Dear Parents and Friends of Melrose Primary What an actioned packed time we had last week. Our whole school camp to Adelaide was fun with great time had by all. Sports Day last Friday was also a success. Sports Day Congratulations to all competitors and spectators who were present on sports day. The weather was just right for a great day of competition. What a close competition! At the end of the day the scores were close but Dunstan edged out Rogers. The shield was accepted by the Dunstan captions – Hudson being the Melrose captain. There were many achievements in the Primary (R-5) competition with lots of ribbons won by our Melrose students. Thank you to Mr Peter Blackburn, Ms Jane Crawford, Ms Jenny Caldwell and Mr Alby Nicholls and staff at Booleroo Centre District School for organising a great sports day. In the Senior School competition, we especially congratulate Oliver - U/13 Boys Runner-up. The following students were also selected in Booleroo Centre’s MNSEC Team: Che, Lucas and Oliver. Harmony Day A reminder that we will be celebrating Harmony Day next Friday 20 th March. Students will be participating in classroom activities on the day. Students are encouraged to wear orange on this day to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Best wishes We wish Elin (and Stephen) much happiness for their wedding and married life to follow. Elin our Play Centre Leader has taken some well-deserved long service leave for the remainder of this term. Her replacement is Ms Roweena Menz. We welcome back Roweena as she was a MPS Play Centre Leader a number of years ago. Leaders Day and Literacy Summit In the last newsletter I mentioned attending the annual Leaders and Literacy Summit for DfE schools. I came away with a number of ideas to further shape our curriculum offerings at MPS. Some of my take-always from the two days included the importance of using data to direct learning programs for students. We have data by using NAPLAN test results, PAT tests and a number of other tests that we as a school administer and use. I also went to a really informative workshop on spelling. It covered the challenges of learning and teaching spelling in the primary years. Evidence indicates that spelling, grammar and punctuation jointly predict written composition achievement but spelling is the main predictor. Also when a teacher models the process of spelling as a word-formation problem solving task it can empower students to develop a higher ability in spelling.

Thank you A very special thank you to Amanda for coming on camp with us at such short notice. I’m sure Amanda had a great time especially at Bounce!!!

Staff also thank parents who regularly do jobs which includes bringing in the wheelie bins, re-shelving library books, taking newsletters to Rural Care and taking lunch orders to Store 54 to name a few. This helps make our school a great place to be, and is truly appreciated. Regards, Murray Whole School Camp – Upper Primary Summary Camp was great success with all students representing Melrose Primary School well with excellent behaviour and enjoying themselves. Saint Kilda playground was lots of fun, upon pulling up to the huge playground someone accounted from the back of the bus "this is the best camp ever", it looked like camp was off to a great start. The year 5,6,7 enjoyed sleeping in tents on the roof of the zoo, despite the early morning start with students either being woken by the first 6am flight out of Adelaide or the monkeys in the zoo shortly after that. Tuesday saw the Upper Primary do a LOT of walking. From the zoo to the rainforest experience at the Botanic Gardens, then we walked up to the museum and spent almost 2 hours looking at the displays. The students did very well to still have energy for Bounce after all that walking. Wednesday morning, we all did some planet and star gazing at the Planetarium before the long trip home. Below are some of the student’s comments about what they thought about camp or what they learnt while on camp. I thoroughly enjoyed camp with all the students.

Kate Taylor

Sonny - The best things at the zoo were the otters, I picked the otters because otters are my favourite animal they are cute, friendly, enjoyable to watch and the best. I also liked the Zoo Snooze because we year 5’s went on the roof and had ice-cream. The most interesting thing I learned at the museum was that there was a wombat megafauna the size of a hippopotamus.

Eva - At bounce I enjoyed jumping on all of the trampolines. The funniest thing was seeing the monkeys at the zoo. I thought camp was going to be boring but it was fun.

Che - The most interesting fact that I heard at the Botanic Gardens was that in the Amazon rainforest. It takes a single rain drop 10 minutes to reach the ground. At Bounce I enjoyed the X Park because there was a warp wall, swinging rings and the spider wall. At the Planetarium I learned that the closest black hole to Earth is called V616 Monocerotis and it is 3000 light years away. A light year is how far light travels in a year which is 9 trillion kilometres. I thought camp was one of the best camps I’ve been on.

Bryce - The best thing at the zoo was holding the sword fishes tusk The most interesting was looking at the King Palm leaf. At bounce I enjoyed playing dodgeball. At the Planetarium I found out that every 20 years Jupiter and Saturn line up. I liked the meerkats hiding in a fake rock. I thought camp was amazing and fun.

Hudson - The best thing at the zoo was the night walk because the nocturnal animals were very active. It was very funny when the monkeys were running in tubes in the zoo on trees. The most interesting thing about the Botanic Garden was the rain forest in the big green house, it looked great. At the museum the most fascinating thing was the animal sculptures, my favourite was the stuffed sloth. At Bounce I loved the X Park because I love parkour. The Planetarium was beautiful because of all the stars and planets. Camp was fun because we went everywhere. Thanks teachers.

Kaleb - The best thing at the zoo was the hyena noise. At the Botanic Garden I liked that the forest was really thick. I really liked the crystals at the museum. At Bounce I enjoyed the ninja warrior challenge. At the Planetarium I learned where Orion the hunter and Orion's belt are in the sky. The things I liked best at camp were Bounce and Subway. I thought camp was fun but not when we had to go back to Melrose.

Lara - The best thing about camp was when we went on the night walk. It was really fun because we saw animals that we didn’t get to see in the day. We also went to the Saint Kilda playground it was most likely the best playground I have ever been to. Anyway, we also went to Bounce. The thing I liked the best was the X-Park and really liked the flying fox in the X Park. Also I loved the Botanic Gardens because it was so beautiful and cool. I also liked the planetarium was super cool and wired. So all and all I loved the camp it was probably my favourite camp ever.

Lucas - The best thing at the zoo was watching the lions up close on the night walk and being the only people at the zoo at night. The most interesting thing at the Adelaide Botanic Garden was looking at how tall the fig was that was strangling the tree. The most interesting thing at the museum was looking at all the stuffed animals on display in their habitats. Also, being able to look at all the shields the Aboriginals used. At Bounce I enjoyed going through the X-park and doing the dodge ball and throwing lots of balls at Hudson. At the Planetarium I learned that there is no weather on the moon no wind, rain and light. Also being able to see the night sky go darker and looking at the stars.

Lily O - I really enjoyed camp and liked so many things about it. Here are some things that I really enjoyed. When we went to St Kilda playground we could go on whatever we liked and all the slides were scary but so fun. At the museum my favourite thing was looking at all the stuffed animals. They had so many stuffed animals on display. There was also a giant squid that started at the top and went nearly down to the bottom floor and you could look at it on every level it was on. I loved Bounce. Firstly, we went to these trampolines that went up on leans that you could run up. Then we went to these really bouncy trampolines that I could do flips on. We also went to this ninja park thing that was so hard that I had to skip some of it. When we went to the Planetarium we got to sit in the red chairs in a round room looking at the stars! We learned about different planets you could see from earth and how things in space orbit around other things. Camp was so good and I enjoyed it so much and think that we should do it again.
