving meals, make arrangements for travel and we start to do our Hanukkah

shopping, making lists of the items we need to buy for family, friends, co-workers and other important people in our lives. In the chaos that surrounds the holidays in all our preparations we often forget to stop and teach our children about the true meaning of this time of year.

What lessons do we want our children to learn about the meaning of these holidays? Are we teaching them history and traditions or that this time of year is all about stress in a mad rush to get things done? It is important for all of us to stop for a moment and reflect on this question. A good way to gauge how your child views this time of year and what it is all about is to ask them and see how they answer.

In our focus to please those around us by preparing big elaborate meals, waiting in long lines at stores, wrapping gifts, writing cards and dealing with relatives, our tempers begin to flair and our patience becomes short. At the time of year that is supposed to be about giving, caring and kindness to others, we become the least understanding to our loved ones. We seem

to remember to give to charities and help those in need but tend to neglect those closest to us.

There is a Jewish Value that is commonly found to be important in all religions, to model for our children, called Shalom Bayit. Shalom Bayit is about creating a “peaceful home.” While obviously giving to others and being kind to others is important and necessary, it is just as important not to neglect those closest to us that are not strangers. Peace needs to start in the home. Our families are the people we often take for granted. Our friends, relatives, our spouses and our children, the reasons why we are rushing and planning and doing in the first place, we end up putting last on our list of importance. We become short-tempered with them and our time for them becomes limited while we rush about trying to get things done.

However, the best gift we can give our loved ones is time. They want our attention, an ear that is truly listening and a chance to spend some quality time together. Quality time is meaningful time, not time spent running around a mall, the grocery store or doing chores.

Take the time to stop and reflect how you can create meaningful time with your loved ones during this season of rushing. Stop and remember why we celebrate these holidays with loved ones in the first place. If you do this, and reprioritize the way you are spending your time, you will begin to see the holidays as less overwhelming and instead look forward to them as a time to bring joy and peace into your heart and into your home.

Pioneer science students are off to a great start. In an effort for students to retain critical information necessary for success on the 8th grade FCAT, this year Pioneer students will construct and develop cumulative notebooks of critical science content in grades 6, 7 and 8th. These notebooks will be retained at Pioneer and passed on to the child’s next grade level teacher so that they can be used as study tools for the exam at the end of 8th grade. Despite some myths that the FCAT is “gone,” Science FCAT remains for the 2015-2016 school year. Please note, each teacher may use a different format to retain information, (binder, composition book, etc.,) however, all content is based on the Sunshine State Standards tested by the exam. This notebook may also be separate and in addition to a “day to day folder” many students use to keep assignments organized. Contact your child’s science teacher(s) if you have questions.

In 2013, Pioneer students in 7th grade built SeaPerch remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) as part of a STEM project and were featured in South Florida Parenting Magazine and the Pioneer Pages. This year, in lieu of a science fair project, Mr. Martin’s 8th grade physical science students will follow suit. This is an exciting opportunity to involve students in hands-on experiential learning.

More information will be forthcoming on the Pioneer Middle website if you would like to help out (we will need some mechanical parts)! In the meantime, visit SeaPerch.org for details and/or email [email protected] for details.

Speaking of Science Fair, this is the time of year your child may be selecting a long-term project to work on. This is an effort to enrich students’ understanding of the science process and explore areas of interest. It is important that parents only assist in supervising safety issues or address the possible purchasing of materials. All projects must be parent/guardian approved. The Science Fair coordinator for Pioneer is Mrs. Jerilyn Habenicht. If you have any questions specific to the fair you may contact her via the Pioneer Website.

In addition, Mr. Martin has been working on a PhD dissertation project that will measure middle school students’ perceptions and knowledge of sharks through an after-school program. As of right now, the project is pending Florida Atlantic University approval and more details will be forthcoming. One of the featured activities involves a field study shark-tagging trip with the University of Miami RJDunlap Conservation program. More information about this exciting opportunity can be found at https://rjd.miami.edu/education.

A World of Knowledge celebrates the highly anticipated GRAND OPENING of the DAVIE CAMPUS. The school, located at 6700 Griffin Road next to the Davie School Museum, is now ENROLLING ages 6 months – VPK. We are excited to welcome you to our new campus. Our success for over 11 years is based on our teaching styles, low ratios, staff dedication and unique lessons with multicultural themes and concepts. Character education, values and etiquette are also essential components of our curriculum. Research shows that 95% of a child’s brain is developed by the age of five and we want to help stimulate and develop the child at an early age.

Students graduating from A World of Knowledge Learning Center score high in initial testing in schools and 95% of our VPK students READ before entering kindergarten

We educate close to 100 VPK students each year. Letter and sound recognition and higher order critical thinking skills are introduced in a fun, interactive and engaging way. The school is recognized as the favorite for many educators and parents in the area and has gained a reputation of “#1 choice for QUALITY in Early Learning.”

“Our parents are our best representatives and I love when they attribute the success of their children to the fundamentals they received at our center. Many of our students

receive perfect scores in Reading and Math because of how they were introduced to the subject matter at our school,” said Elizabeth Gonzalez, Director. “In addition, principals and teachers from local schools compliment our students and their personal achievement in both, social and academic levels.”

A World of Knowledge offers an accelerated learning program, which allows children to explore everyday concepts at their own pace, in a fun and interactive way. Understanding that children have different learning abilities, we created a unique curriculum concept that encompasses all areas of learning using multiple teaching methods. Through music and engaging activities, the children will explore new concepts that will help guide them to become independent learners. Many enter our center with no knowledge of print and speak other languages and are soon able to soar in all areas of development.

Gonzalez has great passion for her school and states, “Our goal is to provide a safe and nurturing place for young children to think, explore and create. For over 11 years we have been successful in helping children grow academically and socially.”

Come visit our multicultural world of learning. Call (954) 430-7707 or (954) 533-2844. Or visit www.worldofknowledgekids.com. Registration is now open at the Davie Campus.

Famingo Elementary is diving into a learning adventure this school year through continuing to create 21st century learners! Our students enjoy being immersed in an academic learning environment that is interactive, exciting, challenging, and engaging. The Flamingo students truly enjoy working together in groups and collaborating with one another while utilizing an assortment of learning strategies. Our teachers model the use of a variety of multi-media resources to entice the learning palette of their students. Through the use Promethean boards, laptops, and I-Pads, students are able to access many types of websites, wikis, blogs, and software programs to support their leaning goals.

The students at Flamingo are becoming experts in using a variety of sources to support their answers through making text connections. It has become a daily practice in our classrooms to see group discussions and to hear responsible talk question stems being used during these discussions. The students know how important it is to go back and prove their answers with information from the text. These group discussions and deep conversations can be heard across all grade levels! At Flamingo, we set high expectations for our students and they always rise to the challenge. It is evident when walking through the classrooms that the students are so proud of themselves and how they have learned to reflect on their thinking and share feedback with their fellow peers.

The daily practices that the Flamingo students carry out are preparing them for future learning and for a world where communication and technology is a driving force in education. We are living in a world where informational text is the key to learning about important topics, current events, or understanding how things work, and our

students are making the connections between text and the real world. Through the practice of participating in classroom discussions and group collaboration with the support of technology, our students are developing critical thinking skills and understanding the process of research, debate, and citation of sources through finding text evidence.

Our classrooms are able to support our vision and school goals for technology use and 21st century learning, thanks to the SMART initiative and the funding Flamingo received through the passing of the General Obligation Bond. The benefits to be seen on campus are updated desktop computers in the primary classrooms, a brand new computer lab with 22 desktop computers, and laptop carts in the intermediate classrooms, with a brand new laptop for every student! The teachers, students, parents, and community are thrilled with the updates and new purchases to help support student learning. In addition, the students can’t wait to begin gaining new knowledge through the support of their very own laptop! Flamingo Elementary is excited for the 2015-2016 school year and is looking forward to reaching all students’ learning styles through technology and the use of effective teaching strategies that engage all learners in critical thinking.

ON THE TRAIL TO SUCCESS AT FOX TRAIL ELEMENTARY

This year’s theme at Fox Trail Elementary is “On the Trail to Success.” A large part of the reason that Fox Trail students feel successful is that even though Fox Trail is one of the largest elementary schools in Broward County, it has the feel of a small community. Maddox, a fifth-grader, says that, “every classroom is a house, each house is part of a grade level neighborhood, and all the grades together create a community.” Leading the trail to success is the fifth grade class. Fifth grade students are the “top bananas” at Fox Trail. The majority of fifth-graders have been at the school since kindergarten. Year after year, the students help build the school community, and by fifth grade, the students take on the responsibility of being role models for the other students at the school. Fifth-graders accept duties and responsibilities, which help keep the Fox Trail community thriving.

Students want their school to be safe and inviting. The fifth-graders at Fox Trail handle safety patrol duties and are seen as great role models by the younger students. Greeting everyone while they stand at their posts, escorting younger kids to class, and reminding students to walk in a line properly are some of the duties that the Safety Patrols perform to help keep Fox Trail Elementary a safe and better community.

An important need of every community is strong leaders. Fifth grade Student Council and its officers understand the needs of the students and work to help students succeed. Mrs. Pearsall, who assists with Student Council, says that, “the general student body looks up to them because they are always trying to come up with new ways to help Fox Trail.” Some examples of what they do to help people in need are: organize the Harvest Drive to collect food and supplies, collect

toys for the Toy Drive during holiday time, sell Candy Grams in order to raise money for school supplies and promote Red Ribbon Week for drug abuse awareness. Seeing great leaders do good deeds inspires younger students to follow in their footsteps.

Another inspirational role is the daily operation of the WFTN news; where the fifth-graders step into their roles as anchors, weather reporters, and camera operators. The whole student body gets the daily news from the students. The news crew reports that they become rock stars on campus since everyone recognizes them. Being so visible sets good examples for the other kids.

Since members of the fifth grade class participate in so many activities, such as clubs, become leaders in concert performances, anchor the news, lead Student Council and help keep Fox Trail safe, they are looked up to and respected by the entire student body. Griffin Elementary is making headlines in Broward County by using 21st Century technology to find solutions to current environmental challenges. Last school year, Griffin students participated in an international project sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation. This program is a three-year grant through the International Environment Program Partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and EPA Taiwan (EPAT). This program provides high-quality collaborative educational experiences for our students to connect with students in Taiwan. Participating teachers received rigorous professional development taught them the basics of project-based learning (PBL) and prepared them for this international collaboration using the iEARN web-based platform.

In our first year, a second grade classroom from our school was paired up with a sister school in Taiwan. Both schools needed to select an environmental problem in their area that they could investigate and find alternative solutions. Our sister school in Taiwan selected recycling as their environmental pathway, and Griffin students selected water usage and conservation as our pathway. Our students decided on the following essential question: “How can we reduce and reuse water, so we do not run out?” Students conducted research on the water cycle, water usage, fresh and brackish water ecosystems, and how to reduce and reuse water.

We visited the facilities of the Cooper City Water Plant where students learned of the efforts put forth by our city to ensure our water is clean and safe to drink. Students

We are gearing up for another exciting year here at The Ridge! We always begin our school year by reflecting on the previous year to celebrate the successes of our teachers and students. It is no surprise that Indian Ridge continues to excel!

The early results from the 2014-2015 school year are in and they look better than ever! We had a whopping 134 students take the Honors Algebra and Geometry End of Course Assessment in May, and we are pleased to announce that each and every one of them passed. That’s 100% of our students passing the rigorous state tests!

Congratulations to our wonderful Math Department and a big congrats to all of the students who participated in the algebra and geometry programs. A big shout out goes to our 7th grade Civics teachers who worked diligently to prepare our students for the EOC in Civics. The hard work paid off as IRMS students surpassed District and State scores by over 13 percentage points. Way to go Civics Department!!! We couldn’t be prouder!

Last but not least, and not to be outdone, our 8th Grade Science students shattered the District and State averages by over 10-percentage points. A great job by our Science Department and a wonderful job done by our students!

Focusing on the year ahead, we have some great Enrichment programs for our students. Our Enrichment classes this year includes: Full year Art and Band as well as Half year PE

visited the Everglades and realized the impact that our actions and decisions have on this ecosystem. Our students decided that educating the citizens of Cooper City about their water usage was a good solution to our problem. They decided to participate in Broward County’s Water Matters Day.

Meanwhile, through the use of an educational blog and Skype we were able to collaborate with our sister school about our findings and progress. Our first Skype session was memorable! As part of this international collaboration this summer, two Griffin teachers were invited to visit Taiwan as part of the US delegation. During the visit, these teachers shared information with Taiwanese schools about Griffin’s sustainability initiatives, which included: our recycling program, our campus burrowing owls, our energy reduction program, and our water conservation efforts.

For more information and pictures about our international exchange, you can visit our blog at us_taiwanecoschools.blogspot.com. We are very excited to be able to host our Taiwanese colleagues at our school. On October 1st the Taiwanese delegation will be visiting our campus to learn about our school’s sustainability initiatives. This school year, we will continue to participate in this program. Two fifth grade classrooms will be working on the Eco Schools Program Project Based Learning. It is exciting to see our students engage in research looking for environmental friendly solutions to 21st Century challenges.

and Culinary Arts for our incoming 6th graders. Our 7th graders will also have JLDC and STEM along with Peer Counseling. Finally, our 8th grade students will be offered Spanish, Debate and Yearbook to go along with PE, STEM and JLDC. There are many exciting things happening in each of our enrichment classes and we hope the students enjoy the learning and activities that take place daily.

IRMS prides itself on offering a variety of clubs to reach the needs and interests of our student body. We are thrilled that we have returning the mentoring program this year, in association with Big Brothers/Big Sisters! We will also continue hosting the after school Chess and Debate programs and we hope to be adding an African American Studies program along with a Creative Writing group. It is our goal to give students an opportunity to participate in activities that interest and excite them! If you have a great idea for a club here at IRMS, please feel free to share.

Looking ahead, we have some important events happening this fall! The Jaguar Jog Pep Rally and the Jaguar Jog will take place in early November. Also, Grandparent’s Day November 24th. We hope to see you there! We look forward to continuing our commitment to develop strong minds and bodies and making our students well-rounded citizens. Have a wonderful school year, and remember to “Stride With Jaguar Pride!”
