David s Word Temple Beth David | July/August Volume 21, Issue 4 I am immensely grateful for Cantor Richard Schwartz’s nine years of dedication he has bestowed upon Temple Beth David. His love, affec- tion and musical stewardship at Temple Beth David has de- lighted and made a signifi- cant spiritual impact on so many. I am especially fortunate for our partnership and his pulpit presence with me. Cantor Schwartz will definitely be missed. Hazahk, hazahk V’nitz- hazek! As part of any 70+ year old congregation, there are chapters that have closed and new ones to be written. Last year we were ex- tremely fortunate to have Gal Kessler Rohs, our Education Director, lead, engage, shape, inspire and revitalize our school. Gal is an overwhelmingly positive force in multiple as- pects of TBD. Her three children have been a pleasure to watch share in her Judaic enthusi- asm, while her husband Remo, is an accom- plished scientist at USC. Gal’s tireless energy, devotion, organization and communication skills have combined to be one of the brightest lights of the past year and to insure our contin- ued vitality for years to come. Cantor Lilah Sugarman enthusiastically joins our team at Temple Beth David. She brings with her a wonderful array of talents as a formally ordained Cantor from our Reform Movement’s Hebrew Union College. Cantor Sugarman has been with Temple Isaiah in West Los Angeles and comes with an abun- dance of warmth and excitement. I am certain you will enjoy listening to her on the pulpit and will love meeting her in person. There are few Cantors who come with her port- folio of skills and Jewish knowledge. She will be a blessing to our leadership and entire con- gregational. Please introduce yourselves to her, you too will certainly find her extraordinary. I also welcome the new members of our board and their fresh visions which will compliment the experiences and knowledge of our continu- ing board members. The foundations for the coming years will be strengthened by their joint engagement, dedication and love of our Jewish community. UPDATES FROM OUR RELIGIOUS SCHOOLGal Kessler Rohs

Reflections of changes in ourpast year, excitement for thepresent, hopes for the future

Recently, I spoke with one ofour longest active and respectedTBD members, Mr. IrwinFrazin. Mr. Frazin hasvolunteered at almost every

position at our temple, including two presidencychairs, vice president, rebuilding committee chair, board member, treasurer, and teacher. All this andmore of his exemplary contributions have spun fora short duration of more than 65 years. Given Mr.Frazin’s young at heart age and thoroughknowledge of TBD, I hunger for his words andtake his guidance as a tool for leadership.

In our conversation, Mr. Frazin positivelyassured me that TBD is heading in the rightdirection, thanks to the changes now underway. Iopenly thank Mr. Frazin for his words ofencouragement, which bring me fulfillment. Thisis our temple, our home, our children, and ourcommunity that we are catering for, and so Iwould like to share some of the year’s highlightedinnovations. I hope you too will see a positivelight, and be encouraged to join me in fulfillmentthrough these changes:

We, as a school, now have a sharper and uniqueidentity, encompassed in our recent promotionalpostcard. TBD Religious School, as is TBD,carries the flag of excellence in six recurring andunique themes: Social action, inter-generationalexperiences, parental involvement, engagedfaculty, buddy system, and hands-on learning.

With the leadership of Feo Shutman andJason Young, we proudly extend our open heartto the homeless community through volunteerwork at Union Station, and food and toiletrydonations to Foothill Unity. I now am proud toprovide a platform of outreached hands also to

senior citizens, and the caring for animals. Thesetwo (and more) charitable fields are what I yearnTBD to cater for, and what I seek for you to joinme, if you will. Atticus Blatt culminated herreligious school teaching year with engaging thecommunity, also outside of our school, in servingther sheltered animals at the San Gabriel HumaneSociety. She will be our point person, or liason, for all animal care.

Other changes we have seen are throughtechnology. We had a Passover Seder whereRabbi Lachtman walked us through websites onyour tablets and phones to reach out to peoplewho need us. We had, in almost every gathering, slide show presentations with music and emotions. Our social media pages and group, moreover, aregrowing and connecting us. We are eagerlypursuing the younger generation’s love of tabletsand phones in TBD’s classrooms. Namely, JasonMoss’ students mapped out Israel for us usingGoogle Maps, Sarah Evans’ students calculatedHebrew dates using JI Interactive Calendar, MissDoris Robin (she herself!) communicated viaemails and texts (wow!), Atticus Blatt’s studentscreated Google Slide flyers, and our little darlingsin Susan Grodsky’s class traced the Alef Bet withtheir tender little fingers on iPad screens.

I am sure you too, throughout this year, havelooked around as you opened a TBD door tonotice but a few changes. Next time you come toTemple, be sure to take yet another look, becausethe biggest change you’ll notice, is the growth ofchildren. Children do not slow down, and nor doestheir growth at TBD. That to me, is this year’soptimistic change that our friend, Mr. Frazinreassured me of. As you think about our future, Ihope this will be your reassurance too.

Happy Summer!- Gal

6 | Sisterhood

June is the last sisterhood meeting of the year. InJuly a couple of us will attend “All Sisterhood Day,”at Temple Beth Hillel in Valley Village. The event isorganized by the WRJ (Women of Reform Judaism).Part of our Sisterhood dues goes to the WRJ whichuses it for projects including scholarships for futurecantors and rabbis. (I really like that!)

Robin Evans (our past Sisterhood President) and Ihave made wonderful connections at these meetingsand we look forward to seeing our friends, old andnew. We always come back reenergized and eager toshare what we experienced in the workshops.

Here is a list of a few things that Sisterhood hasaccomplished for 2017-2018:

-Donated over $3000 to the Temple.-Rabbi Lachtman received $500 for camp scholarships.-A new vacuum and a mini fridge for the office. -Paid for the estimate of getting the water heater repaired.-Polished the torah silver rimonim and breastplate.-Paid for plush stuffed torahs that were given to

new Religious School students attending the consecration ceremony.

-Baking hamantaschen for Purim. Fundraised and also supplied for the Purim oneg.

-Shopped and donated the dinner for Family Fun Night.-Supplied new groggers for Purim. -Shopped and prepared the “Break the Fast”

at the end of Yom Kippur.-Organized our world famous Latka mix fundraiser!

We also donated a very generous amount of Latka mix for temple Hanukkah dinner.

-Arranged to have the kitchen oven and hood commercially cleaned.

-Supplied gelt and dreidels for Hanukkah. -Organized and ran the Hanukkah boutique.-Supplied Bar/Bat mitzvah gifts.-Contributed to the Rosh Hashana oneg.-Held our “Paid up sisterhood brunch” in January and

our end of year Sisterhood Sping Benefit event.-Started raising funds with the goal of replacing

the kitchen ovens.

Here’s a little about me and most of my 20 templeyears...

I help out in the temple as office support, includingworking with Temple tenants and congregants to havea smoother transition of timing and space for neces-sary temple usage.

Shop weekly for the oneg and arrange servers as needed.Purchase merchandise for the sisterhood gift shopHold special gift shop sales throughout the yearArrange onegs with congregants for special occasion. Run the annual Temple Hanukkah BoutiqueWork with custodial staff so that tables and chairs

are set up correctly(I have also been known to wash and clean out the oneg refrigerator when messy)

In the end it’s all about supporting the temple. Wehave a great support system. But by joining your Tem-ple Sisterhood we can continue to complete our proj-ects. You will see, we are as powerful as theMacabbees!

Just a reminder: Rosh Hashana is September 9thHanukkah starts December 2!Have a lovely summer and a Sweet New Year!

GREETINGS FROM SISTERHOODCarol Ozer

She was married to CharlesSearls and they worked diligently together to aid the hungry and homeless for decades long food driveswithin the religious communities of the San Gabriel Valley. She inspired dozens of followers to carryon with this mitzvah of feeding the homeless.Lorraine will be missed but her inspirational acts will endure through those who have been inspired toemulate her food drives.
