frequently asked questions...How long have you been playing the piano?I started taking piano lessons when I was 12. In three years of lessons, however, I went through three different piano teachers. By the time Iwas 15, I lost interest. The problem, from the very beginning, was thatI didn’t have any desire to play classical music. I wanted to write andplay my own music. I just had idea how to do that. That all changedwhen I spent a semester studying music theory during my freshmanyear of college. That opened my eyes to the patterns in the keyboard, and once I could see and understand those patterns, I was able toteach myself to play the music I had been hearing in my head all along.I completed my first album of original songs when I was 25 years old.

How do you go about writing your songs? Most of my songs come to me through improvisation - just playingaround on the keyboard until an interesting chord progression strikesme. I then develop it, pounding out a melody until a song arrangmentbegins to take shape. Once I see where the piece is going, I embellishit, smooth it out, and before long it has form, substance, a beginning and an end.

How long does it take you to compose a song?Anywhere from two hours to two or three years. Most songs take me six to nine months to arrange before I amsatisfied with them.

Do you write down any of your compositions? No, I play all my songs from memory. I haven't the patience to actually write them down. I have had otherstranscribe my most popular songs to sheet music, however. Those sheet music selections are available forpurchase from my web site, davidnevue.com

Can you read sheet music? To a limited degree. If I put the effort into it, I can usually work out an intermediate-level song from sheet music. Buthonestly, I've always been more interested in writing and playing my own creations. What I enjoy about the pianomore than anything else is the process of creation, making something new out of nothing. If I need to learn apopular song for some reason, such as for a wedding, I’ll learn it by ear from a recording, if at all possible.

Who are your biggest musical influences? Most of my musical influences come from my younger years. I was BIG into progressive rock music in college, and my love for changes in time and tempo are directly influenced by bands like Rush, Pink Floyd, Kansas, andRenaissance. As far as the piano goes, were it not for my being introduced to the music of pianist GeorgeWinston, I don't think I would have ever even considered writing for solo piano. His music made a big impact onme early on. As for classical influences, they include the piano works of Chopin, and to a lesser degree,Rachmaninoff.
