2 nd June 2016 Dear families, We brought Catholic Education Week to a close with a joyful celebration of Love and Mercy during Mass on Saturday night. It was appropriate that representations from St Francis Xavier, Emmaus, St Alipius Kinder and Damascus College joined us for this special liturgy. The music was a highlight and so many parishioners stopped to let me know how much they enjoyed the celebration. I thank Adam Cameron for the energy, commitment and generosity he brings to supporting our students. Rachel’s Allan’s leadership was significant in planning and preparing for the Mass. We are blessed to have her deep faith commitment and parish connections as she leads this vital area of school life. Reflection: Last week our Diocese celebrated Catholic Education Week. We are particularly luckily to have opportunities to celebrate in an incredibly unique combined mass alongside Damascus College, Saint Francis Xavier Primary School, Emmaus Primary School and Saint Alipius Kindergarten. As separate schools we were privileged to share the weekly parish mass together. As we stood together as one faith community on Saturday night I was moved by the solidarity evoked and present in our Parish church. Solidarity: seeing others not as rivals or statistics, but brothers and sisters. Solidarity is one of the key principles identified by Pope Francis as bringing about the common good. A Church of Mercy promotes, makes present and advocates for the common good in the world. As a consequence, building a community of mercy must start here.

CELEBRATING OUR ELEVATED STATUS Finally, after months of waiting, we are able to announce that we had the official hand-over of our lift at 2pm today. Our children, our staff and our families have been so very patient watching and waiting for something to happen. Today there were big smiles and a multitude of questions as the doors opened on our first floor and our architect, builder and I stepped out. Our lift will be used exclusively for transporting people who are unable to climb stairs and for moving heavy objects between floors. Over the next few weeks, however, we will try and give every child the experience of a ‘ride in the lift. It would be very disappointing to never have that chance.

MATILDAS AT ST ALIPIUS Tomorrow morning we have the pleasure of hosting a visit from 2 members of the Australian Women’s Football Team the Matildas. Our Year 5/6 students will meet the players, have an opportunity to see the Matilda’s skills and have time for a Q&A session.

MERCY CORNER

The word solidarity is a little worn and at times poorly understood, but it refers to something more than a few sporadic acts of generosity. It presumes the creation of a new mindset which thinks in terms of community and the priority of the life of all over the appropriation of goods by a few … (Pope Francis) How do I understand solidarity? In what ways do I actively seek and live out this new mindset? Do I recognise the times that I fail to live in solidarity? This week make a commitment to improving the life of the community by making a small sacrifice.

Working Bee When: Saturday June 4th, 10:00am - 12:00noon Wanted: A little muscle to help the Enviro Club to tidy up the back yard of the school house. Our aim is to have it ready so that children can be part of developing a more productive and sustainable backyard garden. For more information or if you have any ideas please see Dan. Hope to see you there even for an hour.

Hot Lunches – Thursday’s Students will need to place their order into the class message bag by each Thursday morning. On a brown paper bag please write: Your child’s name Class Order, clearly stating if large or party size and if money in another child’s bag, who and which class CORRECT MONEY is also required. No staples, glue and or sticky tape is needed on the bag. This makes the job a lot easier for the couple of parents who volunteer their time to make hot lunches available each week.

St Alipius Parish School Meal Care Program

Dear Volunteers,

Thank you so much for putting your name forward to contribute to our Meal Care Program. It

is so appreciated!

So far we have been able to fill the roster for the remainder of Term 2 and Term 3, which is

fantastic. The roster is attached below and I have also included the list of volunteers who

have said they are able to cook a meal at short notice or purchase a meal.

Here is the process for our Meal Care Program:

Roster Volunteers:

- When it is your week, please cook a meal to feed a family (4-6 people).

- Place your meal into a container suitable for the freezer. The best containers are the ones with

the disposable silver tray with the cardboard lid (I will purchase some and leave them in the

office if you would like to come in and get one for your week).

- Please make sure you have written the date on the cardboard lid or a label so we can give

meals out according to date cooked.

- Bring it into the office anytime during that week and we will place it in the freezer.

Short Notice: - At times we may need a meal at short notice. I will notify volunteers the day before if this is

required.

Purchased Meal: - Occasionally families who have been given quite a few of our frozen meals may like something

fresh for a change so we may ask for a purchased meal. This could be a BBQ chicken and

coleslaw, or a plate of sushi or some fresh salads or whatever else you can think of!

If you hear of anyone whom you feel may benefit from a meal going home, please email me

([email protected]) so we can support as many people as we can in our

community.

Kind Regards,

Emily Clarke
