THERE is plenty of cheeky banter at DavidSpokes Mechanical Repairs, North Haven.Apprentices go with the territory in the autotrade, and the young ones like to keep theatmosphere light.

The laughs and camaraderie take DavidSpokes back to the days when he wasstarting his career in the very same garageon Ocean Drive North Haven.

“I started here as a first year apprenticeback in 1975, with the Porter family, who builtthe place,” David explained.

It seems everybody in the area knew thePorters. Bruce Porter built the business fromscratch and ran it successfully for some 20years.

“Yes, the Porters were very well respectedand well-liked,” David said, adding that thebusiness still benefits from its rock solidroots.

“Some folk still remember the Porters and Ihave always tried hard to look aftercustomers the way they used to,” he said.

David took over the running of thebusiness in 1994 and is celebrating 20 yearsof business success this year. He knew itmade sense to also buy the premises andeventually, he and Terry Doyle from CamdenHaven Auto Body Repairs next door, took upthe opportunity to purchase the property twoyears ago.

According to Terry Doyle, he and Davidhave a similar approach to doing business.

“It works well having complementary autotrade businesses located in the samecomplex,” Terry said.

“Having quality businesses working side by

side provides benefits for our customers andmeans we often refer business to each other,”he added.

Apart from their own businesses, NorthHaven Service Centre is also home to NorthHaven Glass & Screens and the Matildaservice station.

Gail and Alan Tweddle from CamdenHaven Glass & Screens have been part ofthe local community for many years and haveoperated their business from the NorthHaven Service Centre for ten years in total.

Gail Tweddle has known David Spokessince the day he started his apprenticeship in1975.

“He hasn’t changed a bit,” Gail said, with asmile.

She describes him as a quiet achiever,someone who is generous with his time andquick to offer assistance.

“Nothing is ever a problem for him and heis always helping other people out,” Gail said.

Perhaps it is the emphasis on customerservice and going the extra mile that makeshis business a success.

“We do try hard to look after customers,”David said, adding that people tend toremember good service.

“Honesty and trust are important too,particularly when it comes to buildingreputation,” he added.

Today David Spokes Mechanical Repairsoffers a full range of motor vehicle repairs,servicing and registration inspections, as wellas tyre and battery sales. The team arehappy to work on older style vehicles, as wellas the latest models.

David’s enthusiasm for vintage cars and

trucks is well known in the area and is one ofhis enduring passions. David’s first historiccar, a 1948 Pontiac, was bought in the 1970swhen he was still an apprentice.

A foundation member of the Hastings AutoRestorers Society, David is also involved withthe Timbertown Steam and Oil Club.

In 2014 it is hard to imagine the NorthHaven Service Centre being anything otherthan what it is and has always been. The fourbusinesses are each successful in their ownright and work hard to serve the tight-knitcommunity to the best of their ability.

There is a positive atmosphere at 531Ocean Drive North Haven and with peoplelike David Spokes, Terry Doyle, Gail and AlanTweddle, Mukesh Kumar and those cheekyyoung apprentices, the good times and goodservice are likely to continue.
