On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta torepresent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavilyfavored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20pounds less.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black”240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offen-sive attack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterbackHenry Spann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7,with scrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. Theywrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferociousstyle proved overwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the AtlantaJournal remarked of the Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in theseUnited States of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdictover the flock of wild men from North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and“Preachers.”— revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

HEAD COACH PRICEWILDCATS •

DAVIDSON COLLEGE •WILDCATS •DAVIDSON COLLEGE •WILDCATS

Caroline Price enters her 31st season in2012-13 as the head women's tennis coach. She began her exemplary tenure at Davidson

in 1983 and has since guided the Wildcats to one national champi-onship and 22 winning seasons, including seven straight years, before Davidson went 12-12 in 2008-09.

The women's tennis program is one of two female programs atDavidson to make a national tournament appearance, and among active Davidson coaches, Price has one of the highest overall win-ning percentage (.588) of any women's team.

Entering the 2012-2013 women's tennis season, Price has an over-all record of 406-284 and is 111-73 in Southern Conference duals.

Last year, Davidson again continued its youth movement withfive sophomores seeing time in the starting lineup as the Wildcatswent 5-19 overall and 2-8 in the SoCon. Of the five wins, four ofthem came at the friendly confines of Covington Tennis Courts.Sophomore Brites Moniz-Soares took a big step in her sophomorecampaign, going a team-best 15-6 in singles action. She was honoredwith a spot on the All-SoCon Second Team at the No. 2 singles posi-tion, making her the 12th Wildcat under Price to get first or secondteam honors.

The 2011 season saw Price break in five freshmen as Davidsonwent just 5-20 overall and 1-9 in league play. It was the first time theWildcats finished under .500 since the 2001 team went 8-13. The 2011season was still a milestone year as the veteran coach reached the400-win plateau for her career, getting it on Feb. 18 in a 7-0 win athome vs. USC-Upstate.

The 2010 campaign saw Davidson finish in the top-four of theSoCon standings with a 7-3 mark, while Price guided the 'Cats to a15-8 overall record. The 'Cats advanced to the SoCon Tournament, asonly the top-four teams made it, before seeing their season come toan end with a defeat to eventual champion College of Charleston. The 15 wins made it the sixth time in the last seven years theWildcats have tallied at least that many wins in a year and markedthe ninth straight season they have had a winning record in leaguematches.

After opening the season 4-7, Price guided the Wildcats to an 8-5mark down the stretch, including a 4-1 win in the 'Cats SoConTournament opener against Georgia Southern, to finish the 2009campaign at 12-12 and 6-4 in league play. The winning mark inSoCon matches was the eighth straight season the Wildcats havesported a winning record against their SoCon-foes. Davidson alsoagain had a winning record at home, sporting an 8-4 mark.

For the third time in the past four years, Price led the Wildcats tothe finals of the SoCon Tennis Championships as Davidson conclud-ed with a 19-6 overall mark (7-2 in SoCon) in 2008. The 19 winsmarked the fifth straight season the Wildcats had taken home atleast 15 wins or more in a single season. Of the 19 wins, 10 of themcame on the Wildcats' home court as they won their first 10 straighthome matches, before falling to close out the regular season.

The 2007 campaign saw Price guide the Wildcats to an 18-7 over-all mark and appearance in the 2007 SoCon Women’s TennisChampionship Semifinals before falling to College of Charleston.

Price garnered her third and most recent SoCon Coach of theYear honors during 2001-02 season when her team posted 18 victo-ries. The 2002-03 team followed with a 13-6 season and an appear-ance in the Southern Conference championship match for the firsttime since the format of the tournament changed in 1998. And last

year, although their hopes for a championship were dashed byCollege of Charleston in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament, the Wildcats posted eight regular-season conference wins, the mostever in school history.

In Price's second year at Davidson, she led the team to the 1984NCAA Division III National Championship, the only national cham-pionship ever earned by a Davidson athletic team. In 1985, theWildcats returned to the NCAA Tournament but lost in the finals tothe University of San Diego. That year, the 'Cats set a new schoolrecord for wins in a season with 21.

Coach Price was faced with a new challenge in 1987 as Davidsonbegan competing at the Division I level without the advantage ofscholarships. Despite the lack of funds and the marked increase incompetition, Price's teams still managed to garner more wins thanlosses. It was not until the 1990-91 season, the first time DavidsonCollege offered scholarships to women, that Price was able to offerscholarships to her players.

In 1993, Davidson started competing as a member of the SoConafter a successful two-year stint (including one league champi-onship) as a member of the Big South Conference. Moving up yetanother level in competition, the Wildcats responded to the newestchallenge by finishing the season 12-5 for a second-place finish inthe league.

Since their introduction to the SoCon more than a decade ago,Price's teams have found great success. Thanks to the 'Cats' impres-sive 6-1 record in conference play in 1994, Price earned SouthernConference Coach-of-the-Year honors. She was recognized again in1996 after leading the Wildcat squad to a 5-2 league record.

A 1972 graduate of Furman, Price earned a bachelor of artsdegree in physical education. Before her arrival at Davidson, sheserved as East Carolina's Director of Men's and Women's Tennis.
